It’s a GREAT day to be a Lion!!
Spring has sprung and summer is right around
the corner which means our Lion Year is coming
to an end. In these last two months there is still
much to do! Most of you have already voted for
your Officers for next year and others are doing so
within the next few weeks. Please make sure you
submit your PU-101 to Lions Clubs International.
This information is vital for not only Internation-
al, but to the leadership of our district.
This spring has been devastating to many areas due to the
floods and tornados. Our Lions Clubs International Founda-
tion has been right there with amazing financial support.
Because of this, we have an awesome opportunity to reach
beyond our communities and offer additional financial sup-
port! If you have not made an annual donation to our Interna-
tional Foundation, please do so within the next few weeks and
if you have already made your donation, please consider an
additional donation! Our International Foundation offers so
much support worldwide, thanks to the generosity of all our
clubs! As a District, we have benefited from our International
Foundation’s generosity for many programs and emergency
support. If you have any questions please feel free to give me a
buzz or shoot me an email. Thank you in advance for your
generous support of Lions Clubs International Foundation!!
The Lions Clubs International Convention is right around the
corner and your help is still needed! If you have not had a
chance to volunteer or register please do so as soon as you can.
Make sure you mark your calendars to join us in marching in
the parade! We are pleased to announce that through the
generosity of the Naperville Noon Lions Club, our District will
have the Naperville High School Marching
Band leading our District!! It’s an amazing
experience to be a part of an International
parade!
Well, I think that is all for now . . . thank
you for being the change in this world and
never stop looking for those new mountains
to climb!!
Blessings . . .

Good advice for new,
as well as, long-time Lions!!
Planning Ahead!
The first step in a successful 1-J Convention is to "hire the hall". In 2018, we
will be at the Chicago Marriott Naperville, 1801 Naper Boulevard, Naperville,
Illinois.
District Governor-Elect Lion John Hilliard has signed the contract for the event
that is so important to his year as Governor. A convenient location with nice
amenities, the Marriott staff stands ready to welcome the Lions of 1-J on the
6th, 7th, and 8th of April, 2018.
A note to in-coming Presidents and Secretaries for the new Lion Year: As you
prepare your yearly calendar, be sure to include those dates.
Agenda information will be shared as the year progresses.

Raceway Woods 5K Recap
From the Elgin Lions Tale Newsletter
Elgin Lion Ed Bates managed to make this a very successful start to a great
fundraiser.
Approximately 110 runners/walkers showed up on a chilly
Saturday morning to test their speed and endurance. The race course is quite
challenging due to its hilly nature. Altogether, it was a good test of running (or
walking) ability.
Lion Ed must share some of the spotlight for the event with the Dundee
Township Lions Club. The two clubs worked well together, and it is possible
that this will be an annual affair.
May 2017 - 3 - 1-J Journal
Time For Renewal!
May has begun. In view of all of the rain we had last month
(April showers) we should be seeing all kinds of May flowers
everywhere. Regardless, the trees are filling out with leaves,
there are a lot of springtime flowers blooming all over. These
are all signs of Spring; a time of renewal.
This could also be a time of renewal for Lions Clubs through-
out our District. How about your club? Even though there are
only two months left in the current Lion Year, your club could
begin the renewal process now. Look ahead to the next Lion
Year. Begin planning that renewal now. Don’t wait until July
1st.
What do I mean by “renewal”? Take a new look at your club.
Are your meetings interesting or boring? If boring, don’t be
surprised if attendance is lower than you would like. If you
have guest speakers, invite some that are either “fun” or
“interesting”. Make sure your members know about them.
There is a good chance that your attendance will start to
increase. If you have “booked” a really great speaker, make
sure to let your community know and invite them to attend.
Some of them might become members.
Next, take a look at what your club is doing. This could
include writing checks to worthwhile organizations, running
fundraisers and conducting service projects. Does your
community know about those checks? If no; why not? In order
for any fundraiser to be a success, people have to know about
it.
Does your community know about any service projects that
you have done or are planning to do? Do you perform any
service projects at all? I mean rolling up your sleeves and
possibly getting your hands dirty.
A time for renewal can also mean a time to refresh. Can some
of the things you do be done differently? Take a “fresh” look at
all of them.
Another way to refresh would be to do something you haven’t
done before. Trying something new can be scary. With careful
planning the word “scary” can disappear. Something new
removes doing the “same old” stuff. It can refresh your
members and their attitudes toward your club. It’s worth a try.
Need some ideas, contact me.

From your GLT Leader . . .
Only two months to go in the Lion Year. At this time, the District
has inducted 161 new members, but has lost 188 members.
While we are a negative 27 members, we are a lot closer to a posi-
tive number than we were a few months ago.
Thank you to all who have found new hands to help with our
work and a plea to every Lion to use the next two months to “Just
Ask One.”
District 1-J will be holding Officer Training in July. Any officer
who did not attend the program at the District Convention
should plan on attending the July program. International re-
quires an Officer Training Program be held within 1 month
following the International Convention. All officers, old and new,
should attend the Officer Training Program.
Also in July, we plan on holding a training program for Zone
Chairs. Anyone interested in the position of Zone Chair, whether
interested in becoming a ZC or just interested in what the posi-
tion entails, is welcome to attend.
More information on both of these programs will be available
closer to the event.
Thank you all for all that you have done this Lion Year and let’s
start making plans for the upcoming year.

