eDItORIALInspire a Generation

What a marvellous summer. From the wonderful celebrations of our Patron’s Diamond Jubilee, to the awesome achievements of the Olympic and Paralympic Games each of us will have

our own particular memories. For me it was the finals of the Men’s Olympic 100 metres and the Men’s 4 x 100 metres. At the time I was with the seniors of the Company on our school building project in Jamaica. As we crowded round the TV with a hundred Jamaicans the atmosphere was amazing and the joy in victory tangible and we were welcomed as family into the celebrations.

This was, of course, then matched by the inspirational achievements of the Paralympians as we witnessed day after day of supreme effort and the shattering of world records.

The spirit of the games was real and drew together many. In no small way the silver baton carrying Her Majesty’s message to The Boys’ Brigade has done the same as individuals, Companies and Battalions have come together to convey the message throughout the British Isles. To witness the pride and excitement of the children and young people involved reminded me of the London Game’s motto “Inspire a Generation”.

Thank you for what you do week by week as you inspire a generation. In Corinthians we are reminded that the prize we strive for is “Greater than Gold” and it is that which is our inspiration and that which we seek to share. May God richly bless you and your Companies during the coming session.

uite simply our target is boosting membership by 10% in 2012, to do this we really do need everybody’s support. If your Company, Battalion or

District has not got involved to date then there is still time, we would encourage you to take a look at the resources available and set a target and plan what you are going to do.

Around this page you will see some quotes received from those that have already been getting involved! There are lots of ideas as well as resources to help you in your recruitment on the Ten Percent in 2012 page on the BB website, check out www.boys-brigade.org.uk/tenpercent2012/

As part of The Boys’ Brigade “10percentin2012” the Strathkelvin Battalion has held a couple of successful recruitment days, one at Kirkintilloch Fire Station and one at the Annual Canal Festival. On each occasion a team from the Battalion was on hand to raise awareness of the several Companies in the area. At the Canal Festival there was a great deal of interest from families living locally and there was even a query from young people from Carlisle.

The Olympic games what a great summer of sportFrom the Olympic Torch Relay, to the Olympic Games and onto the Paralympic Games it’s certainly been a summer to remember. BB Companies across the country have got involved in a number of ways and here we share just some of what has been going on...

3rd Yeovil. Nigel Stocker, Captain of 3rd Yeovil, was selected to be one of the Gamesmaker volunteers. He was based along Park Lane, close to Hyde Park and his role was as a T3 driver transporting members of the Olympic family between sporting

venues, hotels and airports. Martin said “Although I spent many hours waiting at the kerbside chatting to other Gamesmakers waiting for passengers, experiencing the atmosphere of the games especially at the Olympic Park and meeting so many interesting people from all over the world was something I will always remember.”

1st Market Weighton. Tom Clayton, Captain of 1st Market Weighton carried the Torch during its route through Thirsk in North Yorkshire. Tom said “The experience was utterly incredible and surprisingly emotional. One of the greatest privileges has been sharing the

experience with children and young people in schools and BB Companies in Scarborough and Market Weighton”.

7th Newcastle. Gordon Hawkins, Captain of 7th Newcastle, carried the Torch on 15th June during its route through Newcastle.

Pictured is Johnson Beharry VC when he visited the BB Garden at the National Memorial Arboretum.

1st Chester le Street. Daniel Miller, carrying the Olympic Torch during its route through Durham. Daniel was nominated for the honour for his work with WhizzKidz,

for whom he is an Ambassador. Also pictured are members of the Junior Section enjoying a sports night during which Daniel went along for them to see and hold the Torch.

133rd London. Paul Osborne, officer in charge of the Junior Section from 133rd London (Haringey), carried the Torch along Wood Green High Road London on 24th July. He was nominated for 20 years’ service as an officer by his work colleagues at Lloyds TSB. Paul said “I thoroughly enjoyed my ‘Moment to Shine’ and I would never have believed that when I joined the BB at the age of 13 I would ever get to take part in a once in a lifetime event like this, but thanks to the BB I did, proving that anything is possible”.

Enfield Battalion. On 25th July when the Olympic Torch went through the London Borough of Enfield. Members of the Battalion were there to cheer on the Torch bearers and soak up the fantastic atmosphere as it passed Winchmore Hill Baptist Church, home to the 10th Enfield Company.

1st East Peckham. David Boyle, a Lieutenant in 1st East Peckham, carried the Torch when it was rowed in a barge on the River Medway in Maidstone before his run began.

200th Glagow. Craig Jardine from 200th Glasgow carried the torch on Saturday 9th June through the Clydebank area of the city.

Diamond Jubilee Baton RelayOn Tuesday 14th August members of The Boys’ Brigade from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales accompanied by the Brigade President, The Lord Griffiths of Burry Port met HM The Queen at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

The young men delivered a message of loyal greeting from members of The Boys’ Brigade and received Her Majesty’s gracious reply.

The young people representing the regions were James Scott (Northern Ireland), Alex Mann (England), Adam Morris (Wales) and Greg Williams (Scotland).

