INTERVIEW WITH THE RECTOR

It was a great pleasure to be invited to ‘The Rectory’ to meet with the Revd

David Burrell and his wife Sue. They kindly managed to fit me in over their

lunchtime. We spent a very interesting couple of hours talking through a

wide variety of topics.

Both are from East Anglia, David from Norfolk and Sue from Suffolk. They

have known each other for many years, Sue’s husband was a close friend of

David. Sad events brought them closer together, Sue lost her husband to

cancer and David’s wife left the family to live alone and pursue a life looking

after animals. Between them they have 3 grown up children, Daniel, Adam

and Gemma and 2 chocolate brown Labradors.

David’s first career was as a civil engineer, more precisely a ‘Geo technician’.

Towards the middle of the 80s a Sarcoma developed on his face this turned

out to be a life changing event. He was admitted to the Royal Marsden

where 9 operations were performed over 9 weeks. During this traumatic

time he found that each night he would have a reoccurring dream of Jesus

holding him close. He found this deeply reassuring and led him to explore a

vocation within the church.

Having studied at Salisbury Theological College he returned to Bury St

Edmunds to be ordained in 1988. He spent his first 3 years as the Curate at

Ixworth, followed by 6 years at Haughly. David joined the Lark valley

Benefice and worked there for the next 18 years.

It would have been easy to stay there longer but pastures new beckoned

and drew him to this Benefice with 8 parishes and over 3000 people to

minister. They have been here in the Benefice for 3 years and will stay here

for another 7 years until retirement.

He is very involved with all schools in the Benefice and visits them regularly,

leading children in worship and learning about the church and its place in the

community. As a school governor he is on several committees including the

Ethos committee at Wilby school.

Whilst chatting I wondered if there was a typical day, very quickly came the

response,’ No one day is like the next!’. With 8 parishes there are 32

meetings a year of the PCC to attend, 52+ sermons and 6 magazine articles

to write over a year, continual open house, visits to the sick at home, in

hospital or care homes. Evenings spent organising weddings, funerals,

blessings, christenings and other services. Add in all the regular meetings

amongst various groups within the church and other denominations it makes

for a busy time. Do they ever get time to themselves, not often

I asked him what he would like to achieve in his time here. With some

thought he remarked that each parish was as distinct from the other with

differing strengths and needs. With this in mind he hoped to strengthen the

Benefice and leave each parish thriving. He believes his mission is to spread

and explain the word of a loving and giving God. He himself says he is not

here to judge anyone but to show people they are cared for and loved.

‘The church is a home and should be embraced as such. You should feel as if

you are ‘coming home’ when you enter a church’. DB

‘You don’t need to be a believer in God to attend church, for many it can be

the starting point, everyone is welcome’. DB

LETTER FROM THE RECTOR

At this end of year I tend to look back and think of all those whom I have

met or come into contact with over the past year. I often think of those who

give their time in the service of the church. I give thanks to God for all that

you do and I would like to say it is very much appreciated. Without you there

would be no life in the church and it would be a very sad lonely place.

You bring the church to life, you make it a clean welcoming place, you

brighten even the darkest corners with flowers. You bring music and enrich

our liturgy. Our wardens make sure the church is safe and maintained. Sides

people welcome people to our services and the coffee makers refresh our

visitors before they leave us. To name but a few.

In the course of your duties you could encounter a visitor who may be

dealing with fears, anxieties and pain. Churches can be seen as safe places

to come to for those of faith and no faith. If, for example, you were in church

arranging flowers, cleaning or getting ready for coffee, visitors often speak

to you. If they are in distress they may disclose some kind of neglect or

abuse that they have suffered in the past or are continuing to suffer. If that

happened would you know how to respond?

The Church of England nationally is aware of all that is being revealed in the

media about abuse of children and vulnerable adults. Also because of an

independent report that is being compiled, and will be out next March, it is

taking steps to make the church a safer place for everyone.

So how can you become part of making the church safer and more aware?

There is a new training course called ‘C0’ that is designed to get everyone to

a point where they are able to deal with disclosure and know where to refer

them. It can be done online and takes about an hour. The Church of England

believes that the more people who have an awareness of what to do if they

find themselves in a position of listening to someone revealing something

that is happening or has happened to them, will make our church and

communities safer for everyone.

Some of you will be asked to take this course personally but I would urge

anybody, however fleeting your involvement with the church may be, to take

it. All you have to do is go to the web site of The Diocese of St Edmundsbury

and Ipswich, once on the homepage look for the link that says

‘Safeguarding’. Hover the curser over Safeguarding and the dropdown box

will have several options, you need to take Safeguarding training. This will

take you to a screen that itemises all the training and if you scroll past this

you will come to the place where you can make your choice. Click on ‘C0’

and follow the instructions, be prepared with your email address and be

ready to make up or supply a username.

Once you have finished the course you will be able to print out a certificate.

You will also be emailed a document that you should forward on to Veirginia

Skoyles our administrator and she will keep a record of who has completed

the course. [email protected].

