Monthly Oil Statistics

CHART 1

Indigenous production of crude oil, NGL and feedstocks by OECD Region

Total OECD indigenous production of crude oil, NGL and refinery feedstocks grew by 0.7% in April 2020

compared to April 2019. The trend was led by OECD Europe, where production increased by 11.0% on a year-

on-year basis1 as the result of increased production in Norway (+25.3% y-o-y). Production also grew in OECD

Asia Oceania (+15.0% y-o-y), due to an increase in Australia (+18.3% y-o-y).Meanwhile, production in the OECD

Americas decreased (1.0% y-o-y) as indigenous production decreased in Canada (-5.6% y-o-y).

Total OECD refinery gross output of total products decreased by 18.3% in April 2020 compared to April 2019.

Similar to the pattern observed last month, this decrease was observed across all OECD regions. Refinery gross

output of motor gasoline was hit the hardest, with a 27.7% decline year-on-year. There were also similar

declines in refinery output of total kerosene (-50.7% y-o-y) and gas/diesel oil (-6.7% y-o-y).

Total OECD net deliveries of total products decreased by 28.7% in April 2020 compared to April 2019, with

substantial decreases being observed in total gasoline (-40.4% y-o-y), total kerosene (-66.3% y-o-y) and

gas/diesel oil (-18.1% y-o-y). This trend was observed across all OECD regions, as it was directly related to the

lockdowns and subsequent travel restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The OECD Americas

experienced the largest decline in overall net deliveries with a reduction of 30.6% year-on-year, led by the

decrease of motor gasoline deliveries (-39.3% y-o-y). A notable decline in deliveries was also observed in OECD

Europe (-31.8% y-o-y), where deliveries of gas/diesel oil decrease significantly (-24.2% y-o-y).

Total OECD oil stock levels of national territory increased by 19306 kt in April 2020 compared to closing stock

levels in March 2020, and closed at 563 million metric tons. Stock builds were observed across all OECD

regions, and can be attributed to reduced demand of oil products due to the Covid-19 crisis. The OECD

Americas led this trend (+11163 kt), followed by OECD Europe (+6165 kt) and OECD Asia Oceania (+1977 kt). In

the total OECD, stocks of crude oil, NGL and refinery feedstocks experienced a significant build (+12681 kt),

mostly from the United States (+6961 kt) and Japan (+1973 kt). Stocks of total oil products also experienced a

build (+6625 kt), due to builds in oil products in the OECD Americas (+3838 kt) and OECD Europe (+3103 kt).

Austria Most recent data are the best estimates from the Austrian national administration, based on available

preliminary data. Data are usually finalised within three months following the first publication.

Canada As of January 2019, Canadian data includes outputs of secondary products from bitumen upgraders. These are

reported under “from other sources” under other hydrocarbons, and in “primary product receipts” for refinery

gas, gas/diesel oil and petroleum coke.There in a break in series between December 2018 and January 2019 as the Canadian Administration launched

a new Monthly Refined Petroleum Products survey in the beginning of 2019. The survey includes greater

coverage of all products.The Canadian Administration includes condensates and pentanes plus under crude oil.

Data for Canada are submitted by the Department of Natural Resources (Natural Resources Canada, or NRCan),

based on actual and preliminary data from Canada's national statistical agency (Statistics Canada) and various

other sources. In cases where data from these sources are unavailable, estimates are conducted by NRCan,

based on information available at the time, including alternative sources. Data are usually finalised within three

months of the first publication. An important source for any differences between data published by Statistics

Canada and data published by the IEA is data estimated by NRCan or the IEA Secretariat.

Chile The most recent data on inland deliveries for Chile are preliminary. This data are updated within two months

following the first publication.

Finland Starting from August 2019, information on international marine bunkers are not available but included in the

“Gross inland deliveries obs.” of total fuel oil and gas/diesel due to confidentiality reasons.

France French data includes the overseas departments (French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte and

Reunion).

Israel The stocks level information is not available at this time.

The statistical data for Israel are supplied by and under the responsibility of the relevant Israeli authorities. The

use of such data by the OECD is without prejudice to the status of the Golan Heights, East Jerusalem and Israeli

settlements in the West Bank under the terms of international law.The trade breakdown information is not available at this time.

Petroleum coke is included by Israeli Administration in the amounts of other petroleum products.

Information is based on data published by the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources as well as the Central

Bureau of Statistics.

Mexico Starting from January 2018, reporting of LPG imports and deliveries is based on a more comprehensive

coverage of the market.

United States The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) excludes crude oil lease stocks (crude oil stocks held at

producing sites) from industry stocks of crude oil.
