LEST WE FORGET

From the Principal | Mr Damien Carlton

Return to Term 2 and Remote Learning: Returning to school 'remotely', with students and teachers being online with each other, seemed strange and foreign. However we are adapting quickly and our students are to be highly commended for the way they have been accepting and responding to this new form of educational delivery.

I extend our huge thanks to parents and carers for their ready assistance in supporting their children who are learning at home.

There have been changes to our original staged return of students to school. The most significant change is that all Year 12 students will return to school on Monday 4 May. Year 12 students and their families have been provided with further details associated with their return this week.

As previously advised, the College is open for families who need to send their other children to school if they cannot be supervised at home.

In Week 3 starting from Monday 11 May students from Years 7-11 will start to return to school one allocated day per week. A timetable will be communicated via email next week. I am sure you can appreciate that the process of developing a phased return to face-to-face learning, whilst considering distancing rules, is a challenging task with many factors to be considered including our current site restrictions. There may be further changes announced by the government that impact on how our plan might unfold. We will respond accordingly, adjust our plans, and communicate this with you.

If you need to contact any staff member at the College, please correspond via their email or phone the College office on 9548 4000.

We look forward to seeing Year 12 on Monday 4 May and indeed all our students as they return over the coming weeks.

Anzac Day - Lest We Forget: Normally on ANZAC Day, even in the school holidays, our College students would be out in full force, involved in marches and ceremonies in their local areas.

Annually this is a wonderful opportunity for all students to step forward to represent the College and support the broader community in one of our most important national remembrance days.

We emphasise at Bosco College how important it is that we honour all those Australians who have made valiant sacrifices under our nation's flag and especially those who have risked their lives and lost their lives in service to our country.

With current COVID-19 restrictions in place, we were so proud of the students and families who rose at dawn last Saturday to participate in candle holding giving witness to the courage, endurance and sacrifice made by the men and women of our defence forces. This was done outside their homes - on verandahs, driveways and front footpaths.

2 TERM 2 - WEEK 1 GAUDIUM ET SPES | JOY & HOPE | A school that prepares for life

A MESSAGE FROM OUR 2020 COLLEGE CAPTAINS

As the new school term begins, we hope

that the entire Bosco community had

a safe and restful break and that you

and your families are all well. We are both excited

to begin the new term whether we are at school

or learning from home; however we will remain

positive and optimistic for the future.

As we begin shifting back to face to face teaching

we would like to congratulate all students on

their efforts with online learning and commend

them on their resilience and perseverance in these

unprecedented times. On behalf of the college

community, we would like to thank all the staff

who have put all the effort and hard work into

supporting us all through this time of great change

and congratulate them on their seamless transition

to online learning.

Although we are alone at this time, we are all

together as TEAM BOSCO! We are lucky to be

blessed with the technology and the ability to

communicate with one another and blessed with

the opportunity to continue our learning online.

Although we may miss our friends, teachers

and the canteen, working from home presents a

number of positives: a flexible schedule, staying

more focused, saving time commuting to and from

school and a slight sleep in till 8:30am.

For the HSC class of 2020, we congratulate you

on your diligence and hard work during these

difficult times. The HSC is stressful enough

without a change as significant as the one we

have just experienced, but remember, we are all

in this together. As we transition back to face to

face learning in the coming weeks, it is essential

that we support one another and understand the

position we have all been put in. We cannot change

the circumstances, however we can change our

attitude and response so that we can take on the

HSC to the best of our ability.

We look forward to seeing everyone from Team

Bosco once again and are excited to continue

working with the school community to create a

unified, cohesive and supportive environment

where everyone feels safe and valued.

See you soon!

Curriculum Coordinator | Mrs Belinda Westwood

There will be a continued focus on quality learning. Students are required to fully engage in the lessons that have been provided and complete set tasks or projects to the best of their ability. The advertised assessment calendar for Years 7-10 Term 2 will continue to be suspended for now. During this time of online learning and transitioning back to school, teachers will focus on a formative style of assessment.

Formative assessment refers to a wide variety of methods that teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, and academic progress during a lesson, unit or course. Teachers will be monitoring students' learning and progress and providing them with feedback to improve their learning.

Formative assessment can be carried out in many different ways and no formal assessment notification is required. Some examples can include:

• quick quiz

• writing a paragraph about a topic students' have been learning about

• drawing a mind map as an overview of learning that has occurred

• and many other ways.

What does that mean for Years 7-10 students?

Formative assessment is classwork that is marked. Students must fully engage in the lessons that have been provided and complete set tasks or projects to the best of their ability.

As the learning environment changes in response to COVID-199 information will be provided to staff, students and parents with updates about assessment across the College.

Students need to remember:

• Focus on right now

• Keep learning, keep submitting your classwork, assessments and listen to your teachers

• Look after yourself, whether you are at home or at school.

• Reach out to your family, friends and your teachers if you need to.

ASSESSMENT FOR TERM 2 IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19Last term brought many changes which happened very quickly in response to Covid-19. NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) gave Principals the power to make decisions concerning assessment. Once we moved to learning online, assessment at Bosco College was suspended. NESA makes regular announcements and updates on their website These announcements can provide schools, parents and students with updated information about assessment and the HSC. NESA keep providing regular updates and changes after their Covid19 response team meet. These updates are what direct the College’s decisions concerning assessment.

