A huge thank you was given to our now passed Grand Exalted Ruler for his dedication to our order. He did a great job as GER, reporting that the total donations by Elks in 2015-2017 was $9,078,114! This is the second highest total on record! Fitting consider- ing his theme for the year was community focus. Our new GER Michael F. Zellen was elected for 2016- 2017. Zellen has been an Elk since 1968. He was the president of the Massachusetts State Elks Association in 1996, and Special Deputy GER for the state since 2007. He also served on the board of grand trustees for four years. Mr. Zellen spoke of a personal debt he owes to our order. He was able to finish his university edu- cation after the untimely death of his father, thanks to an emergency grant from the Elks National Founda- tion. He said his vision for the order, which is encompassed in his theme for the year, “Elks leading the way”. Zellen said “Elks have to lead the way through youth programs, supporting veterans, combating veteran homelessness, and serving our country in many other ways.” He also charged each officer of each lodge to sponsor one new member this year. I’m in. Let’s do what he said “kick the door down” and recruit new mem- bers to join our order. These golf outings are tremendous fun and the golf committee donates a lot of money to help with our lodge charities. Most of you know who John Hill was, but some of you may not. John, first of all, was our friend. He was a three time passed ER, held many state offices, and was instrumental in developing many of the programs we carry out at the lodge now. For me he was an inspiration, a teacher, a wealth of Elks knowledge, an advisor, and a friend. As our Exalted Ruler he taught me to be true to ritual, keep the best interest of the lodge in mind at all times, listen to the members, and lead by example. This is what I have tried to do, and will continue to do to the best of my ability. He also taught me to NOT BE LATE! Ha-ha. Thanks John boy we will always miss you. The last family night is the 18 th , don’t miss out on the chance to bring friends and family up to enjoy the pool, and get them to join our lodge. Remember you must sign your guest in, and only members in good standing can purchase goods from the lodge. Period! This was in last month’s newsletter, yet we still have issues. ALE’s laws not mine. We could lose our license to sell alcohol for 90 days or more. This would be devastat- ing to our order to say the least. The Apple Breakfast is set for Sept.4 th this year. All help is welcome and appreciated. If you can’t help, please join us for breakfast that morning. All the money raised will go directly to Christmas Charities. We won’t be mailing tickets this year, but will have them on sale in the office prior to the breakfast. Please purchase your tickets in advance to help fund this effort. In closing everyone hear this. If you take advantage of our lodge, for example: bringing your family to the pool without buying a pool membership, bring in county guest in to the pool, not signing your guest in, say- ing “awe go up there and get you a drink they won’t say nothing”, taking something that doesn’t belong to you, or anything of that nature… you are really just taking from yourself! Wear and tear goes up, so does the bills, so does your dues. The lodge is very reasonable, in my opinion, let’s do our part to keep it that way. You can’t audition for life, only perform! Happy summer Elks Lodge 1616,

It’s HOT!!! You know where it’s cool? At the Hendersonville Elks Lodge, the pool and the beverages stay

cold! Get out of the heat and come chill with us!

On the 4th of July, Leading Knight JJ Kilpatrick and his incredible squad of volunteers, along with the pool

staff, threw a party for all to celebrate our country’s independence. Santa and a funny looking elf showed up

and raised $400 dollars for our Christmas Charities! That is amazing!! Thank you all for supporting the pro-

gram. The raffle for the table and the choice parking spot raised $700 dollars for the same cause. We are well

on our way to paying for our charity program. Thanks to everyone who is chipping in to make a difference in

the community. I hope everybody had a great time, and thanks again to all who helped and attended. That

same day Kelly and I flew to Houston Texas to join thousands of Elks from across our great nation for the

156th Elks National Convention. For me going to the convention is like a charging station for my Elks bat-

tery. You want to feel overwhelming patriotism and pride to be an Elk? Stand up with 5000 Elks and sing

“America the Beautiful” and “God bless America”, and pledge allegiance to the most awesome flag in the

world 5000 strong!! I’m getting pumped just thinking about it. A huge thank you was given to our now

