Kids and Canines - An Assistance Dog Training ProgramBelieving in kids and empowering

them to take control of their lives, onedog at a time, Kids and Canines unitesat-risk students and dogs in theirunique program that is truly making adifference in Tampa Bay community.

Located on the Dorothy Thomascampus in Tampa, Kids and Canineswas originally founded in 1998 with agrant from the Justice Department. The sole purpose of this programinitially was to help truancy students, founded upon the belief that givingthese kids the responsibility of trainingand caring for a dog would help tokeep them in school - and it worked! When the grant was not renewed, theprogram was continued as a part ofthe school program at DorothyThomas, and the success rates havebeen through the roof!

“The program has grownsignificantly since its inception,” saysJo Deck, Chairman of the Board forKids and Canines. “We are now a501(c)(3) organization, which we feltwas necessary in order to be able tosignificantly grow the program.”

Kids and Canines is an electivethat students at Dorothy ThomasSchool can apply for. Jo says, “This isa class and our textbook is the dog. There is an academic side, but the

most important things that we teachinclude how to not only show lovetowards a dog, but how to loveyourself. Through this, the studentslearn how to properly deal withanger management and self esteemissues. The kids that we see have veryserious behavioral issues; many havedropped out of school and havesome sort of social problems orpersonality disorder. Most arereferred to Dorothy Thomas byeither the school counselor or theirown personal child counselor.”

Once a student gets accepted intothe program, they sign a contract, which holds them accountable fortaking care of the dogs. They aretaught how to train the dogs, as wellas how to groom, feed, and properlycare for them. This encourages thekids to come to school, and givesthem a reason to show up, becausethey know their dog needs them, andif they don’t come, their dog won’tget the necessary attention it deserves.

In addition to the obviousbenefits, this program gives thesechildren so much more! It teachesthem unconditional love and givesthem self worth, helping them tobuild their self esteem and give thempurpose in life. It teaches them the

importance and power of education. These dogs need the kids just asmuch as the kids need the dogs.“The program has been a hugesuccess, and the bond between thechildren and the dogs has proven tobe enough to keep these at-risk kidsin school,” says Jo.

Student Esme, is just one of theirmany success stories. Jo says, “Whenshe first came to us, Esme had suchbad self esteem that she didn’t cometo school for over a year. Workingwith the dogs and the bond sheformed helped her learn unconditionallove. She also learned acceptancewithout judgement; the dogs relied onher on a daily basis; they needed her.Esme is now an ace groomer andteaches grooming to other students inthe program. She has been in programfor over three years and is going toGaither High School next year. Hergoal is to one day be a Vet assistant. And actually, she was recently adoptedand both of her parents are teachers atthe Dorothy Thomas School. This hasgiven Esme stability, love andacceptance in ways she has never hadbefore. Esme has done an amazing jobof turning her life around!”

Kids and Canines is helping tochange the lives of these students;

and it doesn’tend there! Notonly has theirprogramhelped thestudents bygiving themaccountability, companionshipand purpose, but the dogsthat they traingo on tobecome serviceand therapydogs for thosein need.

“It is a win-win situation,”says Jo. “This program not onlybenefits the kids, but it also benefitsthe person who gets the dog. The kidstrain the dogs with the hopes that theirdog will go on and do even greaterthings in the community. Our dogs aretrained to be service and therapy dogsand are placed with many differenttypes of people, such as those sufferingfrom Parkinson’s, MS, or youngerchildren with Autism.” Since itsinception, Kids and Canines has placed86 dogs throughout Tampa Bay andsurrounding communities!

and Canines

Volunteers Wanted! Due to their rapid growth over

the past few years, Kids and Canines isconstantly looking for volunteers.Their biggest need is for puppy sitters.Jo says, “Being a puppy sitter is such awonderful experience. As a puppysitter you would temporarily look aftera dog when a puppy raiser has to goout of town. We are also looking forpuppy raisers. A puppy raiser issomeone who agrees to house the dogfull time for 18-24 months as they arebeing trained. Everything is paid for -food, vet bills, leashes etc. - and all you

have to do is be able to drop them offevery morning before school and pickthem up after. Essentially it’s just likedropping your dog at day-care.”

Donations and SponsorshipsNeeded

Kids and Canines is doing somany great things for the community, but in order for them to continuedoing what they are doing, they relyon generous donations andsponsorships from caring individualswho want to help make a difference.

There are many different ways in

which you can help. The first is simplymaking a donation. That can be doneon-line or by sending a donationdirectly to the program. There aredifferent levels of giving that areoutlined in their Sustainer Program, including a $5000 donation tosponsor and name a dog! You are ableto follow the dog through its trainingand will receive reports as to the howyour sponsored dog is doing, as wellas progress pictures. With this, youhave the ability to come visit the dogat any time. All donations made go tohelping the at-risk children improvetheir lives.

Jo says, “The current Board ofDirectors is a very active board andcommitted to the success of the Kidsand Canines Program. They arefocused on raising more funds andhelping more at-risk students changetheir lives!”

Kids and Canines is currently indesperate need of a van. Even havingdone a very successful fundraiser toraise funds for a new van, they havehad difficulty finding the right van forthe right price. Ideally, they need an 8-9 passenger van - preferably a FordT150, or a van with specificationssimilar. If you can help or knowsomeone who can help in this area, please call (813) 558-5406.

Kids and Canines SummerCamp Program
