Club or Judoka Profile
A Judo Club or Judoka profile is something I’d like to make a regular feature of this newsletter. Contact Chris Crook if you would like to see a profile done on your club or of
a particular judoka/volunteer in our future publications, or if you just have a bit of club
news that you would like to share with the rest of the county. For this addition I’ve a small
article on one of our younger judokas Ebonnie Bridges from the Budokan in Frimley.
Ebonnie has been training in judo since she was just four years old. Her first grading was
when she was six on the Kano club. She entered her first competition
aged five which was the London International where she came 5th.
Ebonnie also did this event the following year and again came 5th just missing out on the medals.
Ebonnie reached 5th Kano which was converted over to 1st mon when
she turned 8 in March 2007. She then started competing at normal levels
and has had some very good results for one so young. Her recent results
are below:
April 22nd 2007 Ford Age Banded Silver
June 3rd 2007 Salisbury Orange & Under Gold
June 9th 2007 NHC Red & Yellow Gold

Ladies Gradings
Recreational female players looking to grade should fill out the “Application for
Information” in the newsletter. The county will then contact you and endeavour to arrange
a special grading when most players are available. Thank you to those people that have
already submitted forms.
Surrey Squad information The senior men’s squad train together at Yamabushi Kingston on the first Monday of every month from 8pm to 10pm.
Any enquiries should be directed to Jo Brand on 07976 061449 or at [email protected]
Lloyd Nicholls, and Simon Carlo are the Male Squad managers.
Kat McDonald, and Jo Brand are the Female Squad managers.
Note that Peter Swettenham has had to withdraw from being one of our county squad managers due to other work/judo commitments. He will still remain very active in the judo word most notably
through his club and referring duties.

* Sorry if I’ve missed anyone’s name out from a competition. A lot of the results are not
on the BJA websites so I’ve been searching club websites instead.
John Bushnell – Retirement from Surrey County Judo
Unfortunately I recently received the following note from John:
“Just to let you know that following my move to Ipswich, I have
decided, mainly for personal reasons to resign from the Surrey
County Committee.
I have enjoyed my time on the committee and it has been great
seeing Surrey County become one of the forefront and best
recognised Counties in the BJA. In particular I will miss the many friends that I have made and especially my involvement in the
Millennium League which is one of the best events held in the
Southern Area.”
We will all greatly miss John. Many of us have known and enjoyed his friendship for
more years that we care to remember.
The County will also miss John, his knowledge, organisational skills, and all the hard
work he put into helping to make Surrey the success it is. The door will always be open if
he should ever find himself back down this way.
Thank you John, best wishes and good luck in all you do in the future.
Old Advert for Judo Mats
Tony Wheeler (Parish & Sutton JCs) recently let me know that he is still receiving many
enquiries about his judo mats which were put up for sale and sold in 2004. It seems that
Google searches are finding the old archived copy of the news article from our county
website. Therefore, if your club has something judo related that needs to be sold,
advertise it on our website and people will definitely see it ! www.surreyjudo.org.uk
Donyngs Recreation Centre – new county venue for judo competitions
Note that county judo events have now moved from Westcroft LC in Carshalton to Donyngs Recreation Centre in Redhill. The map below shows the new location just off
the Hatchlands Road and Station Road roundabout :
Usual Plea for Volunteers to put out the mats !
Please remember that before every county judo event the mats
have to be laid out at Donyngs. It is always the same old
(yes some of us are getting on a bit) people
helping out. It only takes about an hour
when there are many people helping.
Always check out the Surrey website for
details of when the operation takes place the night before
a competition.
Dorking Judo Club – Games & Awards evening
At the end of 2007 Dorking Judo Club became one of the first club in the Southern Area
to be awarded the renewal of its Sport England Clubmark. At the club’s Christmas games
night Karen French, British Judo Association Southern Area Development Officer
presented Richard Anderson, with the renewal certificate for the Bronze Award. Dorking
Judo Club was one of the first judo clubs in England to receive the prestigious Clubmark
in 2006. The Clubmark is a national standard, recognising that a sports club is safe,
efficient and child-friendly.
The games night was a busy night for presentations as Adrian White CBE, former High
Sheriff of Surrey and founder of Biwater and the Denbies Wine Estate, presented the club
with a plaque recognising recent funding from the Lottery. The club was given £6,700 by
the Lottery Awards for All programme to encourage more teenagers and women to take
up judo. This grant has allowed the Club to enhance training and coaching, improve its
promotional materials, buy new equipment, invite guest coaches, run ‘taster sessions’ for
juniors and young people and hold self defence classes for women of all ages.
Dorking Judo Club also presented a giant cheque for nearly £600
to Gay Baker, Director for FamilyLine. Each year the DJC
‘adopts a charity’ and raises money throughout the year by giving
displays at local summer events, tombolas, and raffles. This year
the juniors helped considerably by making ‘coin cubes’ and filling
them with their spare change. FamilyLine is a local Dorking charity that has trained telephone-councillors to provide advice
and support to families in need of help.
Table Officials / Referees
MILLENNIUM LEAGUE
PARENTS CAN WIN POINTS FOR THEIR CLUB !
Points are awarded to NEW VOLUNTEER OFFICIALS who assist at the
League events for Table work, Time Keeping, Scoring or Medical (if
qualified). This bonus only applies to those who officiate and are not already
qualified competition officials. The points to be awarded are as follows.
Volunteer officiating at any League events = 5 bonus points
Volunteer officiating at all 4 League events = additional bonus 5 points
Maximum number of volunteers per club at any event = 2
Maximum number of bonus points available to any one club = 50 points
In order to claim these points each volunteer must report to the control table
on the day of the event, prior to the tournament commencing.
Any queries regarding the above please contact either Graham Beagley,
Sheila Hearsey, or Andrew Scarsbrook.
Have you ever thought about
becoming a Table Official or a
Referee for the County ?
If you would like more details
please talk to one of the BJA
committee members, or fill out the
form below. The most important
attribute to have is plenty of
enthusiasm !
Note that the county is always in
danger of cancelling its Judo
events due to an insufficient
number of officials being
available, so if you can spare some
time you will be helping to keep
Judo a thriving sport within
Surrey.
** Juniors **
If you train as a
table official at
the Millennium
League you will
pick up points for
your club !!