Resolutions To Be Voted On at the
IL State Convention
There are three resolutions to be voted on at the IL State
Lions Convention in Springfield May 19-21.
Resolution #1 is a Supremacy Clause which clarifies the
hierarchy of the documents recognized and adopted within
the Lions of Illinois, thereby eliminating any future conflict
or contradiction that might have risen between them.
Resolution #2 is a Special Meeting Notification which
would clarify the time frame to be followed in calling for,
and giving notice, of a Special Meeting of the Council of
Governors.
Resolution #3 is in reference to allowing Teleconference
Meetings to be conducted by the Council of Governors.
Access the Resolutions in the April 2017 issue of the State
Lions Magazine — Lion Bonnie sends them out monthly.
Dining in the Dark
Contributed by Sandwich Lions Club Pres. PDG Lion Ed Carter
A while back Lions Ron and AnnWigton and myself attended a
"Dining in the Dark" event along with some folks from the Lions
of Illinois Foundation.
We had to eat blindfolded. It was an interesting experience,
especially chasing the green beans, chicken and mashed
potatoes around the plate.
We were allowed breaks between courses featuring soup, salad,
and the entree. It was an opportunity for us to briefly experience
what many folks live with each and every day.
Need A Program For Your Club?
Naperville Noon Lions Club has had such an array of speakers at
its meetings that we thought we should pass them along. This
club meets weekly, and therefore, needs LOTS of programs over
the Lion Year. Here are some in the last two months:
Cecilia Najera, Director of DuPage County Legal Aid
John Miller & Kioko Czech, American Cancer Society,
talked about its programs
Mike Wasilewski, Crisis Negotiator, Naperville Police
Department
Lavonne Kopca, Director of Student Disability
Downers Grove Lion George Swimmer on “Railroad Colli-
sions, A Deadly Story of Mismanaged Risk”
Dan Jurjovec of Naperville Responds for Veterans
Liz Spencer from NCTV 17
Ben Pohl, information on distracted driving
Jan Roehll from the Conservation Foundation
Attending the WCC Lions Club Charter Night were: (Front Row l to
r) Past International Director Lion Jón Bjarni Thorsteinsson, LCI 2nd
International Vice President Lion Gudrim Bjort Yadottir from Ice-
land, LCI Pres. Lion Bob Corlew, WCC Pres. Dr. Christine J. Sobek,
LCI 3rd Vice President Jung-Yul Choi from Korea, and District 1-J
Governor Lion Maria Andrews. Back Row Officers of the new Wau-
bonsee Community College Lions Club.
This group of Batavia Lions posed with LCI Pres. Lion Bob
Corlew. A group of Elmhurst Lions were there, also.
The ladies get together to talk Lionism!
Lion Susan Galvez, District 1-J 1st Vice
Governor (r) and 2nd International
Vice President Lion Gudrim Bjort
Yadottir from Iceland. If I have my
facts right, they will be in charge in
District 1-J and Lions Clubs Interna-
tional the same year.
All in all, it was an inspiring evening — new Lions in the District,
Lions Clubs International Officers, and District 1-J Lions.
LCI Pres. Lion Bob Corlew told us there are 50,000 Lions in
China and they are the only service club in China after the
Chinese saw results of the work Lions do. He gave a number of
examples of “Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion,” particularly in
our four Centennial Service Challenge areas (Engaging Our
Youth, Protecting Our Environment, Sharing the Vision,
Relieving the Hunger).
Words spoken by LCI Pres. Lion Bob Corlew that I wrote down in
my notes from the evening: “Earn the privilege of calling your-
self a Lion.” Good advice for new, as well as long-time Lions!

More Wit & Wisdom . . .
From the Elgin Lions Club Lions Tale: A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like. “We
used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We
picked wild raspberries in the woods.” The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last she said, “I sure wish I’d gotten
to know you sooner!”

Youth Engagement is a Cornerstone
Of Our Service
Excerpted from the message of Lion Bob Corlew, Your Lions Clubs International President
Youth engagement is the cornerstone of our Lions’ service framework. Reach out to a local high school or youth organization.
Encourage young people to volunteer with your club. Make sure to give them a voice and recognize their hard work and achievements.
Young people can be more than just volunt eers —they ca n be our partners in service.
When you engage youth in service, you are investing in the future of your club and your community.

By now, the District Conventions are over and we are all pre-
paring for the State Convention in Springfield, IL at the
Abraham Lincoln Hotel.
As we do every year, your Foundation will be there with infor-
mation tables to answer questions. Also, on Sunday will be the
annual Foundation Breakfast where you will learn what exciting
things have happened this year. And please do not forget the
PARADE OF PLEDGES. This is where all the clubs bring checks
and pledge cards for the various programs of your Foundation,
like Camp Lions, Low Vision, Bus Screening, & pledges for Sus-
taining Supporters (both club and individual), Birdies, and more.
So, see you that weekend.
Our camps are getting ready for a strong and successful summer
program. If you have never done so, make plans to visit and see
the campers in action. If you come, they will put on a show for
you. We are still accepting donations for this camp season. For
$525, you can sponsor a camper and make his or her life a little
better for the camp experience.
This has been a great year for your Foundation. Many thousands
of eye glasses to recycle. The Endowment Fund continuing to
grow as we approach eleven million. Campers at our camps in
another very successful year. Reopening the door of communica-
tion with the Eye Research Institute, Leader Dog, and Hadley
School. Our future is bright.
Don’t forget to volunteer for the Foundation display at the Lions
Clubs International Convention in Chicago. All three busses will
be there and this is a great opportunity to help us show the world
just what a great Foundation we have here in Illinois. Contact the
Foundation office for more information.
See you at State,
