We Made it Home! First KGVI at Newport

The first KGVI week took place at Newport from 21 - 27 July 2018 in glorious summer weather. It was a real privilige to have the young people at Newport bringing much laughter, fun and encouragement with them. We pray that this is the beginning of a long legacy at our Newport Training, Conference and Residential Centre. Congratulations to our new Leaders pictured above who completed their second year. The Boys’ Brigade Northern Ireland District ‘Made their Way Home’ on a sponsored 35 mile walk from their previous Head-quarters Rathmore, in Larne to their newly renovated home at the former Newport Primary School in Culcavy, just outside Hillsbor-ough on Saturday 23 June 2018.

NI District Vice-President Rev Dr Trevor McCormick and District Trustee Drew Buchanan MBE led a small but mighty band of walk-ers, some walking all and some walking part of the 35 mile route; making their way from Larne to Carrickfergus, along the Shore Road to Belfast City Centre then via Lisburn to Culcavy. The BB Fundraising team led by Trevor McCormick initially set a £400,000 fundraising target for Newport back in 2014. Three years later and after many fundraising initiatives including filling Smartie tubes with 20p coins, a cycle challenge, concerts, dinners etc the final target to clear the building and renovation debt at Newport is now just £7,000; once raised this will conclude the Newport Opening New Doors Appeal. The total amount invested in New-port including purchase is £800,000.

Speaking about the Making it Home fundraiser, lead organiser and walker Drew Buchanan said: ‘I have over 54 years’ experience in Boys’ Brigade since joining the then Robins as a young 5 year old in 108th Belfast Company. I feel honoured to be a part of the transformation of Newport and to play a small part in equipping future generations of boys and young men to continue leading this great organisation. This walk has been a great challenge for me personally and I want to thank all who have supported me and the team today.’

The Annual Queen’s Badge Presentation Ceremony took place at Wellington Presbyterian Church on Friday 18 May 2018. A total of 219 boys received the Queen’s Award this year. IMPORTANT! New Consent Forms - GDPR compliant: Following the introduction of GDPR it has been necessary to review the way Brigade Companies capture data. Therefore Bri-gade is introducing a new Annual Information Form and a Joining Form, to replace the current Annual Consent Form. They are also introducing functionality on OBM to assist with capturing data and recording photo consent. You are advised to use these new forms for BB even if you previoulsy used a Church consent form.

The Joining Form should be completed for all new members (children & young people) joining the organisation from the 2018-2019 session onwards.

The Annual Information Form replaces the Annual Consent Form. Much of the data captured on this form will be similar to that which was collected through the Annual Consent Form and should be used from the 2018-2019 session onwards. Guidance on the use of these forms is available to download along with the new forms from the Brigade website.

AccessNI Brigade UK has asked us to remind our NID Leaders about this new procedure from Access NI. Our colleagues in Felden are still receiving a number of ID validation sheets from NI without the required photocopies of ID.

AccessNI has updated the ID validation sheet. The list of accept-able ID documents has been revised and split into 3 groups (1, 2a & 2b). From 1st May 2018 the new version of the form must be used and any previous versions destroyed. IMPORTANT CHANGEAlso from 1st May 2018 it has been a requirement for copies of the ID documents to be attached to the ID validation sheet and forwarded to the Support Team at BBHQ in Felden. Staff at Felden are required to keep the copies for 90 days following the issuing of the disclosure certificate. The copies will then be destroyed.

Leadership RegistrationBrigade Regulations require any adult to be fully registered and AccessNI checked before working with young people. This applies to all Company, Battalion, District Leaders, Helpers and Chap-lains. Please ensure your Company and Battalion comply with this important regulation in our Safeguarding process. Leader Registra-tion forms are available to download from the Leaders’ section of the Brigade website. Please contact [email protected] if you have any issues or queries with Leader Registration.

