RED RIVER QUILTERS GUILD DAY MEETING – August 5, 2019 Jackie Pierce opened today’s meeting at 1:05 p.m. She acknowledged August birthdays. Terry Hayward introduced the program for today which was Seminole Piecing (Patchwork). Cindy Andrews (Longview, TX) was the presenter. The program was ex-tremely interesting. The book she referred to was “Seminole Patchwork” and can be ordered from C&T [email protected]. The author of the book is Cheryl Greider Bradkin. Cindy presented a wonderful program.

Please note: The September Guild Meeting will be on September 9th because the first Monday is Labor Day. Be sure to mark this on your calendar.

Mary Sewell, Quilt Show Chairman, spoke about the Quilt Show. Be sure you mark the dates September 27 and 28 on your calendars. As of today, 141 quilts have been entered. There are only two more days to have your quilts entered in this year’s show – August 7 and August 14. Cindy Williams has the volunteer sign-up sheets at the table. It was suggested that those attending the Quilt Show enter from Hearne Avenue (it is then a straight shot to the front of the Ag Building). Parking is located to the right of the building. Bring your Silent Auction items no later than the September meeting. If you need information regarding selling items in the Guild Booth, contact Eloise Litton or Delores Woods.

The Treasurer’s Report was presented by Linda Allsup, Treasurer. The full detail will be listed in the Newsletter. Kriss Kabalan noted that we had one visitor and ten new members joined in July. She discussed the new “Welcome Pam-

phlet” that will be given to each new member. It is filled with general information about the Guild that will help them to learn more about what we do.

Terri Hayward told us about the different programs that will be presented, and the classes that are coming up. Please refer to her segment in this Newsletter for more detailed information.

Terry Blackman, Community Relations spoke about our representation at the Natchitoches Folk Festival. Terry Blackman, Gordon Blackman, Linda McCullough and Jeanna Spilker represented the RRQ. This is a wonderful way to show our presence in surrounding cities. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.

Cathy Callaway thanked the Mission Outreach, Quilt Queens and miscellaneous others who turned in love wrappers. There were 47 finished love wrappers and chemo caps. There is a great need for more chemo caps.

The Sunshine and Shadows notations were read (see write up elsewhere in this Newsletter). The Birthday Raffle was done. Show and Tell was great – many, many beautiful quilts, etc.

Have a great month – see you in September. Linda LeFever, Day Secretary

Service Projects Report – August 2019 Comfort Caps report: At our August guild meeting, 4 Comfort Caps were turned and a very special thank you to Nancy Powell. During intermission and my monthly report about needing more volunteers to help, many ladies came by my table to pick up a kit to sew up at home. Thank you to all who have volunteered. Cathy Callaway Love Wrappers report: From the two tributaries who are diligent workers for our guild, we received 38 quilts, then another 10 quilts from our guild plus one crochet blanket. Thank you to the Mission Outreach and Quilt Queen ladies: Alice Kijak, Rose Jumah, Bettie Henderson, Althea Page, Cathy Ward, Harold Mohrmann, Jeannine James, Marilyn Tisdale, Michelle Lemoine, Priscilla Bogart, Sandy Jones, Stepha-nie Reyes, Susan German, Suzanne Heim, Sue Chase & Lisa McCurdy. The August guild ladies were Francis Stewart, Bobbie Deeter, Jeanna Spilker, Liz Nelson and Susan Sempick.

FYI ... The Love Wrapper Committee/RRQ Service Projects teams will be making Love Wrapper kits on Thursday, August

22. This is a cutting, counting, packaging work day, not a sew day of Mission Outreach. Help is appreciated in the making of kits. Thank you in advance to those who come to help, again 9-3 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. It is a huge job to keep kits availa-ble to all willing to sew our Service Projects for the community. It is our wish that every member of RRQ participate in some way with our Service Projects each year.

Fabric Donation So much fabric, so little time! If you are looking around your sewing space at home but you just see stacks and piles of over-flowing bins of fabric that you are no longer inspired by--then tell yourself “Surely someone can use it! But who?” Give your fab-ric new life by donating it to our Service Projects Love Wrappers program. The Love Wrapper’s committee has an extreme need for your fabric donations and here is what we are looking for:

100% cotton fabric –

One and a half yard-size pieces or bigger

Children’s prints are preferable Fabric colors that read as solid fabric

In case you were unaware how the Love Wrapper comes about, here are some interesting facts. It takes 3.75 yards of fabric & 1.5 yards of batting to make one LW quilt with a cost of approximately $15.33 (if we have to purchase all the supplies). There has been an average in 2019 for 50 finished quilts to come back into the guild each month from our tributaries and guild members. To main-tain this service project, we hold a fund raiser very other year, but the monies raised this year won’t last very long due to rising cost of fabric and decreased donations. So, I am asking that you look around your stash and find something to donate that will help us keep this project from running out of supplies. You can donate fabric to any of the following ladies: Cathy Callaway, Cathy Ward, Lisa McCurdy, and Sandy Jones or bring to the next guild meeting. All donations are appreciated. The Love Wrapper Committee/RRQ Service Projects teams will be making Love Wrapper kits on Thursday, August 22. This is a cutting, counting, packaging work day, not a sew day of Mission Outreach. Help is appreciated in the making of kits. Thank you in advance to those who come to help, again 9-3 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. It is a huge job to keep kits available to all willing to sew our Service Projects for the community. It is our wish that every member of RRQ participate in some way with our Service Projects each year.

