VBS this year was a great success - everyone from the
children to the volunteers had a terrific time, and we
learned a lot about trusting in God. Each day the
children had a Bible Story about Daniel, followed by
music, craft, snack and games all relating to the day's
theme.
A big focus this year was on "God Sightings." During
the daily Bible lesson teachers encouraged the
children to talk about what God sightings they saw
each day. Around the two VBS bulletin boards in the
church you will see the recording of both the children
and our volunteer sightings. It was amazing to be
reminded of the little things we may forget to give thanks for-such as a flower blooming or a
neighbor being kind.
Many thanks to all of our volunteers - there were more than
SEVENTY! We would not be able to put on such a wonderful
week without you all. We served over 140 children - what a
blessing!
Locally, we collected food items from the shopping list for the
Backpack Meals for Kids ministry, which serves children at
risk for hunger in all of Queen Anne's County by providing
single serving foods for 3 meals plus snacks when school
meals are not available. This year we collected 17 HUGE
bags of food!
Globally millions of children suffer from malnutrition due to food insecurity. Monetary donations
collected during Vacation Bible School supported a new ministry which helps to fight hunger in a
rural village in Costa Rica. The Rio Cuarta Meals for Kids program is staffed by volunteers which
helps to keep the annual cost per child at $100. This year we collected $1056.18.

Church Is a Team Sport
Most sports teams have a star player. Get the ball to him and he’ll
score. Get him up at bat with two men on base and he’ll hit them
home. The sports commentators keep extensive statistics on each
player that they’ll pull out during a lull in the play. It’s all about
the numbers — each person playing to advance his own career,
to increase his averages – at least that’s the way it seems
sometimes.
But once in a while you see a team that plays together with a kind
of magic. It’s not about one person scoring big, but it’s every
team member doing his utmost to move the team forward to win
the game – to get the ball across the line, to score.
Each player on the field or in the court has a role to play. And
when each plays that role well and aggressively — keeping his
eye on the ball – the whole team benefits. When one player just
goes through the motions, the team is crippled. And if a key
member of the team is injured – or just doesn’t show up for the
game – the whole team suffers. The team fails to score.
A healthy church has a lot in common with a finely oiled sports
team. Church shouldn’t be just a spectator sport with a few
players entertaining the crowd. Church relies on each person
actively doing what he or she does best. Church is a team sport.
Let me ask you: what’s your role in your congregation? What are you doing to move the ball forward?
What have you been asked to do that might further your effectiveness as a willing servant of Christ!
Church, it’s time to suit up together! Game on!

churches mission. Check out these opportunities below-we’d love to have you join our team!

people forward for communion, and other needs that may arise during worship.
Please contact Brenda Saia-Alyea at [email protected].
Grow Up Focus Area Is In Need!
If you are interested, just know that it is not necessary to serve every Sunday-if
you would like to help once a month that would be great! We appreciate all of
our volunteers who help make our services run so seamlessly.

Updates from Our
Healing Ministry Team
Friday evening, July 6th, the Kent Island UMC Healing Ministry led a healing service at the “In His
Arms” Church in Kennedyville, MD. Other area churches were invited and several people from the
Rock Hall and Chestertown UM churches were also in attendance. Music was presented by Donnie
and Lisa Usilton of the “In His Arms” Church who are also members of our healing team. Instead of
a sermon, six people shared their testimonies of how they came to know the Lord. Thirty people were
in attendance to hear the message, to receive communion, and to receive healing prayer. God
certainly was present and He blessed all who were there!

The 2018 Annual Carnival is now in the rear view
mirror and ahead of us is the Fall Festival. We
celebrate the success of the carnival, not in
monetary goals but in Kingdom building. These
outreach activities are not intended as fund raisers.
We seek the least, the lost and the lonely. We seek
to share the Good News that Christ is our Savior
and He is coming again. Amen!
It seems as if the rain will never stop. Rain certainly
played a role in the carnival but it did not stop the
success. As you recall we had to move the “tent”
service and community meal indoors on Sunday.
Despite the relocation, it was a wonderful day with
robust worship and fellowship. Unfortunately we
had to cancel the last day of the carnival on
Sunday and we had to close down early two nights
due to lightning. Nevertheless the carnival served
countless members of the community. Smiles were
contagious (especially with beautiful face
painting), laughter and joy abounded with the
children. Food and drink were abundant
(Celebrate Recovery team sold hundreds of
lemonades to the point they ran out of cups!). We
established a connection with the local Latino
church. And music, our second language, not only
entertained us but inspired and moved us every
evening.
…
Kent Island United Methodist Church is a very
generous body of Christ. We gave away over 400
tickets and meals to the less fortunate. Many,
many of our church body showed up to serve and
love the community. Proverbs 19:17 says “If you
help the poor, you are lending to the LORD- and
he will repay you”. Friends, we serve the
community because He commands it. I want to
personally thank each and every one who
contributed in any way, be it time, talent, treasure,
witness, prayers or presence. God is repaying us
every day. We are blessed and will use the
blessings to continue to serve the community. Oh
yeah, despite it not being a fund-raiser, and the
rain dampening the events, we raised over $11,000
to be put to good use to Grow Out again in service
to our magnificent Lord.
Please mark your calendars for the Fall Festival. October 27th, 11 AM-4 PM, followed by Trunk or Treat. We
will be recruiting servants in the upcoming months. Ideas or comments on how to increase or improve our
outreach in the community are always welcomed.

Just checking in to see if you have missed the delicious
Connections dinners on Wednesday nights these past two
months? If so, I have great news for you that you don’t
have to wait much longer.
Beginning Wednesday September 5th at 6pm Connections
dinners will return. During this first dinner we will also have
signups for our new Adult classes. We will continue to serve
well balanced meals that the whole family will enjoy. A
great deal for $10.00 for a family and $4.00 for a single meal.
I want to be sure we have a variety of groups to prepare
meals from September to May, so I’m reaching out to all
that have interest in taking one or more of these
Wednesdays. Let me know in person, by email, text or call.
I’m looking forward to a great year.

We are back from Costa Rica!!! We cannot wait to share all of our stories and the fun that we had with the children and families in the Bribri Reservation. Just like last year students will be given the opportunity to share all that they did and the things they learned while serving others. The only difference is we be doing that during worship services on August 26th. Yet again our Youth Ministry will be taking over services and we would love for you to be there! Last time was such a blessing to the youth and the leaders who work with them. Hearing their stories and knowing that God is making a difference in their lives is all that we could every pray for. JOIN US AUGUST 26th at 8:00, 9:30 and/or 11:00am services
Repairs for the churches roof began at the end
of July! The total estimated cost for the repairs
was $82,000, with the insurance paying up to
$58,000. By the grace of God we were able to
raise the needed $23,500!
We thank you all endlessly for your support and
prayers! Keep an eye on our Facebook for
updates about the progress of the roof.
