Our sincere thanks to all donors ofclothing, food, toiletries and other itemsfor the Bush Fire Relief. We wereinundated; couldn’t move in the shopor our storage shed and eventually hadto use the Josephite Centre at theschool. Our volunteers were exhaustedafter three days of sorting and the pilewas growing larger behind them. Wehad to call in reinforcement from otherSt Vinnie’s to help and so a goodamount of the donations was taken

away to be sorted and will then bereturned to the Community Centre fordistribution. As it was, the clothingwas of no use until it was sorted intoadults and children and into sizes. We were able to hire a sea containerwhich is now at the CommunityCentre and will be used for storage. If you have been affected by the fire, you should go to the CommunityCentre and if any of our otherservices are needed they will contactus, otherwise our usual clients maymake appointments from nextWednesday 3rd February. The booksale which was to take place duringJanuary has now been extended intoFebruary; due to the fire. The priceremains the same. A bag of booksfor $5.00.

The name Yarloop is said to haveoriginated from the words "yard loop",the rail loop into the timber yard there. However, the name is more likelyAboriginal in origin (most likely fromthe Bindjareb Noongar people) YalupBrook is situated only about 5 km northof Yarloop and there is similarity inpronunciation of the word and the earlyspelling variations of the siding (Yailoupand Yarloup) support it beingAboriginal. In 1849, Joseph Loguearrived in the area and farmed at nearbyCookernup. He was followed by W.J.Eastcott, who used to collect red gumbark and pit-saw timber for othersettlers and John Bancells in 1886. In1894, Charles and Edwin Millar movedinto the district looking to put nearbystands of jarrah to use - they hadexported jarrah blocks to London foruse in street paving. They soonestablished their own 300-acre(1.2 km2) timber town withaccommodation and support facilities, located 2 km south of a government-surveyed town site as the companywished to maintain effective controlover staff and workmen. However, noteveryone working at the mill wantedto live in the facilities, so a companytown on the eastern side of therailway and a public town on thewestern side developed. A siding onthe Perth-Bunbury Railway cameinto being in 1896. In 1901, theymade Yarloop the centre of their

operations, and the town becameeven more important when in 1905they closed their Denmark mills onthe south coast. At their peak, theyemployed over 500 people in theYarloop area. By the 1930s, theyboasted the largest private railway inthe world with eight railway systemsand 25 locomotives. The timber mill, originally known as the Waigerupmill, still operates and in 1984 themill town was classified as aconservation area by the NationalTrust and is now protected by theYarloop Conservation Plan (1998)administered by the HeritageCouncil The town was gazetted in1962.

Ants – control is no picnicWhile many pests are seasonal thereis one with an all year round effect –ants! Unless you know the species ofant, control can be guess work.Different species of ants requiredifferent control methods andAustralia is home to more than 2000species of ants, of which more than800 are found in Western Australia. The most common exteriorexcavating ant is the coastal brownant (Pheidole megacephala) fromAfrica, a foraging ant that requires agranular bait with the activeingredient hydramethylnon forcontrol. House infesting ants such aswhite-footed house ants(Technomyrmex species) and blackhouse ants (Ochetellus species)respond best to liquid or gel baits.Odorous garden ants (Iridomyrmexspecies) and other native species arebest treated with permethrin orbifenthrin sprays. Some native antslike Camponotus and Tetramoriumgenerally cause no problems and canbe left to do what ants do. Argentineants, once a threat, now rarely seemto be reported as problematic.Singapore ants occasionally flare upin the north of the state. Tramp ants

and browsing ants have beenintercepted a few times aroundairports or seaports and have beeneradicated when found. Exoticspecies are a constant threat to ourstate and if established here wouldimpact on our outdoor lifestyle andWA’s agriculturaland foodindustries. Red-imported fireants and electricants are seriousant pests of theworld. Both areaggressive andinflict painfulstings and arepresent inQueensland.Yellow crazyants have theability to sprayformic acid whichcauses burningand irritates theskin and eyes ofhumans and animals. Yellow crazyants are present in Queensland andon Christmas Island. Any of thesespecies could accidently be importedinto WA. Unfamiliar ants or antssuspected of being transported infreight or cargo, should bereported to the Pest andInformation Service on 1800 084881. For ant identification services,

THANK YOU to everyone who hasdonated supplies, money, food for the

vets or just offered their support duringthis difficult time our towns and

communities have faced. We continue tooffer free treatment to all animals

injured or affected by the fires. Some willbe in our care for at least another monthfor treatment for burns. Thank you for

your support, everyone at WaroonaVets.

