Here are a few memories… The Grandmaster and his lovely family: I had the honor of transporting Grand Master Jae C. Shin and his family during the event. I was terribly nervous driving the family in a 16-passenger van. Amidst zooming motorcycles, torrential downpours, 18 Wheelers and my nervousness, I managed to get lost only once. Grand Master Shin and his family were gracious and patient, demonstrating their appreciation and generosity by giving me a box of Korean Ginseng Tea. Grand Master Beaudoin and his graceful wife, Joanne: The driving crew had the opportunity to play cards with Grand Master Beaudoin and his wife, Joanne. The drivers now have autographed playing cards to put with our TSD memorabilia. I am so impressed with the leadership of the WTSDA. Grand Master and Mrs. Robert Beaudoin are smart and professional, but also friendly, down-to-earth and open to spending casual, fun time with the crew! The delegation from Mexico: One of the highlights of the trip was shuttling a group of folks from Mexico. These guys were some of the sweetest, most fun-loving, appreciative folks I have ever met. They tried to teach me some Spanish, laughed at my pitiful efforts and even gave me directions a couple of times! The photo we took with the group gathered behind the Mexican flag is one of my favorite pictures from the trip! The Drivers: Wow! What a great time and what an awesome team! The drivers were all from Scota Karate Academy in Region 7. We train together weekly, but serving together in this way enabled us to spend time together, work together and brought to surface our training relationships to whole new level. We shared moments of confusion, joy, laughter, late night card games in the parking lot, getting lost, getting found, being giddy with exhaustion and getting completely burnt out on fast food. We all vowed never to eat at the Food Court in the Greensboro Mall ever again! We even shared a double rainbow twice in one day. Had I just “attended” The World Tournament, I would have missed an incredible opportunity. Yes, it was a lot of work! There is something powerful and life changing about extending yourself in the service of others. I had the opportunity and the honor to spend time with Grand Master Shin and Grand Master Beaudoin and their families. I spent time with people from all over the world that would have otherwise only gotten a bow and a smile. The experience enriched my life with deep and lasting friendships with fellow students in my school and I gained the satisfaction being a part of something and of a job well done! On June 11-13, 2010 the WTSDA Black Belts and Cho Dan Bo’s of Region 7 gathered for our 11th annual Black Belt Camp held, once again, on the beautiful campus of Furman

University in Greenville, South Carolina. The excitement was palpable as approximately 120 participants filled the great hall on opening night. This was the largest number in attendance since the region began this event in 2000 with only 40 Black Belts. Friday night, after splitting into teams for a weekend of friendly competition, the group enjoyed Master Mars’ slide presentation of the 2007 China Delegation Trip led by Grandmaster Shin. It was a unique opportunity for our Black Belts to learn more and gain a greater understanding and appreciation for our Tang Soo Do heritage. Saturday was filled with a wide variety of top-notch workshops. In addition to some advanced, technical training in Extended Reach Grip Bong, Korean Sword, Hyung Applications and Escrima Sticks, students were able to “sample” the arts of Tai Chi, Kubaton and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Additionally, no one will forget the intense session in Athletic Conditioning! It had everyone soaking wet with sweat in the sweltering South Carolina heat. The day provided an awesome chance to expand our knowledge by adding skills to our martial arts “tool box” as well as fine-tuning our TSD techniques. We were fortunate to have Master Jim Mars (Regional Director), Master C. Mitchell Dunn, Master Joe Scota, Master Wilson Smith, Master Joel Gilreath, Master Cy Genna and Master Randall Kuehner in attendance. One of the most inspirational times for the group came Saturday evening when the seven Masters addressed the Black Belts on the topic, “What It Means To Be a Black Belt.” Master Mars kicked off the session by reminding us that, as a Gup student, one’s focus is primarily on his studio. A Black Belt must widen his focus to include his region; a Master must broaden his focus even further to include the entire Association. He encouraged us to do our part as

