January 2016

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year!

Have you ever considered how many rites of passage you undergo throughout your

life? No doubt in 2016 some of us may experience some. A recent list of ‘rites of

passage’ I saw included the first time you ride a bicycle without the stabilisers,

passing a driving test, leaving school, getting married, first child and so on. A rite

of passage is a moment in our life when we make a transition.

One rite of passage that the Church offers is baptism. Baptism is our response to

God’s call to us to follow Christ, and is often known as Christening; it is carried

out by a priest, mainly at the font and involves the symbolism of water and light.

Most of us are Christened as children with the support of Godparents and our

parents, though more and more are being Christened as adults. This rite of passage

marks our transition from darkness into the light of Christ.

Being Christened however, is not the end, it is generally expected that this would

be followed by what is known as Confirmation. Confirmation is an affirmation of

the vows and undertakings that were made during Christening, when our parents

and Godparents speak for us, but in Confirmation we confirm these vows and

undertakings ourselves in front of the bishop, who then confirms us by laying his

hands on our head.

We have a large number of children (and adults) who have been Christened but not

Confirmed, so we are arranging for Bishop Martin to visit soon to carry out this rite

of passage, so if you or someone you know qualify for Confirmation (you must be

over 11 years of age), then please do contact David or myself. My telephone

number is 01986 798901, David’s is at the top of this letter.

With my prayers and best wishes,

Ron

WILBY AUTUMN SUPPER

There was a good gathering at Wilby Coronation Hall on 21st November for the

Autumn Supper. The evening began with a short presentation on using a defibril-

lator in the event of someone suffering a heart attack, and was very well received.

A splendid supper was then served with a hot main course, followed by a won-

derful selection of desserts, coffee and mints. Judging by the lively chatter, the

evening was enjoyed by all who came and resulted in the magnificent sum of

£632.10 being raised for Wilby Church funds. A big thankyou to everyone who

helped to prepare for the event, and to all who supported it on the night.

NEWS FROM WILBY SCHOOL

Christmas is fast approaching and as you can imagine the excitement levels are rising

daily in school! Father Christmas found time to drop into the Christmas Fayre and had the

chance to give early Christmas presents to many of the children there.

A huge vote of thanks from the School to all the members of the Friends of Wilby School

Association (FoWSA) and helpers, for all their efforts for the fayre which was a huge

success. FoWSA works hard throughout the year raising additional funds for the school to

help buy the “extra” items which support the children’s learning that the County Council

budget doesn’t stretch to.

Aside from all the Christmas activities, which have included singing and playing brass

instruments at the Framlingham Co-op store and Foxearth Nursing home, carol concerts

and the School’s Christmas service in the Church, the children have also been very busy

with the important business of learning. Sharing assemblies during the term have allowed

the children to showcase their work to parents and Beech Class have also performed the

play “Shakespeare Rocks” as part of their study of the works of William Shakespeare.

The play was a huge success and enjoyed by all – the children looked magnificent in their

costumes which reflected the dress of the time.

Chestnut Class, children aged 5 – 7 years, visited Colchester Castle as part of their study

of castles and what life would have been like living in one. They all had a lovely day

investigating a real castle, although they also had plenty of ideas about what should be in a

castle to make it really comfortable!

There will be a short break over Christmas of the Thursday morning “Tea and Toys”

group for children between 0-5 years old, due to the holidays.

This group will start again on Thursday 7th January 2016.

No need to book, just turn up –the team would love to see you. Please remember the group

now starts at the slightly later time of 9.30am and runs to 11.00am.

The School is closed from Friday 18th December until Monday 4th January 2016, with the

first day for pupils to return into school being Tuesday 5th January 2016.

Wilby School would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christ-

mas and a happy and healthy new year. Every good wish for 2016.

If you have any queries regarding the School please contact the Headteacher,

Mrs Coleman, on 01379 384708 for more information.

