Dear Texas Hereford Association & Texas Hereford Youth Foundation Scholarship Committee,

Thank you so much for honoring me with your scholarships this last two years with the Texas Hereford High Placing Junior, the Texas Here-ford Scholarship and the Texas Here-ford State Show Scholarship this last spring. Your faith and support of me was so humbling and I am very ex-cited to attend Texas A&M College of Architecture with your scholarship.

If I can ever be of help to your committee in any way, please let me know. My greatest hope after getting my degree from Texas A&M is to re-turn to my community and give back as they have given to me.

Thank you again so very much for this scholarship.

Edward M. CumbieEdward M. Cumbie, life-long

Coke County ranchman and resident, passed away July 13, 2020 at age 97. Not surprisingly, he was gathering and hauling cattle just a few days be-fore his death.

Mr. Cumbie was born October 27, 1922 to Richard and Emma Cumbie. A proud graduate of Bronte High School and Texas A&M University, he served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps dur-ing World War II and flew various types of aircraft.

After his military service, he re-turned home and partnered with his father on the Cumbie ranch north of Bronte which was originally settled by his grandfather R.M. Cumbie in 1890.

While in his teens, he had started his own Hereford herd with money earned picking cotton.

Cumbie spent a lifetime expand-ing and improving their herd, and he would go on to serve as president of the Concho Hereford Association and as a director for the Texas Hereford

Stanley “Stan” Keller Horwood

Stanley “Stan” Keller Horwood, age 88, transitioned peacefully into his heavenly home on Saturday, Au-gust 8th, 2020. Shortly after his pass-ing, loved ones encircled him with prayer; a family tradition Stan has passed down and that will live on with future generations.

Stan was born in Gonzalez, Tex-as, on September 30th, 1931. His par-ents Reverend Stanley R. and Robena Keller Horwood adored him as he was the youngest of five children, includ-ing three sisters: Esther Dunagin, Ruth Dunagin, and Mary Dibrell, and brother Richard Keller Horwood. A be-loved son, Stan reminisced about his loving mother and father often and was grateful for the strong faith and hard work ethic they instilled in him.

A talented athlete, Stan attended Texas Lutheran University on a foot-ball scholarship and then transferred to Southwestern University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts de-gree. He then went on to attend Per-kins Seminary at Southern Methodist University (SMU) where he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Hildebrand. After their first encounter flying kites, Stan and Elizabeth were inseparable and were united in marriage in 1955.

Stan and Elizabeth moved to Ster-ling City, Texas in 1956. After prayer-ful consideration, Stan elected to leave the pastorate and work for Eliz-abeth’s father H.L. “Hilde” Hildeb-rand. Learning the family’s ranching operation was no easy task, however, Stan was dedicated to being a good steward of the land and did so while raising children Lisa, Larry, Lenard, and Lonnie.

Stan shined in his dual roles of rancher and “dad” and became the manager of four Foster Hildebrand ranches in 1962. In 1979, Horwood Ranch Company was formed, and Stan served as both President and advisor for over 40 years while work-ing alongside his sons, two of which are stockholders in the family corpo-ration. Stan utilized techniques that maximized the potential of the land and in 1999 he was named Conser-vation Rancher of the Year. He was a long-time member and honorary director of the Texas Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and was presented with the TCU Ranch Man-agement Partners Award in 2015.

A pillar of the Sterling City com-munity for over a half-century, Stan has given generously of his time and talents to many worthy causes. He has served as the Sterling City School Board President, Chairman of the Board at the First National Bank, sup-ported the FFA and 4-H club, and was an active member of the Lions Club. He also served as lay leader, Sunday School teacher, choir member, and Finance Committee Chairman at the First United Methodist Church.

Stan brought countless people to

Christ through his godly example and involvement with ministries includ-ing Walk to Emmaus, The Methodist Mission Home, and Gideons Interna-tional. In 2014, he honored the legacy of his late wife Elizabeth by estab-lishing a scholarship for theological students attending the Perkins School of Theology at SMU and Asbury Theological Seminary. For these ef-forts, he was presented with the Fran-cis Asbury Award which recognizes the support of higher education and campus ministries within the United Methodist Church.

While Stan’s life was filled with great achievements, his greatest trea-sure and joy was found spending time with the Lord and his family. “Papa and Nanny” never missed a sporting event and proudly adorned the but-tons of all their favorite players. Papa supported the education of all his children, grandchildren, and great-children, and encouraged everyone to pursue their passions. He was so giv-ing and yet never asked for anything in return. His humility, servant heart, integrity, and faith are a legacy that his loved ones will carry on.

