Just six years before his untimely death in 1931, Horváth wrote „Geschichten aus dem

Wiener Wald“ („Tales from the Vienna Woods“), in which he predicted Hitler's rise to power

and the beginning of another World War. With humor, harshness and compassion, he deals

with his heroes from the lower middle class who believe in God by habit and support

National Socialism through apathy and ignorance and are neither "good" nor "bad" ... only

"petty" and "wicked". Thus, without any hope, says Horváth.

Vienna, Presentation of the book „Griechische Spuren in und um Wien“ ("Greek

traces in and around Vienna"), 27th March

The presentation of the book „Griechische

Spuren in und um Wien“ ("Greek traces in and

around Vienna"), under the patronage of the

Greek Ministry of Digital Policy,

Telecommunications and Media and the Press

and Information Office of the Greek Embassy in

Vienna, will take place on 27th March at the Palais

Palffy in Vienna.

Bernd Moldan has succeeded in combining his

two great passions, Greece and photography, in

an original and extremely noteworthy book. In

Bernd Moldan's work, the historical traces of the

Greeks in Vienna are presented in a concise and

reader-friendly manner, beginning with the time

when the city was the economic, political and

cultural center of the Habsburg monarchy.

With the help of the high-quality photographic

material, the history of some of the most

magnificent buildings that still adorn the Austrian

capital and are linked to the historical presence

of the Greeks in this city for three centuries is

presented.

In this sense, this book is a special travel guide in time and space, which follows the

footsteps and paths of the Greeks in and around Vienna and thus appeals to both Greek

and Austrian readers, as well as the historically and culturally interested visitors to Vienna.

Athens, Presentation of the book „April in Stein“ by Prof. Dr. Robert Streibel,

29th & 30th March

The Austrian historian Robert Streibel will visit Athens in March in order to present the

Greek translation of his historical novel "April in Stein" (publishing house Alfeios).

During the National Socialist tyranny, the prison facility in Krems-Stein was the largest of

the "Ostmark". Opponents of the regime were imprisoned there - communists and

"saboteurs", insurgents from Austria and Eastern Europe. On 6th April 1945 in the face of the

advancing Red Army, the prison warden opened the gates of the detention center, but SS,

SA, and local people chased and murdered hundreds of political prisoners. Among the

victims were Greeks, who had been taken to the penitentiary in the summer of 1944. Some

managed to escape, some survived hidden in the basement, and their reports form the basis

of Robert Streibel's many-voiced panorama.

On Saturday, 30th March 2019 the book "April in Stein" will be presented at 12.00 at Polis

Art Café (5, Pesmazoglou Str. & Stadiou St., Athens) in the spirit of an active culture of

remembrance. The writer Dr. Annita Panaretou as well as the book’s author will discuss the

politics, society, science and culture. We will be organizing a couple of events in the

framework of this priority during the year.

In March many events related to Austria will take place again, which I would like to draw your

attention to. Those who want to read in the future must leaf through the past, as the French

novelist André Malraux once said, and in this sense, Greek translations of remarkable Austrian

books will be presented in Athens in March. Moreover, with his new book Bernd Moldan invites

to a Greek stroll through Vienna. I wish you a pleasant arrival of spring.

My warmest regards,

Ambassador Andrea Ikić-Böhm
