Dear Parents, Carers and Staff

SWAN EXTENDED SCHOOL HUB PROGRAM A transition booklet to Swan View Senior High School has been produced by the Project Manager, Jacqueline Ball. It is a colourful and beautifully presented description of the process in which we engage to transition our students to our local high school. The special programs are clearly explained and important dates set out for your information.

ACE PROGRAM SVSHS Achieving Curriculum Excellence Program invites students who have achieved high scores in educational assessments and who consistently demonstrate academic aptitude in the classroom to join extension learning activities. These students also demonstrate excellent standards of attitudes, behaviour and effort. Our students in Years 5, 6 and 7 have been invited to the Showcase Assembly at the Swan View Senior High School on Friday 6 June. The future ACE students will be presented with their ACE Certificate and pencil case.

READING YOU adding 10 minutes a day to a child‟s reading makes a big difference over the year. The more minutes children read per day, the more fluent their reading becomes. From 5 minutes to 15 minutes per night there is around a 200% increase in exposure to words over a one year period. Reading more means a child has improved performance in general knowledge, vocabulary, comprehension, verbal fluency and spelling. DISNEY ON ICE We have been extremely fortunate in securing tickets to the Disney on Ice at Perth Arena which was held on Saturday 31 May. The recipients were a group of children who have attended school 100%

of the time, have an excellent attitude toward learning, are respectful of adults and students, comply with school rules and whose parents are supportive of the school.

PARENT ENGAGEMENT DAY We have planned a series of days to invite parents to be a part of school life. Our first „Parent Engagement Day‟ will be held on Monday 9 June. This day is for parents of Years 2 and 3 students. For those who accept the invitation we will have a sausage sizzle for lunch at 1:00pm and then the parents will join their children in A5 and take part in some curriculum activities.

WAPPA CONFERENCE I will be away next week from Wednesday to Friday at the WA Principals Conference. If there are any pressing matters you need to discuss you can contact either of the Deputy Principals for help. Cheers Marg

competition in the library.

For many children, especially in years 4-7, it is their

responsibility to borrow Library resources and have them back on time. Could you please remind

your children of this.

Three children in Year 6/7 (A7), Justin, Matthew and Jason have devised a good way to remember

the order of the planets...MY VERY EAGER MUM JUST SAT UPON NEPTUNE. Well done boys!

Sports News

Last Friday, most of our year 6 and 7 students participated in the first interschool sports competition for the term. Greenmount came to our school and we played against them in AFL, netball, soccer and volleyball.

Our soccer team had a fantastic win, beating Greenmount 8-1. Our goal scorers were Raymond Evans 3, Bevan Barnes 3, Cameron Beagley 1 and Aryan Sodhi 1. It was a great all-round team performance with our 4 goal scorers combining extremely well in attack. Our goal keepers Ethan Toki, Caleb Butler and Ezra Grant were also rock-solid in defence. It was an effort all the players can be very proud of. Despite missing several players, our football team also had a crushing victory, beating Greenmount by 99 points.

Our netball teams had mixed success with the year 7 team losing and the year 6 team winning.

The volleyball competition was slightly one-sided, with Greenmount winning each of the six games played

Our next competition day will be against Midvale away next Friday 13th June.

Welcome back to all our members to school banking. Our banking theme for 2014 is an underwater theme. We have some fantastic new rewards. Start banking today or if you would like to join come in and see us. Located in C block wet area Thursday mornings 8.15 to 8.45. For the Early Learning Centre we now have a drop box available, and banking is held on Wednesday mornings. If you have any problems feel free to contact us via the front office.

Again the year 7 students are raising funds for their year 7 camp to Rottnest by running sausage sizzles at school through the canteen three times a term on a Monday when the canteen is normally closed. If you are able to assist with preparations on a Monday even if it is only for an hour or so would you please contact Amanda Kerrison on 0438911138. You do not have to be a parent of a year 7 student to give a helping hand. Dates for the next sausage sizzles are June 9

th and the June 30

We still need your donations! We will be starting the immense task of creating our signs soon, plus we have taken on another project to create four large collages under the guidance of our Artist in Residence, Rachel Riggs, celebrating our school community, friendship and respect. It is a very excit-ing and creative time although a little stressful as we will need many more donations to be able to fin-ish these projects. So please keep collecting all types of lids, pegs, pens, old textas, keys, DVD‟s/CD‟s, broken jewellery, small toys and anything that fits the bill. All of your donations will be gratefully accepted and give our students a chance to share their creativity contributing to a perma-nent artwork for the school which will be admired for years to come. Can you please assist your children in obtaining sponsors to help this very worthy cause. A good source of sponsorship is by taking forms to your workplace or to mem-bers of your family. Parent Engagement Day Years 2/3, 4/5 and 6/7

Tomorrow is the last day you can nominate yourself and your child to attend our Year 2/3 Parent Engagement afternoon on Monday 9th June from 12.50-2.50pm. It is a great opportunity to become involved in your child‟s learning. You will also be able to purchase raffle tickets for the fantastic food hamper. Tickets are 50c for the smaller hamper or $1.00 for the larger hamper.