Black Belts to take Region 7 to the next level by “doubling the number of studios in the region within the next 5 years!” “A Black Belt isn’t something that you wear, it’s something that you are,” according to Master Kuehner. It’s about community service, helping run your studio, refining your physical technique and learning how to teach others. Master Genna pointed out that, as a Black Belt, “class is really not for you anymore. Your education from here on out comes more from teaching others; from feeding the junior ranks.” He challenged us with the question, “What have you done for your Studio, your Region, the

Association, the Art?” The answer is different for each one of us and can only be answered individually. Servant leadership was the focus for Master Joe Scota. He spoke of how a Black Belt must always be ready to serve, without the expectation of recognition or praise. He encouraged us to strive

to conduct ourselves “with respect, good morals, dignity and honor.” According to Master Smith, being a Black Belt is “not just about physical skills, it’s about pushing yourself beyond your boundaries.” Master Gilreath spoke passionately about the “brother/sisterhood” of being a Black Belt. “We are like a family, looking out for one another with compassion and understanding.” That feeling of camaraderie was certainly felt on Sunday as we all prepared to say goodbye. After an early morning session in Hyung exercises, we gathered for the

graduation and promotion of new Black Belts and our departure. Each one of us took away a greater understanding of our role in the WTSDA, increased technical skills and a new vision for how we can directly contribute to the growth of Region 7.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A BLACK BELT

March 27, the day dawned bright and sunny for the 2010 Region 9 Championship. The night before there had been a very successful Demo Team competition with

five great teams showing their skills after working months to put together their routines. It was especially challenging because their music did not broadcast loudly enough for everyone to hear. In the end, the team from Haney Karate won first place and the honor to perform their demo at the Championship the following day. After the Demo cup was awarded everyone in attendance separated into groups. The recent black belt test graduates went off with Master Couture to create a demo to wow the crowds prior to receiving their next promotion while the rest of the students had a Clinic with the Masters. On Saturday, the Black Belts competed in the morning, followed by the gup’s weapons competition. After opening ceremonies the gups competed in forms and sparring and finished up the day by four in the afternoon. The opening ceremonies were full of awards. The advancing black belts were given their new ranks after showing the spectators a small sample of what they could

do. Master of Ceremonies Master Valentin introduced all the studio owners from Region 9 as well as guests, which included Master Hull, Mr. Stahl and Mr. Thierfelder from Northern Star Karate. The two 2010 scholarships were awarded to Jael Valentin from Valentin’s Karate and Justina DaRosa from Costa’s Tang Soo Do for their academic successes and contributions to World Tang Soo Do. Our Region 9 Family of the Year was awarded to the Hannigan Family from Valentin Karate for their outstanding contributions. Finally, Region 9 Championship T-shirts were awarded to Mark Kranser who has donated his time as fire marshal for many of our Championships and Oxford High School Assistant principle Glenn Lungarini for always smoothing our way at Oxford High School. 318 students participated during our Championship weekend. Our weekend was capped off with a lovely dinner at the Colonial Tavern Restaurant on Saturday evening.

a letter of ‘Thanks!’Dear WTSDA, I’m writing this letter to thank you for having outstanding people in your organization, Master K. Robinson and Master J. Centrone. They took time away from their families, to help us, during our most trying summer 2008. It started when we took our son to compete at the WTSDA karate tournament, held in Florida. My son ended up not competing and coming home in a wheelchair. This was due to the chicken pox virus. He was vaccinated throughout his childhood with all the appropriate vaccines, including chicken pox. Regardless of the vaccines he did contract chicken pox in January of 2008. The middle of June 2008 he had bilateral ear infections, which was felt to have triggered the chicken pox virus. It is felt the virus attacked the cerebella area of the brain. This is most common in children 3 to 5 years of age, but fairly rare at age 11. This caused him inability to sit or even walk. After several months and extensive therapy, our son is back to normal. We were told by his doctor that because of how well his endurance was he fared better than a child who was not as athletic as he is. With that said I would like to thank first Master J. Centrone for taking time out to visit our son while he was a patient at Philadelphia children’s hospital. His visit brightened not only my son’s day but my husbands and mine too. To think that someone we new briefly through karate would take time out of his busy schedule to visit our son was huge. Now I would like to thank his karate teacher, Master Kevin Robinson at Robinson’s Martial Arts Institute in Tunkhannock, for helping my child. Through karate he has learned to persevere, be patient and to understand his surroundings. Master Robinson not only took time out of his busy schedule to call us periodically to see not only how our son was doing, but also how our family was holding up. He would come over and take our child on outings for the day just to change his scenery. Our son returned to karate at the end of November 2008. He did not want to restart karate, because he was afraid,

