Avinash Thadhani and Nelvin Adriatico jumped at the chance to wed on March 14, 2015 or “Pi Day” as the more intellectual types call it. “Their wedding day fell on the perfect Pi day, the mathematical ratio of a circle’s circumference.” Much like the unique date they picked, they also picked a special tradition with a Hindu ceremony. However, with the hard work of the wedding planner Michele Gott, she planned the perfect

FRIENDS OF GREYSTONE HOST BHHS Ap HISTORY CLASSES TOUR march 29, 2015

The Friends of Greystone hosted the Spring Greystone Mansion History Tour for BHHS Students in 11th Grade Advanced Placement United States History classes taught by teachers Malia Frutschy and Dan Moroaica. The students learn the importance of Greystone Mansion, the Doheny Family that lived and built the Greystone Estate, and their relationship to California History and the Tea Pot Dome Scandal.

Although I knew the Doheny family left a very heavy impact on the mansion, I always thought of them as rich people living in a marvelous house. Visiting the Greystone Mansion completely changed my perspective. I learned the signi- ficances of the many rooms and how they tied into the whole story about the Dohenys. Visiting historical landmarks is very beneficial to all students around the world, strengthening their knowledge, broadening their perspectives, and helping them explore much of what seemed impossible to understand. Lauren Hirsh, ms. Frutschy’s Student. Before going to tour the mansion I actually had heard about it during one of my classes in APUSH. All I knew about it, however, was that it was a huge estate belonging to a wealthy businessman from long ago. When I went there, I didn’t really expect to learn much more, but I was blown away by the flow of information. Through all these tours and visits to historical locations, I was able to come to the conclusion that physically visiting a specific place is much more effective than simply reading material out of a book. Will Kim, ms. Frutschy’s Student. The Greystone Mansion taught me the details of the spirit behind the Roaring 20’s and how people acted during the age. The extravagance of the manor demonstrated the value of material wealth to the prosperous. The different tiles, colors, stones, all showed how people enjoyed aesthetic beauty. The rooms dedicated to past-times like the theater, bowling alley, and the card room, depict the 20’s love for entertainment. Historical landmarks are noteworthy in their ability to give a visual insight on historical events. Brendan Yoon, ms. Frutschy’s Student.

Using the traditional method of fermenting in a brine of only salt water, fresh dill, garlic and spices, they transform summer pickling cucumbers into something your “Bubbe” (that’s Yiddish for Grandma) would be proud of. Green beans fresh from the farmers’ market are transformed with vinegar, spices and a simple water-bath canning process. This is the perfect way to get a jump start on pickling season or consider entering your own pickle in the Beverly Hills Farmers’ Market PickleFest Contest every August!