What a month it has been foreveryone. As I sit here writing this atthe tail end of our town’s part of anatural disaster it is hard to believe amonth has gone by. In the wake ofthe devastation I think we can beproud of how our communities andthe wider Western Australiancommunity have rallied around thosein need including those with no voice– our animals. When Ron and Idecided to stay we didn’t knowwhether our clinic or our home wouldsurvive the fires. On the second nightwe were really worried. But we werethe lucky ones; we escaped with nodamage to our business or our home. But what eventuated was many werenot so lucky. Early on when we hadno power (and no phones) we took tousing social media to communicatewith the public. We were open allday, every day and late into the night, every night, for that first week. InitiallyDr Ron was the only vet in the firezone and was out straight awaycalled out to euthanase so manyburnt cattle that we unfortunatelynearly ran out of bullets. When DrBec finally was able to get throughthe road blocks we finally had twovets running all over the country sideattending burnt sheep, goats andhorses. Back at the clinic my nursesand I were coordinating the relief

treat all fire affected animals for free.We normally only treat wildlife for freebut in this case we extended it toeveryone affected. Then the mostamazing thing happened - we sharedour stories on our Facebook pageand the donations started rolling in.Our wholesalers donated vital drugs, other vet clinics sent us bandagesand wonderful people from as faraway as the UK sent us monetarydonations. My beautiful clinicneighbour Tiffany Wood brought usthe most amazing sandwiches topack our fridge, people dropped offcakes and biscuits to keep us going. We felt overwhelmed by the supportand I can remember breaking downin tears at the generosity. Iremember my beautiful trainee nurseSam did an interview with a nationalnews service and within 15 minutesof the story going up on the internet Ihad to ask Sam to stop takingdonations. It was amazing. We stillhave animals in our care now whichwill need at least another months’worth of bandaging but are sothankful for the support we havereceived. This support allows us toprovide the best care possible tothese animals and has also allowedus to treat cattle and livestock at nocost to farmers who have lost somuch already. From all of us, ourmost heartfelt thank you.

effort – tonnes of dog and cat food aswell as all kinds of stock food andsupplies for all kinds of animals camepouring in. In the early days nurseHayley became the hay queen helpingorganise where vital hay donationscould go and who needed them. Mystaff were all going above and beyond. My trainee nurse Peta took time off herpaid job to come down and help everyday from the beginning of theemergency. We also worked withformer staff members Kellie and Clareto get animal’s attention in Yarloop withthe ladies running all over the placepicking up everything from alpacas tochickens and getting them to the clinicfor treatment or just getting food andwater out to who needed it. What wasunfortunately absent was wildlife. Thefire was so fierce and so fast that veryfew stood a chance. The first joey wesaw was burnt beyond help and washumanely euthanased. We started togive up hope but once people started toreturn to their homes the wildlife camepouring in. Burnt possums, many, manyjoeys, all kinds of birds with smokeinhalation that had been falling out ofthe sky, all came through our doors. I’mhappy to report that at least 90% of thewildlife we saw we could treat and willmake full recoveries. Between badlyburnt cats and bandaging joeys andsending out vets, we were run off ourfeet. We committed straight away to

I live at McLarty Street (West),Waroona (we call it the last street outof town to the right), and I feel verylucky that we still have our home, asour yard has all large charred markseverywhere, where the fire tried to takeour yard and home from us. All my potplants and hoses in the middle of mybackyard are all melted and other bitsand pieces, burnt patches are rightclose to our house. When I open myback door and look up at the adjoiningbushland, it looks like Armageddon, aseverywhere you look in any direction, isall black and charred and lifeless. Theold Nestles Factory (as most peopleknow it), somehow doesn’t look quiteright, as there are bits missing from theroofline, and the old house that was onthe factory ground (just at the back ofus), is burned down to the ground, andonly two chimneys remain. Our shedhas burn marks all over the side of it,and a rug that was on a lounge chairinside the shed, has melted patches onit, proving how hot the fire was againstthat wall inside the shed. My son’swork bench just outside of our shedhas been burnt down and only themetal frame remains, he had newtimber and steel on top of the benchthat is all gone. On the 6th January, weheard that Lane Poole was on fire, andwas a little bit uneasy about it, but notalarmed, as it seemed like the fire was

Thank You to the Firees & My Neighboursa long way from us, though we keptmonitoring it on DFES. By thatafternoon, we started to get glowingembers coming down into our yard, thesmoke was so thick that you couldbarely see anything, the wind wasferocious and from our back yard welooked east and saw an almighty glow.We knew it was time to leave, thoughwe had no warnings at that stage, it justmade common sense to us that thiswasn’t good. I grabbed my handbag, mobile and keys, and my son and I leftWaroona, not knowing whether wewere going to have a house to comehome to. We stayed at my sisters inCoolup and didn’t sleep at all that night,we saw pics of the fire on Facebook, and one photo in particular caught ourattention because it was of our shedand in the background the old house atthe factory, was on fire. We then knewthat the fire was close to our yard andhouse. The next morning we went toPlacid Ark in Coolup (which stayedopen all night for the emergencyservices to use), and met some of theweary Firees that had been battling thefire all night at Waroona. They told usthat they have saved our town, but itdoesn’t look pretty, and also told us thatno houses had gone down as far asthey knew, which was good becausewe figured that our house was stillstanding and held onto that hope. Theywere very modest when I thankedthem. What we didn’t know at thatstage, was that around 2.00 thatmorning, our neighbours looked over toour yard and saw that it was on fire andrallied up other neighbours to comeover and put the fires out, which savedour house. We needed to go toMandurah, and upon returning, wewere blocked at the round-about justout of Pinjarra, and were not allowed toreturn to Coolup, though that was notconsidered under threat. We werediverted to the Murray Rec Centre. Wefelt very displaced, though I cannot fault

