Newsletter Issue No. 16 - Week ending 9th June 2017 TANABATA FESTIVAL This week we celebrated Tanabata - the star festival that is held every year in Japan. On Tanabata, people write wishes on small pieces of coloured paper called tanzaku and hang them on bamboo trees. These become beautiful wish trees. On the following day, the decorated trees are floated on a river or in the ocean and burned as an offering. There are many celebrations all over Japan, which also include parades, food stalls, colourful decorations, and fireworks. Sensei Phil pulled together a day of cultural treats. The students were involved in many activities which included the art of Ikebana - flower arranging, the Performing Arts – theatre, drama, popular culture and storytelling, Japanese Calligraphy, Cuisine including Bento Boxes (thanks Garden Café!) and Sport and Leisure – a Judo demonstration from five Black Belts. This follows the work done by students prep to grade 6 in their Japanese lessons this year. I would like to thank the visitors to the school who contributed to this successful day and the organisation that assisted the smooth running of this cultural day.

TANABATA FESTIVAL

This week we celebrated Tanabata - the star festival that is held every year in Japan. On Tanabata, people write

wishes on small pieces of coloured paper called tanzaku and hang them on bamboo trees. These become beautiful

wish trees. On the following day, the decorated trees are floated on a river or in the ocean and burned as an

offering. There are many celebrations all over Japan, which also include parades, food stalls, colourful decorations,

and fireworks.

Sensei Phil pulled together a day of cultural treats.

The students were involved in many activities which included the art of Ikebana - flower arranging, the

Performing Arts – theatre, drama, popular culture and storytelling, Japanese Calligraphy, Cuisine including

Bento Boxes (thanks Garden Café!) and Sport and Leisure – a Judo demonstration from five Black Belts. This

follows the work done by students prep to grade 6 in their Japanese lessons this year.

I would like to thank the visitors to the school who contributed to this successful day and the organisation that

assisted the smooth running of this cultural day.

KITCHEN GARDEN PROGRAM

Hello Everyone! or should I say Vsem Privet!

Last week in cooking we had an abundance of

beetroot so we travelled to Russia and made Borscht.

This soup is perfect for the cooler weather, and when

the bright red soup is eaten with cheesy herb soufflé

toasties, a crisp apple and broccoli salad, oven roasted

spiced chickpeas and a tahini yoghurt topping, it was

hard to beat.

The students came away with slightly pinker hands

than when they went in and the lovely spread was

eaten heartily.

Til next time, keep cooking!

AUTHORS CLUB

Last week at Authors Club we had a

number of students sharing work from

the Writer’s Notebooks. This is a

strategy that many classes are using to

capture interesting moments and to

practice writing skills to then apply

when drafting new pieces. There was a high level of

engagement from the group today as the writing

contained many interesting words and phrases. Well

done to this week’s Authors.

Last week we had: Brayden, Scarlett, Shaylah, Joshua,

Daniel, Ella, Layla, Emily, Nikita, Molly, Madeline, Kasey

and Janaya.

Here is an example from Authors Club:

“Stacks of money piled up in front of my eyes. It was a

cold, dark winter’s night and I had snuck into the bank. I

gazed up at the pillar of money. My eyes glistened like

stars. I looked at my watch. 6:58. The bankers would be

here soon. I swung a leather bag over my shoulder and

started stuffing it with money. I slid my beanie over my face

and made my way back home. I climbed through the

window of my bedroom. I tossed the bag under my bed and

snuggled under the doona. “Good to be home”, I whispered

and fell into a deep sleep.” Daniel, Grade 4.

LATE ARRIVALS

A reminder that if your child arrives at school after

8.55am, you must sign them in at the Office.

Alternatively, you can send a note with your child, or

SMS our Absences number (0437 294 856)

This reduces the number of calls the office have to
