June 2013 Dear Friends,

The story goes that someone arrived at heaven and was met by an

angel who asked to see his wounds. “Wounds? I haven’t got any.”

“Wasn’t anything worth struggling for?” the angel replied.

Whilst we have been in these glorious parts, I don’t think I have met

a single person who hasn’t been bruised in some way or other

during their life. Losing a job, a partner, being wrongfully accused,

doubting ourselves. It seems that most of us carry wounds, disguised

or not.

A 16th-century Spanish saint, often called St John of the Cross, said

“we have to pass through midnight before it turns towards dawn.”

What can we do when we face these struggles? My own

experience is that, alongside sharing the bruise with someone safe,

we can pray.

We open our hands, vulnerably, fearfully, putting out our hands ‘into

a darkness that is God’s welcoming touch’, as Rowan Williams puts

it. We may only manage the words ‘Our Father….’ But in uttering

those, we are putting ourselves alongside the One who will never let

us go. The One who made us, knows us outside and in, and still loves

us, bruises and all.

Church is a place where we bruised can gather, we can offer and

receive compassion. We can break bread together, as we

remember that extraordinary breaking of a life before the

ascended glory of Jesus with God. George Herbert put it like this:

You must sit down, says Love, and taste my meat:

So I did sit down and eat.

With love,With love,With love,With love,

FionaFionaFionaFiona

Planning Applications Council considered two planning applications. A proposal to erect two detached houses as opposed to two semi-detached dwellings at Church Cottages was not supported on the grounds that the design did not maintain or enhance the character and appearance of its surroundings, did not relate well to the existing cottages nor was it sympathetic to the setting of the adjacent Grade I listed Church. Council did not comment on an application to render an extension to 1 Church Cottages. Accounts The accounts for 2012/13 were approved for submission to the auditors and will be published at the conclusion of the audit. The next meeting of the Parish Council will be in the Village Hall at 7.30pm on 3rd July 2013.

Family Quiz Night This will be held on Friday 14th June at 7pm at Wilby Cof E School Hall. It is in aid of Zambia Kids Mission, and entry of £5 per person includes a light supper. Adults and Kids Draw. Bring your own drink. For more information telephone Emma Marsh during school hours on 01379 384708.

A Very Munchy Lunch The May lunch was served to 30 hungry, happy people in Wilby village hall, who laughed and chatted as we met up with old friends, three from as far as Yorkshire. Some of us had not met since the last lunch. Our teeth sank into the most delicious gammon followed by the promised creamy rice pudding prepared by the LADYBIRDS who never fail to please us. They are ever ready (like the batteries!) to considered dietary issues. If you have missed these lunches, the next one is on 25th June. Anyone with an interest in Wilby is wel-come. Wilby WI The April meeting was well attended for the talk by Mrs Dearlove entitled ‘Ocean Children’. Mrs Dearlove with her husband and two children under the age of ten sailed from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic and home again. It took a year, with lots of island hopping. We were shown wonder-ful slides of beautiful scenery, and what life was like on board including during some very rough seas. What great memories for them all. At a group meeting on 24th April at Fressingfield the speaker was Charlie Haylock who specialises in the Suffolk language and humour. He has also written several books on the subject. A very amusing evening! The May meeting was a cookery demonstration on how to make Jane Cooksley’s vegetable cakes. We tested four different delicious cakes, but nobody identified the hidden vegetables. The June meeting on 24th will be a trip to Chocolaterie, the shop in Eye to see how they make their wonderful hand-made chocolates. Nancy

Brundish Parish Council Brundish Parish Council held its Annual Parish Meeting on Thursday 9th May, where reports on various local bodies were heard and the annual summary of the Parish Council accounts were presented. It was followed by the Parish Council AGM, at which Anthony Bryant was elected as Chairman for the coming year. The Council thanked Tony St. Quinton for his long service as Chairman, a post he has held since 2004. Councillor vacancy Following the resignation of Arnold Crudgington, there is a vacancy for a Parish Councillor. After following the correct procedures, the Council now need to co-opt a new member, and invite any interested person to contact the Clerk in the first instance. In order to qualify to become a Parish Councillor, candidates should be over 18, a British or Common-wealth citizen, and be resident or have a business interest in the parish. There are also certain disqualifications involving bankruptcy and criminal convictions, and Councillors cannot also be paid employees of the Council. The Council meet bi-monthly, with an occasional extra meeting if required. To find out more, please contact Sandra Apps, Clerk, at [email protected] or on 01728 628607 (evenings). Vacancy for Parish Clerk As I am now working full time as a teacher, I am finding it increasingly difficult to fulfil my Parish Clerk duties, so will be leaving the post in September. The Council therefore need to find a new Clerk. The position carries a very small salary (taxable – the Council must register all employ-ees for PAYE even if they have no other earnings) and an allowance for office expenses, as the Clerk will be expected to work from home. Duties include preparing agenda and other paperwork for meetings; taking minutes; dealing with email and correspondence; preparing and monitor-ing accounts; maintaining the website (easier than you think!) and dealing with queries from the public, amongst other things. You should be computer literate, have some accounting experience, be very patient, and have a little spare space in which to keep day-to-day files etc. Full details can be obtained by contacting me as above.
