HIGHLIGHTS OF FALL 2013

CURRICULUM NIGHTIn late September, families were invited to OPPS to meet the staff and tour the school building. As always, the children were eager to introduce their families to their teachers and to show everyone their new classrooms. The School Council was in attendance to inform parents about our specific fundraisers, to answer questions and to get to know the families in our school community. It was a really fun evening!

COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSEOn October 16th, the OPPS School Council, in conjunction with Wendat Village Public School and Glad Park Public School, held a Community Open House. During the event, we welcomed a variety of community agencies into our school to share their programs and services with the families of OPPS. Thank you to each of you who were in attendance!

THE BASKETBALL NETS ARE HERE!At long last, the much anticipated basketball nets have been installed at OPPS. The School Council was pleased to be able to fund this endeavour and we are so excited to see them finally arrive! We know that our students are excited as well!

Upcoming Events....

Parent Coffee HourThis is informal time to connect with other OPPS parents. It is held the third Thursday of every month in the OPPS Library. A complete list of the dates can be found on the school’s website. Hope to see you there!

Pita & Pizza LunchesThe School Council continues to offer both pizza and pita lunches on a weekly basis. The next round of orders will be sent out early in the new year. Be sure to check the school’s website for details. These special lunches are always a hit with the kids!

Family Bingo EveningThe Family Bingo Evening is an annual event that we all look forward to here at OPPS! Mark your calendars... this year, the event will take place on February 21, 2014 at 7:00pm! BINGO is always a lot of fun for parents and children alike so plan on attending! As always, there will be a variety of treats available to snack on while you play! We hope to see you all there!

WHAT DOES THE SCHOOL COUNCIL DO?

Each month, our School Council meets to receive good news reports from our school administration, our staff, our student leaders and on occasion, from special guest speakers.

School Council Meetings are also a time that school wide concerns are the focus of discussion. Parents are encouraged to bring items to our School Council Co-Chairs prior to the meeting for inclusion on the agenda. OPPS values the input and dialogue with the parents at meetings and representatives from the school administration and staff are always a part of our meetings.

During these meetings, the School Council also discusses and makes decisions on how to best support our school through the use of funds that are raised.

This year, among other things, the School Council has provided funding for:

A new set of volleyballs for OPPS Jazz teamsSupport for the Forest of Reading programFunding for a new electronic pianoLice checks for every studentResources for two Sensory Rooms at OPPS

CAN I ATTEND SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETINGS?

Absolutely! All parents are welcome to attend a School

Council meeting at any time. The dates and times of each meeting are listed on the school website

and published in the school newsletter.

Every parent is encouraged to take part in the discussion ~ to

give opinions and suggest ideas.However, only voting members

will be asked to approve or decline funding.

All OPPS School Council meetings are held on Monday

evenings at 7:00pm in the school library.
