From the Principal’s Desk
Andrew Evetts
Principal
Dear Parents,
A big happy Mother’s Day to all our parents and grandparents at Burdekin Chris)an College. I
love the scripture, John 3 Verse 16 that says, “For God so loved the world that he gave His one
and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” This scripture
to me, really epitomises what mothers do for their children. I didn’t really realise what my
mother totally did for me, as a young boy growing into my teenage years and then onto adult-
hood, un)l I finally married and had my own children and watched what my wife does for our
children. She is their rock, counsellor, educator, carer and the most constant person in their
lives.
As I watch my own children grow I am con)nually reminded how important it is to have a
mother that nurtures our young children through to becoming adults and then leaving home.
Fathers in society seem to be always busy doing something but mothers are always busy guid-
ing and leading our children. They run them here and everywhere, always pu1ng the child first
and themselves second. This reminds me of how Jesus put His life on the cross for us so that
we may live a life of freedom with Him. Thank you to all the mothers that turned up to our
Mothers Day lunch last Friday. A big thank you to Cherish for catering for this func)on. As a
school it’s nice to spoil our mothers and grandmothers on this special day.
Yours in Christ

WE’RE TAKING IT IN OUR STRIDE ON FRIDAY, 24 MAY 2013
Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to
incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, ac)ve way to get around. You can
teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:
Walking with them the whole way to school
If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop
If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the
rest of the way.
Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity,
heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach
your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.
Remember, Acve Kids are Healthy Kids!
If you would like to walk to school on Friday 24 May, Burdekin Chris-an College staff and stu-
dents are to meet outside Dal Santo’s Deli, on Macmillan Street, at 8:30am. The school will
provide a light breakfast for those who walked when they arrive back at school.

Volunteer blue card application form If you are a regular volunteer at the Burdekin Christian College I would encourage you to go through the simple process of obtaining a ‘Working with Children’ Blue Card. Applications for volunteers are processed free of charge and are current for 3 years. The Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Act 2000 re-quires anyone over 18 seeking to work with children under 18 years of age in certain categories to obtain a blue card.
Some examples of people who need a blue card are: Volunteers assisting children in classroom activities, Volunteer cleaners or groundskeepers at a school, Volunteer tuckshop or canteen staff.
The Woolworths Earn & Learn program is back! Please help support students at the Burdekin Christian College by collecting stickers and either sending them to school or putting them in our Earn and Learn box in Woolworths Supermarket, Ayr. This community program enables our school and Early Learning Centre to earn educational re-sources simply through the school community shopping at Woolworths. Last year our school benefitted from the many points earned by purchasing great items such as guitars, musical in-struments, reading books and educational resources for Maths, English and Science. The more points we earn the more great items we can select from. From Monday 8th April until Sunday 9th June 2013, when you shop at Woolworths you will be given a Woolworths Earn & Learn Point. There’ll be one Woolworths Earn & Learn Point for eve-ry $10 spent. Collect these Woolworths Earn & Learn Points and our school will be able to re-deem these for more educational resources. So please get behind this great initiative and start collecting for our school.

STUDENTS, parents and teachers of Burdekin Christian College discovered amazing facts about the wetlands of the Bowling Green Bay area on a Wonderful World of Wetlands field trip on May 1. NQ Dry Tropics and BBIFMAC have been working with the school community to help them establish and monitor salvinia weevil nurseries. Salvinia is one of the world’s worst water weeds and breeding and releasing their natural predator is a great way to help combat this weedy problem. NQ Dry Tropics Community Support Coordina-tor, Laura Dunstan said the field trip participants were taken on a journey around the wetlands, including Lillesmere Lagoon. “The students discovered how to test the quality of water using macroin-vertebrates and learnt about local water quality issues and how to protect our wetlands.” “One of the highlights of the day was when they released their weevils into Lillesmere Lagoon.
Dennis Stubbs from BBIFMAC said, “It’s always good engaging with students and
raising awareness of their local area and how the impact of water quality affects
our wetlands. It’s really good to get them learning while they're young and hopefully
the knowledge stays with them for life.”
The participants travelled to see a NQ Dry Tropics fishway to observe how they enable fish migrate from the Great Barrier Reef up into the wet-lands. The Burdekin Fish Restocking Group joined the party to tell the students some amazing stories about barramundi. Paul Brice from the restocking group said, “It's a great expe-rience to expose kids to fish restocking. It’s a hands on experience having live barra-mundi in their hands. Hopefully we get some more helpers with fish restocking. We have put over a million fish into the sys-tem in the last 15 years and prior to Burde-kin Fish Restocking, wild barramundi were nearly fished out of existence. We have very healthy waterways now and the fishways are terrific. Fish have free run from lagoons to the sea.”

Library News
Keep up the good reading for the Premier’s Reading Challenge which all our classes
are participating in….Please make sure that all the books you read at home you
pass on to your classroom teacher for them to record.
BOOK FAIR has been open in the school hall since Friday and will close on Thurs-
day 16th of May. Thank you to everyone for helping with the smooth running of the
‘book shop’ and for supporting the Book Fair.
National Simultaneous Storytime is an important annual campaign that aims to en-
courage more young Australians to read and enjoy
books. Now in its 13th successful year it is a colourful,
vibrant and fun event that aims to promote the value
of reading and literacy using an Australian children's
book that explores age appropriate themes. Every
year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Aus-
tralian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in
libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and
many other places around the country. At Burdekin Christian College, our storytime
will take place in conjunction with under 8’s day on Monday 20th May.
Reminder: This year’s National Simultaneous Storytime book is ‘The Wrong Book” by Nick
Bland. On Monday 20th May all students are encouraged to get dressed up as
their favourite character from the book. There will be a prize for the Best Dressed girl
and boy.
If any mums, dads, aunties and or grandparents would like to volunteer some hours
in the library, please let Miss Kim know or speak to Mrs Saunders in the office.
Thank You
Miss Kim

Toddlers
Our toddlers have been having lots of fun during the last few weeks. They have been busily
finishing off their Mother’s Day giLs. We hope you liked them and had a wonderful Moth-
er’s Day.
Last Friday we held our Mother’s Day morning tea. It went really well. Thanks to the mothers
who could a@end, we hope you had a good )me mingling with the other mothers. Thanks
to Mr Eve@s for sharing in the morning.
Outside play has been extended as the days have been wonderful. Only on the odd occasion
we have had to stay inside because of the weather.
Home corner has been a really popular inside play area, all the children like playing there.
We have also been doing lots of art like finger pain)ng, bu@erfly pain)ng and golf ball
pain)ng.
During group )me, we sing ‘Open Shut Them’ and ‘Five Cheeky Monkeys’. The children also
ask to sing ‘Once I Caught a Fish Alive’ and ‘Twinkle Twinkle Li@le Star’. Dancing to ‘Robot’
and ‘Silly Sausage’ is a favourite of the children as well. They know what they would like to
do.