he knew he could not perform like he did. With Master Robinson’s encouragement and the encouragement of the karate school, he was able to return to karate for the full class by the end of March 2009. The final hurdle was to convince my son to compete in a karate tournament. This was met with great reluctance, and always a NO! Finally, this year, I convinced my son to compete at the Region 8 2009 tournament. I told him after everything he went through I knew he was good to go, but I still couldn’t shake the feeling he was not a hundred percent. Reluctantly he agreed and I was so proud watching him

compete. I felt in my mind and heart he was truly over his illness. Surprisingly he was able to score high enough to win a silver medal in forms and a bronze in weapons. When I first sent this letter to the WTSDA on December

24, 2009, I was complete with the knowledge my son was fine. What I didn’t know was that in his mind, he was not. I did not find this out until this year at the 2010 WTSDA Tournament that was recently held in North Carolina. The morning of the youth black belt competition, my son only ate 4 mouthfuls of his breakfast. This is highly unusual for him. We questioned him if he was nervous, he stated a little and dropped the conversation. He performed well; he scored high enough to take a bronze in forms and weapons. After we were home, one night after karate, we started talking about the tournament. I asked my son how he felt about the tournament. He stated, “I thought it went well.” Just the way he said it, it made me look at him and ask him if he thought, when he was at the tournamnet, if he was going to be sick again. The expression on his face told me he did. He had tears in his eyes. I said to him, I think you needed to do the WTSDA Tournament this year to make you feel complete and to know that nothing was going to happen like it did 2 years ago. He agreed. Thus, I would like to say “THANK YOU” to your organization for helping my child recover to his full potential.

Sincerely yours,Cathy Saporito

in a karate tournament.”

REGION 1 - TAHOE CLINIC

As the car wound through the mountain passes on the way to Lake Tahoe from San Francisco, I listened to

the chatter of my two daughters in the backseat and wondered what this clinic weekend would be like. Although my family of four, who all train together, had been to the Region 1 tournament in May, we had not been to a clinic yet and I could only hope that the Masters in charge would notice my fresh, new, bright orange belt and not completely flatten me during the six hours we would be together. I was looking forward to the camaraderie of hanging out with people who had all left their usual lives back in San Francisco for a similar purpose; immersing ourselves in Tang Soo Do for a day. We received the call to line up, I hurried the girls into place and then focused my thoughts on making the most of my day: I wanted to work out hard and learn everything I could from the instructors, no holding back! Our first challenge came as Mr. Travis Weaver, a 5th gup and a Cross Fit trainer, was introduced to “warm us up and work us out.” The workout involved timed circuits of squats, push-ups, and sit-ups, and I was heartened to note that Mr. Weaver seemed effective in motivating all of us: the black belts seemed to be sweating just as much as I was. After making sure my 6-year-old (9th Gup) and my 10-year-old (6th Gup) had survived intact (they did the same workout we adults did!), we grouped up for our first workshop rotation. The gup students studied flow techniques with Master Schroeder. I focused intently on the task at hand, since with flow techniques you’ll get hit in the face if you’re not paying attention. The cane workshop, led by Mr. Mike Gasser, Sam Dan from Fitness Fanatics in Santa Rosa, kept us busy as we moved quickly from demonstration to practice. What looked so fluid and easy in the hands of Mr. Gasser felt awkward and choppy in mine, but my partner and I hung in there.