Staff Changes at NewportDawn Boyes and Richard Nelson joined the NIHQ staff team in June. Dawn is our Receptionist/Admin Assistant and works every day from 2 - 5pm. Richard is the Centre Manager and Finance Officer. This follows some restructuring at NIHQ. We said a fond farewell to Matthew Gallick in April and wish him well in his new job. Alison Irvine has reduced her hours and stepped down from the Centre Management part of her role. She will be focusing on Support Work and Communications. Alison will not be available in the NIHQ office on Wednesdays and will be working half days on Mondays and Fridays.

Congratulations, to Nathan Davis from 1st Bluestone Methodist BB Company, on receiving the President’s Commendation. This special award is in recognition for dedicated commitment to BB, Church and community, despite ongoing health issues. Nathan has also gained his Queen’s Badge and Silver DofE Award and was part of a Fields of Life overseas outreach team, that travelled to Uganda in July 2018. Perry Donaldson, Honorary Brigade Vice President visited 1st Bluestone and presented the Commendation on behalf of the Brigade President, Rev Dr Leslie Griffiths; Lord Griffiths of Burry Port.

We have a free Disability App available on Android and Apple. Please search for Boys’ Brigade Disability. The app gives quick, basic information for youth leaders on 25 different disabilities that affect children and young

people, to help BB companies be inclusive places for everyone. Hard copies of the information are also available from NIHQ and the information can be accessed on our website.

The Northern Ireland District of BB is a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) Licensed Organisation. Over the last three years NID has supported over 1,300 young people to start their programme, and over 800 BB members have achieved a DofE Award. We are very grateful to all of the BB Leaders who have encouraged and inspired the young people on their journey. The President’s Badge and The Queen’s Badge can be linked in to a DofE programme and young people can then receive both Awards. Many activities in the Discover and Challenge Plus programmes are a great basis for DofE sections.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) develops young people for life and work. It helps them to fulfil their potential and have a brighter future. For many young people, the impact can be life-changing. If you enjoy a challenge and would like to help young people develop the skills and attitudes they need to suc-ceed in life, then you’d make a fantastic DofE Leader.

If you would be interested in offering DofE through your BB Com-pany we would be delighted to hear from you. Full training and support is available. For more information please contact [email protected]

30 years of Outdoor Expedition and Leadership training recognised...Pictured above right: 29 trainees from BB and GB took part in a brilliant weekend in the Antrim Hills on the outdoor expedition and leadership training in April. This year marked a milestone for Stephen Creber, who celebrated a commendable 30 years as a level 2 course leader; just the excuse needed for a party in the hills with buns and candles to mark the occasion! All on this course trained and prac-tised over the summer for the September assessment weekend. If you would like to learn the skills to manage groups in the outdoor, please register now for a place on the 2019 Outdoor expedition and leadership course. The next round of training will be: Training week-end 3-5 May 2019, Humphrey’s at Rathmore | Assessment weekend 20-22 September 2019, Rocky Mountain Centre.

UK Parliament Week is a UK-wide festival that engages people, especially young people, with Parliament and empowers them to get involved. Your event can be big or small, public or private. There’s no limit to how you take part, from holding a debate or

mock election, to organising guest speakers or even an online event. When you register to take part you receive a free UK Parliament Week partner kit with resources to help you run your event including: an activity booklet, a ballot box, bunting, posters, pin badges, a UK Parliament Week placard and a suffrage sash! Once you’ve taken part and filled out the evaluation form, you will also receive a free Vote 100 woven badge, especially for Boys’ Brigade members. Progress at Newport

Tourist Board registered Training Conference & Residential Centre at NIHQ Newport now open for business. We are delighted to announce that we are registered with the NI Tourist Board as a Hostel for group bookings. We are taking bookings from outside groups as well as Boys’ Brigade Companies so please spread the word! We have residen-tial accomodation sleeping up to 40 in dorm style rooms and have training and conference facilities along with lots of outdoor spaces for car parking, activ-ities, and a barbeque/picnic area. For booking enquiries please contact the Centre Manager: [email protected]

We want to encourage you to submit photos of company activities, events, competition winners and other special achievements. Company photos greatly enhance all our publications and help us to show the breadth and variety that BB has to offer. To maximise our ability to publish your photos in a timely way it would be helpful if you could check the following points before emailing to [email protected] 1. Permission: With every photo(s) we require you to print in the email

body the following statement: ‘I have written parental permis-sion, for all young people under 18 featured in the pho-to(s), to forward the attached picture(s) to NIHQ for wider BB use.’ Please note the new Brigade GDPR compliant parental consent form, referenced on page 2, separates permission for company use and wider BB use.