Stan is survived by his children and their spouses: daughter Lisa and Art Spanjer, sons: Larry and Linda Horwood, Lenard and Debbie Hor-wood, Lonnie and Kody Horwood; grandchildren: Bill and Melissa Or-sak, Ellen and Bobby Shoemaker, Lau-ra and Derrick Bibb, Bailey and Lyle Horwood, Lane and Lathen Horwood, Valerie and Katlin Horwood, Carly and Sam Janca, Trisha and Reggie Halfmann, Tate Horwood, and Tristan Himes. Stan is also survived by his great-grandchildren Owen, Miles, and Grant Orsak, Braddock, Weston, and Stratton Bibb, Bobby, Annie, and Clayton Shoemaker, and Grayson and Keller Halfmann. Stan was also anx-iously awaiting the arrival of Baby Boy Janca and Baby Horwood who he will be watching over from heaven. The family would like to extend a special thanks to his loving caregiver Carmen Rios who lovingly cared for Stan over the last seven years. ★

Association. Additionally, he was in-strumental in founding the Junior Hereford Breeding Show at the San Angelo Stock Show.

In addition to ranching and buy-ing and shipping cattle, Cumbie was an area field representative for Texas Farm Bureau where for 31 years he was an ardent voice for agriculture at state and national levels. He helped establish a Farm Bureau citizenship summer camp for youth where values such as leadership, patriotism and re-sponsibility were taught – core beliefs he cherished and championed.

Supporting Ed in his many en-deavors was his wife and constant companion of 68 years, Jane Luby Cumbie. Together they raised a family of four daughters: Linda (Pat) Glad-den, Susan (Paul) Williams, Dawn Burwick and Shelley Cumbie. Also, he was survived by eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Gifted with a servant’s heart, Cumbie was active with his home-town’s VFW, Lion’s Club, school board and First Baptist Church as well as being a six-decade volunteer with Round-Up for Rehab which benefits West Texas Rehabilitation Center. ★

September marks the end of another hot and dry Texas summer and brings hope for a successful fall sale sea-

son. This issue includes ads for many of our fall sales. These sales and the many private treaty cattle available and listed on our “Cattle for Sale” page are a tribute to the breeders and their cattle who have weathered the harsh summer heat to keep these genetics available for breeding stock. Please avail yourself to the opportunities to upgrade your breeding programs. Our Hereford breed offers many traits needed to be successful and profitable in these new and trying times. One constant through all of this is that our breed, Here-fords, has thrived and encouraged more people to look to our breed as their preference.

I applaud our members and breeders as we progress through all the distractions our business and country have and are enduring. Most everyone is staying the course and doing business as close to normal as possible.

I congratulate all of our Texas juniors for their participa-tion and winnings at JNHE. You make us proud. Read the results elsewhere in this issue.

THA will co-sponsor our tenth annual Fall Classic con-signment sale in partnership with the Buffalo Livestock Auc-tion. This year we will again have the Red Alliance group of Red Angus breeders to participate with both bulls and

females. We appreci-ate the interest and consignments from our members in this venture as well as the cooperation from the owners of Buf-falo Livestock. We hope to see many of you at this sale on October 21. A suc-cessful sale is a re-flection for everyone involved in the Texas Hereford industry.

Entries are now due for both the 52nd annual White-face replacement female sale and the Powerhouse Invita-tional sale. Hereford cattle will again be stalled in the Mon-crief building. We have expanded the ages of our pen bull show to be held on Saturday morning and will sell some of these bulls in our sale on Sunday. I thank you in advance for your early response to entry deadlines. ★

C BAR ONE 1326 BAILEE 0226 ETC BAR ONE 1326 BAILEE 0226 ET 44123044 • 2/19/20 — We have been excited about these matings and it sure did not disappoint. Recently Bailee has been our most constant producer of show ring winners and some of the elite young females in the breed. Lots 6, 7 and 8 sired by Roll the Dice have that elite show female look. Lot 6 is polled while lots 7 and 8 are horned so it will be exciting to split these up.

C BLUEPRINT LADY 0097 ETC BLUEPRINT LADY 0097 ET 44122925 • 1/7/20 — We feel this is an extreme blend of genetics with precision and power. These females get the balance and look from the sire Blue Print and the donor dam 4297 provides the power. She is a massive built heavy constructed female that provides the horsepower. When mated to a sire that is so well made and correct this is the result. We feel this lot 15 female is so correct and well‐made that she will be hard to get around. The lot 16 female has a bit more of a broody cow look and has more pigment.