When we were called for the lunch break, I was grateful for the workshop handouts, knowing I would need those reminders later. After lunch, Masters Patrick Marsh and Claire Marsh introduced us to Filipino fighting sticks. We quickly learned to “hide behind the stick” and not wrap your hands lest you take a nasty whack to the knuckles. Just when we started to feel more confident, we would watch another demonstration by the two Master instructors, and be humbled and awed by their sticks flashing in the sun and clicking against each other. Like Mr. Gasser with the cane, they made it look so easy. Our final rotation sent us into the shade with Mr. Scott Frykberg, a 2-time World Champion Thai Fighter. We threw ourselves into Thai fighting kicks that jarred the pads held by our partners. This constantly reminded us that the object was not to kick and retreat, but to demolish our opponent. As we practiced one of the last drills, that of deflecting an oncoming punch by a small, wave-type motion, I was reminded of the flow workshop where we had started that morning, struck by the similarity in effectiveness of small, close movements to deflect larger, aggressive incoming attacks. After the clinic, we had a chance to sit on the shore of the beautiful lake, enjoy good food prepared by Mr. Patrick Cerceau and other Tahoe City Tang Soo Do members, and chat with old and new friends. As I watched the sun sink over the mountains and helped the girls make their second and third s’mores, I felt satisfied and invigorated by my day. I had fulfilled my morning goal: no holding back. The sore muscles and bruised forearms of tomorrow were all worth it. Tang Soo!

I waited at my desk nervously taping my pencil against the light wood, waiting for the “go home early call” that Friday. I was going to Reno, Nevada to compete in the World Tang Soo Do Championship. When

the school bell rang I packed up my bag and was out the door. In the car, it was just my mom and I driving to the airport. We boarded as soon as we arrived, that flight was going to take me to the karate tournament where I would be competing. When we got to our hotel the nerves hit even harder. The next morning it was time, time for me to start getting ready to compete. As we walked into the arena, a thousand things were floating in my mind. What if I mess up? What if I didn’t get any medals? What if I ended up getting hurt? What was I getting myself in to? The first event that I competed in was forms; I was up against my friend Danielle and another girl who seemed very focused. When it was my turn, I took a deep breath and began. I was halfway through my routine, when I blanked out completely. It was terrifying, I stood still, frozen, sweat crawling down my face and everyone’s eyes on me. I turned around and asked for another chance. Luckily the judges agreed and I started over and that time I made sure it was perfect. As I watched both of the girls compete, I thought to myself what could I have done better, but I realized I couldn’t have done anything, it was just nerves getting to me. I had practiced that form a thousand times

at home but when I got up there in front of the judges, the pressure was on. The next event was weapons, I would show my bong form. Last time I blew it, so I knew I would have to give it my all. I twirled it with all my might, snapping my hips, making sure my feet were perfect. After I was done, I felt a little bit of relief but I didn’t know what the judges thought so I kept it unnoticeable. After I saw my competitors go, I didn’t feel that relief any longer. Finally it was time for sparring, the most unpredictable event there is. Slowly I got my sparing gear on, thinking

of moves that could work with these girls. As I walked into the square, I felt butterflies swarming in my stomach, beads of sweat falling down my face. Once again I took a deep breath and began. The first round I won, but it was a close match. The next round seemed to take forever, but in the end I won.

Finally they announced the medals, I had won a gold in sparring, a gold in weapons and a bronze in forms. I was happy with my achievements. On the plane home I thought, “You know what, I’m Tessa Duncan and I’m a Karate Girl.”

I had practiced that form a thousand times at home but

when I got up there in front of the judges, the pressure was on.

On August 21, 2010, WTSDA students and instructors ran in memory of Master

Michael DiPietro in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. The Armstrong/LiveStrong Challenge event had over 3,000 participants and raised a great deal of money for research in the fight against cancer.

On September 25, 2010, the 4th annual Master Massaroni Memorial Run/Walk took place in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. All monies raised were donated to the “Just For The Kids” organization, which funds public school projects for Bensalem student programs that are not financed by the school district. Masters Causerano and Fisher joined Master Gordon and students from Black Belt Academy to ensure the event was a success.