After leaving Balmoral Castle Her Majesty’s message started out on its journey being carried throughout the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland by members of The Boys’ Brigade. Companies were challenged to come up with different ways of carrying the baton and over the next few weeks it was carried on foot, by cycle, roller skate, speed boat and milk float among others.

Events and activities had been arranged to mark the baton reaching different towns and cities, and in many areas the

Lord-Lieutenant or other local dignitary greeted the young people carrying the baton.

The baton travelled from Scotland to Northern Ireland, and then via the Republic of Ireland, Wales and through England before finally reaching Brigade Council on Saturday 15th September 2012. At Brigade Council, The Brigade President received the baton from Alex Mann who was also present at Balmoral Castle where the Baton started its journey 33 days before.

The baton being used in the relay was first used in 1935 when the Brigade conveyed its message to Her Majesty’s grandfather King George V on the occasion of his Silver Jubilee and later in 1951 to King George VI in celebration of the “Festival of Britain”.

Now we follow the Baton Relay from setting off at Balmoral Castle to arriving in London and being received by The Brigade President...

President opened the lock and Council stood to receive Her Majesty’s reply to the Loyal Greeting on the Occasion of Her Diamond Jubilee.

Mr Michael Elliott, on behalf of the England Region, welcomed members of Council and Lord Griffiths replied thanking those who had worked to put the event together. Council stood in silence to remember those who had died during the year. Mr Chris Row presented a review of the year and Mr Clifford Bygrave, Brigade Treasurer, presented the accounts for the financial year.

There then followed the statutory business of Council, the results of which are reported elsewhere. Following this there were presentations about the International Project “Behind Tourism”, and the planned recruitment drive “Ten Percent in 2012”. Before Council concluded with worship, Mr Glen Miller, on behalf of the Northern Ireland Region invited Council to meet in Belfast in 2013 as part of the 125th anniversary celebrations of the Brigade in Ireland.

There was no formal programme in the evening and delegates either made their way home or enjoyed the entertainment of London.

On Sunday morning Worship was held at Wesley’s Chapel, the home of the 5th London Company and of the Brigade President.

Thanks are expressed to all those who contributed to the arrangements for Council.

Brigade Council met at Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church in London slightly

later in September this year because of the Paralympics. This was the second year of holding a one day event although a Dinner was arranged on the Friday evening.

On the Saturday morning delegates contributed to the formulation of the next development plan at a session hosted by Mr Chris Row, Brigade Vice President along with the Brigade Secretary, whilst others were entertained by a walking tour of the city.

Brigade Council assembled at 1.00pm when opening worship was conducted by Rev’d Mark Van Cuylenburg, Minister of Fulham Baptist Church. It is customary to receive greetings from our Patron at the start of proceedings, but this year, of course, had a special significance when Alex Mann 28th West Kent, a member of the party received at Balmoral, brought in the baton that had just completed its epic journey throughout the British Isles. Jesus, a light that ‘cannot be extinguished’

Paul had taught this young man, then he expresses his trust in him to shine, believing that Timothy has not only experienced God’s grace in life but that he would have God’s power in his service.

Following the example of Paul and Sir Steve Redgrave do you ‘look forward with hopefulness’ in your work in The Boys’ Brigade? In the middle of a session what is your level of ‘excitement and expectation’? Let us remember that we have a light that ‘cannot be extinguished’ – Jesus, the Light of the World, who came from heaven to shatter the darkness of the world with the good news of God’s love for us. What a glorious light to pass on to our young people! May we be able to say humbly and honestly ‘what you have heard from me keep as the pattern’ so that lives will radiate with God’s grace and for His glory.

t was an evening when one unexpected spectacle followed another to the extent that many who watched the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games could not pick one favourite highlight.

Was it ‘Mr Bean’s’ musical contribution? Or the James Bond episode with Her Majesty? Or was it that part of the programme that had been the focus of much speculation ‘who would light the cauldron’? As the moment to reveal the secret approached, David Beckham was in the speedboat – it wasn’t going to be him. Sir Steve Redgrave had the penultimate leg from the river into the stadium – he wasn’t going to light the cauldron.

With anticipation rising the lights focussed on not one but seven figures – few, if any had predicted that. The commentators revealed that these young people had been identified as potential heroes of the future. It was to be their ‘moment to shine’ with a lap of the stadium before stooping to light the magnificent cauldron with a petal representing every competing nation at the games. The organisers had kept the secret and surpassed all expectations.

Sarah Edworthy records, ‘The Olympic flame is particularly emotive because it represents something that cannot be extinguished, a sense of looking forward and hopefulness... The Torch Relay, taking the form of a human chain passing a force for good from person to person, stokes excitement and expectation for the world’s biggest peacetime event.’1

The Apostle Paul knew what it was to look forward with hopefulness when he counselled his young friend, Timothy, to ‘fan into flame the gift of God’ which is in him. Timothy had professed a personal faith in the redemptive work of Christ, following in the pattern of his mother, grandmother and Paul. Then, in the role of mentor, the Apostle says,

‘What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.’2

Pictured with Trevor is his son Jonathan who carried the Olympic Torch in Londonderry on 4th June.

