One focus of the training is utilizing Partners in Care congregations.
“We recognize that the original social service in the community is the
local congregation,” says Lee. It is recognizing members who need
support and connecting them with a local faith community.
Congregations and faith communities from all counties in Maryland
have established themselves as Partners in Care congregations. They
have aided guard members with groceries, counseling, and a human
connection. KIUMC has been identified as a Partners in Care
congregation in which they have entered a covenant with the
MDARNG to be a source of aid and spiritual support to guardsmen in
the area.
Kent Island United Methodist Church hosted
the Maryland Army National Guard Chaplain
Training Conference from Aug 30-31. Twelve
chaplains from various denominations
attended this training, which was led by the
Joint Forces Headquarters/ State Chaplain CH
(COL) Wm. Sean Lee. Representatives from the
National Guard Bureau and the State
Headquarters visited and trained with the
chaplains. United Methodist Endorsed
Chaplains hold the majority within the
MDARNG Chaplain Corps.
If you’d like more information about Partners in Care
or Army Chaplaincy, contact the MDARNG State
Chaplain’s office at 410-576-6124.

SUPPORTING OUR MISSIONARIES
Congo Partnership
Cataract Surgery Mission
Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. In countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, cataracts not only rob adults of their own independence, but their children’s independence as well, as they are left to lead their parents around. Poverty is the end result. The Central Congo Partnership is working tirelessly to reverse this trend, having recently completed their 2017 Cataract Surgery Mission. In Diengenga, a tiny village with no running water and only a generator to provide electricity, an ophthalmologist from Kaiser Permanente was joined by an amazing team of surgeons, nurses, and techs. Together they were able to treat the scores of people who streamed in for treatment, some of whom traveled hundreds of miles on foot to be seen. People from tribes embroiled in conflict waited, slept, and ate together as pastors ministered to the anxious crowd. In all, over 2000 people were treated. It only costs $100 to sponsor a patient in order to give them the gift of sight…a gift we take for granted every day as we watch the sun set, read our Bibles, and gaze upon the faces of those we love. If you would like to learn more or feel led to give, visit http://www.congo-mission.org/our-projects/cataract-mission-2017/
Are you between the ages of 18 and 30? Come be
a part of our Young Adult Ministry! Starting
October 1st, the Young Adults will be meeting on Sunday evenings at 7:00 p.m. at Dunkin’ Donuts.

Kent island
tornado relief Our church family came together as the body of Christ in a most
spectacular fashion after the Kent Island Tornado ripped through the
area in late July. Donations of food, water, and supplies poured into
the church, all to be sorted and delivered by volunteers. People pulled
on their work gloves and got to work in the wreckage without
complaint, and tens of thousands of dollars were given to the Kent
Island Tornado Relief Fund to help those whose homes and lives were
turned upside down by the storm.
To date, we have collected over $55,000 for the Tornado fund, from
individuals, businesses, and churches of all sizes, from both the Eastern
and Western Shores. Nearly $44,000 has been distributed, allowing us to
provide help to 38 families through funds alone. Many more have been
assisted with food and monetary gift cards. Applications are still coming
into the church office on a regular basis, as families continue to work on
rebuilding their lives. THANK YOU to all who have given their money and
time to reach out and touch the lives of others.

KIUMC NEWSLETTER October/November 2017
On Saturday September 9, 2017 John Roberts, general manager of Severn Graphics, arrived at Bobby and Cathy Timms’ home to put the finishing touches on the graphics for the exterior of the Celebrate Recovery Awareness trailer. The sides of the trailer have touching words which were chosen by the CR leadership team: “In memory of the lives we’ve lost…And the lives we long to save!” Above these words is the CR graphic of a person set free from any hurt, hang-up or habit, which is the mission of Celebrate Recovery.
The back of the trailer was conceived by JR Faulkner and it says “On the road to recovery.” John Roberts affixed the pictures and words to the exterior of the Awareness trailer. He has a heart for parents and the children and adults who become trapped by addiction, a hang-up or a hurt.
The CR team is so grateful to John Roberts. He’s an angel who helped make the trailer inspiration a reality. Bobby Timms also insisted that these words be put on the trailer: “Paid for by the people of KIUMC.” We feel the love and support of the KIUMC congregation and its pastors. Many “angels” surround us as we try to make a difference in struggling peoples’ lives. Thank you all! By Sally Boden Thank you all!
CR Angel(s)
The CR team is praying for God’s guidance and direction as we take the Awareness trailer out to communities in an effort to educate parents, friends, and family members who are concerned about the choices, health, and well being of their loved ones. The interior of the trailer is a bedroom in which several items used by addicts or drug abusers are hidden. Items that appear harmless and ordinary can be devices used to cause great harm, even death. Given “probable cause,” guardians must overcome denial and family pride and take action.

