Last week I had the pleasure ofmeeting with local author BetsyMacDonald to talk about her newbook, “The Vulnerable”. A truestory, The Vulnerable is an intriguingbook about Betsy’s Autistic brotherMichael who suffers from Asperger’sand her journey to reconnect withher family and help Michael escape atortuous relationship with a couplethat was supposedly caring for himwhile all the while they were takingadvantage of him, abusing, and evenpoisoning him, slowly trying to mur-der him and make it look like an ac-cident just to gain his inheritance.

The Vulnerable has all the mak-ings of a Hollywood thriller, but likeI said, this tale is unfortunately non-fiction. Speaking of Hollywood,Betsy is meeting with some movieproducers that sought her out afterreading her book, so a screenplay

may very well be next. During our interview Betsy de-

scribed to me some of the horriblethings that these sick people did toher brother; it made my stomach flipflop. I can’t imagine how anyonecould live with himself or herselfafter committing such heinous acts;manipulating an autistic person fortheir own personal gain. It’s ab-solutely disgusting, and when I askedBetsy what her ultimate goal was intelling her story she replied, “I justwant to make people aware of whatcan happen to the ones we love, es-pecially those who may become vul-nerable without the right people intheir lives. I want to help people seethat they need to make a plan, espe-cially if they have a child or a lovedone with Autism. I want people toreally think about what could happento that person if they weren’t

Local Author Publishes “The Vulnerable”,an Intriguing Non-Fiction Novel About

Saving Her Brother From True Evilaround, that way they can prepareand hopefully prevent something ter-rible from happening, because onceit’s too late there might not be any-one around to protect them.”

I don’t want to give too muchof the book away, but what I will re-port is that Betsy has saved Michaeland he currently lives with Betsy andher husband locally. I personallyhave a close friend, whom I’veknown since high school, with As-perger’s so this story really hitshome for me. Betsy says, “Knowl-edge is power. It is my wish that byhearing our story, maybe one per-son’s life can be saved!”

Betsy MacDonald’s book “TheVulnerable” is for sale atAmazon.com. Betsy is a psychiatricR.N. holding positions as a MentalHealth Director, where she lecturesthe public and health agencies. She

has also run a hospital as Director ofNursing and has counseled and eval-uated youth in school settings. She isa nationally published author withnon-fiction cover stories. This truemystery has clairvoyance, hauntings, and gut wrenching emotion on ajourney to crack her birth familiescode of silence. Local Teachers Need Your Help! Bless Baby Bennett!

Born on June 15, 2015, BennettRohrbacker is a gift to this world.Born with many special needs, how-ever, at two weeks old, Bennett wasdiagnosed with 18q Deletion Syn-drome, which is a genetic deletion onthe 18th chromosome. In addition to this syndrome,Bennett has also been diagnosed withhypotonia, or low muscle tone. Hetakes several medications each day:one for hypothyroidism; one for py-lori spasm (a condition that preventshis stomach from emptying properly);and a cream for his eczema. He alsohas an aberrant right subclavian ar-tery, where his right subclavian arterypasses by his esophagus.

Bennett’s parents, local Tampateachers Natalia and Craig

Rohrbacker, have done an amazingjob of giving Bennett and his older, 2-year old brother Rowan all the loveand attention they need. They haveshown unending patience with bothan infant who cries frequently and anenergetic two-year-old boy – not tomention all of the students they workwith each day. They have an unshak-able faith in God, which is how theyget their strength each day.

Most recently, Bennett was foundto have moderate hearing loss in hisright ear and profound hearing loss inhis left ear. His hearing loss will re-quire assistive hearing devices for bothears – which insurance does not cover. These are just some of the difficultieschildren with 18q Deletion Syndrometend to face, along with a possibility ofautism and other developmental de-lays. With each specialist visit comesfifty-dollar co-pay plus additional, medical costs.

Due to these expensive medical

costs, Bennett’s godmother Julie isasking for your help. She says, “Iwould love to be able to take some ofthe worry off of their shoulders byproviding them with money for Ben-nett’s hearing devices, as well as all ofhis other current and future medicalcosts. Natalia and Craig are truly ablessing to baby Bennett. I am hopingthat others will want to give them

blessings back – in the form of prayersand finances if you are able. Thankyou for listening and God bless!”

Hillel Academy partners withTampa Urban Benefit Farms andHillsborough County FamilyPartnership Alliance

Hillel Academy is not new to gar-dening. The school has had an EarthBox vegetable garden for many years, but now the school has a true farmprogram and it is the first school-basedTUB Farm hydroponic farm in theTampa Bay area!

