CHURCH NEWS
LWR Project ComfortOn Sunday, October 13, sixty warm, colorful quilts were folded across the pews in our sanctuary—the product of many hands working together throughout the year. And in a basket at the foot of the altar, ten bundled fabric kits are ready to be used for teaching people sewing skills they can use to earn an income on their way to gaining self-sufficiency.
Destined for the very neediest in our world, whether because of chronic poverty or natural disaster, these gifts will be distributed by Lutheran World Relief (LWR)
to refugees and others in need, blessing our neighbors thousands of miles from Alaska in ways perhaps hard for us to imagine. We are grateful to Lynden Transport for their generosity
over the years in delivering our quilts and kits to the ingathering site in Seattle at no cost to us.
From Seattle, they head to LWR headquarters in Baltimore from where they are disbursed around the world. The quilts and kits are tracked by barcodes we include on the box labels, and we are advised of their final destination.
Keeping our Longarm Busy Last month marked two years since the dedication of Gloria Dei’s longarm quilting machine. Given in memory of Margaret Carlson by her family, the quilting machine continues to be a beautiful tribute to Margaret’s giving spirit and love of sewing.Gloria Dei’s Piecemakers and others trained in using the
machine keep it humming—some of their projects have included full-size quilts for our high-school
graduates and for Lutheran Social Services’ fundraisers as well as baby quilts for McKinnell House and other needy kids, Quilts of Valor, and LWR Mission Quilts. To date the Piecemakers have quilted more than 175 quilts with others waiting in the closet at any given time.

Neighborhood Thanksgiving WorshipWe will worship with our friendsand neighbors from Jewel LakeParish and St. Benedicts on Tuesday evening at 7:00pm, November 26. Jewel Lake Parish will host our annual Ecumenical Thanksgiving Worship, involving clergy, lay persons, and a combined choir from each of our traditions. By having the service on Tuesday, those of you who are preparing for dinner on Thursday can worship without the stressof wondering if the turkey isthawing.
A meaningful expression of ourunity in Christ, this communityworship has become animportant tradition for many ofus. So please plan to share in itwith us and invite a friend. Let’sdo our part to fill the sanctuaryas we celebrate the Thanksgivingseason by lifting our hearts andvoices together in praise to ourCreator.
Jewel Lake Parish inviteseveryone to stay for thetraditional fellowship timefollowing worship. Please bringcookies, cake, or other fingerfoods to share if you are able.
The longarm is an important part of our outreach ministry to church and community. The Piecemakers are grateful to the Carlsons for their generosity and to Gloria Dei for supporting their work.

2019 Hunger Print “Give Thanks”
The “kick-off” Sunday for the 2019 Hunger Print is Sunday, November 24. “Give Thanks” is the title of this year’s print. The size is 5” by 11” and will be sold for $30. A table will be set up before and after service for the sale of this year’s print as well as prints from previous years.
In 1979, Anchorage artist Marianne Wieland and Gloria Dei member attended a Bible study at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church where Pastor Rick Halvorson spoke about world hunger. In an effort to make a difference, the first of what was to become known as the “hunger prints” was created.
The embossed prints, hand produced in her studio with the help of volunteers, follow a different biblical them each year. The entire proceeds of these yearly prints, sold through Lutheran churches, are designated to hunger projects both locally and worldwide. The money raised through 2018 have totaled nearly $300,000.
2019 Wieland Print Coming Soon!
The Salvation Army’s MC KINNELL HOUSE is our Loose Change recipient for November. The McKinnell House provides emergency shelter for homeless

LUTHERAN SOCIAL SERVICES UPDATEThanksgiving BlessingWe are finalizing our plans with others in the faith-based community of Anchorage for this year’s Thanksgiving Blessing food basket distribution. This year we are planning to serve 1,325 families. LSSA is the site coordinator for the distribution at Central Lutheran Church and need your help in many ways. As usual we are asking our Lutheran congregations to collect the corn, green beans, stuffing mix or gravy mix that your congregation has been assigned. We also need your help volunteering with set-up and distribution on Monday, November 25th. Shifts on Monday are from 10am to 12:00pm for set-up, 1:30pm to 4:30pm and 4pm to 8pm for distribution. If you can help us out at one of these shifts, please call the LSSA office at 272-0643 ext 10 or email us at [email protected].
Christmas StockingsIt is a tradition to present
Christmas stockings to the families with young children who visit our food pantry during the month of December. Thank you to all the groups and individuals that make stockings for this ministry. We ask that you include a story or activity book about Jesus’ birth in the stockings. If you need instructions or a template of the pattern, please contact the LSSA office.
Food PantryThe Food Pantry continues to see large number of families who are seeking food assistance. We find our shelves especially low on the following items. Tuna, Spam, canned soups and chili, canned fruit, oatmeal, cereals, peanut butter and jelly, macaroni n cheese and packages of ramen are some of the more popular items that we are low on or have none on the shelves. Please remember the Food Pantry the next time you are shopping and simply bring the items with you to church or drop them off at the
LSSA Food Pantry.
Thank YouThanks to everyone who remembered LSSA through Pick.Click.Give on your PFD application. We received $12,717 dollars this year.
Another thank you goes to Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church and retired Pastor Dan Bollerud for another successful Beer and Hymns. You raised $12,383 for the LSSA Food Pantry.