C 6018 X651 LASS 0067 ETC 6018 X651 LASS 0067 ET 44122896 • 1/6/20 — Here is one of the most intriguing females we have ever offered. These kind are so hard to make because she bridges the gap between cattle that have phenotype and a genetic profile that cattlemen are in constant search for. We would like to talk phenotype here initially because we feel that is first and foremost. This is a huge bodied broody looking female that will likely be the heaviest weaning female of our entire 2020 crop. She is a standout and has as much true breeding value as any female we have sold. Now study the numbers and imagine the possibilities when mated to the hottest sires of the future. You can’t find holes in this one.

CCC PLAYBOOK PAULA 0117CCC PLAYBOOK PAULA 0117 19778465 • 1/15/20 — This year we are offering some Angus open heifers and spring pairs. This is a well‐made heifer calf with lots of balance and great structure. She blends in so nice through her rib cage and has a great look from the side. We feel this one has huge potential especially when you consider who her parents are.

C CLASSY DIANA 0033 ETC CLASSY DIANA 0033 ET 44122865 • 1/3/20 — We begin the offering of the 2020 edition fall female sale with a trio of females that have all been standouts since birth. As with any flush these sisters are not all exactly alike and we have wavered back and forth as to which is the best but they will all be very competitive. Up until last season embryo conception has been a little light on the donor dam after her great career as a show heifer and now she is producing great ones in volume. Lot 2 is polled and lot 3 and 4 are horned so it will be intriguing to get these split up at the large National shows. These are exactly what we were hoping for from this mating.

43987463 • 1/17/19 — Genesis has proven to be one of the most popular yearling bulls in the history of the breed. He is ideal in his phenotype combined with a tremendous EPD profile. His striking color pattern and being homozygous polled will add to the value of his offspring. A limited number of semen packages have soldto date and only 10 packages will be sold for the fall breeding season.Owned with Express Ranches, Barber Ranch, King Herefords and Dry Creek Farms.

43889959 • 1/12/18 — Belle Heir is proving to be one of the greatest breeding bulls we have ever used. He combines calving ease with extra growth and body length in his progeny. A limited number of semen packages have been sold thus far and we have heard great comments on his offspring from across the country. His ability to transmit extra pigment is another bonus. Dams average progeny record is IMF ratio of 116 and Ribeye ratio of 102. He is enrolled in the NRSP and we feel confident that his popularity will continue to grow.Owned with Knox Brothers, San Angelo, TX

Lots of body depth, long spined, huge hindquarter. A real broody look but still maintains a feminine look. Among the leaders in the breed for growth, maternal and $CHB. We were able to obtain her from Express after they purchased some embryos and with her carrying a heifer calf by Genesis we sure hate to part with her. Without question one of the top donor prospects we have offered with a great disposition.

44077429 • 8/23/19 — Trio of Bailee Fall aged females here that are all horned. These females may very well be the best in the entire offering. Lots 22 and 23 are full sisters to 8105. She was the high selling female in our 2018 sale at $99,000 and went on to be named champion polled female in Fort Worth 2020. Lot 22 is a massive made powerful female who has a lot of the same qualities as her sister. Lot 23 is perhaps the show heifer of the two with a long feminine neck and head and great look from the side.

September 2020 • TEXAS HEREFORD 21

Round-Up for Rehab – a 61-year-old fundrais-er benefiting patients at West Texas Rehabilitation Center – was born out of necessity at the tail end of the 1950’s drought.

Conda and Edna Wylie’s donation of a pen of calves to help fund the first therapeutic pool at West Texas Rehab spurred neighboring ranchers to join in – and the simple, yet powerful gesture of “neighbor-helping-neighbor” has provided a sturdy foundation for giving since 1960.

During the succeeding decades ranchers, farmers and agri-business leaders have donated livestock, crops, cash – even baked goods – to fund this important drive.

Just like today’s uncertain times, previous years have been tough, posing unique challeng-es – economic downturns, fluctuating markets, terrorism and in addition to persistent drought, pandemic diseases and just plain hard times.

Yet always believing in the mission of West Texas Rehab Center – “to serve those with dis-abilities to the fullest extent possible, regardless of their financial circumstance” – the agriculture community has always dug deep in their pockets and persevered.

Heading up this year’s drive is celebrity spokesman and popular Western entertainer Red Steagall. He is being ably assisted by Randy Car-son, Ikie Taylor and John Ekdahl in the Big Coun-try and Bob Helmers and Jody Frey in the Concho Valley area.