“super segway”Cadets at KGVI this year had the opportunity to participate in a great new activity, Segway. Having been made aware of safety and a short time of instruction, cadets were soon mastering the balance technique that made the Segway move forwards, backwards and for the really talented, sideways.

Under the watchful eye of Wesley and his dedicated team, cadets were timed negotiating an activity course and then zigzagging through cones in a time trial. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience with many saying it would be a great activity for Company Section and Seniors. Segway is suitable for those aged 10+ and Wesley can be contacted at Segway NI on 07764448673 or by email at [email protected]

the Big night OutThe Big Night Out 2012 was held at Lightwater Valley. Nearly 2000 young people from BB, Urban Saints and various churches from the north of England enjoyed a great time in the park followed by a brilliant concert by The Chip Kendall Band.

The Big Night Out in 2013 will be held on Saturday 11th May and information will be sent out towards the end of the year, but please put the date in your diary.

the Boys are Back in town: Brigade Celebrate 125th Birthday Members from 12 Welsh Boys’ Brigade Companies joined together on a camping weekend over the 15th to 17th June to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of The Boys’ Brigade in Wales. Held in the Gower, Swansea, more than 150 people attended the event to celebrate the milestone anniversary.

Over the course of three days attendees got involved with various activities including games, parties and surfing, giving Company leaders and young members the chance to mix with others from across Wales.

Mr. Andrew Eccleston, Chairman for The Boys’ Brigade in Wales, said: “Despite poor weather conditions the camp proved an outstanding success with all the young people taking part in the many activities on offer, both indoors and outside.”

The camp afforded The Boys’ Brigade in Wales the chance to

thank its volunteers for their efforts in making a huge difference in the lives of many of members past, present and future. “Many of our current members attended and were rewarded for all the good work that has gone on,” continued Andrew.

The following Boys’ Brigade Companies attended the camp: 16th Cardiff, 21st Cardiff, 31st Cardiff, 34th Cardiff, 1st Caerphilly, 1st Penarth, 2nd Barry, 2nd Llantwit Major, 1st Blackwood, 2nd Blackwood, 1st North Wales and 5th Swansea.

Minister at KGVIThe Scottish Government Minister for Children and Young People, Aileen Campbell MSP, met the record number of cadets taking part in this year’s KGVI Young Leaders course at Carronvale House.

Speaking after her visit she said, “It is great to see so many young people offering their own time so that others can experience the

fun and exciting times they have shared in The Boys’ Brigade. These young volunteers are giving other young people the chance to expand their horizons, build confidence, learn new skills and express their views hrough creative, sporting and cultural activities.”

The centre at Badaguish, run by the Speyside Trust, is ideally located and while it is delighted to host Boys’

Brigade camps, its objective is to provide 24 hour holiday respite care for children with disabilities.

One of its main fundraising events is the Corrieyairack Challenge, a 43 mile duathlon from Fort Augustus over the Corrieyairack Pass to Kincraig. Described as Scotland’s toughest Mountain, Duathlon with a hill section of 17 miles and a cycle section of 26 miles, the route follows one of General Wade’s military roads which was completed in 1731 over the Corrieyairack Pass and rises to 775 metres at its highest point. To put it into perspective, this road was described as ‘demanding and difficult to cross on

horseback’. That was said in 1731 – and it’s never been repaired since.

In support of this event, for many years now, senior boys from 1st Skene have given up the first day of their camp to man remote water stations, including at the summit and the bike change over point. The boys, who all witness the great work undertaken at Badaguish, have always benefitted from this experience and their efforts and support are always well received by the competitors.

This year they went a good bit further and in addition to volunteering the usual support, a team of seven officers and two senior boys entered the event and joined the other 350 competitors at the starting line. The great news is they all completed the course and raised £1,880 in sponsorship. One of the younger

officers, Michael Christie, finished in an impressive 15th position in a time of 3 hours 36 minutes while our first senior boy home, Calum Ross, was in overall 38th place (and first Junior) taking 4 hours 2 minutes to complete the course. Overall, this year’s event raised in excess of £43,000 which will help provide over 230 respite care places at Badaguish.

1st Skene is proud of its long association with the Corrieyairack Challenge and will be back next year. Anyone wishing to join us can find more information on this event at www.corrieyairack.org. Photographs of this and the rest of our camp can be viewed on www.1stskenebb.co.uk

In July this year, myself and Iain D’Arcy were fortunate enough to be involved in a BB International Exchange of young officers with

Dorothy Wu and Wilson Choi from Hong Kong. BB Hong Kong is a fast-growing organisation of over 12,000 members with a strong emphasis on the more traditional aspects of Boys’ Brigade life. What we were not prepared for was the immense energy, warmth, welcome and passion for sharing Christian faith that we encountered.

We arrived in Hong Kong on a hot and muggy evening and were driven through the city to arrive at Gateway Camp. This is a week-long event with 1400 young people held in Hong Kong as a mission training preparation before many of them would go to mainland China to help with projects and missions. BBHK had over 60 young

officers and NCOs acting as staff at the event. Our first impressions of Hong Kong were of a bright and bustling city that never sleeps and in which every building is at least 30 storeys high. Hong Kong has a population of 7 million with an average of 16,500 people living in every square mile.

