NEWSLETTER 9 17 MAY 2019
A big welcome to 3 new learners in our Grade 9 class - Taymore Anderson, Nande Kutuka and Taina
Tshaya.
Reporting relatives who have passed away
We have in the past offered the school's condolences when we hear about family members who pass
away. Because we aren't always aware of this it has resulted in us reporting it in the newsletter in some
but not other instances and this has perhaps created the impression of favouritism. The same applies to
births in the family. From now on, we will not be reporting on either in our newsletters. My apologies for
the impression this has created, it was never a 'choice' but rather whether I heard about it or not.
WPS&C HAS TALENT
There can be few events that more epitomise what we stand for than our WPS & C
Has Talent that was held two weeks ago. What a wonderful opportunity it was to:
• showcase the amazing talent we have at the school
• give virtually all the children a chance to compete through the class acts
• raise much needed funds for projects like the netball court (We raised R36 500
in total!)
• give us all, children, parents and teachers an opportunity to socialise and build
team spirit.
I have said it before but it bears repeating, we can only put on events like these
because we have a wonderfully supportive parent body who worked so hard and
donated so generously. A special word of thanks to our ‘never say die’ fundraising
team of Selma Coleman, Anita Breed, Lena mari Marx and Kim Hatjigiannakis who
worked tirelessly to ensure everything ran smoothly and who must take the lion’s share
of the credit for a wonderful evening. They certainly never acted alone and we are also
very grateful to ALL the parents who helped with the acts and who donated so
generously:

and to Lian Naude from Digital Presence for updating the Fundraising website.
EXAM PERIOD: 3 - 14 JUNE
The start of the exam period is now only 2 weeks away. A few reminders:
• The whole school will close at 12h30 for this two week period.
• There will be no school sport (we will be hosting a cross country event
on Friday 7 June but this is voluntary. It is also the start of the weekend
so we encourage our children to participate as there is still plenty of
study time thereafter.)
• Any Grade 4 - 9 child who needs to miss an exam needs a doctors
certificate. The exception would be Eid but I have written separately to
our Muslim parents in this regard. If children are sick but are able to
write their exam, parents may organise with the school to collect their
children once they finish writing.
• Please remind your child to bring study material to school for the next
exam.
THE FINAL WEEK OF TERM
• Please remember that our school closes a week later than the
government schools - Friday 21 June.
• Monday 17 June is a public holiday
• There will be sport as usual in the last week
• School will close at the usual time for this week, except for Friday 21
June when we close at 11h00 and the Aftercare closes at 13h00
RECYCLING AREA
Our recycling area is once again available for use. Please note that the road to
recycling is now a 'dead end' so kindly drive there with caution.
CROSS COUNTRY
Our first cross country event for the season took place at CPUT, D.J. de Villiers
stadium, Wellington and our learners achieved good results. In the cross country
events, our athletes compete against children from eight other schools. The first 3
athletes in each race receive individual certificates and the first 4 athletes in their
gender from one school to finish first, receive a certificate for team competition,
regardless of their position in the race.
Races at venues commence from 15h30 onwards, depending on age. The distance run
is also age dependent and varies from 1km to 4km. Entry fee for races are R5.
A number of our athletes received certificates for their races at CPUT.
Individual certificates were awarded to:
Under 8 age group - Juliet Molenaar – 1st place, Lara Benjamin – 3rd place and Mattys
Breed – 2nd place for under 8’s.
Under 9 age group - Quade Ramus – 2nd place and Natalie Goosen – 2nd place.
Under 10 age group - Luka Breed – 2nd place.
Under 11 age group - Lakhanya Tisana – 1st place and Jack Goosen – 1st place.
Under 12 age group - Charlotte Gandiwa – 1st place, Lucy Molenaar – 2nd place, Jordan
April – 1st place and Matthew Hudson – 2nd place.
Team competition certificates for under 8’s were awarded to Isabella van Zitters, Lara
Benjamin, Izellah Corrigan and Juliet Molenaar.
Team competition certificates for under 11’s were awarded to Francis Wallis, Jamie
van Niekerk, Jack Goosen and Daniel Bristow. Well done to all participants!
