Our school term has started off really smoothly and we are looking forward to a fun filled term of
learning. The sunshades are up and the sunhats are on! Last week the year 5-8 electives kicked off
successfully and the Tui syndicate started their swimming programme at Kilbirnie pool. The
sunshades were hung in the break and we would like to remind you all children need to be
wearing a blue or red hat during term 1 and 4. These can be purchased through the school office.
Here are a couple of photos from the first week of our electives:

What’s coming up
Tinkering and coding in the hall.
Building Update
Since our last communications we have learnt the newly renovated Takahe block will be finished
in early December, at this stage we are aiming for the 9th December. The joinery and windows are
in. Here are a couple of photos I took yesterday when we had our site meeting, as you can see, it
is coming along well. It feels really spacious and I am looking forward to seeing the Takahe
children in there.
When this is complete we will bless our new learning space and we will invite you to come and
have a look.
We have been working on our logistics of moving the children when this is block is complete. Part
of this will entail Southbase Construction moving their site compound onto the double court for
stage 3 of the redevelopment. They will be blocking the Harrison Street vehicle access off as part
of their construction site and we will have access from Harrison Street via the new pedestrian
access.
There will be some movement of classes when this stage is finished. Firstly, we will move the Takahe
children into this new learning space and then the Kiwi children will move into the hall. Room 19
(new entrants) will move into the school library for the last few weeks of the term. The prefabs (Kiwi
Village) will then become the new building site.
Landscaping Update
We have started our landscaping project down in the tree area. This is progressing well and we
are going to all the proceeds from the quiz towards this. Thanks to Chris Logan and his Outsiders
team for helping us out with this project.
Kapa Haka
Tomorrow we have approximately 160 children attending the Wellington Kapa Haka Festival at St
Patricks College. We are very proud of our mokopuna and the progress they have made with
Kapa Haka. Thank you to Matt Breach for leading our Kapa Haka, we really appreciate it. We wish
them the best in their performance.
Classes for 2020
To help us, if your child is not returning to Brooklyn in 2020 or if you have a child starting school in
2020, please could you advise me in writing to help us with our planning.
Next year the Moa, Takahe and Kiwi syndicates will be in learning environments and they will be
taught by all the teachers in the syndicate at various times. They will still have a home (whanau)
teacher that will have the responsibility for this group and will be your point of contact. Our staff
spend a considerable amount of time putting much thought into what whanau group your child
will be placed in for 2020. We are not able to accommodate parent requests, and I ask that you
do not contact the Team Leader or Teacher about requesting a specific teacher unless there is
an exceptional circumstance.
Athletics
Central Zone Athletics are coming up on the 5th November. Notices for the children who have
qualified for this event will come home over the next week. The date for this postponement 12
November.
National Shake Out Drill
We took part in the National Shakeout to practice our
earthquake drill last week. This went smoothly and it was a
chance for us to practice our procedures.
Lost Property
A reminder to check the orange lost property bin located near the entrance to the office for any
of your child’s missing clothing. Any clothing not collected by this Friday will be given away to
charity.
Tui Grandparent morning
We welcome Grandparents/Great-grandparents (or other elders/relatives) to an open morning
on Tuesday 29 October 9.00-10.00am (after Labour weekend). This will be an opportunity for
grandparents to see learning in action, participate alongside their grandchild and share what
school was like for them.
We appreciate that some children will not have a Grandparent or other person who can attend.
Please let us know in advance so that we can organise for a buddy to pop. Children can get very
upset if they feel like they are missing out so we would appreciate it if you could discuss this with
your child in advance.
Tahi Rua Toru Tech Tournament
Tahi Rua Toru Tech is a digital challenge for schools from years 1-8. Some room 14 learners took
part in the Discovery Challenge which involves a series of unplugged computer science activities
that helps students learn about computational thinking and how computers work. Below are some
photos from the day and a short story from a some of the children involved
It was nerve-wracking, it was exciting, it was amazing!
We were at the bus stop leaping with excitement with our brains filled with joy. We weren't prepared for the challenge ahead of us. We sprinted up to the entrance of the lime green bus and leapt into our seats waving our snapper card at the machine. We zoomed down the hill leaving Brooklyn School behind us.
10 minutes later... The bus came to a halt at Lambton Quay and we ran off the bus to get to Plimmer Steps then ran up into the elevator in Plimmer Towers. We arrived early and as we entered the room we saw the sight that was Wine gums and tic tacs. We ate and talked before we started the challenges (Parity Magic, Binary and Sorting Network). This was where the competition began. Who would win?
We had 2 practises and a timed finale of each activity which were: Binary: The language that computers speak Sorting Network: How the computers sort data rapidly
Parity Magic: How a computer fixes data
The judges left as Digital Dan interviewed us about how we felt about the tournament. We waited for 15 minutes before the judges returned. There were mixed feelings among the group. Some happy, competitive and sad. The suspense in the room was unbearable with people digging their nails into their head and yelling. After what felt like an eternity the judges finally came out. They did a lot of silly talk like that the winner was in the room. Finally, {drumroll please} “The winner is The Brooklyn Binary Burrito Brains!!” The group erupted with cheer as the BBBBs jumped up and down with happiness. They then got presented with medals as regional winners. The Brooklyn Binary Burrito Brains will be attending the National Championships on December 5.