Our days were packed with visits to Companies and meeting people. We also took the ferry to meet the BB in Macau (the other of China’s Special Administrative Regions, a former Portuguese colony). With both regions being formerly occupied by Western governments it was very interesting to see how Western culture has influenced the BB way of doing things in that part of the world: though the kilts that Iain and I were wearing seemed to cause fascination, we quickly learned that BBHK has a burgeoning pipe band culture!

A highlight for me was meeting BB

members in their Companies. On one particular visit we were invited to lunch with a whole Company. I ended up sitting at a table of Anchor Section children who took much time and patience to teach me Cantonese words for all the colours and foods they could think of. When we visited the 61st Hong Kong we were greeted with hand-made cards with individual messages inside. At that time we were also gifted waterproof jackets, which we thought were bizarre for the 35°C heat outside. It turned out to be a very apt gift: within hours we experienced an Asian typhoon. It was the worst they have had in 14 years; with rain bouncing to knee height and wind that blew air conditioning units off the side of buildings, we were forced indoors for 24 hours!

My lasting impressions of BBHK will be of the friendship and hospitality we were shown. I was also moved by the energy and enthusiasm of every member’s Christian faith commitment and the way in which that underpins absolutely everything done in the organisation there. It left me feeling incredibly encouraged and thankful for the work of the BB worldwide and amazed at how our BB experiences can function a language for fellowship and cultural learning all across the globe.Andrew Kimmitt

The youngsters with their awards (L-R) Nathan Veale, Francis Howell, Rebecca Goldsworthy, Jacob Colgan and Luke Grigg.

In August we were privileged to attend this year’s Global Fellowship workshop in the beautiful location of Ngong Hills, Nairobi, Kenya. We were warmly hosted by the local community at the Watakatifu Wote Senta

and involved in a programme of events, assembled by Boys’ Brigade Kenya. The theme was “Fingerprint” which not only looked into our own personal

identity, but also the identity of the national organisations that we represented. It was very interesting to explore why we are who we are and how our social background affects this. There were 10 countries present: United Kingdom, Denmark, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Benin, Australia, Rwanda, Uganda, Sierra Leone and Ghana.

We joined in with a church service at a local Presbyterian church offering a very different style of worship than we were accustomed to. This was followed by a number of presentations to us from the BB/GB children, displaying their local culture.

We all shared many ideas about our youth work looking at the difficulties and challenges facing each of us at home.

We also visited a wild animal orphanage and a show demonstrating the dances and lifestyles of the traditional tribes of East Africa at the Bomas of Kenya and went into Nairobi city, which was a very vibrant and exciting place to be.

In summary it was a truly life changing workshop which not only challenged us to think about our own identity, and the fingerprint we leave on the world, but also enabled us to build a network of global friends which we hope to treasure for many years to come.

Members of Cornwall Battalion recently took part in ‘Operation Independence’, a demonstration to The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall of how young people can take important roles in times of disaster.

The scenario on the day was set in Lostwithiel near the site of last year’s catastrophic floods where five scenarios were re-enacted: everything from filling sandbags, registering victims, providing support and first aid, clearing damaged house goods and providing temporary shelter.

The exercise was the culmination of a six month programme where five selected members of the Battalion were trained (alongside 35 young colleagues from other organisations), both within their local companies and over a residential weekend at Predannack Airfield near The Lizard.

At the end of the demonstration the youngsters were each presented with the Duke of Cornwall Community Safety Award by Their Royal Highnesses, who took time to talk with the youngsters about their role and how proud they were of what they have achieved. Their Royal Highnesses were most knowledgeable about the difficulties in recruiting new officers and the challenges faced. As a final boost, the youngsters also received a personal letter from the Chief Constable of Devon & Cornwall Police congratulating them on their efforts and providing a reference for future use.

The Duke of Cornwall Community Safety Award is now being rolled out across all youth organisations in the county as a pre-cursor to the new Prince of Wales Award, details of which are expected soon. Below are two quotes from the young people involved:

“It was such an exhilarating experience. Their Royal Highnesses had lots of time to socialise with the young people. It was an honour to meet them both. It was an amazing day and out of this has come many friendships.” Corporal Becca Goldsworthy, Cornwall Battalion.

“I would just like to say how much of a pleasure and honour it was to meet Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. Prince Charles is such a nice man and had plenty of time to chat to me and have a laugh. Had a completely awesome day!” Sergeant Francis Howell, Cornwall Battalion.

Network Trip to Copenhagen

After the short flight to Denmark, we landed in the Danish capital and were

warmly greeted by members of the FDF – Denmark’s equivalent to The Boys’ Brigade. We stayed at Rysensteen, the FDF’s Headquarters, located in central Copenhagen, which made an ideal base for exploring.

On our first evening we enjoyed a great meal out before setting off in groups with full stomachs on a city challenge, set by the staff who managed to stay warm and dry with a coffee while we explored in the pouring rain! Some teams did better than others, with the more ‘creative’ answers being rewarded!

