Newsletter for Students and Parents Friday 27th January 2017 AQUILA ORION PEGASUS PHOENIX CPA COLLEGE VI The Principal writes …… Thank you to parents of Year 9 students who attended Parents Evenings this week. Later this term, the Year 9 options process will begin which will support students in selecting suitable courses for Key Stage 4. Further information, including an invitation to the Year 9 Options Evening on 1st March 2017, will follow in due course but I hope that this week's discussions have helped students to start thinking about their choices. Year 11 students received their Pre-Public Exam (PPE) results this week and, as always, we saw a range of responses - some delighted with very encouraging results, some others disappointed with some of the outcomes. The key message for students was that whilst these results are important, it will be the learning that arises from these results that will be far more important in ensuring greater success this summer. By reviewing exam papers and analysing performance carefully in the coming days and weeks, students and teachers will now identify how they can best make improvements and continue working together to build on current achievements. We look for- ward to capitalising on these results through discussions at Year 11 Parents Evening next Wednesday. Whilst the vast majority of students maintain excellent attendance and punctuality records, we would like to further improve both areas and will be introducing a different approach to dealing with latecomers from next week. Mrs Williams, Deputy Principal, outlines the details later in this Newsletter and students have already been informed - we are grateful for parents' support in these matters. Finally, a little late I know, but I wanted to thank and congratulate students for their generous contributions to our chosen charity, Save the Children, in our Christmas collection and non-uniform day at the end of last term. In total, students raised £1476 which is an impressive achievement and one that will be much appreciated by the recipients of the donation. Punctuality We are grateful to all the parents/carers who ensure students maintain good levels of

attendance and punctuality – this is important for so many reasons. Poor punctuality not

only affects a student’s education and life chances but it also disrupts the learning of others.

All students would benefit from a positive and organised start to their day and so I am

writing to inform you of some changes to the procedures that we will follow should a student

be late to school, starting from Monday 30th January 2017.

Students should be seated in their Tutor rooms by 8.50 am. If a student arrives after this

time, they must register at Student Services where they will be marked in late with the

Attendance Officer, who will issue a “Late to School” slip.

Any student with a “Late to School” slip must attend a 20 minutes lunchtime detention at

1.00 pm in S25 on the same day. Failure to attend this detention will result in an escalation

of the sanction.

If there is a genuine reason for their lateness, students should bring a note from home to

this effect and the late slip will not be issued if we consider the reason to be acceptable.

We understand it can be difficult to make medical or dental appointments and that some

appointments may take all day, although we would ask you to avoid appointments during

the school day wherever possible.

Therefore, lateness due to these appointments must be evidenced with a note, letter, or

appointment card from the surgery. These will then be recorded as authorised absences.

We suggest making these appointments late afternoon if possible.

Parents/carers will continue to receive an email via Intouch informing them if students are

late to school. The Parent Portal is also a useful tool to monitor punctuality.

We close our registers at 9.20 am and if a student arrives after this time this is marked as

an unauthorised absence (U code). If the student is late after the close of registers more

than six times parents/carers could be liable to receive a Penalty Notice.

Thank you in advance for your support. Should you have any concerns regarding

punctuality, please speak the student’s Tutor in the first instance.

Collegiate came fighting back, winning their last two games. With this the girls were in the

running to reach the finals.

After an anxious overnight wait, the results were in and emailed to Miss Mackenzie.