As a College we are going to move forward in Term 2 with the foolowing assessment: Years 7-10 will have some changes whilst Years 11 & 12 will continue with assessment.

ASSESSMENT FOR YEARS 7 - 10

3 TERM 2 - WEEK 1 GAUDIUM ET SPES | JOY & HOPE | A school that prepares for life

Page 4: NEWSLETTER - St John Bosco College · NEWSLETTER 1 MAY 2020 | VOLUME 44 NO. 12 TERM 2 - WEEK 1 - 2020 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them,

Assessment will re-commence for Years 11 & 12. New assessment calendars for Terms 2 & 3 will be shared with Years 11 & 12. The College’s Stage 6 Assessment Policy has been amended in response to COVID-19. Years 11 & 12 students will receive a copy of the amended Assessment Policy.

Students need to be aware that:

• drafts of assessments need to be stored in specific subject Google Drive folders that are shared with the classroom teacher. This may mean students having to upload photos of work for subjects such as Visual Arts, Maths, Design and Tech, as some examples.

• assessments will be submitted online

• if students become unwell or a misadventure occurs there must be emails sent to the classroom teacher as early as possible

• Illness/Misadventure form will now be available as an online form. Students will need to submit their request for Illness/Misadventure with supporting evidence such as a parent letter, doctor’s certificate, hospital documentation as some examples.

• if it is not possible to submit a completed assessment task online on the set date because of Illness/Misadventure, and the Illness/Misadventure is considered an acceptable reason, the classroom teacher will locate your draft in your Google Drive Subject folder and use this for submission taking into consideration the impact your Illness/Misadventure has had on completing this task.

Students also need to be reminded of their obligation to maintain honesty and integrity when:

• completing assessment tasks, exams and submitted works

• acknowledging any part of work that was written, created or developed by someone else, such as any material from other sources and work undertaken by others.

The College’s Academic Integrity Policy is still in practice and students must maintain honesty, integrity and understand malpractice.

An important change for Year 12 is that the Trial HSC Examinations will now be two weeks later than originally scheduled. They will start Week 5 of Term 3, Monday 17 August.

What NESA changes have occurred for HSC Major Works and Projects?

Dance - for core composition students will need to dance their own choreography

Drama - the mandatory group performance has been cancelled

Design & Technology - the major design project will now be internally marked and the folio will continue to be marked externally. The due date has now been extended by two weeks.

Extension 2 English - there are no changes to the due date of the major work

Music - students must not perform in an ensemble and the due dates are unchanged

Timber - the major project will now be internally marked and the folio will continue to be marked externally. The due date has now been extended by two weeks.

Visual Arts - the body of work will now be internally marked. The due date has now been extended by two weeks.

Where major works and projects are now being marked internally, teachers will use the HSC marking guidelines and annotated benchmarks to mark each student’s product or body of work. Teachers are well placed to fairly mark these components as they have been monitoring each student’s progress on their projects and body of work since the start of Term 4 last year. Marks awarded by teachers are confidential and are not to be revealed to students.

PARENTS AND CARERS, ARE YOU STILL WORKING FROM HOME? It may have started as a bit of a novelty, but working from home for long periods of time can start to affect your mental health. Black Dog Institute has a few helpful suggestions to help get parents through this difficult time. Check out Managing your mental health at home during Covid-19.

Also available through Black Dog Institute Online Clinic for over 18s is a free mental health assessment tool where you can receive a personalised report with suggested support services and free or low-cost resources for you to access. This report can be downloaded, printed or emailed to share with your family or doctor.

WELCOME BACK BOSCO STUDENTS - SLEEP WELLGetting a good night's sleep is crucial for good learning and a student's mental wellbeing. So How much sleep do you really need? According to the sleep health foundation, teenagers need between 8 and 11 hours each night. For Sleeping well Beyond Blue suggests looking after your whole sleep routine.

When you wake in the morning

• get out of bed immediately

• get up at approximately the same time every day

• get some fresh air by going outside; do some physical activity

• don’t nap during the day.

Before going to bed

• avoid going to bed too early as it isn’t the right time for ‘deep sleep’

• allow yourself time to wind down

• avoid using electronic devices in your bedroom or within 30 minutes of your bedtime.

While you sleep

• keep your bedroom quiet, dark, well ventilated and cool

• avoid too many blankets and electric blankets – if you’re too hot, you won’t go into a deep sleep.

Sleep to remember, remember to sleep

Want to learn more about how sleep restructures your brain in a way that’s crucial for how your memory works? Check out this Ted Ed clip on the Benefits of a good night's sleep.

In response to the current global crisis, all in-school Public Speaking events have been cancelled for 2020.

In light of this, the Speaking 4 the Planet competition is being offered as a single, online event.

This online event will feed into an international Speaking 4 the Planet competition being held in November. Winning students from the NSW event will be automatically invited to participate in the international competition, which will also be online.

The topic for the online competition is: All choices have implications.

The event involves seven creative components that students can participate in: Speaking, Drama, Artwork, Writing, Meme, TikTok and Video.

The winners in each category will receive prizes and all students who submit an entry will receive a certificate of participation.

The closing date for submissions is Friday 5 June, 2020.