Retreat Information Five Day Retreat -- Camp Harris, Minden, LA

We are a group of ladies who love to sew and fellowship with other ladies who enjoy the same. Our group is striving to keep our limit to 20 ladies attending but in the past few years our numbers have dwindled down. There is a regular list of ladies who always attend and an alternate list of names who sometimes attend. Both lists need some new people to be added to our group and we are hoping to find others who would enjoy a retreat atmosphere that is relaxing and peaceful. Everyone brings their own sewing machines, embroidery machines, serger or any handwork you wish to work on--they bring from home. We meet in a community hall where there are 5-foot table provided for each person—sharing a cutting station, iron/ ironing board and layout tables. You would bring your projects, sewing supplies, sewing machine, ott light (if desired) and a comfortable desk chair (or use one the regular church chairs available). This is a five-day retreat starting on a Monday morning and ending on Friday morning departure. The retreat has lodging similar to a motel with double size beds with linens included. The rooms are priced ($175) for two ladies to share one room and we allow you to find your roommate that you would be comfortable rooming or we can match you up with someone compatible. Should you require a single occupancy then the cost would be different ($275). The price of the retreat remains the same whether you should miss a meal or have to shorten your stay at the retreat. Our usual months for our retreat are April, August and November. Point of contact is: Cathy Callaway, 9677 Catawba Drive, Shreveport, LA 71115 - Cell (318) 349-0581 Or Cindy Williams, 316 Brietling Road, Haughton, LA 71037 - Cell (318) 393-2345

Mission Outreach Wow, what a great workshop at the July Mission Outreach. 15 Ladies participated and seemed to have fun putting fat-quarters to good use in Love Wrappers. Job well done and the quilt tops turned out beautiful from nine different fab-rics worked into one baby quilt. Some eager, over-achievers are making up multiple quilts from the kits I had pre-pared. Maybe this experience will spark some ideas for other uses of scrap fabrics and fat quarters that seem to accu-mulate and multiply in our stashes. Thanks for helping to bring my personal stash of fat-quarters down quite a bit. Picking up one or two here and there seemed to add up in a hurry. Thank you to all others who donated fat quarters to our Love Wrapper collection of fabrics, we used about 150-200 fat-quarters (a shout out thanks to the beautiful coor-dinated stack donated by Linda McGehee.-- hope you could spot the quilts from your gift during our group show-and-tell at the RRQ meeting. They are beautiful) On August 24 Sue Chase will be teaching those signed up for her workshop on Screen Bags. Students be sure you have all your supplies and whatever pre-assigned cutting ready when you come to begin class at 9 a.m. that Saturday. Being prompt and ready will make the overall experience better for everyone, esp. yourself. Mission Outreach will "go on as usual" for our monthly gathering Friday and Saturday, August 23-24. You may sew Love Wrappers or work on your own projects while receiving suggestions and help whenever you need or want it (and occasionally without asking). If you are not signed up for a class, you are welcome to come on your own sched-ule between 9-3 both days. FYI ... The Love Wrapper Committee/RRQ Service Projects teams will be making Love Wrapper kits on Thursday, August 22. This is a cutting, counting, packaging work day, not a sew day of Mission Outreach. QUILT GUILD BOOTH

As you all know our 2019 Red River Quilt Show is coming soon. In the past we have always had a “Guild Booth” and we plan on doing so again this year. For those of you who don’t know about the Guild Booth our members make homemade items that pertain to the art of sewing and sell their items in the booth. The member receives 90% of the money that their items sell for and the guild receives the other 10% of the money. Each item you put in the booth will be given a number and that is how the accounting is handled. Say you have 10 items that are all the same each item will have to be assigned a specific number. (10 tea towels, 10 numbers). Taxes have to be collected on all sales. Also since you have put your items in the booth you are required to volunteer to man the booth for a set time. After the show is over the money is tallied and matched with the numbers and in a few days you will receive a check from the guild for your items that were sold. So get to crafting and get ready to make some extra mon-ey$$ so you can buy more FABRIC!!! Just a idea of things to make:

Place Mats Oven boas Baby blankets Bowl cozies Table runners Baby bibs Grocery bags Potato bags Burp cloths Quilts Garments Crocheted Items

Quilt Show Program Ads

Advertising in our quilt show program pays for the printing and it generates a little income. The ads are fairly inexpensive and placing an ad in our program is pretty much painless as I do the lay-outs. Some members choose to place an ad in the program to donate money to the guild and acknowledge someone (s) contribution to the guild, an individual’s quilting or creative growth or just a kindness. Please also consider any business owners you know who might be interested in participating. You can call me (Mary Beth Beene, 426-8188) and I will make the contact. The deadline for ad copy is September 6. I hope that you enjoy having a quilt show program and that you will consider prospective advertisers.

Ad rates are: 1/4 page ad (4.75” x 1.75”): $25 1/2 page ad (4.75” x 3.75”): $35 Full page ad (4.75” x 7.5”): $70

Quilt Show Report Any of you worried about the area where the Quilt show is being held please consider entering the Fairgrounds off Hearne Avenue. It is a direct shot and there is a big sign showing you where to turn. There will also be a gate open on the Greenwood Road. As of this time, we have 149 quilts registered for the show. How many of you are not entering items in the show because we have judges to CRITIQUE our work?? There are words associated with Critique that create negative feelings. Let me Explain some of the words. (from Merriam-Webster Thesaurus) *Synonyms of critique--criticism, examine, notice, review and opinion, *Synonyms of criticism -- critique, examine, notice, review and opinion,

*Synonyms of criticize -- blame, condemn, denounce, dis, fault, knock, rebuke or reprimand. The word Criticize does not have a place at our quilt show. The Critiques are to educate, admire and to guide you in your quilting process to strive to get better at your art each time you tackle a project. It is to show where improve-ments in your work can be helpful. We are our own worst judges. Most of us know our short comings therefore the Critiques should be very helpful and enlightening. Mary Sewell, QS Chairman August 2019

QUILT SHOW WILL BE HERE BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, PLEASE REVIEW THE ITEMS BELOW