Tuesday was our only full day in Copenhagen and we made sure we took full advantage of it. The sun was shining and we set off on foot to see more of the wonderful city. Our hosts from the FDF were our tour guides and filled us with local knowledge as we wandered the streets. We started by enjoying a view of Copenhagen on top of the ‘Round Tower’ before going on to see Rosenborg Palace and the Danish crown jewels. Next stop was to see the famous Little Mermaid and she

certainly lives up to her name! Everyone even managed a photo with her without anyone falling in the water!

Our afternoon was spent on a harbour boat tour through the city, allowing us to see the colourful Nyhavn and the stunning Royal Danish Library, known as ‘The Black Diamond’, while soaking up the sun! We then had some free time to explore more of the city on our own, with some even enjoying the culinary delights on offer... with a McDonalds!

Tired legs made their way back to Rysensteen, where FDF members had prepared a wonderful traditional Danish meal for our final dinner in Copenhagen. The food and banter flowed between BB and FDF members alike, and they became not only our hosts, but also

our friends. Our final adventure was to experience the incredible Tivoli Gardens. With restaurants, shops, games and a theme park, there was plenty for everyone to enjoy, with a few brave souls even going on the rollercoasters after our Danish feast!

Our final morning was spent saying our goodbyes and travelling home. The friendships formed on our Copenhagen trip, amongst the group and with our wonderful hosts will last a lifetime, as will all the amazing memories created there. Good food, good laughs, good friends and in a fantastic setting, what more could you want? So where to next year Bill...?

The aim of the project was to offer support to The Boy’s Brigade in the Caribbean

Region as well as to exchange culture and a shared willingness to put into practice the vision of The Boys’ Brigade. We aimed also to challenge the perception of the Caribbean as simply a place for holidays, focusing on the people who live in the exotic ‘capital of paradise’ as well as the real challenges faced by an island society, which like the UK/RofI has faced many challenges coping with a more globalized world.

With many similar challenges that face young people in the Caribbean, such as the temptation of crime, risky behaviour and falling church attention, The Boys’ Brigade continues to play a big part in integrating young people in Christian life.

We visited and camped at the Bon Accord Primary School on the Island of Tobago and were generously received by the Caribbean Regional Fellowship, we stayed for a fortnight and participated in all the camp activities, leading some and sharing others. We learnt that although the beaches of Tobago were of course fantastic that there is still much for the Brigade to do to reach out to young people and help them remain true to the Christian faith.

From sharing in fellowship, to

The BB international team visited the island of Tobago on the 13-24th July 2012, as part of the Behind Tourism Project

participating in regional meetings deciding the future direction of The Boys’ Brigade in the southern Caribbean – we were able to offer our perspectives on our work with boys and girls back home in our Companies - while learning of both the challenges and the creative solutions of Companies in the Caribbean.

We had a great opportunity to also lead a day of the camp, and to discuss different ways of working with boys with

leaders from the Caribbean, we lead an exciting day from the morning physical activities to water games and team games in the afternoon. Our presence at the camp also allowed us and those participants from the Caribbean islands of: Antigua, St Kitts, Trinidad and Tobago to reflect on our belonging to The Boys’ Brigade and international movement connected by a central idea of the advancement of Christ’s kingdom.

Cameron:“This summer’s trip was definitely more of an experience than a holiday... we set out to look ‘Behind Tourism’, and that was exactly what we achieved. From turning up to find that we had nowhere to sleep, to playing barefoot football with poisonous frogs on the pitch, it was certainly a world away from Camp in the UK. Those culture shocks aside, we had a fantastic trip. The cultural exchange that we had with everyone that we met was fantastic, and if the responses we received were anything to go by we’ve hopefully made a real difference, albeit in small ways. I really hope that we can achieve the next stage of the project now, and bring a small group from the Caribbean back to the UK/RofI, as I truly believe that it will make a real difference to everyone who gets involved!”

Jordan:“Our trip to the Caribbean Island of Tobago was, all in all, a real eye opener. Not only did we experience real Caribbean culture, we were also able to form relationships with young boys and officers alike, each representing different parts of the Caribbean. The term “culture exchange” was often thrown around before our Caribbean visit, perhaps without fully understanding what it meant. However, it became quickly apparent that we would learn about the Caribbean culture, out of choice and necessity. Our first steps off the plane in Tobago were greeted with a wave of humidity and the infamous Caribbean heat. The food provided for us at the camp provided a real insight into the delicacies enjoyed across the Caribbean. Simply put, everything was spicy! From mango to chicken, from sauces to rice, they enjoyed their spicy food. The meal times, the sleeping patterns, the organisation of everyday activities were all extremely different from the UK/RofI Learning about the Caribbean culture came as an inclusive part of the trip and I will look forward to meeting the party returning from the Caribbean in order to share some starkly different culture.”

The project of course does not finish now that we have returned home. To further the exchange of ideas, goodwill and faith among the UK/RofI and our Caribbean brothers we aim to bring a group of young leaders back here next summer.

