Cooking up a storm for those special meals with lots of family and friends. I continue these traditions by sharing recipes, time and laughs with friends and family. Along the way, my sharing of traditions has taken on a bit of a twist - like pierogi made with a jerk chicken! Sharing goes both ways. I find quilting is about tradition and sharing and learning. Traditional turns into modern which turns into art which turns into the next big thing. With sharing comes new ways of looking at how to piece, how to put colours together, how to design. This sharing of old and new, the yin and the yang, right brain and left brain all leaves me with a vision of amazing quilts in my head just waiting to come out. So many quilts, sew little time! Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season, and a joyous New Year! I hope to see you at the first meeting of 2018 on Tuesday, January 16. *** Check out the gorgeous Viewers Choice winners from our fantastic show, A Celebration of Quilts XIII, on page 7. President’s MessageTraditions! The holiday season always takes me back to the traditions I grew up with.

PROGRAMTuesday, January 16 at 7 p.m.Group QuiltsElaine Theriault http://crazyquilteronabike.blogspot.ca/

How about some local talent to start off 2018? The indomitable Elaine Theriault will entertain us with her spirited presentation featuring the ups and downs of creating Group Quilts. Her talk will also include a stunning trunk show with a wide range of quilts.

Some of you may remember Elaine from when she was a member of York Heritage Quilters Guild - she was "Quilter of the Month" in January 2006! Elaine is a teacher, writer, pattern designer and long-arm quilter who is completely obsessed with quilting.

Elaine’s Tech Tips column (published in A Needle Pulling Thread magazine) is now available online in e-book format at QUILTSocial.com. She also guest blogs for QUILTSocial.com where she reviews Husqvarna Viking sewing machines.

When not quilting, she enjoys spending time with her two dogs, Lexi and Murphy or cycling across the country.

SAQA Trunk ShowAlso at the January meeting, we are privileged to have a travelling art exhibit featuring the work of SAQA members (Studio Art Quilt Associates). Brought to us by YHQG member Tracey Lawko, this exhibit of small art quilts will amaze and inspire you!

LOOKING AHEAD ...Tuesday, February 20 at 7 p.m.Community Quilt Night & DemosJoin us for our annual community quilting evening. This year, there are lots of options. Members are invited to bring their own project to work on, and we encourage you to exchange tips and techniques with those sharing your table.Refreshments will be provided.

As well, there will be an opportunity to learn a few new techniques or brush up on others. We proudly present these demos:

WORKSHOPS

Please Note: It is important for members to commit by early January for the workshops with Bethanne Nemesh. The reason for this is that there is extensive preparation required (by Bethanne) for the “Devil in the Details” workshop and a workbook that (if you want it) must be shipped from the U.S. well in advance.

COMMUNITY QUILTING NEWSThe number of items turned in at the Community Quilting table continues to astound. Pieced tops from CQ kit: • Bev Moffett; Linda Hales; Margaret Whitehead; Helgard Koch; Linda Robitaille

Bringing Comfort

Our guild continues to support newcomers to Canada. Here are a few examples of the warmth they have generated.

Recently, I was made aware of a family with five children (ages 12 to 19) from the Philippines who joined their mother here in Toronto. There were smiles & hugs all around when they were presented with a quilt for each family member, including Mom.

A Syrian family that is being sponsored by Fairlawn United Church will be arriving in Toronto by the end of December, and they will find their beds adorned with five beautiful quilts (see photos on page 5).

Ten comfort quilts were given to the Hazel Burns Hospice. This organization was brought to my attention by Kathy Campbell, a CQ volunteer..

Twenty quilts were delivered by Anne McLaughlin to Sojourn House, whose mission statement is “To provide a safe place and create an inclusive environment where refugees are supported and empowered to pursue a life in Canada”.

And, for the fourth year, CQ gave two sets of three quilts (an adult, a child’s & a baby) to Sistering, a wonderful organization that offers support, care, meals and a safe haven for women and children in downtown Toronto. Each year they host two Holiday Parties at which donated items, including quilts from YHQG, are given out in a “free raffle”. Their executive director reports that the quilts are highly prized by the recipients. Judy Messenger, Jane Cramer and Jacinta Bennell (who made two of the six) gave generously of their time, talents & materials to make these quilts. Any member interested in making a quilt for this project is asked to contact me, Wendy Dines, CQ facilitator.

Quilts for Auctions

The following charities and not-for-profit organizations received a quilt to assist in their fundraising efforts:

Assaulted Women’s Helpline, Breast Cancer Support Fund, Mom to Mom Africa, Macroglobulinemia Foundation of Canada, Humewood House, St Clare Inn, Toronto Intergenerational Partnership (TIGP) and the Catholic Women’s League.

Some of these organizations reached out to us to secure a donation. However, most recipient organizations came to our attention because a guild member approached CQ asking for a quilt donation. If you are a member of a not for profit organization that works in the area of supporting women, children and families, please contact me to see if your organization meets the Guild’s parameters for just such a donation.

A Friendly Reminder About the Quilt Sandwiches

a) For the quilting, the rule of thumb is to have the stitching lines no more than 4 inches apart. “If in doubt, add another line of stitching.”

b) Just as the Guild meetings are a scent-free zone, please apply this principle to the handling of quilt sandwiches. Unknown recipients may be sensitive to perfumes, home deodorizers and incense.

c) Please inspect your work – front and back – when finished to be sure that stitch tension is correct and loose threads have been trimmed.

d) Inspect the sandwich for any pet hairs – a quick fluff in a cool dryer will remove them.e) We thank you for the return of the safety pins.

Community Quilting appreciates your generosity to those in need.

Carolyn FloodIt is with a heavy heart that I report the death of my friend and fellow fibre artist Carolyn Flood, on December 4, 2017. Carolyn was a member of YHQG for many years and served on the executive as program chair. She was a familiar face at Quiltmakers and later on taught classes at Cockadoodle Quilts. She sold her vibrant art pieces and art cards on Etsy. She was a member of SAQA and a key instigator of Hillcrest Village Fibreworks, a textile arts group in the St. Clair West and Bathurst area that has presented exhibits in local venues annually since 2006. The group plans to pay tribute to Carolyn with a showcase of her work at their upcoming show, June 2 - 16 at Galleria 814.
