One Day with Najaf Sadigov

The day of February 17, 2014 became turning point on my career path. On this day, I started working for the Baku 2015 European Games Operating Committee (BEGOC) as a Regional Coordinator. I will talk about this special day of mine and consequences of the decision over the change of workplace.

February 16, I’m excited about new job, new environment, new colleagues, and so on forth. Will my expectations be met? Have I made right decision? How are they going to introduce me to the organization? Too many questions on my mind .

I wake up a bit late because BEGOC is located few km from my house and there is usually no traffic jam on the road. It takes me 15 minutes to get to work. First nice impression of the new job!

Wow, they have a free of charge underground parking place! This should be an indispensable part of every organization, if the boss wants to make his/her employees happy early in the morning . Second nice impression of the new job!

Everyone welcomes me, in the main entrance, with smiling face and now I’m certain that I’ll have friendly and congenial colleagues. Third nice impression of the new job!

Now I’m supposed to go one of the auditoriums, where BEGOC conducts induction session for new starters. I get acquainted with the Inaugural European Games and sports in general. Before, I had no idea about the organization of sporting events. I didn’t know that sporting events involve that much effort and energy. I used to be part of the international events on education, science and culture, but no sport. This field seems much more exciting. Fourth nice impression of the new job!

I cannot focus my attention on the screen any longer…maybe I’m hungry? When the lunch time will arrive; it’s 11:30. Oh no, have to wait one and a half hour. Suddenly, I heard that here lunch starts at 12:00. Great!! Food, dessert and drinks are served by Buta Catering and it is free of charge as wellJ Fifth nice impression of the new job!

Induction session ends; it’s time to go to my own desk. Wow, everything – my desk, PC, outlook and other accounts are already installed! This might seem tiny things for anyone, but it shows how the company approaches and treats its employee. It really made me happy! Sixth nice impression of the new job!

I start talking to my managers, all of whom are foreigners. Here, I see respect between employee and employer instead of soviet style hierarchy. Seventh nice impression of the new job!

I am informed that we are going to have Novruz celebrations and other corporate events, which I

Alumni Story with Shahla Abbekirova

1. As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? It can sound a bit strange, but since then I was telling everyone that I would become an ambassador one day. ))) For sure, nobody knows what is going to happen in future, but my dream is always there)

2. What’s the #1 most played song on your music player?

Probably “The Show must go on” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen;

“Xəәyalpəәrəәst” by Yuxu and “Aç balaca qanadlarını” by Coldunya. Definitely there

are lots of others; as for me music is something more than just music)

3. What is your favorite time of day? Why?

My favorite time during the day is when I can stop thinking, relax and enjoy that

moment. 4. What is your favorite quote?

As there is no ultimate truth, there is neither ultimate song, nor ultimate quote for me; our preferences always depend on circumstances. For now I can remember two of such quotes:

a) Treat the people the way you would like to be treated. b) “if you wish to be happy you should have still conscience” – don’t

remember exactly from where I read it but it is something from “sad but true” series. I still fail to apply it)

have never experienced in my previous job. Eights nice impression of the new job!

Finally, it is 6 PM. I can leave the workplace at 6 PM without getting permission from anyone as I did in my previous job. Ninth nice impression of the new job!

Now, I have to share all my nice impressions with my fiancée Ulviyya .

5. How would you define yourself in three words?

- Pessimistically optimistic - Honest - Hanging out on my own wave

6. What was the most important influence of ADA on you?

Improved writing and analytical skills

7. What has been your biggest challenge at ADA?

Finance class during the second semester

8. What was your best memory at ADA?

Probably our first study trip, which was to Georgia and our first performance with Tomas Gerbasio during Talent Show, when we were singing “Ain’t now sunshine”

9. What do you like best about your job?

What I like the most is that there is a lot of stuff still to learn.

10. What is your biggest success up until

now?

I think for now it is too early to talk about my success at work. I am too young to be an irreplaceable part of any mechanism. Hope one day I will be able to tell some (one?) or change my perception of myself to appreciate what I am doing.

11. What are your career plan for the next 5

years?

This is the beauty of being a diplomat, you don’t know where you are going to be “the next day”, so in general, I don’t build career plans, but instead try to improve my knowledge.

2

12. How difficult it is to be a female

diplomat? What additional challenges do you face which are not a big deal for your male colleagues?

I don’t think that there is any particular difficulty that women face, except for those that in some point a woman, does not matter diplomat or not, should start her “ grace period” called family and manage to effectively combine two sides of the coin.

13. What would be your wishes to ADA?

I wish ADA to keep the quality while increasing the quantity and be able to make every member of already not so small community feel what it means to be a part of this institution, as I believe that ADA is doing a great job.

P.S. I wish best of luck to all current and future alumnus of ADA University