2. Size: Minimum of 300 dpi at 2000 x 1500 pixels - (approx 7 x 5 inches). 3. File format: Attach to email original unedited Jpegs. Do not insert

photos into the body of the email or word document. 4. Labelling: Please include captions left to right in the email body and

label the image file with something that will identify the photo to us in NIHQ - example: 1st Moneymore_Nat_football winners_2018 .

5. Composition & Subjects: a. Pictures should be well lit and in focus. b. Please feature your young people and their achievements; young peo-

ple should be the main feature in the photo. c. Avoid a bland row of people; try to get interesting camera angles. If

your company has raised money for a cause try to show in the picture what the money will be used for, rather than a cheque presentation.

d. Close up pics are best with a maximum of 5 or 6 people; the exception being a team pic or full Company/Section pic.

Submitting photos to NIHQ for publication

As we approach a new session of The Boys’ Brigade we want to pause and pray for the opportunities that this session will offer.

Dear Lord, we pray for our children and young people who will return to BB. We look forward to reconnecting with them and hearing about what has been happening in their lives during the break. We pray for those who have been faced with challenges and struggles during this time. Thank you for the opportunities that they have had over the summer through camps, holiday Bible clubs, youth weeks, missions and other outreach events. We lift before you those who will not return to our BB family - that they will know God’s blessing and we ask for opportunites to reach out and re-connect with them.

We remember those who are joining Company Section this year; giving thanks for the time they have enjoyed at Junior Section. Please help them to settle into their new section and enjoy the new experiences; we think of them at this time as they move to their new school after completing Primary 7; asking for new and strengthened friendships for them, and that any nerves or anxious feelings are given over to you Lord.

Heavenly Father we pray for those who have received examina-tion results in recent weeks and those young people who are now starting to embark on a new adventure through work or university. In particular we think of those who are moving away from home and pray that they know your comfort and presence at this time of change.

We pray for our youngest members as they join BB for the first time - giving thanks that you have led them to BB. We ask that as they begin their BB adventure in Anchors that they will enjoy BB, get to experience new things, meet new friends, learn more about you and get to know you as their Saviour. We pray for them as they start Primary 1 and as they settle into their school.

Above all we thank you for the amazing opportunity to serve You, build relationships and expose your living word to advance your Kingdom. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Free Bible Study Resourcefor Company Section Members

Following on from last years Time Out, study of John’s gospel this year we again have free copies of Time Out based on Acts. This follows the same layout as the previous one with the text of Acts laid out telling the story of the ear-ly church, their obedience to the words of Jesus and the widespread transformation that followed.

Following the teachings of Christ in the midst of hopeless situations and endless hardships, the first believers were set apart by their

courage, conviction and outrageous compassion. Prepare to be challenged and open to join the adventure of radical obedience. Time Out is provided free because of the support and sponsorship of various organisations including The Boys’ Brigade Northern Ireland District. There is one for every Company Section member in NID. Please contact NIHQ to arrange to pick up your copies.

New Refreshed Look Leaders’ Website!

There is a new Leaders’ website being launched soon by Brigade. This may create some difficulty finding information during the transition period. We are working with our colleagues in Felden and hope to have a clear signpost on our new NID ‘Regional’ page at www.bbni.org.uk/leaders to our downloads section and other key pages. The site will look quite different and the key change to finding what you are looking for will be to use the search function. We will post updates in our e news on Facebook when we have more insight to the new layout.
