From The Editor Matt Selby

Happy Halloween New Tampa!Halloween is one of those holi-

day’s that doesn’t hold much signifi-cance as far as what it stands for thesedays. Originally a contraction of AllHallows Eve celebrated by a numberof countries to remember their de-ceased love ones, this day includes atheme of fun and humor to confrontthe power of death. I understandthat some people out there may stillbelieve it’s a pagan tradition, butwhat Halloween is really about in2015 America is getting the chanceto be someone or something you’renot for the night.

Little girls tend to gravitate to-wards princesses or witches, and littleboys always seem to be superheroesor monsters. My wife and I don’thave kids yet (although with eachpassing year it’s tougher to hold heroff) but for at least the past 6 yearswe’ve joined my young cousins trickor treating. We love walking aroundwith them, watching their little faceslight up with excitement after they

score a handful of candy from eachhouse….well almost each house, there’s always at least one home inevery neighborhood that only allowsone piece of candy per kid and whenI say candy I mean that Werthershard candy that no kid likes anyway. You know what I’m talking about, that stuff grandma used to keep onthe coffee table that you tried onceand never ate again!

The neighborhood hauntedhouses are also a lot of fun and al-most every New Tampa neighbor-hood has at least one guy on theblock that has decided to dedicatethe entire month of October totransforming his home garage intothe perfect scare zone! Many familieswill drive into our neighborhoodsfrom outside areas just to experiencethese fun little haunted houses.Once a good one is found, it’s notlong before a bunch of new facesstart to pour in.

Halloween may just be a silly ex-

cuse to play dress up and get a bunchof free candy but what’s wrong withthat? It makes for excellent familytime, pictures that will be remem-bered and cherished forever (justlook at our little scooby doo’s on the

cover) and it helps keep dentists inbusiness due to the high spike in cav-ities afterwards. Just kidding, but se-riously, make sure your kids brushtheir teeth! Stay safe out there andenjoy yourselves!

Celebrating Halloween with our little cousins. From L to R, Co-Editor Alexis Selby, Hayden, Haylee, Hannah and

Publisher and Editor Matthew Selby.

can minimize and in some cases pre-vent delays in development. We candecrease and possibly prevent the needfor special education and related serv-ices once a child reaches school-age.”Jill added, “Working together withboth the family and the child is impera-tive to success. Families are involvedevery step of the way, being shownhow to use newly learned skills in theirhome and/or school environments. Asa team, the therapists create a treatmentplan that best fits your child’s individualneeds and will work with both you andyour child to implement the plan tohelp ensure optimal results.”

Communication Corner also of-fers school support services to familiesthat are trying to obtain an IEP (Indi-vidualized Education Plan) or cur-rently have one in place. Theirtherapists will even attend your child'smeeting, and provide classroom sug-gestions, standardized assessment in-formation and more.

Communication Corner works

with children of all ages, from veryyoung infants, including newborns, all the way up to young adults –around 21 years old. You’re probablywondering – why would a newbornneed a therapist?

Many people don’t realize thatspeech pathology involves so muchmore than teaching a child how topronounce and say words and sounds. In fact, a huge part of speech pathol-ogy involves swallowing and feedingdisorders. “Speech-Language Patholo-gists are specialists in swallowing andfeeding disorders,” says Jill. Occupa-tional Therapists work with infants forfeeding disorders as well, in additionto self-regulation. Furthermore, manyinfants are born with Torticollis, acondition that inhibits flexion, exten-sion or twisting of the muscles in theneck. A physical therapist should bepursued in this scenario.

Cigar City Brewpub – Food, Fun & Beer !By Matthew Selby

By now, I’m sure you've had achance to enjoy Cigar City BrewPub.Opening its doors in April 2013,Cigar City Brewpub was created withthe simple goal of giving Tampa greatfood to go with great beer.

