FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Our next Convention will soon take place in Ljubljana, a beautiful old city in Slovenia, I look forward to meeting many bonsai enthusiasts there.

Hopefully your Bonsai have all survived the Winter and are again looking fresh and vibrant, I am sure there will be many fine specimens on display for us to enjoy.

A further reminder to regarding the World Bonsai Friendship Federation photographic com-petition.

All delegates have been circulated with details of how to enter, EBA Judges have been ap-pointed. Now all that is required is a response from our members to submit photographs of their Bonsai to ensure that the Europe is well represented in the Competition.

At past Round Table and Annual General Meetings, attendance by members has been rela-tively poor. My request is, please attend the meetings, give the EBA Board you views or opinion of what you see is happening or not within the European Bonsai scene. Put forward suggestions or ideas you may have for the further promotion of Bonsai in our Region. Input from members is a vital for the continuing health of the organization.

Finally please support our Slovenian Bonsai Friends and support our next Convention which they are organizing.

European Bonsai Association (EBA) - and European Suiseki Association (ESA) - Conven-tion is an annual international exhibition of bonsai and suiseki. Every year it is hosted by a different EBA member country and is organized by the national bonsai organization.

The 28th convention is hosted by the Slovenian Bonsai Club and will take place in the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana.

The Convention is one of the most important European bonsai events. The exhibition offers to every EBA and ESA member country the opportunity to be represented by their best bonsai and suiseki. Thus once a year all the best European bonsai trees are gath-ered together at one place. It is also a great opportunity for visitors to see that bonsai is more than just a tree in the pot, bonsai is a real work of art.

The Convention also has a rich accompanying program: The New Talent Contest (NTC) with participants from all attending countries, two world-class masters (Kevin Willson from the UK and Salvatore Liporace from Italy) will demonstrate their skills in bonsai shaping. The EBA Convention is a social event as well - bonsai enthusiasts from all over Europe can share their knowledge and experience.

Visitors will enjoy a big area with exhibits and traders offering all bonsai material avail-able for purchase tools, bonsai trees, pots, wire and everything else.

History of the EBA, in parts

EBA Newsletter Number 3, January 1983

In Newsletter 3 it was realized that the creation of a European Bonsai Association is some-what more difficult than anticipated. Not only the funding was not easy, the large distances between the countries would have to be overcome and the preliminary statutes needed some revision. (look at page 12)

There was little correspondence between the bonsai clubs and the coordinator Marc De Beule mostly in connection with the meeting in Valencia; only 4 clubs were able to come. At the Valencia Meeting the today’s name of the organization, “EBA” instead of “FEBA” has been finally established and some changes to the statutes were made.(look at page 13+14)

The publication of an own bonsai magazine was considered to be impractical and it held on to the publication of the newsletter (NL).(look at page 15)

In the NL 3 was also published the invitation to the British Bonsai Convention in Keele and it was asked for more information about bonsai clubs in some selected European countries. On page 17 a document containing the tasks of F(o)BBS is copied. It already has historic value.(look at page 16+17)

The NL 4 of the EBA will be presented in the next newsletter. All pages of the EBA NL3 can be requested from the Secretary as a pdf.file.
