PERSONNEL CHANGES

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS: Charles Shattuck, Associate Professor, has returnedfrom leave at the Vassar experimental theatre. Patricia Mcllrath is back atthe U. of I. from one year's leave at Stanford.

PURDUE UNIVERSITY: The following instructors have been added to PurdueUniversity's speech staff: Thomas L. Dahle, from University of Wisconsin;Richard L. Dean, Louisiana State University; Robert F/Duffey, University ofWisconsin; Allen D. Fletcher, Stanford University. Dr. Theodore D. Hanleyhas been newly appointed to the staff of the Speech department. In additionto his teaching duties, he will supervise research on voice communicationsbeing conducted by the United States Navy. Dr. Hanley was associated withthis research at the State University of Iowa.

OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY: Dr. John Black, former Chairman of the SpeechDeparment of Kenyon College has been made Director of Speech Science. Dr.Ruth B. Irwin has been appointed Instructor in Speech and Hearing. Shewas formerly with the Department of Education of the state of Ohio.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE: Miss Margaret Wood, former-ly of the University of Iowa, has been appointed to the staff of the Speechdepartment. She will teach in the area of public speaking and assist in theforensics program. Mr. Lewis McFarland, also from the University of Iowa,has been made production supervisor. He will teach drama and interpreta-tion.

IOWA STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE: Dr. Mamie Jo Jones has joined the speechcorrection staff of I.S.T.C. and is in charge of the speech clinic. Dr. Joneshas her Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Mr. Oliver Skalbeck (M.A.Iowa), formerly of the Department of Speech at Southeast Missouri State Col-lege, has also joined the speech correction staff. Mr. James C. Shanks, fromthe University of Denver, is another new member of the speech staff at T. C.

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA: Frank M. Lassman, from the University ofCalifornia, has been appointed Assistant Professor of Speech Pathology. Don-ald K. Smith has left the University of Wisconsin to accept an appointmentas Lecturer in Speech. Donald M. Brieland, formerly of Grinnell College,has become an Associate Professor of Speech.

MICHIGAN STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE: Frederick Alexander, formerly on thestaff of North Central College, has joined the staff of the Department ofSpeech, Dramatics, and Radio Education. Harold Niven, coming from Stan-ford University, has accepted the position of Technical Director.

MISSOURI UNIVERSITY: J. P. Ryan, formerly head of the Department ofSpeech at Grinnell College, is now at University of Missouri. Bower Aly is onleave of absence at Louisiana State University where he is taking the place of

NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY: Clarence T. Simon, Professor of the Psy-chology of Speech has returned after a two year leave of absence during whichtime he was a member of the faculty of the University of Hawaii.

STEPHENS COLLEGE: Joseph T. Logsdon has been appointed to the staff ofthe Communications Division. Mr. Logsdon came from Bemidjii State Col-lege, Minnesota.

FORENSIC ACTIVITIES

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH DAKOTA: An invitational tournament in Discussionfor Colleges was held November 4 and 5. This year a Clinic in Declamationand a Discussion Conference was added for high school speech students.

UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA: The high school Debate and Discussion Institutewas held November 12. The Annual Debate and Discussion Conference willbe February 24-25.

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA: Four speech contests have been scheduled:King Verse Reading, King Extempore, Merrifield Oratorical and the Stock-well Oratorical.

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN: Activity clinics for high school students in thefields of debate, theatre, and radio were scheduled for October 15, October29, and December 3.

ILLINOIS STATE NORMAL UNIVERSITY: The Eighteenth Annual InvitationalDebate Tournament is planned for January 13-14.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE: Thirty-five to forty studentsparticipated in the Annual Strawn Discussion Contest in October. The finalsare to be held in November. This activity is sponsored by the local Pi KappaDelta chapter and the Kiwanis Club.

GRINNELL COLLEGE: Grinnell will be host to the Mid-West ConferenceDebate and Discussion Meeting November 18-19.

WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY: The proposition, "Resolved, That the BritishEmpire is Decadent" will be supported on the affirmative by Washingtondebaters, November 18, against Oxford University.

WAUKEGAN TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL. Plans are made for numerous debatetournaments with North Shore schools this year. A series of weekly broad-casts on WKRS FM have been arranged including "Literature Unlimited,""Highschool Highlights," "Adventure Land Express," (a children's program)and "It Happens Once a Year," (the observance of special events) . "Oper-ations of the Speech and Hearing Clinic" will be presented to a monthlyP.T.A. meeting.

PURDUE UNIVERSITY: The Indiana High School Debater's Conference willbe held December 2-3.

STATE SPEECH ASSOCIATION MEETINGS

The Annual Illinois Speech Association Conference was held October 21-22 at Urbana.

The association meetings of South Dakota were held during the SouthDakota Educational Association Convention which met in October this year.

The Ohio Speech Association Convention was held in Columbus October 8.The Indiana Speech Association Convention was held October 27 in In-

dianapolis. Dr. Loren Reid of Missouri was the principal speaker.The Indiana-Michigan Regional Tau Kappa Alpha Conference will be

held at Purdue University November 17-18. It will be directed by Dr. N. B.Beck of the Purdue Speech Staff.

The Speech Section of the Iowa State Education Association held its an-nual meeting November 3, in Des Moines, Iowa. The guest speaker was Dr.James McBurney, President of the Speech Association of America and Deanof the School of Speech at Northwestrn University.

The Speech Association of Missouri met in St. Louis, November 4. Pro-fessor Karl F. Robinson of Northwestern University was the principal out ofstate speaker. In the St. Louis area, Rev. Robert Johnston, S.J., Head of theDepartment of Speech at St. Louis University, and Professor Donald C. Bry-ant, Director of Speech at Washington University, are organizing a localassociation of speech teachers.

The Kansas Speech Teachers Association held its annual fall meetings onNovember 3rd a n d 4th.S p e e c h "Round Tables"met under the leadershipof the following chairmen:Mrs. K e v i n Fitzgerald,Margaret L. Anderson, andHarriet Ketchum. The an-nual High School DebateInstitutes w e r e h e l d atKansas University, October14 and 15; Dodge City Jun-ior College, October 21;Wichita University, October22; and, Hays State Col-lege, October 29. The in-stitutes featured additionalspeech activities (as well asdebate,) including drama-tics, oratory, and extemporespeaking. These additionalactivities were included toaid h i g h school teachersand students in preparingfor the coming Spring Fes-tivals which will be heldin Kansas.

on November 4. Professor Karl R. Wallace of the University of Illinois ad-dressed a joint session on the subject "The Basic Requirement and Methodsof the High School Teacher of Speech." In one sectional meeting followingthe main address, Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin de-bated the high school question; and in the other, five brief papers were pre-sented on the general topic "The High School Forensice Program."