The menu is a little Cuban, a littlesouthern, a little Italian and all Tampa. It’s a hip, welcoming and casual envi-ronment to enjoy a good time withfriends and family. Since our last articleabout CCBP, some changes have hap-pened and they’re for the better.Changes in the kitchen have resultedin a more consistent quality and bettervalue from the dishes. “We are stillsourcing as much produce, beef andseafood as we can locally, and continueto offer only the highest quality hor-mone-free and grass fed meats, as wellas fresh calamari from Rhode Islandand shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico,”says General Manager Russell Simons.

Recently revising the Brunchmenu to offer a wider variety ofchoices for guests, Chef Gerry servesup a variety of delicious new options,as well as some classic dishes like the

crab cake Benedict and the option tobuild your own omelet. This brunch isepic! The chef and brewer work handin hand to help combine their talentsfor each guest’s benefit. Gerry says,“We even use beer brewed here insome of the sauces and dishes on themenu. The signature salad dressing

uses a farmhouse saison beer from thebrewery called Guava Grove, and thepancakes from brunch use a little ofthe Cacique porter. A must try is theflowerless Hunahpu cake with Madurobrown ale and chilies.”

Walking into Cigar City Brew-pub, you can’t help but notice the in-

novative décor, almost all of which hasbeen “up-cycled” from their brewery. From their fixtures made from brew-ery barrels, to the beer cans aroundthe lights to their built in bar, which isalso made out of cans, this eco-friendlyBrewpub brings a little bit of thebrewery to you; even the tables areup-cycled, made from re-used palletsand old brewery equipment. Gettingpast the décor, one can hardly miss thehuge brewery canisters, which are notso conspicuously hidden in the cornerof the bar area, where Head BrewerMatt Tucker brews up some amazingcreations! Matt has recently won aGold medal for the Cacique Porterbrewed here in the U.S. Beer OpenChampionship 2015 and a Bronzemedal for the Chocolate Stout namedPopol Vuh in the same competition. In 2013, his Vienna Lager won theGold Medal as Best of show in theBest Florida Beer Championship.

Looking for a recommendationon food? As tough as it is to justchoose one dish, the smoked sword-fish tacos are still my favorite at CigarCity Brewpub, boasting an aromaticdistinction of Smokey goodness. From

Cigar City’s brunch menu showcases a delicious selection of amazing optionsto choose from, including their crab cake Benedict, featured above.

the first bite you will be hooked –wrapped in a crisped malanga boat, the smokiness of the rum-curedswordfish is perfectly complementedby their fabulously sweet homemadepickled cabbage and combines for anamazing flavor that is out of thisworld. I’m a fishing guide on theweekends and I’ve had my fair share offish in my day so trust me when I saynot only is this cooked to perfection, but it’s fresh off the boat as well!

Any burger on the menu is sureto impress, but I really enjoy theirgrass fed burger, which obviouslyfeatures grass fed beef, as well ashouse-smoked bacon, sofrito, home-made pickles, sweet plantains toppedoff with an excellent aioli sauce andserved on a brioche bun.

Have a craving for Cuban fare? The Cuban sandwich will satisfy you, guaranteed!

If you’re a vegetarian who enjoys

a good pairing with a fine brew you’rein luck! Cigar City has vegetarian op-tions as well, such as their black beancakes, served with fire roasted salsaverde and chipotle sour cream. JoeRedner (father of Cigar City’sfounder) is a vegan and he is alwayshappy when he eats here. CCBPprides itself on having enough veggiesto be creative and accommodate vege-tarians. Don’t forget, even if the menudoesn’t tell you which beer to pairwith every item, your knowledgeableserver will happily point you in theright direction!

If you’re looking for a fun,

neighborhood atmosphere with greatfood options and a plethora of drinksto go along with it, look no further.Come on by and see what all thebuzz is about!

The Sky Is The Limit At Corbett Preparatory School Of IDSAlexis Selby

Touring the Corbett Preparatorycampus, I was in awe. Nestled amongstthe Cypress trees on a beautiful lakeand adjoining pond, the picturesquescenery reminded me of somethingstraight out of a fairytale. Walkingalong the boardwalk, it was easy to seewhy this school is often referred to as“The Magic Kingdom.” Yet, as breath-taking as it is in the outside, what goeson inside is even more impressive.