Black Belt; the end of one life cycle and the beginning of the next, that leads us down the path to higher

Black Belts and true mastery of the art. And yet, of all those that begin down the path toward a Black Belt, very few make it. That is what makes the Galing family so special. Three of them have made the journey and stayed on the path achieving their goal of Black Belts. The Galing’s are not just two brothers and a sister, they are amazing triplets! Ben, David and Rachel began at Black Belt Academy as 4 year old “Little Dragons” under the tutelage of Master Massaroni. All three initially pre-tested for Cho Dan together, however, only Ben passed the difficult pre-testing series. Amazingly his siblings and parents encouraged him to take the September 2009 Regional Black Belt Test, rather than wait to

test with his brother and sister in a future cycle. David and Rachel successfully passed their next pre-testing cycle and

became Black Belts in April, 2010. At the 2010 Region 8 Championship, the triplets competed together for the first time as a family of Black Belts. All three continue to train diligently and seem very focused on continuing their journey in Tang Soo Do. Their faces beamed at the Championship as all three had their fresh Black Belt Dobohks autographed by Kwan Chang Nim Shin.

UM-YANG DAY - SOUTH AFRICAN TANG SOO DO

The battle lines were drawn and the prizes proudly displayed as the armies amassed. From across

the room each side sized up their opponents. Spirits ran high as each side displayed their need for victory and their burning desire to be the best. With a loud “Tang Soo!” it started; South African Tang Soo Do’s annual Um Yang Day. The Um Yang day is a kid’s Competition that allows children the opportunity to compete in a great team atmosphere and for parents to see what their children have achieved. More importantly it had to be an enjoyable experience for all participants. For the event the Dojang was divided into two sides, red and blue. Then, each side was assigned a team, each representing the two sides of the Um Jang. Without hesitation the competition started with a forms division and each participant did their best to add a high score to their team’s collective score. It was with bated breath that participants and spectators alike awaited the scores to be announced. Then it was on to Tiny Tiger Sparring. The objective was to take away your opponents four team colored tags, without releasing any of your own.

Cheering echoed through the dojang as each team encouraged their champions of each match to battle it out. Parents watched with fascination as each match took its course and supplied a winner. Each tag not only represented a point but also the code “No Retreat In Battle.” Participants supplied their individual team with points that counted towards the team’s collective score. After fierce competition the final scores of each team were calculated and reflected on the scoreboard. Um team: 114 points…Yang Team: 114 points. Unbelievable, unplanned, no one would have anticipated that. Tired, but satisfied, each participant gladly received the medals they had worked so hard for. South African Tang Soo Do would like to thank all their members and parents for the help they provided in making this a spectacularly successful and exciting event. It clearly displayed the studio motto of “With Heart We Stand”!

Senior Master Johnny Williamson’s Starworld World Tang Soo Do Association Academies,

located in Sierra Vista Arizona and Goodyear Arizona were recently recognized for service to their communities by their respective mayors and collectively raised over $1,500 for the WTSDA Building fund. Throughout the year, both WTSDA schools host free community anti-bully workshops, child safety seminars, leadership development seminars, health and wellness clinics, confidence course events, better discipline workshops, Say NO to Drugs events, child abduction prevention seminars and perform demonstrations at town fairs for the community. Both WTSDA schools were given recognition through proclamations. “We make it a point to give back to our communities each month,” Williamson said. “I feel giving back to your community is a privilege. Everyone should volunteer and give to their community what they enjoy doing. That makes them happy.”

According to Williamson, November is World Tang Soo Do Association (WTSDA) month, when WTSDA martial artists

around the world are recognized for their community service, and many WTSDA martial arts studios provide praiseworthy service to their communities. Both academies, in November did fundraisers and raised over $1,500.00 for the WTSDA Building fund by way of a Board Break-A-Thon. “It takes a lot of commitment and hard work but once you have the system established, it’s easier to get out there and help people,” he said. Williamson explained that the martial arts introduce the values of self-control, self-discipline, personal defense and physical fitness for everyone. Martial arts enhances self-esteem, goal setting abilities, anger

management, and the skills of non-violent conflict resolution in people of all ages, helping them to become more productive and healthy. “People have a lot to give, and we will set them up to do that,” he said.