anyone at the Rec Centre as they(volunteers) were all so wonderful andhelpful, we met a lot of people fromWaroona. However, my son felt toouncomfortable to stay overnight at theRec Centre and dipped into his smallsavings so we could stay at thePinjarra Caravan Park for a fewnights, as well to buy us more mobilecredit, we needed to keep in touchwith family and friends, who werekeeping us going. We kept goingback to the Rec Centre to find outinformation, which suddenly becomesimportant in the face of a disaster, wewere also treated to meals. Butunfortunately at that stage, they wereunable to provide any clothing for usto change into, so we found someclothing on sale at one of the localstores in Pinjarra. I had no toothbrushor toothpaste for 2 days, but suddenlysomehow along the way ended upwith 4 toothbrushes and 4 tubes oftoothpaste, I still don’t know how thathappened. At the Rec Centre, I metsome of the unfortunate people fromYarloop that lost their homes andcould only but hug some of them. Iwished that I had lots of money todonate to help them. A few days later,we were able to return to Waroona, and even though our house is old andwonky, we never felt so good to see itagain, even though it has charredmarks everywhere in the yard, andmelted things. But it has thememories of my son growing up,photos, his first tooth that he lost atone year old, all my achievements asan artist, all the artworks of my son’sFather that he lost to cancer a fewyears ago. But still, we feel lucky, westill have our home, and we thankEVERYONE that has been involved inthis mammoth disaster that I willnever, ever, forget. You are myHEROS!!! CONSUMER PROTECTION COLUMNWith Consumer Protection SW Regional Coordinator Debbie ButlerBuying vouchers can be a gift for retailers

The gift card industry is a growingone. We used to purchase giftvouchers directly from the shop orbusiness where they would beredeemed, but it is now commonplacefor department stores andsupermarkets to have a variety of giftcards for other places on display nearthe till. In 2015 Consumer Protectionreceived 74 complaints about giftcards/vouchers, with 30 coming in thefirst quarter of the year, post-Christmas. We regularly highlight, through the media and social media, some potential problems with giftcards or vouchers. One of the issueswe frequently warn of is businesscollapse, which became a reality formany Western Australians whenelectronics retailer Dick Smith wentinto receivership on 5 January 2016.Holders of Dick Smith gift cards, manyof whom had received theirs as aChristmas present, becameunsecured creditors when voluntaryadministrators were appointed. Anyclaims for the outstanding dollar valuemust be lodged via a hotline or emailaddress (Phone 1300 853 481 [email protected]). If payment was made by creditcard or by selecting ‘credit’ with adebit card, Dick Smith gift cardpurchasers can contact their creditcard provider and request achargeback. Unfortunately this

opportunity does not exist for thosewho paid by cash or eftpos. Dick Smithgift cards bought from Coles,Woolworths or Big W can beexchanged for a gift card of equal valuefor that particular supermarket or store, subject to proof or purchase beingprovided as part of a redemptionprocess. Consumer Protection’s newposition, in light of the Dick Smithscenario, is that Western Australiansshould consider only buying giftvouchers with credit cards or byselecting ‘credit’ on a debit card, sothat chargeback is an option if thebusiness goes bust. We also want thecommunity to think about whether it isbetter to give cash as a present or agift card that can be redeemed at anumber of outlets (some shoppingcentres sell these vouchers and theycan be used at a variety of stores withinthe complex). Cash may seem lesspersonalised than a gift card orvoucher but the receiver is guaranteedto be able to spend the money and willnot be restricted by terms andconditions or an expiry date. If you aregoing to buy a gift card you have to askyourself if you know for certain that thebusiness is not in financial trouble andwill still be around for the voucher to beused or spent without restriction. Forexample when Laura Ashley’sAustralian clothing and home waresstores went into administration on 7January 2016 the requirements for

redeeming a gift card changed. LauraAshley gift card holders are nowrequired to spend double the facevalue in order to redeem it e.g. spend$200 in store to redeem a $100voucher. Sometimes the prospect ofa business winding up will bepredicted in the media, such as withinthe business section of a newspaperor website, so it’s worthwhile keepingup-to-date with what’s happening inthe marketplace. Staying informedcould save you dollars by alerting youahead of you buying a gift card froma troubled retailer, or letting you knowthat a gift card you have receivedcould soon become worthless.Generally we recommend that anyonewho receives a gift card shouldredeem it as soon as possible afterreceipt. It’s believed Australianretailers make hundreds of millions ofdollars from unclaimed vouchersevery year, with consumer surveyssuggesting in excess of three out often people forget to use their gift cardbefore the expiry date. One way toprevent this is to download ConsumerProtection’s free app iShopWA anduse its gift voucher expiry datereminder function. Consumers withcomplaints relating to gift cards shouldfirst try to resolve the issues with thebusiness in question and in the caseof unresolved disputes contactConsumer Protection by email:[email protected] or by