KIUMC NEWSLETTER October/November 2017
What a great night to celebrate and thank all
who helped to support Roots Youth Ministry!
Students from the High School and Middle School shared about the projects they worked on, the relationships they developed, and how the residents impacted them. Some said they were “shocked by the willingness of the residents wanting to help even in their life situations." Some shared that they wanted “to go back and continue those relationships with their residents." Some just loved the closeness of the youth group and how they became a family that week. To hear the hearts of each youth truly shows the growth that has happened to each of them in the last few months. They are a union of students who all have the same beliefs and want to support each other with Christ as their Savior. Luke 24:13-35 We are all on the Road!

Acolytes In Training Pastor Mark and Brenda Saia-Alyea visited the Sunday School
classrooms a few weeks ago to invite the fourth, fifth, and middle
school classes to participate in the acolyte program. Eight students
signed up to join the ranks!
Our head usher at 11:00, Steve Bowling, conducted the training on
September 24th. Many thanks to Steve, and also to Patti Boone for
arranging a pizza lunch for our newest acolytes!
We are blessed and grateful to have Pastor Mark, Pastor Amor,
and Pastor Bobby serving at KIUMC. During the month of
October, please extend your gratitude to our Pastors.
Acknowledgement of our appreciation will be during all services
on October 8th when we present a small gift of appreciation to all
Pastors. On Sunday, October 15th we will have a time of
celebration, food, and fellowship in the Fellowship Hall after the
8:00 and 9:30 services. We are asking the congregation from the
11:00 service to please come early and join us after the 9:30
service. We will have a card basket available as well, if you feel so
led. God has truly blessed the body of Christ here at KIUMC.
October is Pastor Appreciation Month!

K.I.S.S. – Next gathering: SPECIAL NEW DATE for OCTOBER:
Sat, Oct 14th 11a-2p / Fellowship Hall
PACKING PARTY / Shoeboxes provided
KIUMC is very blessed to have four dedicated and
conscientious volunteers who count and organize the
offerings from the three Sunday morning services.
For the past several years Karen Bardwell, Patti Boone,
Donna Guilford, and Colleen Thomas have served as
our “counters” who work behind the scenes in this
extremely important and vital ministry in our church.
Volunteers You Can Count On
Every week you can find two of these ladies in
their private, secure little room in the church
office organizing Sunday’s receipts. They are
especially grateful for those in our congregation
who faithfully use their envelopes and clearly
mark on the envelopes how the contribution is
to be designated – things that make their task
so much easier. When you see these ladies,
please thank them for all they do!

Home Gatherings
Have you made it to a Transitions Home Gathering yet? If not, you’re missing out—not just on food, fun, and fellowship, but on a great opportunity to get to know Pastor Mark and other folks in our church and community, but to share ideas and information about KIUMC! But don’t worry, you still have another chance to take part. Our Romancoke Area Home Gathering will take place on Thursday, October 19th at 7pm, at the home of Steve and Cheri Sweet (102 Little Neck Road in Stevensville).
We’d like to thank all of those wonderful folks who have
hosted our previous Home Gatherings: Kevin and Dawn Kintop;
Annette Potts and Rick and Elaine Cira; and Mike and Susan
Phillips!
Early Response Training
Would you like to take a more active role in disaster relief? KIUMC will be hosting an Early Response Training (ERT) event on
Saturday, October 7, 2017, from 8:30 am-4:30 pm. Early Response Teams, while not first responders, are an integral part of
relief in the early days after a disaster, as they seek to provide a caring Christian presence as well as physical assistance. In this
training, participants will learn the basics of disaster response, including how to stabilize and secure homes safely and how to
work effectively with survivors and others on the response teams. This class is required for the basic ERT UMCOR
identification badge.
The cost of the class is $35, payable the day of the event with cash or check. If you are interested, please don’t delay!
Preregistration is required by Thursday, October 5th. Visit our website at http://www.kiumc.org/umcor-ert-training.html to
sign up. Please contact Pastor Amor Woolsey at [email protected] or Liz Schilling at [email protected] for more information.