Where did the summer go? It is already August and school will begin be-fore we are ready! Remember the Pool is open everyday until Monday August 29th and from that day on we will be open ONLY on weekends (Sept 3rd, 4th, 5th, 10th, 11th, 17th and 18th). So come early and stay later and enjoy the BEST pool in Henderson County. Our College guards will begin leaving in early August so come by and wish them well and thank them for another short summer. Alicia Cook–

UNC-A, Julia Michels– UNC-W, Maddie Tweed– AB Tech, Drew Schwerkert– MCSU, Molly Horton– Berry College, Savannah Tinsley– Queens, Madi-son Vaughn– ASU. The LAST Family Night will be held on Thursday, August 18th (7pm-10pm). Due to the televised High School Football game on Thursday, August 25th and all other athletic conflicts we will not have enough guards to be open at night on August 25th. Please circle Saturday, October 1st at 9:30am on your calendar, as we

will put the cover on the pool and clean up the deck that day. We need 20-25 people for about 2 hours that day.

POOL NEWS

Wow what a great 4th of July event we had here at the Pool! I would like to thank everyone

that helped out: Ray, Lewis, Mike, Dalton, Austin, Erica, Ken, The Mummerts (Richard &

JoAnne), Lisa, Kevin, Jay and all the lifeguards (if I forgot anyone I am truly sorry and

Thank you). We were all fed well and the BBQ was a hit again this year! It was a great time

had by all and we always welcome more and new volunteers for this and all of our events.

We raised some cash for Christmas Charities while enjoying great company and events! I

know I can say that we all are looking forward to next year’s celebration already!!

Fraternally Yours,

JJ Kilpatrick

2016 Hendersonville Elk’s Christmas Charities

Each year our Lodge #1616 comes together to provide a Merry Christmas for 130 families right here in our hometown by providing a week’s supply of groceries, fresh produce, toilet-ries and cleaning supplies. We also work in conjunction with Toys for Tots to provide toys for these families with small children. These items are gathered and packaged here at our lodge and delivered personally to each family by our members on Christmas Eve morning. This takes thousands of dollars and several hundred volunteer hours. Why do we do this? Because we are Elk’s. Charity is our crowning virtue. Get involved in our Christmas Charities Fundraisers by supporting our events throughout the year.

Grand Lodge Convention

In June, Drove President, Billie Schell, along with DOES Donna Ludolph, Margie Mitchell, and

Sandy Brady traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska, to attend our Grand Lodge Convention celebrating 95

years as the Benevolent, Patriotic Order of DOES of the United States of America. This year’s Na-

tional Convention was hosted by Lincoln Drove No. 4; and there were 305 DOES, plus Bullshippers

and guests, in attendance. On our Drove’s behalf, President Billie accepted 3 awards: (1) we re-

ceived 3rd Place in the 2015 Drove of the Year competition; (2) we tied with Union Drove No. 148,

South Carolina, for the number of new members (6) initiated in 2015 for droves with 26 to 50 mem-

bers; and (3) we received a Certificate of Appreciation for the donations we made to Dogs for the

Deaf in 2015. Billie also received her password, officially making her a Grand Lodge member.

Next year’s 2017 convention will be held in Rochester, Minnesota, June 4th thru 7th, so begin making

your plans to attend. It’s a great experience.

Cup Auction will also be held. The event will be held at

Saint Paul’s Mountain Vineyards, 588 Chestnut Gap Rd.,

Hendersonville. Tickets are $10 and will include a glass of

wine, hors d’oeuvres, desserts, and a raffle ticket for door

prize drawings. Wine, by the glass or bottled, will be avail-

able to purchase. Proceeds raised will be used to fund local

charities that call upon us for assistance.

As an added note, many of the local agencies we support are in great need of school supplies. If you

would care to donate some items, please bring them to our August 10th meeting. You can also leave

them in our DOES box in the hall closet at the Lodge. Thank you for anything you can provide.