In The Lions DenWell another New Yearand another disasteras rampaging firesspread through the

area for the second January running, again sparked by a lightning strike.Tragically on the Friday night, 7th

January, under the influence of strongwinds, the fire broke containment lines, turned South and wiped out most ofYarloop, destroying 110 homes, historicbuildings and the railway yards. Thefiries brought their own catering thistime but the fire had also burnt down500 power poles. Western Powerdrafted in a team of 250 plus workersto get to work on restoring power andrebuilding the infrastructure and theWaroona Lions Club were asked tocook and supply breakfast and lunchfor them everyday, including Saturdaysand Sundays for 3 weeks. ProjectLeader, Lion Phil Turner, the samemember that had led us while feedingthe firies this time last year, immediately mobilized us into action atJim’s Kitchen. It became a massiveoperation involving supply of ham andcheese toasted sandwiches, toastedbacon and egg sandwiches, hamburgers, steak burgers, 3 pieces offruit, two bottles of water, 2 bottles ofPowerAde and a muesli bar for all 250plus workers everyday!! 25 of our 32members were utilized as well as manywives, daughters and friends andvolunteers from the town of Waroona.A minimum of 8 to 10 people wererequired every day for 2 shifts, breakfast prep starting at 5.30 andlunch at 8.30, as well as a team ofrunners making trips to supermarkets, cash and carries, butchers and bakersfor supplies. A truly titanic effort byeverybody involved so “THANK YOUEVERYBODY”.Because of the fires, we had to put alot of other things that we’d planned todo on hold…..the demolition of our oldstorage shed, the launch of the LeosClub (for the second time) and a visit toour club by the Mandurah Lions Club.At least it will give me lots of interestingthings to tell you about in the next issue. One of the positives that came out ofthe fire disaster was that the Channel9 TV station came to town; to stage partof their special benefit TV show “W.A.Stands Together”. The crew set up atthe Waroona Fire station, set up a bigscreen TV in the back yard, invited thetownsfolk to come and watch and enjoysome food and drink and interviewedmembers of the local volunteer fireservice, as well as special guest W.A.

celebrities, the West Coast Eagles’Matt Priddis and Matt and Kim from“The Block”. The Lions were invited aswell and several of us attended and wewere on the schedule to be interviewed. However, as we were not due to be onuntil close to the end of the show andmost of us had to be up at 4.30am thenext morning to cook breakfast forWestern Power, sadly, we had to leavebefore they got to us. It was still a goodshow though and raised over $600,000.

Lions Australia Day Breakfast

THE TEAM THAT COOKED AND SERVED BREAKFAST (left to right),ANDREW PATON, KEVINO’BRIEN, GARY WITNEY, REEGAN DAVIS,JAYLEN ANZELLINO, MIKE WHITNEY, BENNY GOODMAN, MANDYFERGUSON, LISA FRY, BOB FERGUSON, LENA DELEO, LYNLEY YOUNG,JEN DELEO, LARRY SCOTT, DOM DELLA-FRANCA, YOUNG MATT FROMPINJARRA AND GRANT HEWETT.

The next major event in January wasof course the Australia Day Breakfast.Again the fires and Western Powerdisrupted our plans for this as wellbecause normally it is held at theMemorial Hall and we had to relocateto the Recreation Centre. As we werestill feeding the Western Power crewsfrom Jim’s Kitchen, it created a realchallenge for the Lions, as it meantthat we had to deploy two differentcooking teams, one at Jim’s and oneat the Rec Centre. Nevertheless, ourmembers really pulled out the stopsand a total of 20 Lions, familymembers and other volunteers turnedup to help at the Rec Centre whilePhil Turner still had a team of 12down at Jim’s. In spite of the venuechange and the difficulty incommunicating that (not everybodyhas Facebook!), we still attracted over200 people for breakfast. It was agood morning for the Lions as a fewof us were involved in the CommunityAwards. First of all, there was PeterReynolds who has been a Lion for 35years as well as being involved inmasses of other voluntaryorganisations and projects includingWaroona Senior High School, theJunior Cricket Club, a returning officerfor the West Australian ElectoralCommission, member of the MasonicLodge Waroona and Harvey for 32years, Vice Chairman of the WaroonaCommunity Resource Centre and iscurrently in charge of organizing thefunding and organizing events for theHigh School student’s Western Fronttrip to Belgium and France later thisyear. Then a community award wasalso presented to the VintageMachinery committee, an

incorporated partnershipbetween the OldMachinery Club, WaroonaLions and Waroona Shirethat organizes and stagesthe Waroona VintageMachinery Rally each yearon the oval in September. Finally with the advent ofthe Waroona / Yarloopbush fires disaster, theWaroona Lions Club havebeen heavily involved in allsorts of aid, support, fundraising and fund gathering. Here’s asynopsis of our involvement: -Lionssupport initially kicked in with animmediate $50k Recovery Grant which