NEWS FROM WILBY PARISH COUNCIL

Planning – Anaerobic Digester

The Parish Council held an extra meeting on 24 November 2015 to consider a planning

application submitted to Suffolk County Council related to an anaerobic digestion plant,

associated infrastructure and the use of existing agricultural lagoons at Barley Brigg Farm,

Laxfield Road, Stradbroke. The Parish Council, having been briefed by a Planning

Consultant acting on behalf of the applicant, noted that the application was seeking to

regularise the situation whereby the operation of the plant was not in compliance with the

planning consent granted by Mid Suffolk District Council in 2012. For example the plant

was treating agricultural waste from a number of sources, including the sugar factory in

Bury St Edmunds, rather than solely the adjacent pig farm as allowed for in the original

planning consent. After due consideration the Parish Council resolved to recommend

refusal of the application on the grounds of: increased and concentrated traffic flow

affecting local roads; a level of noise and smell which had been identified as affecting the

amenity of neighbouring dwellings; and a belief that the size of the operation was

disproportionate to the size and nature of the local community and inconsistent with the

capacity of the local road network. Stradbroke Parish Council has also recommended

refusal of the application, which will now be considered by Suffolk County Council on

24 January 2016.

Village Survey – Public Meeting

A meeting has been arranged with representatives of the Church, School and Village Hall

on 13 January 2016 to discuss the Village Survey and in particular to plan the public

meeting at which the results of the survey will be announced and discussed including

consideration of follow up action by the Parish Council and others concerned. It is intended

to hold this public meeting in February 2016. The time and venue for this meeting will be

publicised through the Parish Newsletter, Parish website, Parish email register and such

other means deemed appropriate.

Defibrillator It is important that as many people as possible in the village know how to operate the

defibrillator to be installed in the telephone box and what to do in an emergency when faced

with someone experiencing a cardiac arrest.

There was a good response at the November Autumn Supper and School Christmas Fayre

to the request for individuals to learn more about how the defibrillator works.

If you have not yet notified your interest please pass your name and contact details to

Kirsten Lane on 01379 388365 or by email to [email protected] so that you can be

included in planned familiarisation training.

As previously advertised in the newsletter, a Community Defibrillator Seminar is to be

held in Brundish Village Hall at 7 for 7.30 pm on Thursday 21 January 2016 which every-

one is welcome to attend.

NEWS FROM WILBY CORONATION HALL Charity Number: 30483959

“Striving for something for everyone”

Another year bites the dust!

And another one gone, and another one gone, another one bites the dust!

Hey ! And what a year it has been. As a committee we have worked really hard over

the last 12 months to offer more varied programme of events, which have included our

new Friday night ‘Pub Night’, a Summer Fete, a quiz night,

a concert and our most recent Race Night.

All the money raised has gone towards sustaining and maintaining the hall.

Many people enjoyed our most recent event a ‘Night at the Races’ and with the

support of local residents and the generous sponsorship of local companies we

managed to raise just over £700. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to

this evening to make it such a success. Along with the events, we have continued to

host many social dances and village lunches. The village hall has also been used for

art workshops, private functions and village related matters.

Externally we have managed to stem a leak in the roof, a crack in the wall and clear

the pond. We hope to enhance the overall outside appearance of the hall and return the

pond area to its former glory. We await the Spring to see how many of our recently

planted daffodil bulbs will survive to see the light of day.

Looking forward to 2016, we intend to host a Spring Fayre in addition to our Summer

Fete this year, so once again we look forward to you assisting us in whatever small

way possible. Anyone interested in helping out either with the maintenance of the hall

or contributing to any of our events would be warmly welcomed.

ST LAWRENCE’S CHURCH, BRUNDISH

Brundish Christmas Fair 2015

Despite a sinking feeling that the attendance for the fair was going to be poor,

due to so many people being unable to make it, we were pleasantly surprised at

how many people that did turn up. It was just like old times at the village hall,

with a wonderful festive atmosphere of our community getting together and

enjoying themselves. The final proceeds amounted to just over £640.

A very welcome boost to the church’s coffers.

We’d like to thank everyone who helped, donated or simply turned up and put

their hands in their pockets in such a generous way.

Contributed by Sandra Apps and David Mulrenan

Brundish Parish Ale

Ideas have been flying around as to how the church could raise money in 2016.

One of the suggestions comes from the distant past of Brundish’s social history.

A Parish Ale was a celebration organized by churchwardens in the 19th century

which included musical events and various competitive activities for villages,

such as tug o’ war, running races with straw bales strapped to one’s back, and lots

of other fun based activities. Beer was brewed for the occasion, often by a

farmhand’s wife and sold to raise money for the church.

