Key Facts

Tobacco kills up to half of its

users

The annual death toll of

more than ve million

could rise to more than

eight million by 2030 unless

urgent acon is taken to

control the tobacco epidemic.

More than 80% of the worlds one billion smokers live in low- and middle-

income countries.

Total consumpon of tobacco products is increasing globally, though it is

decreasing in some high-income and upper middle-income countries.

Only 5.4% of peopleare protected by

comprehensive naonal

smoke-free laws.

In 2008, the number of

people protected from

second-hand smoke

increased by 74% to 362million from 208 million

in 2007.

Of the 100 most

populous cies, 22 are

smoke free.

Almost half of all

children regularlybreathe air polluted by

tobacco smoke.

Over 40% of children

have at least one

smoking parent.

Ideas for campaigns: Ask as many

people you can and

start brainstorming as

a team.

Make a streetcampaign, tell

people about the

day by showing

some campaign

materials.

Make a song to

remind people to

stop smoking and

sing it on your campaign.

Take ashtray with water in it, bring

it to smokers and ask him/her to

put the smoke out there.

Make it one day

without smoke, give

them candy or gum.

Tell people about

the Tobacco Alert

Campaign by making

a presentaon in a

workshop or spread

the news by social

media.

Collaborate with the an-tobacco

organizaon or other community

organizaons in your country.

One of the great regrets of my life is

that I smoked. If I could say anything to

anybody starng out in life it would be,

Whatever you do, dont smoke. I have

had to recover from that and been lucky

that I have been able to stop.