has been issued out as vouchersto those directly affected by thefires. These can be redeemed atlocal businesses for goods andservices to help people get backon their feet. During the first fewdays following the fire, we helpedout by checking on pets andlivestock left behind as peopleevacuated the town. We havealso housed 3 families at ourMyalup Pines Village at no costwhile they wait to find permanentaccommodation or for

permission to move back into Yarloop. As road closures started to reopenafter the fires, we started to receivedonations of goods from as faraway as Mt Newman. Our shedsquickly filled and we had to ask peopleto hold off sending any more. Allgoods donated have been pooled withthose received by the Shire so thatthey can be distributed to those in

need. The Club has receivedmonetary donations from other LionsClubs and individuals, which we areputting towards specific projects suchas Blaze Aid, the volunteer group whowill be setting up in Waroona to helplandholders rebuild fences. Our ViceDistrict Governor Grant Hewett, whois also an extremely active member ofour club, is working with the LionsClub of Harvey and both Shires to seewhere we can best assist withadditional funds and direct support forthe victims on an ongoing basis.Emergency assistance grants of up to$1500 per adult and $500 per childare available through the AustralianLions Foundation. Those seeking further assistanceshould approach the Shire first asthey are coordinating the distributionof emergency funds. The Power of Blessingequipment that was rushed to our aid,for all the agencies that providedservices, for the help that this regionreceived (and is receiving) from nearand far in all sorts of ways, for thekindness of friends, families andcomplete strangers, for the lives thatwere spared, for the properties thatescaped damage, for the ability andhelp to repair and rebuild, for thethoughts and prayers of people - notjust locally - but from all over the worldand for many other blessings toonumerous to mention here. Beencouraged to ‘count the manyblessings’ that we have received, despite the circumstances thatresulted from the fire. Be encouragedto express thankfulness to GOD, thegiver of blessings andto those who gave somuch of themselvesthat others might beblessed. There is‘power in the blessing’of a grateful andthankful heart. Beblessed to be ablessing, Cheryl.

There ispower in theblessing of

being gratefuland thankful. Inour Bibles, theApostle Paul

encourages usto give thanks in all circumstancesbecause it is GOD’s will for us to doso (1Thessalonians 5:18). It issurprising how our spirits soar whenwe shift our focus from the difficultsituations and circumstances of lifeand concentrate on the blessings wereceive, despite them. In trying timeswe can tend to forget the goodnessof GOD and HIS blessings but as theold Church song says ‘count yourblessings’ and you might besurprised what the LORD has donefor you! The following lines takenfrom the three verses of the songinspire us to firstly - ‘recognise theblessings and their source (ourLORD);’ secondly - to be encouragedto trust and not doubt’ for our spiritsto lift and thirdly - ‘to reassure us thatGOD will help and comfort us all the

days of our lives’:- ‘Count your manyblessings, name them one by one,and it will surprise you what the LORDhas done.....Count your manyblessings, every doubt will fly, and youwill keep singing as the days goby.....Count your many blessings, angels will attend, help and comfortgive you to your journey’s end.’ As thefires have subsided, it is good to shiftour focus from the stress and traumaof such a catastrophic event and to‘count the blessings.’ (Even at the timeof writing – almost midnight! –Monday, 18th January - the rain issteadily falling! Now that is a blessingto be counted with grateful thanks!). Itis sad that the fire has caused loss oflife and property and many hearts arehurting in our region. But the outcomecould have been much, much worseand we are so thankful that it wasn’t.We are grateful to GOD for our localvolunteer fire-fighters, for the careerfire-fighters that came from all over thestate and interstate, for the wonders ofmodern technology that put waterbombers in the air to douse theflames, for the expertise and the

Photography Tips with Stuart McLellanHello, well NewYear is over thestart was reallytraumatic for someand I hope you are

all recovering from the terrible fires, aBIG thanks to all the volunteers whoworked so hard to protect us. It’s timeto get into some distraction and funwith photography now and there aresome interesting photographs to betaken, this month I want you to playwith “ISO” or you may remember it“ASA” you know the old film speednumbers like 200 film or 400 for nightshots. All digital cameras still use ISOnumbers to determine how sensitiveto light the sensor is and also howfine the grain of your image, althoughtoday it’s called noise. The ISO you

choose depends on the situation –when it’s dark we need to push theISO up to a higher number, sayanything from 400 – 3200 as this willmake the camera more sensitive tolight that way you can avoid blurringand use no flash either. It works likethis the higher the ISO number youchoose the more sensitive to light thecamera is therefore the highershooting speed you can use, alsoremember to open your lens e.g.small F stops like F1.8 or F3.5. anexample could be at night in yourhouse with minimal lighting use 2000iso f-stop of 3.5 at 250th sec no flash, the results might surprise you, but trylots of combinations of the samepicture as there is no set rule it’s allexperimentation, conversely in bright

sunlight use iso of 100 or less andyou can increase the F-stop more. This technique is a fun way to createreally interesting and artistic picturesthere are no set rules you need to trylots of combinations, trust me therewill be lots of failures but that’s all inthe fun of photography.