We hope that you too will be able to support us and share information about our project, and use our free resources which are available on our website at www.behindtourism.org.uk

DePARtMent FOR COMMunItIes AnD LOCAL GOVeRnMent ReCOGnIses the VALue OF stRuCtuReD YOuth WORKThe Boys’ Brigade is a member of Youth United which is a coalition of voluntary uniformed youth organisations that support young people as they develop into active citizens by providing exciting and worthwhile activities within a structured and safe environment. The network has been meeting since 2009 to look at ways to make it easier for young people to choose to access the fantastic opportunities the organisations offer, to improve the image of young people by recognising the positive impact they have in society and to learn from members’ experiences.

The Government has recognised the fantastic role that member organisations play in society and has offered the opportunity for them to deliver its Supporting Inclusion Programme. This programme is part of the Department for Communities & Local Government’s (DCLG) Integration Strategy to promote social mixing among diverse groups within a community, to foster a sense of belonging and community cohesion. The programme aims to increase the number of young people participating in structured activities, focussing on communities where historically there has been less engagement and volunteering, linking young people and adult volunteers from different backgrounds. The programme is targeted at hard to reach young people, particularly those who might not have chosen to access organisations such as BB and is focussed on Birmingham, Bradford, Burnley, Burslem, Knowsley, Hackney, Haringey, Manchester, Middlesbrough, Newham, Redbridge, Redca,r Rochdale, Tower Hamlets and Tottenham.

Youth United was chosen for programme as the member organisations provide a diverse range of opportunities for young people. Each organisation is well established but by considering them as the Youth United partnership they produce a range of activities to attract a wide cross section of society. DCLG worked with Youth United to develop a business case which sets out that Youth United organisations and membership of them develop integration and inclusion amongst communities. The case was strong and was chosen by government as it would deliver good value for money and success in achieving their strategic outcomes. These aims will be achieved through setting up new Youth United units (400), recruiting more adult volunteers (2,700) and providing more places for young people (10,800).

The BB has been awarded a grant to employ seven development workers for a period of 18 months two based in Manchester, two in Birmingham, two in London and one in Middlesbrough & Redcar. These workers will be looking to start new units in all of the priority areas laid down in the grant and will not be available to work outside those areas.

This grant offers the BB a fantastic opportunity to connect and reconnect with communities where we are under-represented. Please pray for this exciting programme that it bears fruit and that it helps to transform young lives.

Jordan Harrison of the 1st Bridlington Company was presented with the President’s Commendation by Mr Mike Dixon, Battalion President, on the 14th June 2012.

The commendation was presented to Jordan for the courage he has shown and the challenges that he has faced.

Jordan collapsed at school due to disease in the bones in his legs. He has spent a lot of time in hospital and been in a great deal of pain. However, on his release from hospital he immediately supported the Company’s fund raising efforts whilst being on crutches and then completed a ten mile expedition practice, again with the aid of crutches.

Jordan has shown great determination and commitment and his perseverance is an inspiration to all.

Gavin McCabe of the 4th Clydebank Company was presented with the President’s Commendation by Mr Gordon Littlejohn, Battalion President, on the 8th June 2012.

The commendation was presented to Gavin for the courage he shows and the challenges he faces and overcomes.

Gavin has been in the 4th Clydebank Company since he joined as an Anchor Boy and despite difficulties has worked his way up to the rank of Corporal and has gained his President’s Badge. His service, boundless enthusiasm and perseverance throughout his BB career plus his positive, cheerful attitude and enthusiasm is an inspiration to all who know him.

The presentation was made at the Company’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, which attracted a great deal of support from former members and included the unveiling of a new stained glass window.

The Secret Diary of Alexander Williams, Captain of the 1st Nowhere Company

October 2012

As October dawns, the prospect of a nother Batta lion Fou nder’s Day chu rch pa rade swims into view. Whatever other diff icu ltie s

the science of meteorolog y might fa ce, there is one eterna l truth i n the f ie ld of weather-foreca sti ng: it a lways ra ins on Batta lion

Chu rch Pa rades. And this, i n my experience, is a truth which is a ppa rent to even the you ngest member of the Ju nior Section.

I have tried, over the yea rs, va rious strategies to circumvent the astonishing a rray of excuses deployed by those whom I have

invited, encou raged, bribed or (on one occasion, probably best forgotten) simply ordered to attend these events. I have waved away

cla ims that the service will be “boring.” I have scoffed at the suggestion that Company Section members might be seen by their

friends on the way to chu rch in u niform. (The rhetorica l “And at what time do you r friends usua lly get up on a Sunday morning?”

is, in my experience, a crowd-silencing riposte to this one). I have negotiated in deta il the tra nsport a rra ngements in order to

demonstrate that it is possible to attend a Batta lion Chu rch Parade a nd still get home in time to see the ea rly Premiership match

on Sky. But I have never been able to persuade a nyone that it will not ra in. Some facts speak for themselves.

There a re, of cou rse, ma ny who dispensed with Batta lion Chu rch Pa rades yea rs ago. Or, at lea st, they ca nce lled the idea of a ny

form of prior outside a ctivity. However, i n the Nowhere Batta lion we pride ou rse lve s on ou r traditions a nd we a re not the type

to be de feated by a spot of ra in.