Pakistan Needs Our Help Compassion is an important part of our lives as Tang Soo Do warriors; caring for those that are in need and doing our best to make a positive difference in the lives of people who are hurting. Members of our World Tang Soo Do family in Pakistan are suffering from the aftermath of the worst flooding in decades. Amjad Islam, our World Tang Soo Do representative and Chief Instructor, reports that 20 million people have been affected by the flooding which has hit this nation. A shortage of safe drinking water and medical supplies has intensified the problems of those suffering from fever and stomach ailments. Almost 5 million people are without adequate shelter. 5,000 schools have been damaged and crops that supply food have been destroyed. In total, 20 million people have felt the effect of these devastating floods and 1,500 people have lost their lives.

Pakistan is a nation whose people are struggling with a weak government, poor economic conditions, attacks by the terrorist groups al Qaeda and the Taliban and now devastating floods. If you or your school/club would like to help, please contact:

Coastal Canyon Tang Soo Do in San Diego, CA, recently donated $200 to the Del Mar Schools Education Foundation. The DMSEF is a non-profit organization working to keep science, music, art, technology, and physical education classes in the local public schools. Coastal Canyon instructors Kelly Goodwin and Robert Johnson train students from several of the local schools in their program. They understand the need for physical/intellectual balance; in addition to teaching Tang Soo Do, they both hold advanced degrees in engineering and science. Instructor Kelly Goodwin commented that “A well-rounded education is critical to healthy child development. Structured physical activity helps kids develop social skills and releases energy so they can better focus in the classroom. They also need specialized services in science, technology, and the arts to meet the technological and creative demands of the future.”

Ocean Air Martial Arts Program Supports Local Schools

Spreading Tang Soo Do Through Community Service

Twin Dragons Martial Arts & Fitness has recently developed a special group of students,

instructors and parents called the Dragon Crew. The purpose of the Dragon Crew is to provide the opportunity for our students to perform community service under the guidance of instructors and parents. Our goal is to show our local community the true meaning of martial arts by guiding future leaders to assist those in need and promote health and safety for everyone. So far our Dragon Crew has sponsored a “Back to School Bash” for children that focused on health, fitness, and bully prevention.

The Dragon Crew also had the honor of having a Lawn Care Day for the elderly. Two homes were chosen to receive a whirlwind of lawn service. Our sweat and hard work impressed the homeowners and their gratitude touched our hearts. Every community could use groups like the Dragon Crew, willing to give time and effort to help and educate people. In return, our martial arts students learn that true strength is shown when we reach out to help others.

JOIN OUR $1,000 DONOR’S CLUB!In January of 2005, the WTSDF Construction Committee began selling 1000 pillars. So far we have 192 pillars sold and 808 left to sell. Market trends for purchasing and building new properties has risen astronomically over the past few years and our original budget for construction, which was set in 1993, does not match the reality of actual costs in 2010. In

order to accelerate our fund raising, we established the $1,000 Donors Club. Anyone who wishes to join this effort should contact Headquarters or their local Building Fund Chair Person for the pledge form. Those who wish to purchase a pillar may pay in installments. If anyone has already donated a significant amount less than $1,000 and would like that

money applied towards a pillar, contact Headquarters with your donor #’s and dates and it can be applied to the pledge form. Keep in mind that the pillars are for individual contributions, not regional or studio contributions. We appreciate all of those who have joined in our efforts to date and will commemorate them with pillars in the new building.

World Tang Soo Do Foundation Newsletter...A Place To Shine!

For the last several years it has been my honor to function in editing and organizing the

foundation portion of the newsletter. In talking to many instructors and students around the WTSDA, I have heard of many community service events and activities that demonstrate Tang Soo Do dedication to family and community. I would be honored to feature your events in this newsletter. Please consider sending a brief article and some

pictures or any scholarship, community service or charity articles to me at [email protected]. Please share all your hard work with others in the association. You may inspire a similar project half way around the world!