WAROONA POULTRY CLUB

Waroona Poultry Club has startedplanning for the first pencil birdauction on Sunday 20th March 2016at the Poultry Club Pavilion. A busybee has been scheduled for Saturday12th March 2016 at 10.00am to cleanthe pavilion ready to showcase theauction. Immediately afterwards ameeting will be conducted by thePresident Laurie Snell and potentialnew members are most welcome toattend. The club is looking for moregeneral assistance to ease theworkload on the Executive. Ourthoughts are with the local communitywho experienced losses in the recentnatural disaster the“Waroona/Yarloop/Cookernup BushFires and especially those withpoultry losses. A member located inNanga Brook Road area lost herwhole Pekin Flock of 18 Show birdsto. Respiratory Distress caused byheavy smoke from the fires and justmanaged to save a couple of otherpoultry. Not sure if they have startedegg production again as well to date. The WPC has a hotline of LaurieSnell (0419 044 085) and KenLandwehr (0409 680 456) for anypeople affected in the fire zonewanting to replace poultry impactedby the Bushfire. Former ClubSecretary and vet nurse, KellieDerosa has been working overtimealong with Waroona Vet Clinic Staff torehabilitate injured animals includingpoultry and arranging foster homesfor chooks to be cared for in the shortterm. It is hoped to conduct a PoultryMini Show exhibition on Sunday 20th

March immediately after the PoultryAuction finishes. This will be part of afamily day which will be discussed ata special Executive meeting ofWaroona Agricultural Meeting onThursday 28th January 2016;following a generous offer by theShowman’s Association to have aCarnival Festival for the localcommunity in the aftermath of theBush Fires. More details whenfinalised in the March edition of theDespatch. Best wishes always fromthe expanding group of poultryenthusiasts.

Chook Yard Farmer KenIt is with anextremelyheavy handthat I put pento paper afterthe second

consecutive year January Bush Fireshave chosen to leave a lasting legacyon the Waroona District as well asdestroying Yarloop and majordamage in the Cookernup area aswell. Chookyard Hotel was one of thelucky ones with only one nice GoldLace Wynadotte pullet suffering fromrespiratory distress and another henSparkle currently under treatmentafter developing a cough despitecaring for her five chooks.Renovations on Chookyard Hotelhave stopped for 3 weeks due to thefires and the extremely hot weatherand thanks to the Project Managerand friend PJ it is now taking shapewith all the framework now fullyerected over last weekend. Was ableto donate some 40 kg of Wheat whichwas a Christmas present from aspecial friend and the bag of layingpellets which I won as a prize forproducing the champion egg at theBrunswick Show to No. 1 Vet NurseKellie Derosa who is coordinatingrelief supplies by those localsimpacted by the terrible bush fire. Two nice size Air Freight Boxes alsoa Christmas present from youngerbrother Neil delivered to her farmpatio which is overflowing with goodsto be gifted to a Yarloop family inspecial need. A great temporaryhome. So proud to say I am aWaroona Local with a special interestin Poultry as a hobby and thegenerous spirit of locals helping eachother despite extremely challengingtimes in the past three weekstogether with new horizons in thefuture. Was so lucky my daughterCaitlin Rose was booked in forAnnual Leave for 5.5 days during thefire period  and we managed tosmuggle her in past the Pinjarra roadblock with her car registration havinga Waroona address and turning thedocument upside down whenshowing she was essentially aWaroona Local. Made me  proudwhen she sent a personal e mail tothe 777 Pharmacy Directorsrequesting help for the WaroonaBush Fire Appeal who respondedimmediately and to request tins in allthe 777 Pharmacies in the first twodays of the fire. On her days off shecollected a car full of goodies whichwas delivered to ST Vincent De Paull

on the following Tuesday morning. The next trip was to Wokalup on theFriday via the back way to deliveranother car load of items incl most ofher Glory box to a young couplewhose rental property went up insmoke in Yarloop and to see thegratitude in their eyes was veryrewarding .They own HarveyStockfeeds despite their own personallosses were acting as a depot for Hayand other donations to be distributedor collected by local farmers. Lizhelped me with my Arauncanabreeding programme when I firstwanted blue eggs 18 months ago anddespite two young children wasalways available for advice. Mohawkalong with her two hens Athena andLizzie are a major part of my breedingprogramme winning prizes at bothWaroona and Brunswick Shows. Bestwishes to  Liz and Daniel in theirrecovery and with no  local deliveriesallowed with Yarloop and the SamsonBrook Bridge wiped out at dead manscorner their Stockfeed business againhas felt further pain impacting on theirlivelihood. In 2015  the ChookyardFarmer slept thro the fire with no FireAlert being received on the mobilephones until woken up at 6.00am butno such luxury this year staying up till1.45 am hosing down the house andboundary plus areas aroundChookyard Hotel. On Wednesdaymorning both good neighbours re-constructed fire breaks in the morningthe fire started in Lane Poole Reservewith good fortune so we felt safedespite the fire jumping from McLartyStreet into the 2nd Fairway of the GolfCourse and the corner of Hill Streetand Mclarty St. In dad’s old propertywith the Fire Crews quickly on the job.500 metres is miles too close andthanks to the fire bombers attacking ingroups of three Waroona was againextremely lucky in comparison toYarloop. You could hear explosionson the first night and the whole townwas bracing for another disasterwhich proved much worse than lastyear. Drakesbrook Weir is in the directflypath of Chookyard Hotel anddespite non stop for two weeks it wasa way of keeping the birds and localson their toes knowing those waterresources were still working overtimeto save our town and beyond.Unfortunately it is unsafe to fly atnightime. Sold 8 young birds atMundijong Markets last Wednesdayand need to move some more stock inthe next six weeks. Cannot wait till thefirst poultry club auction on Sunday