Donors and supporters are invited to join Red and other volunteers at the Abilene sale, Tues., September 15 and at the San Angelo sale on Thurs., September 17. Activities will take place at the Abilene Livestock Auction and Producers Livestock Auction, respectively, keeping health regulations in mind.

Area sales also are slated in Coleman on Oct. 7 and Stephenville on Oct. 17th.

Another duo exhibiting their own determina-tion and toughness is seven-year-old West Texas Rehab patient Charles and his mom Heather who sought out Rehab services three years ago.

At the time, young Charles, who had been diagnosed with cerebral palsy disorder, couldn’t walk more than three or four steps without falling and could not talk or communicate, according to Heather.

However, caring donors, top-notch equip-ment/facilities and knowledgeable pediatric ther-apists like Ashley helped make a life-changing difference in this eager, young child’s life.

After receiving physical and occupational therapy, plus speech and orthotics, the soon-to-be first grader now keeps up with mom when she’s grocery shopping, enjoys “Paw Patrol” with younger brother Trent and is learning sign lan-guage and alternative ways to communicate.

“I just don’t know what we would have done without this place (the Rehab Center) and without their people,” Heather said with obvious gratitude.

And this active little fellow is just one of hun-dreds of patients – young and old – helped daily at West Texas Rehabilitation Center campuses in Abilene, San Angelo and Ozona.

Presenting sponsor for this fall’s Round-Up campaign is Ekdahl-Nelson Real Estate of Abilene and Stamford. Also lending their corporate sup-port are B-4 Farms, Bar G Feedyard, Group IV Electric Cooperatives, Laredo Petroleum, Lone Star Beef and ProPetro.

OléT here are few things in this world that I love more than

Mexican food. It’s cheesy, it’s spicy, it goes great with margaritas, and at Pablo’s Mexican Kitchen in Rich-

mond, Texas, it’s made with Certified Hereford Beef. When I arrived for lunch on a recent Wednesday, the

restaurant was jumping. Lively music was playing, the dining room and bar area were almost full, and the hosts were having an impromptu dance competition in the entryway.

The restaurant is split into three sections making it a very versatile place. There’s a large bar with plenty of cocktail seat-ing and televisions for sports, the main dining area is comfort-able and family friendly, and there’s an intimate private party room for groups that need a bit more space.

My server Vanessa was all smiles and very helpful in nav-igating the menu which offered everything you would expect from a Mexican restaurant and many things that you might not. In fact, almost half the dishes were seafood based and al-though I was tempted, I remained focused on the heartier fare.

Vanessa strongly recommended that I try the fajitas made with Certified Hereford skirt steak sourced from a ranch just west of the Houston area in Brenham, Texas. When I asked why Pablo’s had chosen to feature Certified Hereford beef she told me that the owners always tried to use high quality, local ingredients and that the local Hereford beef was the best that they had found.

After a short wait, the fajitas arrived, and they looked in-credible. While the thin slices of steak, caramelized onion, and bell pepper sizzled away on a smoking hot platter, my at-tention was drawn to the impressive display of accoutrements. I’m no stranger to the usual side plate of cheddar, pico de gal-lo, sour cream, and lime, but this arrangement was something special. There were no tiny plastic cups of cheese and brown guacamole here. No, this was an overflowing cornucopia of freshness.

The seasoning on the beef was just the right balance of

salt, pepper, garlic, and citrus and although the meat had been chargrilled to well-done, it was still extreme-ly juicy and melted in my mouth. Combined with all the fresh garnishes and wrapped in a steaming, house-made flour tortilla, this was one of the best fajitas I had ever eaten.

As expected, my entree came with a side of rice and beans. Unfortunately, the rice was disappointing. The flavors were flat and there were large, unwelcome chunks of carrot mixed in. It wasn’t inedible, but it re-ally wasn’t good. The beans, on the other hand, were a standout. Slowly cooked with tomato, jalapeno, onion, and smokey shredded pork, the resulting stew perfect-ly accented the fajitas but could have been enjoyed just as well on its own.

Many of you might be wondering how Pablo’s is handling the Covid-19 thing. First, they have designat-ed four parking spots right in the front of the restau-rant for pick-up orders. This offers great convenience if you’re not feeling comfortable dining inside the restau-rant. The menu is posted on their website (https://pablosmexkitchen.com/menus/) and you can either order online or phone it in. Then just pull up to one of the four spots, call to let them know you’ve arrived, and they run your order right out to you. You can even get a to-go margarita to wash it all down with! ★
