THE 14TH AND CHESTNUT COMMUNITY CENTER'S MISSION IS TO BE A PARTNER WITH AND PROVIDE MINISTRY TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD AROUND THE CENTER IN

ORDER TO ASSIST WITH A VARIETY OF SPIRITUAL, PHYSICAL, AND EDUCATIONAL NEEDS.

Did you know?

Do you know what the most important happenings are in August?

Answer Page 5.

End of Summer

While most of the time you hear lots of laughter and giggles and see smiles all around, the last day of the summer becomes a very sad day. You hear some crying, see some tears, and embrace lots of hugs as we end the summer program. The staff and kids have become one giant family, and we are sad to part. Some stu-dents going back to the other parent for the school year, and some staff leaving to go to college or on to new adventures. Ei-ther way, we try to remember all of the wonderful times we shared over the 10 weeks. We try to make each other giggle at the silly things that occurred. And we try to encourage each and every one that this next year is still another important year.

Summer will come again and we will hope to meet then.

NEWS AROUND THE CORNER Page 2

Community Arts ISU’s Community Arts program put together a wonder-

ful program in order to display all the amazing projects

our kids worked so hard at creating all summer long.

The program was held at Memorial United Methodist

Church at the end of July. The program was donated to

the center this summer in honor of Colton Murray.

Colton was a little boy who wanted to help out his

community and encourage others to be the best that

they could be, and that’s what we strive for here every

day. We are grateful for this donation and the oppor-

tunity to encourage our kids to express themselves and

be the best that they can be.

Oh the Places We Went!! Our last field trips were a blast! We took the kids

skating at Wigwam Skating. They had a blast playing

games and having fun with friends. We also took

them bowling at Vigo Bowl. Many of them were

learning how to bowl while others became a little

more competitive with each other. We also did two

split field trips. The Kindergarten through 2nd grade

students went to the Terre Haute Children’s Muse-

um and had fun exploring and playing with the differ-

ent exhibits while the 3rd Grade and older students

had fun swimming at the aquatic center. Then the

Kindergarten through 5th grade students had fun at

the Bouncin Barn while the 6th grade and older students visited the Exotic Feline Rescue Center. We ended

the summer with going to Shakamak State Park and exploring and swimming. The kids had a wonderful time

and were sad to come home. The kids had a blast on each field trip and were always excited to hear where

we would be going. We appreciate everyone who helped make these field trips possible!

Back to School Blast We ended the summer with a wonderful night with

family! We invited all of the families to join us on the

last Thursday for dinner and then the kids put togeth-

er a wonderful program for their parents! There was

lots of dancing, some skits, some painting, and lots of

talents. Each group put together a piece to perform

along with the Drama Club. They wanted to praise

God and celebrate with their families the awesome

summer they had. And then at the end of the night,

they received their backpacks and their brand new

tennis shoes! Everyone had a wonderful time and the

program went very smoothly.

Golf Outing We had a wonderful time at our Golf Outing during August. We want to thank all of the teams who came out to participate, and we also want to thank Director Tim Jarvis for putting the entire event together. It was a successful fundraiser despite the rain! Thank you everyone

for your continued support.

Donaghy Day The day before classes start at ISU is a service day every year called Donaghy Day. It is a day that the campus encourages students to get involved with the community partners in the area. This year we had 10 students come to 14th and Chestnut to help clean, move supplies, and organize the building. We appreciate all of the hard work and effort the stu-dents put in to help us recover the building after a

very eventful summer.

Meet Mark! Meet Mark Metheny our newest director. He is a Certified Financial Planner at Edward Jones. He graduat-ed from South Vigo High School and Indiana State University. His wife is Gina Metheny and they have two beautiful children Nora who is 3 and Tate who was born on August 19th. Mark enjoys golfing, and cheering for the Colts and Cardi-nals. We are glad to have Mark as a part of our board and look forward to all of

the great ideas and advice he brings!

Save the Date! On December 15th, we will be hosting our final fundraiser for 2018.. It is

a Christmas Benefit Concert featuring Redhead Express and Graybeard. We are so excited to have them back for another entertaining night out. Keep watching for more details about times and ticket information. We also have the Gifts from the Heart Banquet Date! It will be Thursday April 11th. So mark your calendars and save the date for another wonderful meal, silent auctions, and night of hearing about the

awesome events that occurred in 2018!

Did you Know?????

Did you know that August is the time that we interview and hire new staff for the school year? Heather and Bill met with over 20 different students who want to work at the center through Federal

Work Study, Sycamore Community Works Program, or for internship hours for class this year.

