Ergo’s Experience of Educational Transformation

At Ergo we pride ourselves on treating all of our partner customers as individuals, not as “one size fits all”. Our aim is to create a solution that reflects the personality, individuality and goals of the customer, setting it apart from the rest.

We design tailored ICT solutions that positively impact teaching and learning, and we continue to update our solutions as the partnership progresses. We focus on delivering the objectives set out in Improvement and Training & Development Plans.

We believe that investing time to understand a School’s personality and learning goals, and aligning these with the ICT hardware deployment strategy, is essential for effective ICT transformation.

We went on this journey with Wibsey Primary School, working with them to create a dedicated and interactive learning zone that had the ‘WOW’ factor. We are also continually working alongside students and staff to fully understand what they feel will make their School a great place to learn.

At Chichester High School For Girls, Ergo worked with the‘ChiHigh Ergonauts’ to create the Chichester Cloud Services Network, a real example of collaborative working to a common goal.

This journey has created a portal that brings all of the school software to one place, allowing freedom for all and access anytime. The impact has been massive, from the redesign of their public website to the way the pupils receive their homework….and Ergo has been with Chichester High School every step of the way.

Infrastructure Services

Notley Academy embarked on a 4-year strategy to deliver the management teams’ vision of a state-of-the-art Sixth Form Centre and on-demand learning for all pupils.

Speed of network access was top of the wish list as it would allow pupils and teaching staff to access resources of any type, quickly and efficiently, anytime and anywhere.

With a phased approach, we added site wide managed wireless with log on speeds across the campus of under 20 seconds.

Our 4 step approach to changeOur approach to managing change is simple and highly effective. We take the whole organisation through the journey together, making sure that every step is successful and understood, ensuring ‘buy-in’ from all stakeholders. Our key stages are The Bridge, The Core, Nurture, and Innovation – and each stage is as important as the next. Our ethos is that there are no short cuts. The foundation we jointly create has to be solid and fully in line with your development plans.

The Bridge Developing the ICT visionto understand exactly what the ICT must deliver to all users in the Customer Universe.

Innovation This is where it all happens. We are now able to think about the ‘why not’ instead of the ‘if only’. The foundation has been set for the magical parts of the ICT strategy to enhance the pupils’ learning experience.

Nurture Bringing all of thestakeholders on the journey, so that everyone is in a position to push forward the aspirations of staff, pupils, parents and the community.

The Core Designing and deliveringthe ‘must have’ infrastructure to the highest level, to ensure a solid base to grow and develop.

The Transformation Team The partnership is absolutely crucial for success, with Ergo feeling like an extension of your Team. The partnership will extend beyond being your ICT supplier into a galvanised effort to drive through change and make all education establishments want to emulate the success story that will be your School, College or University. When a lot is ordinary, it’snice to be extraordinary...

Case StudyThe Manchester Health Academy

The Manchester Health Academy is a mixed secondary school in Manchester which opened in September 2009, replacing Brookway High School & Sports College.

The Academy was built with less traditional teaching methods in mind. It features three large Learning Zones, each of which can be used to teach up to four classes per zone. There are also eight traditional style classrooms for practical subjects such as Science, Design, Technology, Cooking, Music, ICT, Drama, Art and Dance.

The ChallengeThe Academy wanted to take control of their network and move away from their outsourced managed services provider - two years into this outsourced relationship the promised new network had still not been delivered! This meant the staff and pupils were disillusioned with the IT resources available to them, and the management team felt that the network had been designed from a template, and not specifically for them. The Academy decided to exit the managed services relationship, and went out to tender for a partner that would work with them to build a tailored solution utilising as much of the incumbent technology as possible.

The ResultThe Ergo and Manchester Team started from the beginning, understanding the goals and aspirations of the management team, pupils, staff and the wider community. Ergo’s view was that all of the skills and technology were already present at the Academy, so what was required was a remoulding of their approach….getting their infrastructure to work for them instead of hindering them.

The network design and deployment, along with the support structure, were completely rewritten for the Academy. This has now delivered the environment the stakeholders were after from the very start. Our meetings with the management team are no longer ‘what if’ but ‘what can we do next.’ Being able to plan for the future, instead of concentrating on the day-to-day, has been a key success.

The Result

The University of Sunderland has been providing higher education in the city since 1901 and it currently has 17,055 students, including 2,405 international students from 117 countries.