The word “ale”, originally a West Saxon term, signified the festal event, and

presumably later became to mean the actual beverage. Research has unearthed

that Brundish, at one time, had three ales per year, at Whitsun (Pentecost),

Lammas/Harvest, and at Christmas.

With the restoration of the church due to be completed around May and The

Queen celebrating her ninetieth birthday, it may well be a great opportunity to

plan something to commemorate both occasions in one hit.

Such a task requires co-ordinated planning, so if you would be interested in being

involved, coming up with some ideas as to how we can make something

worthwhile work, please contact David Mulrenan on 01728 628063 in the first

instance. He will collate the interest and find out what might be achievable.

Thank you

Brundish Film Programme – Winter 2015/16

Dates for your diary! Our planned programme of films in Brundish from February to May is as follows:

11 February 2016 - Everest

Based on a true story, two teams of climbers start their final ascent of Everest but are engulfed in

a violent storm and face an epic battle to survive. With fantastic photography and a real insight to

the risks of high level mountaineering this adventure drama stars Jake Gyllenhall, Keira Knight-

ley, Emily Watson, Josh Brolin and Robin Wright.

10 March 2016 - Suffragette

A drama that tracks the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement drawn from both

the genteel educated classes but also working women. Radicalised and turning to violence as the

only route to change they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality – their jobs,

their homes , their lives. Widely acclaimed by the critics, the film stars Carey Mulligan, Helena

Bonham-Carter, Anne-Marie Duff, Romola Garai and the inestimable Meryl Streep as Emmeline

Pankhurst.

14 April 2016 - The Lady in the Van

Alan Bennett’s stage play filmed with Maggie Smith in the title role as the eccentric homeless old

lady who lived in a van in his driveway for 15 years. Alex Jennings plays Bennettt and is sup-

ported by a roll call of well known actors including Roger Allam Jim Broadbent, , Dominic Coo-

per, James Corden, Clair Foy and Frances de la Tour. A comedy with a moral purpose.

12 May 2016 - Spectre

The latest Bond epic. Awarded 5 stars by many critics, the formula of fancy locations, fast cars,

fast women, furious fights, formidable shooting and felicitous escapes continues to enthral and

entertain. Daniel Craig is joined by Ralph Fiennes ( as”M” following the passing of Judy Dench

in Skyfall), Monica Bellucci and Léa Seydoux as well as the back up stalwarts such as Ben

Whishaw as”Q”.

There is no film in January 2016!

Room at the inn?

Small charity HOST is seeking friendly people who would like to learn more

about other countries and cultures and share their home life with adult

international students at UK universities.

Young adults from many countries would love to have a short homely break and

discover the real life of this country.

Host Kit Millington-Hore wrote:

“Meeting students from around the world is hugely fulfilling and satisfying.

Watching their pleasure as you introduce them to our ways of living,

particularly over Christmas, is extremely rewarding.”

Visits can be for a day, a weekend or a short stay.

Offering an invitation to someone who would otherwise be alone on a Univer-

sity campus can make a big difference.

Invitations are urgently needed from volunteer hosts, no matter their age, or how

far they live from a university.

FITNESS AND WELL-BEING

Thursday, 21st January at 7.00 for 7.30pm

The Community Heartbeat Trust will be

demonstrating the use of defibrillators

and explaining how the equipment works

and its benefits to the community in

saving precious minutes in the treatment

of sudden cardiac arrest at

BRUNDISH VILLAGE HALL usual “light refreshments” will be available!

The more people that know how to use the portable

defibrillator installed in our community, the more

chance there is of saving the life of a victim of

Sudden Cardiac Arrest

Everybody is welcome and no special skills are required, just your

willingness to play an important role in the event of a medical emergency

Work on the Village Green

You may have seen the signs up at the entrances to the village green

asking for it not to be used for a while.

This is to keep it safe during some much needed repairs

to the children’s play area and to the gates

which have become dilapidated.

The work is expensive and grants have been obtained to finance

completion which is expected around the end of November.

The Parish Council apologise for the inconvenience,

especially to our young ones.