When you shop at smile.amazon.com, you’ll find the exact same low prices, vast selection and conven-ient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to your favorite charitable organization. If you already have an amazon.com account or have amazon prime, this all is the same at smile.amazon. When you first go to the website, you will be asked to select your charitable organization, which you can find through the search bar. Once you have selected 14th and Chestnut Community Center (please use the top choice offered), every time that you place an order, a portion of your purchase will be given to the Center. The only differ-ence from any amazon order is that you sign in to smile.amazon.com. Several small donations can add

up to something large to continue the ministry of the Center.

Kroger Number Did you know that when you gro-cery shop you can help the center out? 14th & Chestnut Community Center are enrolled in the Krog-er Community Rewards Pro-gram. The center will receive a donation each month based on a percentage of sales by our enrolled members. Please go online to krogercommunityrewards.com and register your Kroger Plus card with our organization. Kroger has assigned the center with the number BP497! This is a new number. Cus-tomers who have previously signed up should not have to change their number. Just make sure to

check the bottom of your receipts and make sure a donation is being made to the center!

Did You Know????

On December 15th, we will have our last fundraiser for the year. Graybeard and Redhead Express will

be having a Christmas Benefit Concert for us!

Candy, Coats and More! The Center is in need of brand new winter coats and lots and lots of candy. October is another busy month for the center. Our Middle School and High school kids always par-ticipate in the ISU Homecoming Parade. They take the time to come up with an idea and decorate an trailer for the pa-rade and then they walk/ride in the parade and pass out can-dy. We also have our Harvest Happenings party which is our safe alternative to Trick or Treating. The kids dress up and have fun playing games and earning prizes and candy! For both of these events, we need lots of candy. We are asking for donations of any candy for these events. We also gear up for winter during the month of October by passing out brand new winter coats to each of our kids! Many of our families cannot afford the cost of a new coat, and so we try to cover that to make sure our kids stay warm. We also ac-cept donations of blankets, hats, scarves, and gloves to help keep the kids warm as well! We even pass these items out to the food pantry participants as well. Blankets do not need to be new, they can be

gently used. But we do ask that hats, gloves, and scarves be new or handmade.

THE NEED IS THERE – BE A CHRISTMAS SPONSOR

BY: JEANIE EDINBURGH

14th & Chestnut Community Center is in its nineteenth year of services to inner-city chil-

dren in Terre Haute, Indiana. In an era of economic recession, decreased giving, and failing non-

profit organizations, the 14th & Chestnut Community Center remains faithful to its mission. Dur-

ing the eighteen years many young lives has been touched, fed, tutored, clothed, and improved by

the services and mentoring provided by the 14th & Chestnut Community Center.

For over a decade, the 14th & Chestnut Community Center has successfully relied upon

community foundations, businesses, churches, and individuals to assist us in sustaining this program

and to purchase food, school supplies, and tennis shoes for our after school and summer pro-

grams, clothing for our clothes closet, winter coats to make sure our children go to school warm.

We have also relied upon them for Thanksgiving and Christmas food for our holiday baskets, as

well as toys and new clothing for the children at Christmas

Now we are entering into our Holiday Season, and we are coming to you once again. So

many lives in our community depend on the services provided by the 14th & Chestnut Community

Center. I personally go into the homes of so many of our children, I see how they live, and I talk

to the parent about their basic needs. I am coming to you because without your help, many of our

children will go without a Christmas, as many have in the past. Each year 14th & Chestnut Com-

munity Center spends a great deal of time searching for businesses, churches, and even individuals

to sponsor one or more of our families for Christmas.

The families of the 14th & Chestnut Community Center consist of a family of three or

more. Without your love and support many may go without a Christmas this year. As a child

coming up, I was in one of these households, and it breaks my heart to see that so many of our

families live even worse than I did as a child. I would often hear adults say, “It takes a whole neigh-

borhood to raise a child”, in today’s economy I have to say, it no longer takes a neighborhood, in-

stead it takes the entire community to raise a child.

With the economy in the state it is currently in, so many parents have lost their jobs,

therefore the security of knowing that their basic needs are being taken care of are gone. Many

that donated to the center, now find themselves in the spot of needing help themselves. The 14th

& Chestnut Community Center is depending upon YOU to assist us in making sure our families

have a Happy Holiday Season. Please feel free to call me at the 14th & Chestnut Community Cen-

ter @ 812-232-3126, I will be happy to answer any questions you may have, and give you the

names and information regarding a family, or families that need your help. Please join us in bring-

ing smiles to our families this Christmas Holiday Season.

In His Service