Or so I had thought.

For then I noticed the suggestion made by ou r Batta lion Secreta ry i n his most recent missive. This yea r, he expla in ed, we

wou ld not be forming up in a n open squ a re i n the centre of town in the ra in, trooping down the street i n the ra in, a nd then

squ e lching into chu rch where we wou ld generate so much stea m that the lens on the projector wou ld get misted up. On the

contra ry. This yea r we a re to experiment with a n a ctivity weekend away for Compa ny Section a nd Seniors, which wou ld

include a short service on the Su nday morning – prepa red by va riou s leaders themse lve s.

As a company which has not been to camp since my predecessor retired a nd you rs tru ly fou nd himself in the wrong pla ce at the

wrong time, I read this with some consternation. It may be u nfortu nate to organise a chu rch pa rade on the one weekend of the

yea r when you ca n gua ra ntee ra in, but to organise sleeping u nder ca nvas that very same weekend begins to look like ca relessness.

So I re-read the message with some ca re. The pla n, I discovered, was to head off to one of these re sidentia l centre s where

experts la y on the a ctivitie s a nd you ca n stay in a bed a nd not on a n a ir mattre ss. The staff pre sent were to come together

to pla n a service for the Su nday morning while the you ng people were ha nging upside down on a rope cou rse on the Satu rday

afternoon with some input from the chapla in from one of the la rger compa nie s i n the Batta lion.

As I looked up from the e-ma il, I cou ld see the su n trying to pierce the a utu mn cloud. Perhaps, after a ll, you ca n have a

Batta lion Chu rch Pa rade a nd stay dry…

The 1st Nowhere Company and the events which happen there are entirely fictional.

OBITUARIESWe pay tribute to BB members who have died during the last few months and thank God for their faithful service to the Brigade and church and their witness in the community.

JOAN ALEXANDER (62) was an officer in the 1st RAF St Athan Company, based at St David’s Church on the RAF Camp. Joan also helped to start the 2nd Llantwit Major Company and for a time was Company Captain. She served as an Officer until summer 2010. Joan worked tirelessly as a chapel elder at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Ecumenical choir and of Llantwit Ladies’ choir. Joan was a lovely lady, full of life and she will be missed.

SAM CROTHERS (89) joined the 28th Belfast Company (Agnes Street Presbyterian) as a boy, going through its ranks to become its Captain. He was well known throughout Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland not least for his untiring work within the Stedfast Association. He was an active founder member and President of the Association. Sam was an Honorary Vice-President of the Belfast Battalion to which he gave a variety of service, especially in band work. He was loved and respected, within the family of The Boys’ Brigade, his career and in his role as a Church Elder.

SIR CHARLES FROSSARD, KBE, (90) has always been closely associated with The Boys’ Brigade. He followed his father, Dean Frossard, as Chaplain of the 2nd Guernsey Company based at St. Mary’s L’Islet, the mission church for the Parish church of St. Sampsons. He became the first President of the Guernsey Battalion, which was formed in 1970. When he was installed as Bailiff, despite his duties, he found time to remain not only as President but as a friend and ambassador for the BB in Guernsey, in all for 42 years. Members of the Brigade in Guernsey express heartfelt thanks for his influence.

G. MALCOLM PEARCE. MBE, FCA, (86) began his BB career in Cathays Methodist Church. In parallel with his successful professional career as a partner in Price Waterhouse Coopers, Malcolm dedicated his spare time and energy to youth

work. He sat on a number of youth committees and his associations with Cardiff Standing Conference of Voluntary Youth Organisations and the Cardiff Youth Committee he helped the BB in obtaining grants for events and activities across Wales. Malcolm was appointed Secretary of the Cardiff Battalion in 1949, a post he held until 1960 and was President of the Cardiff Battalion from 1965 to 1985. It was Malcolm’s enthusiasm and expertise which led the Cardiff Battalion in 1971 to set up a Charitable Trust to purchase and run its own headquarters, which served the Battalion and the BB in Wales. He was the Wales District representative on the UK Brigade Executive from 1964 to 1972 and in 1986 in recognition of his service to the BB he was appointed an Honorary Brigade Vice President. Malcolm always had the welfare and interests of the boys at the centre of all his decision making; touched many lives positively, for which many are thankful for his life and celebrate it wholeheartedly.

ROY SOUTER (92) joined the 41st London Life Boy Team when he was eight years old and only left when he retired to Canvey Island when he was 60. He ran both the Life Boy Team and the Company and cared for and supported tirelessly the boys and leaders of the Company. He lived his life well and put more into this world than he ever took out.

SHEILA WHISKER (62) was for some 30 years an Officer in the Anchor section of the 8th Wigan Company (St Peters Church, Hindley), a dedicated worker in the parish and an enthusiastic organiser of events for the Anchor boys at Battalion and District level. She will be sadly missed by many but especially by her husband Jim (Captain of the 8th) and children Ian and Gillian to whom we extend deepest sympathy.