Founded by two moms with adream, Corbett Preparatory School ofIDS, previously named IndependentDay School, raises the bar for the fu-ture of education, going far beyond thebasic fundamentals of teaching andpreparing their students not only howto succeed in the classroom, but moreimportantly – how to succeed in life.Their teaching methods are exemplary, which are a reflection of their teachers, who are by far some of the best in thenation. “Every child and every family isdifferent,” says Dr. Joyce Burick Swarz-man, the Headmaster at Corbett Prep.“We pride ourselves on providing ourstudents with individualized instructionand the opportunity to interact with

others in positive ways. What we are isan engaging preparation for life – eachand every day.”

Upholding a superior level of excel-lence in regards to student education, the teachers at Corbett Prep believeevery child is gifted in his or her ownway, and thus have a unique curriculum, specially designed to showcase each stu-dent’s independent skills and attributes. In addition to weekly and monthlytrainings, every teacher at Corbett Prepis endorsed in gifted education througha master’s level grant with the Universityof South Florida’s Department of Edu-cation and the entire faculty has recentlycompleted Harvard Graduate educationclasses. Corbett Prep teacher Mr. Scott, says, “As teachers, we receive a greatfoundation in education. We are contin-ually being educated and learning newthings. A+ Action Approach toLeadership and Change

Corbett Preparatory School of IDSwas founded upon a strong set of princi-pals and values and there are seven com-mon characteristics, known as the A+Action Approach to Leadership andChange, that have shaped its existence;each of these components have gonebeyond words and ideas, translating intoaction and steps that have propelled theschool forward over the years.

Model the Models – “At CorbettPrep, our teachers use research-basedand best-practice knowledge on howstudents can learn best and with themost joy,” says Karen Vaughan, PublicRelations Coordinator at CorbettPreparatory School of IDS.

their own children.” Embrace a Vision- The goal at

Corbett Prep is to create joy and makelearning fun, and by encouraging stu-dents to embrace a vision and set at-tainable goals, the teachers areproviding their students with a founda-tion for the future, instilling in them avaluable set of principals that they cancarry with them through life. “We chal-

lenge our students to reach their high-est potential and beyond,” adds Dr.Swarzman. “There are limitless oppor-tunities for children and the excitementfor teachers is figuring it out. Dr. Swarzman says, “Weare in the business of educating studentsto be the best that they can be and todo that you have to work with teacherswho are willing to do the same.”

Persevere and Persist – To Main-tain purpose and remain persistent, de-spite adversity or difficulty, and nevergive up on your dreams.

What The StudentsHave to Say:

On my previous visit I had thepleasure of meeting a variety of differentstudents, ranging in age from 1st gradersto 8th graders; their excitement forlearning was obvious. When asked howyou treat people, each student happilyresponded, “with dignity and respect.”

6th grade student Emma says,“Everybody is really nice and the teach-ers are fun. I like the open campus andall the afterschool activities. I take pri-vate piano lessons and dance. In Span-ish, if you are lucky and you speakSpanish well, when exchange studentscome from Madrid you get to hostthem for 3 weeks.”

What Emma is referring to is theInternational Exchange program atCorbett Prep. This past year Emma’s

family hosted a student from Madrid, who was accompanied by one of herteachers. The teachers visit Corbett tolearn about the curriculum and teach-ing methods in order to bring back theknowledge they have learned to helptheir schools. This summer Emma’sfamily will be hosting another exchangestudent from China.

Taylor, another 6th grade student, says, “This school is not like any otherschool. It is special and different in itsown unique way. There are a lot of activi-ties. The games are educational, but fun, allowing us to learn in an exciting way.”

“We are very real with our stu-dents, therefore we expect them to bereal with us,” says Dr. Swarzman. Weexpect them to be positive, purposefuland passionate about what they do andwhat they learn.”
