PATHWAYS TO STUDENT SUCCESS

Developmental Advising Model

A As AS aS S

(A=Advisor, S=Student)

Our goal at Ivy Tech is to provide you with the support you need to be successful in your life and in your career.

Q: What is a Credit Hour?

A: A credit hour is the number of hours you spend in class each week. Most classes are 3 credit hours.

Q: How much time will I have to study?

A: We recommend that for every 1 hour in class, you spend 2 hours outside of class studying. This means for a 3 credit hour class, your total time commitment would be a minimum of 9 hours per week.

Q: What does it mean to be a full-time student?

A: At Ivy Tech Community College you must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours to be considered a full-time student. This means taking 4 or 5 classes each semester.

*Students taking less than 12 credit hours are considered part-time.

How much time do I have for school?

There are 24 hours in a day and 168 hours in a

week.

First, determine how much of your time is

already committed before starting classes.

You can use the following chart to estimate your

committed time:

Commitments Hours/Day Hours/Week

Preparing for work 1 5

Travel to/from work 30 minutes 2 ½ hours

Working 4 hours 20 hours

Personal tasks 1 hour 7 hours

Preparing meals &

eating

1 hour 7 hours

Family time 2 hours 14 hours

Physical activity 1 hour 5 hours

Social activities 1 hour 7 hours

Sleep 7 hours 49 hours

Other activities Varies 2 hours (Church)

Totals 17 ½ hours 118 ½ hours

For Example- Here is

“Joe Student‟s” Schedule

Take the number of hours committed per week. Then use

the following information to see what your recommended

number of credit hours are.

– For example, Joe Student has 118 ½ hours already

committed before starting college.

– Now he can plan how many classes he can realistically

take this semester.

Remember that most classes are 3 credit hours.

Based on this chart, Joe can

realistically enroll in 15 credit hours.

What do I do if I have more time

committed than is available for school?

Sometimes starting college means cutting back

commitments in other areas.

Academic Advisors can assist you in deciding

how many courses you can handle at once.

Financial Aid

Ivy Tech participates in various

types of federal and state financial

aid programs which provide assistance to many students.

Ivy Tech also provides financial assistance to students from its own

resources. Students are encouraged to carefully explore all

financial aid options at their campus.

What is Financial Aid?

Financial aid is money that is given, paid, or loaned to you

to help pay for your degree at Ivy Tech.

There are several types of financial aid for college

students:

Grants & Scholarships are given as awards and do not require

repayment.

Loans are borrowed from a lending institution. You are required to

repay the loan amount and interest fees.

Work-Study Employment is a part-time job at a college where you

can earn a paycheck to help pay for your tuition and fees.

How Do I Know if I Qualify for Financial Aid?

Financial Aid is determined based on

information that you provide on your FAFSA.

FAFSA = Free Application for Federal Student Aid

This includes grants, loans, and work study.

Many scholarships also require you complete

the FASFA.

What happens after I file my FAFSA?

You will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) by mail

or electronically within 5 business days after you file.

How is Financial Aid Determined?

Complete your FAFSA. This will determine:

• Cost of Attendance (COA) = how much it costs for you to go to school (direct and indirect costs)

• Expected Family Contribution (EFC) = how much the U.S. government believes your family can afford to pay for college. This is based on Tax Information & Family Size

• Student Need = COA – EFC

*Your financial aid is based on your student need

Important Rules of Financial Aid

Plan Ahead

– Paperwork & documents need time to process

Attend all of your class sessions

Important Rules of Financial Aid(Continued)

You must maintain “Satisfactory Academic Progress”

– That means at least a 2.0 GPA and

– A 67% Completion Rate of Classes

• Failing & Withdrawal both count against completion rate

Understand Limits of Aid

– There is a maximum amount of money you can receive in a year and a lifetime

Important Rules of Financial Aid

(Continued)

Standards of Academic progress for

financial aid must be followed in order to

continue receiving aid. Withdrawing from

or failing classes may result in the loss of

financial aid.