20th March 2016 to allow locals topurchase some heritage breeds forlocal chicken lovers. Three bantamsCollie Black, Gretel and Red Devilhave all gone clucky with new chicksdue at the end of January and earlyFebruary. My marketing ManagerCaitlin will be working overtime onFacebook with photos and  love theschool holidays with an extra pair ofhands for the ice blocks and waterroutine. Cannot thank Western Powerenough for the Emergency Generatorswhich enabled freezers to operateagain and make ice blocks which keptthe residents of Chookyard Hotel aliveand cool whist recovering from theBushfire. Eggs are still being laideverywhere and Sapphire a PolishHen has taken to laying in the coolplanter box area on the front porchand the wood Shed continues to be afavourite spot. It is 55 years since theDwellingup Fires in 1961 and twocousins the Moore Family lost houseson the right hand entry into the town.Burnt the first home, missed thesecond and hit the third home. Wewere holidaying in Albany at that timeand trust in my lifetime we don’t haveto experience another fire disaster likethis year. The birds seem to handle itbetter than the owner and the secret isfree range and out of harms way fromsmoke, ash and  debris with coolhiding spots in Walls Orchard oraround the house. Off to the vet nowto take a beautiful Polish/Arauncanafemale chick named Apollo  the vet toendeavour to cure a Brain disorderwhich is hereditary in Polish with thinskulls and is not another disordercalled Wry Neck. Worth a fightingchance which was not given to a lot oflocals in the recent bush fire naturaldisaster. Special Praise to CaptainJohn, the Local Town brigade, BushFire Units and the other 300volunteers fire fighters that put theirlives at risk during this horrible time.Words cannot express the pain youare all feeling but Waroona is a greatsmall rural community and we willbond together as we head into thefuture. One family friend at theAustralia Day breakfast said it waslocal people like Mike Walmlsley, MattWard, Mike Leroy and many othersthat saved most of his farm and hishome. Hopeyour chooksare back layingagain and takecare. Ken

THE GIRLS AT NUMBER 13Before wecommencetalking about ourdaily exploits, ourthoughts are withthose whosuffered theravages of thedevastating firesthat consumedYarloop and the

surrounding areas of Waroona andbeyond. In addition, some of ourfeathered cousins perished in theblaze throughout the region. Ourthoughts and hearts are with all thoseaffected. Recently Harriet, our NewHampshire sister, has taken up theact of flinging lettuce leaves onto herback thus enabling others to comeand start nibbling away at the leaf! She just stands there while theothers have a good feed. Then whenHarriet moves off, flapping her wingsin the process, the lettuce leaf falls tothe ground. Wouldn’t you think thatHarriet could just stay where she wasand let us have a good feed, but nonot Harriet! Has to have things herway! Dad wasn’t permitted into theyard the other day until he cameback with the bucket to fill our pellettrough. We all clustered around thegate and demanded Dad to takeresponsibility of us, instead of lettingus fade away to a shadow! He gotthe message quick smart, and wentback to collect the bucket and filledour pellet trough to the brim. We girlshad to take prompt action to get a fairdeal here, we can tell you that! Dadcleanedout ourhen housea fewdays ago, understrictsupervision ofcourse!Nothingpasses our beady eyes. Hilda, ourPekin sister, chose to remain in oneof the nesting boxes. She just wasn’tgoing to budge for anyone! Puttingup a full line of resistance, squawkingand raising her feathers inannoyance and pecking at Dad’shands, he managed to extract sixeggs from under her belly. Then itwas Hilda’s turn to be lifted off thenest so the fresh straw could beplaced there. We must admit it alllooks very nice. Dad does a goodjob, cleaning the interior walls as well