WILLIAM NOEL (BILL) STEvENS MBE (92) was an Officer in the 2nd Andover who offered for Missionary service with CMS in 1949 and was posted to Wusasa Hospital Nigeria as Hospital Manager. This was the focus for the Annual Christmas Day collections of The Boys’ Brigade Auxillary of the Church Missionary Society. During leave he visited Anglican Companies throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland. After 37 years of service to the society he was awarded the MBE.

DAvID JOHN TURNER (62) joined the Life Boy team of the 12th Bromley at 8 years old and served until the age limit when the family moved to Devon. He was appointed as a Lieutenant in the 2nd Exeter Company and seven years later he and his wife returned to the London District and joined the West Kent Battalion (2nd Blackheath). David became involved with the Massed Bugle Bands of the District and took part in many London events, as well as UK and continental tours. He devoted some 44 years as an officer endeavouring to achieve the Object of the Brigade. He will be sadly missed by family, many friends and colleagues.

PHIL SCILLITOE (89) joined the 6th South Essex at Leytonstone High Road Methodist (to become 6th Waltham Forest). Phil went through the ranks and became a young officer after he served in the Army in World War 2. Phil was especially adept with the Junior Section. He will long be remembered for his great work on DofE, First Aid and was a keen pianist in Bible classes. At church he held many roles including treasurer and gardener. Most of all he was a good Christian man, unassuming but highly regarded by all.

MAURICE O HARA joined the 1st Clough County Antrim Company as a young boy. He progressed through each section of the company and eventually served as a Lieutenant. He succeeded Robert Simpson as Captain in 1953 for an agreed period of 1 year. 35 years later Maurice deservedly handed the baton to Stanley Alexander. In 1990 he was made Honorary Vice-President within Ballymena Battalion. A well respected elder and member of the choir in Clough Presbyterian Church; Maurice’s outstanding commitment to the Boys’ Brigade was fondly remembered by officers past and present.

ALEX SEMPLE (88) served as a much respected officer in the 44th Glasgow, giving many years of loyal service before retiring in 1974. He then served as an Honorary Vice-President and later as President to the Company giving sound and valued advice and guidance to the younger officers and boys. Alex leaves many fond memories of dedicated service to both The Boys’ Brigade and Cardonald Parish Church. He is fondly missed by all who knew him.

TESTAMENT TRUMPSWhen introducing children to stories from the bible there are two golden rules:

1. MAKE IT FUN

2. MAKE IT RELEVANT

Testament Trumps do just that! Each pack of cards contains at least 35 Bible characters and every picture tells its own unique bible story. With hidden images on every card (a bit like find Wally), fun scoring categories (great for numeracy) and modern day cartoons, Trumps make learning in small groups both easy and fun.

Played in groups of 2 to 5 children each game takes about 15 minutes. Fun modern day characters make each card relevant to children today, so don’t be surprised if you see John the Baptist as a lifeguard or Delilah as a hair dresser!

“This game is a definite winner, it’s fun, children love a

competitive edge of statistics and they get seeds of truth that are potentially life-changing.” Gay Francia Community and Family Worker,

Trinity Methodist Church

Over 50 Primary and Junior Schools across the UK already use the games. Testament Trumps are

ideal for use with the under 11’s age groups and will provide you with a new fun and exciting

resource for your programme.

A special price of just £3.00 a pack (50% off RRP!) with free P&P is available for a limited time, so don’t delay get your order in today. With Christmas just round the corner, they are a great resource to follow up the nativity

story with ‘what happened before?’ or ‘what happens next?’ – they are great presents too!

For further details, ideas of how you can use the games or to place an order please contact Steven Strongman on 01202 255606 or email [email protected]

Felden Development Scheme

Felden is continuing to improve its facilities and is looking to buy new beds in the main accommodation block. The “New Bed” scheme enables members and friends to make a specific financial contribution to Felden Lodge knowing the use of the funds and offers the opportunity to remember individuals, BB Companies and businesses by way of a framed scroll to be placed on a wall in the accommodation block.

To purchase a bed we are asking that each donor contributes an amount of £100, which would include if required a listing on the scroll to identify the donor. (you could buy part of a bed if you preferred)

Can you help? You can download a form at www.feldenlodge.co.uk or contact Colin Watts on 01442 288 557 for more information.

BAnD InstRuMentsGlobal Fellowship seeks to assist Christian youth groups, including BB companies, to help them become self-sufficient. Sierra Leone is looking to provide a BB marching band, which can be hired for civic parades, weddings and funerals, etc. The income will boost much needed financial resources. Bill Bates, Captain of 1st Newport and of Global Fellowship, Africa, would appreciate hearing from Companies who no longer have use of band instruments or know of other sources. The following is a list of BB Sierra Leone’s requirements and if anyone can help with this request in any way, Bill would be pleased to hear from you. BAND INFORMATION REQUIREDI am doing some research on behalf of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, based in Glasgow, to build an archive collection of BB bands as part of our Historical Research Group into as complete a history of pipe bands as is possible. This information will be a valuable resource to be used by anyone studying for piping and drumming qualifications.

If anyone has any information about BB bands or memories of being in a band, you can contact Doug Allan on [email protected] or telephone 01224 732 566