A huge thank you to Anita Breed and Karin Corrigan who kindly train our younger
athletes on Friday afternoons as well as Tuesday and Thursday training sessions at
07h15 am, assisting our athletes with breathing techniques and running style. Thank
you also to Mr Aubin who trains our senior athletes.
Our next race takes place today at Slot van die Paarl.
SAVE THE DATE – CROSS COUNTRY AT WPS&C 7 JUNE 2019
For the first time ever, Wellington Preparatory School & College will host a Cross Country
meet on Friday 7 June from 15:30 until 17:30. Please diarise this event! We would really
appreciate parents and learners’ support to ensure this is a fun day. We want to encourage
everyone to participate – if not as a runner, then as a spectator. We are looking for spot
prize sponsors (for example, R50 Spur/Wimpy/Write Shoppe voucher, new toys, movie
tickets, etc) to hand out to learners on the day. We also need senior learners to volunteer
as marshals for the routes. Please get in touch with Heather if your child wants to marshal
or if you are able to sponsor a prize.
NEW SOCCER GOALS
Our new soccer goals have arrived
and will make goal scoring more of a
challenge for our soccer players
from Grade 6 upwards! Thank you
to those parents who participated in
Tania Ndlovu's Zumba and Philoxing
classes as the money raised from
these classes was used to pay for
the goal posts. Our players can't
wait to score their first goal in the
new posts.
SOCCER MATCH REPORTS
Monday 13 May
WPS vs Newton
U/9: Our U/9 players had an excellent match against Newton Primary. We controlled
possession for most of the game and we managed to win the match 2-0. The player of
the match was Quade.
U/11: Our U/11 team got off to a flying start by scoring within the first minute of the
game. Newton managed to score just before the end of the first half. The second half
was very competitive and unfortunately Newton was able to score again and win the
game 2-1. Player of the match was Francis.
U/13: Our U/13 team played against a well organised Newton team. They kept our
defence very busy and were able to score two very good goals. Newton won the game
2-0. Player of the match was Connor Wooding.
Wednesday 15 May
WPS vs Hillcrest
U/9: Our U/9 team played their final match of the season and all of the players had a
great game. The match was evenly contested with both teams playing very well. The
match ended in a draw with Scirocco receiving the player of the match award.
U/11: Our U/11 team had another tough match. Both teams defended excellently and
had very few opportunities to score. Our team won a penalty in the last few minutes of
the game and we were able to score and win the game 1-0. Player of the match was
Jack Goosen.
U/13: Our U/13 team put up a much better performance against Hillcrest. All of our
players did their best and we created many opportunities to score. WPS won the game
3-1. The players of the match were Liam Kenmuir and Jordan April.
NETBALL COURT UPDATE
Our contractors are working hard to complete the
new netball court and in the meantime our girls
are using the field to learn the required netball
skills. We can't wait to start playing on the new
court!
CHESS NEWS
Today, we are playing the last chess match of this term. There is one more match in
the Cape Winelands School League, which will take place in term 3. So far, we have
lost a match against Van Wyksvlei, drawn a match against Huguenot and won a
match against Hillcrest.
The Cupido girls (Caylah Gr 2 and Meghan Gr 4) are playing chess all weekend in the
Winelands Chess individual championship tournament in Mossel Bay. We wish
them the best of luck!
SUPPORTING HEART NPO'S BLANKET DRIVE
Our school has a strong sense of social responsibility and we believe that giving back
to the less fortunate is a vital part of who we are. We are proud to launch the WPS&C
blanket drive in aid of HEART NPO. Between now and the end of the term we will be
collecting new blankets. The blankets can be bought or handmade. If you prefer to
give a donation towards a blanket please send the money to school in an envelope,
clearly marked for this purpose, and we will purchase the blankets on your
behalf. Blankets and donations to be handed to class teachers. Let’s show those less
fortunate than ourselves just how big our school’s ❤ is!
SENSATIONAL SMELLS!
The Grade 4's were treated to a lovely
smelling demonstration on how to
make fizz bombs and bath milkshakes.
Leigh Burger came to our classroom on
Thursday 9 May and explained about
the ingredients and the process of
making these products. The learners
enjoyed learning about making bath
time treats and our classroom has
smelled like apple and soap ever since.
Thank you, Leigh!