as the concrete floor. It wasn’t longbefore some of us started investigatingDad’s handiwork to see if it was up tostandard. Fresh straw had beenshaken out in all the right places. OneSaturday afternoon, which was hot andhumid, we had to warn Dad of a snakethat had decided to make an unwantedvisit. Didn’t even tell us its name!Quite rude really! Slithered along pastour back yard entrance and headingfor Dad, who we might add, was totallyoblivious to its presence. Giving ourdistress signal, Dad’s attention wasalerted. Before Dad came back withthe shovel, our unwanted intruder hadvanished through a crack in the fence.Over the last couple of weeksHildegaard our Blue/Black Australorpsister has taken a distinct liking toDad’s toes. Heavens know why, histoes are not edible! However everytime Dad ventures into our yard,Hildegaard manages to take a quickswipe at Dad’s toes. She obviouslyhas a strange fascination with them!Harriet has been moulting quite a lot,and Hester has taken it upon herself tomanicure Harriet, keeping herremaining feathers well groomed.Harriet seems to enjoy the attention, and just lays on the sand beingfastidiously worked on by Hester. Wehaven’t asked how much Hestercharges, but you can bet your bottomdollars it wouldn’t be cheap. Oh no,Hester is after every bit she can get! These hot days are great to gatheraround Hetty’s pool and paddle in themuddy water and cool off. Dad gaveus some Basmati rice and brown ricemixed together as part of ourbreakfast. We have our own Romatomatoes from the vegetable patchwith our favourite lettuce too. Hillary

gave Hilda a run for her money theother day. Chasing Hilda around theyard at full speed, Hillary took acorner too sharp and ended up onher belly skidding along the sand. She narrowly missed the fence andgot up, shaking herself but clearlyannoyed that Hilda had lived to seeanother day! Perhaps her oil needsa change, who knows! One morningwhen it was raining recently, we alldecided to have a conference in thehen manor house. Of course Dadturned up like a bad smell wanting toknow why we weren’t outside in theyard. What’s it got to do with him?Anyone would think he owns us! Wewere quite enjoying some qualitytime together, some of us laying onthe straw and others in the nestingboxes, or sitting on the perches.Giving him a look to shove off, he gotthe message and left us to get onwith things. Men, they have somestrange ideas! With the heat comingin, we haven’t been quite sointerested in laying eggs for Dad togoo and gush over. He still getsenough, but we don’t have to exertourselves just to be in the goodbooks. Well that’s our understandingof the enterprise bargainingagreement! Thankyou for readingour news and we hope to have moreinterestingevents to tell youabout nextmonth.

Until then, happydays to all of you.

February 2016 Page 29A Vegetarian Cafe arrives in Waroona

Did you notice? Just prior to thefires, a new Café quietly openedin town on Coronation Road. Ofcourse it was very quiet whenthe power went off and not reallythe disruption a new businessneeds, but the ‘Hairy Lentil’slocal proprietor& chef MarkTimms, says “its all good” and isnow back to regular business.Curious to find out what it wasall about I called in to ‘StickyBeak’ and was given a warmwelcome by Mark  and he washappy to share the ideas behindthe cafe; “ Hairy Lentil is allabout offering the freshest, healthiest food we can achievewith the lowest ‘food miles’,using the best local ingredientsas much as possible. We are aVegetarian Kitchen that alsooffers Vegan, Raw and Gluten

Free food. As well, we are alsoslowly filling our shelves withlocal products and produceand hope to get lots moregoodies on our shelves as webelieve ‘local is best’.Naturally tea, coffee and otherdrinks are all part of it. We aretrading at this stage onWednesday to Friday from2pm til 7pm, and Saturday andSunday 9am to 3 pm. Thesehours of course will change inthe future as we get moreestablished and are openlonger eg. earlier for lunch. We will also be offeringcooking classes in the futureand this will include thingslike Vegetarian Cooking,Getting the Best out of yourDehydrator, just to name afew.” So it seems the plan isfor this to be more than just acafé, and listening to Mark it isobvious that he has a clearvision for the business, extensive experience in thetrade and strong familysupport.  Adding variety towhat is already available intown, and opening a business

that eschews the very latest infood trends should onlyimprove Waroona as adestination for visitors andhopefully bring some extra lifeto our town after the recentdevastation. My impression isthat we have our first reallytrendy café, that would sitcomfortably in any leafycosmopolitan suburb…aren’twe lucky!!

The season hasnowrecommencedafter theChristmas/NewYear breaksalthough theWomen’s team

is yet to play a game. For the firstgame of the month against Yunderupon the 12th January, we had to canceldue to the fires but Yunderup verynobly split the points with us 3 all, especially as they are currently top ofthe league. Then the following weeks’game at Port Bouvard was rained off, resulting in another sharing of points. As a result of all of that, the Ladiesremain at 4th on the league table. Thetwo Men’s teams continued on their

diversified courses. The Saturdayteam winning 96 to 59 against CometBay at home with comprehensivewins by Benny Goodman, DomFerraro and Dean Hunter’s teams. This was followed by an 85 to 74 winaway at Mandurah, the followingweek, leaving them top of the leagueand one point clear of Halls Head insecond place. The Tuesday teamreceived another thrashing 80 to 42by Pinjarra and remains bottom of theleague and a worrying eight and a halfpoints behind the next placed team.Community Bowls also recommenceson Wednesday 3rd February and aftermuch debate, will remain at teams offour and not revert to triples. Also, congratulations are in order for BennyGoodman, Bob Clark, Mark Hiller and