Thank you to everybody who takes part in the important endeavour and for

being an active part of our church family in our villages.

David Burrell

CHURCH NEWS

St Lawrence’s, Brundish

Service of Music and Readings for Advent. Sunday 3rd December

6:30pm Our church will be bathed in candlelight to usher in this short church season

of anticipation. Some have declared this to be their favourite service of the

year. You can understand why within the mellow atmosphere of our

delightful old place of worship as it is filled with wonderful music created by

the congregation and The Chantry Singers. Along with some well known

congregational hymns there will be choral offerings composed by

Rachmaninov, Britten and Raison. Please do come and join us. You will not

be disappointed.

Lessons and Carols for the Eve of Christmas. Sunday 24th December

6:30pm

It is fair to say that the carol service is now a major event in the life of our

village and it brings to our beautiful Place of Worship not only Brundish

people but folk from far and wide. As families of the village gather to

celebrate, your church will be waiting to welcome you through its doors as it

has for a thousand years. It is, to so many, the only place to be on

Christmas Eve. The Chantry Singers will be there, directed by Michael

Spencer. Please do make a point of joining what is always a packed church.

N. B. You are advised to get there a bit earlier to ensure a parking place. As

always the church will be floodlit and the access will be safer on the

churchyard path which has recently been equipped with increased lighting.

Christmas Midnight Mass. Sunday 24th December 11:30pm

To mark the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, people from places far

around unite on this most holy of nights. Whether you are confirmed or not,

you are warmly invited to join us.

If you could donate flowers from your garden for the church flower

arrangements, it would be a great help. If you would like to be a reader or

Carol Service. Wednesday 20th December 6:30pm.

It has been some years since Tannington has had a carol service so this year

ring out over the surrounding countryside to call the people of this tiny

community to its place of worship to celebrate this most wonderful time of

the year. All those of Brundish are strongly encouraged to join those of

Tannington to swell the congregation for what promises to be a memorable

occasion.

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

Wilby Parish Council

Wilby goes for Neighbourhood Plan

Following public consultation, the Parish Council has formally agreed to

proceed with the development of a Neighbourhood Plan for Wilby. Along

with the Local Plan prepared by the District Council, the Neighbourhood Plan

will help guide the future development and growth of the village, as

determined by the community. Once approved as a statutory document, it

must be taken into account by the Planning Authority (District Council) when

planning applications are being considered.

In developing the plan and going through the various stages involved, the

Parish Council will work closely with the community and in particular with

those residents who have expressed an interest in helping with the

preparation of the plan. The process is expected to take many months to

complete and the community will be regularly advised on progress. Public

meetings will be arranged as required.

Further information on the Neighbourhood Plan can be obtained from

Councillors Steve Lee (email: [email protected]) or Richard

Woolgrove (email: [email protected] ).

show up and give their time to run stalls etc. And finally, a big thank you to

all those of you who turned up and spent lots of money - a final total raised

will appear here in the next edition. My very best wishes - Sandra Apps

VILLAGE HALL NEWS

Wilby Coronation Hall

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone!

Our thanks go to all of you who have continued to support us this year and a

big welcome, albeit belated, to our new residents who have already

contributed so positively to the village community. Our hall is going from

strength to strength and we sit now in a much more viable position and have

improved the hall both internally and externally. We always welcome new

people onto our committee to keep our ideas fresh and our vision achievable.

Glory to the new born ‘BINS’!

Our recycling banks for both glass and textiles are now finally on site, so be

sure to get rid of all your festive empties at the village hall along with any

unwanted ex Christmas jumpers. The money accrued will be added to the

car park maintenance fund which is now in place.

Jingle bell rock

December’s PUB NIGHT is on the 1st and we look forward to hearing some

live music from Bob. We will also have a festive sing-song and a few nibbles

if you’re lucky! In the New Year due to popular demand we will be holding

two PUB NIGHTS per month, on the first and third Friday of the month, ding-

dong.

For we all want some “figgy pudding”

Autumn Supper Report

This years Autumn Supper to raise funds for St Mary’s Church, Wilby was

held at the Coronation Hall at the end of October. It was a lovely evening

with 60 people attending, including many new residents, which gave

everyone a good opportunity to meet up and socialise in what is very

pleasant surroundings with friendly bar staff. The ladies who cook decided to

ring the changes this year and an old family recipe was provided by Alex

Gwyn, which was originally her Greek Grandmother’s. Moussaka was made

following this recipe and served with a traditional Greek salad and French

bread. A vegetarian option completed the first course, followed by a large

selection of homemade desserts, coffee and mints.

The feedback has been very positive regarding the whole evening and just

over £900 was raised, along with £250 from the auction of the beautiful

watercolour painting of Wilby Church which had kindly been donated.

Thanks to all who came and supported the event, and to everyone who

helped in anyway, whether it was by donating a raffle prize, providing the

delicious food or helping get the hall ready, clearing up etc.

We hope to see everyone again at the next event.