Hillel Academy partnered withTUB Farms, Tampa Urban BenefitFarms, a local non-profit organiza-tion that gives students multiplelearning opportunities while provid-ing fresh produce to food insecuremembers of our community. Theschool is the first school in a pilotprogram designed to connect“farmer” schools with beneficiaryagencies that will distribute the veg-etables and herbs to their clientswhile the students learn about inno-vative agriculture and grow systems.

TUB Farm founder Nava Kirk ap-proached Head of School Amy Wasserwith the idea of placing a TUB Farmon school property. It was a naturalchoice to reach out to Hillel Academy,Tampa Bay’s premier community dayschool, as Ms. Kirk is a school alumna.Middle School science teacher Amy

Basham serves as Hillel Academy’s liai-son and TUB Farm manager.

According to Ms. Kirk, “HillelAcademy is a progressive school that Iknew would embrace a program likeTUB Farms. The incredible receptionfrom students and faculty is more thanwe could have hoped for. We under-stand that teachers are incredibly busy,so we are designed it as a program toassist teachers with maintaining theTUB Farm, as well as to provide guid-ance on curriculum, give tours to stu-dents and coordinate the donation ofthe vegetables.”

“We are only as healthy as thefood we put into our bodies, and forfar too many in our community whorely on food assistance, the access totruly healthy nutritious food is ex-tremely limited,” says Ms. Kirk.“Students at Hillel Academy andTUB Farms would like to be part ofthe solution.”

The first donation was made onNov. 6, 2015 to HCFPA, Hillsbor-ough County Family Partnership Al-liance, which helps people in thedependency system including fosterparents and relative caregivers. Veg-etable donations from Hillel Academywill directly benefit those who dependon the HCFPA food pantry.

“HCFPA is excited about thenew partnership with Hillel Academyand the TUB Farms. We look forwardto sharing fresh fruits and vegetableswith the foster families and the needyof our community that come to ourfood pantry to a receive food on amonthly basis,” says Kim Hernandez,HCFPA President.

The TUB Farm is a school-wideendeavor at Hillel Academy. Eachclass attended hydroponic farm les-sons and planted its own tower of 16plants, which they monitor fre-quently. The TUB Farm vegetableswere grown from both seed andseedling and almost every studenthas planted his or her own seed orsprout. Fall crops growing at HillelAcademy include cucumbers, swisschard, lettuce, squash, green beansand basil.

“In my opinion,” says Mrs.Basham, “growing food crops con-tributes an incredibly important as-pect to a child's education. In today'sworld of processed and factory-pro-duced everything, students often for-get that much of their food originatedas a plant that can be grown, har-vested and enjoyed. All branches ofscience can be taught through thesimple process of growing a vegetable

garden. When students are able tocontribute to growing vegetables, they are able to connect with the sci-ence, see its validity in their lives, andhopefully learn to make wise science-based food choices as they grow up. Ifwe can add an element of donatingthe vegetables to serve our commu-nity, the experience becomes evenmore meaningful.”

TUB Farms worked with UrbanOasis Farm Technology to design theschool’s hydroponic farm. By studyingand working with a hydroponic farmthe students are learning that hydro-ponic growing methods do not usesynthetic chemicals to treat bugs anddisease. The system uses sterile, reusable growing medium; coco coir, instead of soil, which is sterile, sustain-able and renewable. With the system, the desired amount of food is deliv-ered to the plant’s roots.

Hillel Academy students receivemore than a science education as theywork on the school’s TUB Farm. They practice one of the most impor-tant concepts in Judaism, tikkun olam– repairing the world.

Community service is very impor-tant to the community day school’sstudents of all ages. Donating school-grown crops to HCFPA is a perfect fit.

hardwood flooring in my living room, dining room and hallways and had afabulous experience. So when we de-cided to replace the carpet in one ofour bedrooms with hardwood floors,we knew we would only consider giv-ing the job to Jim Yeager and his com-pany. Jim is the ultimate professionaland he is THE VERY BEST at whathe does. He’s the only vendor I’veused in Tampa that does WHAT hesays his company is going to do,WHEN they say they’re going to do itand for HOW MUCH they are goingto do it. We had agood idea of what we wanted andworked with their designer Melanie tofill in the details. She was great towork with and Jim Yeager also keptthe project in line and on time. JimYeager clearly cares about the qualityof the finished project.”