The key to the University’s longevity is its ability to adapt to change; they are widely recognised as an innovative, forward-thinking university with high standards of teaching, research and support. The University works closely with some of the world’s leading companies, and with two campuses it is perfectly placed to provide a rewarding experience for students.

Case StudyThe University of Sunderland

The University wanted to deliver high-quality, robust ICT facilities into the libraries on both campuses. Whilst the brief was to source a solution that would match the superb facilities, value for money was also a key factor. The aim was to introduce interactive, touchscreen information kiosks that would use a public web browser, which students could simply walk up to and quickly search for books and other key information resources.

As Ergo has been a key partner with the University for a number of years, supplying a range of laptops through the NDNA framework agreement, they had no hesitation in contacting Ergo to discuss the As3 All-in-One Touch Screen PC as an alternative way of implementing the information kiosks required.

The Challenge

Ergo’s As3 All-in-One PC was identified by the University as the solution that met all their requirements. Its stylish black finish, fully interactive 21.5” screen, plus its true all-in-one format, allows excellent space management and a ‘clean’ study environment for the students.

Dave Hartis, IT Services buyer at the University, commented, “The way we are using the As3s in the University’s libraries, in terms of being wall mounted and running a public web browser, would be classed as ‘different’ to the norm – but it is working really well and we couldn’t be happier with it. We’ve also received fantastic feedback from our students, with many of them saying how easy the As3’s are to use and how it saves them time in the library when searching for books, journals and other study material.”

ICT ServiceErgo’s approach to service and support is simple - it’s our Vision Statement, and it hasn’t changed for years…“To help you realise and implement your ICT vision”. To deliver this we have three key principles, all critical to delivering customer satisfaction:-

Everything we do is in-house:► Our support is undertaken by our own dedicated, skilled and experienced team of engineers. ► We do not use scripts or automated call handling. ► When a support call is received, it’s dealt with by an Ergo engineer who is trained to resolve all levels of customer issues.

Professional Support Services:► Ergo’s Product Training Service enables customers to perform their own warranty repairs on Ergo devices. ► Ergo’s Infrastructure Training Service, includes Hardware Support (e.g. VMWare, VSphere), Primary School Network Management (Free2Teach) and Secondary School VLE (Scholaris). ► Ergo’s approach empowers a School’s skilled internal team to manage significant aspects of their own systems, driving maximum return on investment and a lower total cost of ownership.

“Ergo’s support is by far the best customer service I have received in 6 years of working in the IT/Education sector.”

Alan Walker, Network Manager, Stockport School

“It was vital for me to find a company that would provide the level of support I expect, and Ergo have managed to surpass this.”

Jenny Bray, Network Manager, The Redhill Academy

“The support we have received from Ergo is fantastic, if we have any problems, they make sure we are always happy with the resolution.”

Mark Fuller, Network Manager, Notley High School and Braintree Sixth Form

► We are knowledgeable - we take time to understand our customers’ needs. ► We are practical - we design our products and services to be user-friendly, pragmatic and ready-to-go. ► We are independent - we’re unbiased, this allows us to be both innovative and straightforward.

Peter Watters, Director of ICLT, Claremont Fan Court School

“Ergo’s consultative approach is second to none. They take the time to explain the methods behind it, which gives us a growing knowledge base internally.”

Dan Joslin, Systems Manager, Sweyne Park School

► First line support for end users ► Second or third line support for network teams► Telephone support ► Remote support► Training and transition support ► Return to base warranties► Onsite response and fix warranties ► Onsite weekly engineer support

“When I call Ergo’s Technical Support Team they understand my problem straight away, which then helps me resolve my problem quicker.”

Parmjit Olak, Network Manager, Horsforth School

Ergo’s Professional Support Services enables us to offer a flexible, customised approach to service and support to meet customer’s specific requirements, including:

And finally, Ergo’s service and support is built on a foundation of solid project delivery. We adhere to PRINCE2 Project Management principles for all infrastructure implementations and large scale hardware deployments. Ergo’s Project Managers work closely with our technical engineers to assist with the planning, implementation and evaluation of all major projects. This ensures that our customers feel 100% supported when they buy a product or service from Ergo.

Ergo is certified to ISO9001:2008 (Quality Management Systems), ISO14001:2004 (Environmental Management Systems), OHSAS18001:2007 (Health & Safety Management Systems) and PAS99:2006 (Integrated Management Systems).
