Charles Smilinich, principal at Colonial Village Elementary School in the Niagara Wheatfield Central School District, has been selected as the 2015 New York State Elementary Principal of the Year by the School Administra- tors Association of New York State (SAANYS) and the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). This Award is given annually to a member of SAANYS and NAESP who has set the pace, character, and qual- ity of education for the children in his or her school. Nominees are administra- tors who are committed to students, parents, and the community and have shown exceptional contributions to the educational process. A long time educator of a dozen years, Smilinich has served in his cur- rent position at Colonial Village Elementary School since 2011, in which time he has been credited with leading the school out of the significant challenges and troubles that were present upon his arrival at the school, which has a nearly 70 percent family poverty rate. This leader has turned the school around, creating an environment of inclusion, calm, and hope, with the goal that each student will thrive, be successful, and rise to their capabilities. To that end, Smilinich has worked diligently with the staff to implement team- based teaching, and was instrumental in receiving a district-wide counseling grant from the U.S. Department of Education, which enabled the expansion of intervention services for the school. In order to increase morale and pride at Colonial Village, he changed the colors of the school hallways from gray to vibrant colors, encouraged teachers to post student work there, and every morning following his lively daily announcements, the kids chant the school motto “the greatest school in the universe,” which everyone continually strives to live up to. Smilinich received his bach- elor of science degree in sociology, masters in elementary education, and advanced certification in edu- cational leadership from the Uni- versity at Buffalo. Smilinich will be honored for his accomplishments at an awards ceremony on May 8 at the Desmond Hotel and Conference Center in Albany, New York. As New York’s Elementary School Principal of the Year, Smilinich will be cele- brated as a National Distinguished Principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals at a recognition program sponsored by NAESP and VALIC this fall in Wash- ington, DC. Students from West Street’s first grade team reached out to our local Meals On Wheels this past Valentine’s Day. As part of a Commu-nity Service project, first graders made special Valentines for the more than 60 deserving cli-ents here in our community. Students wrote a special “Roses are red . . . poem for each cli-ent, packed a treat bag, and rolled them up in magazines. They were then wrapped in wrap-ping paper that the children had decorated, and tied off to look like a big piece of candy. A big thank you to our generous families for donating magazines, chocolates, and candy to help make

this project possible. Miss Lori from Meals On Wheels was grateful and thrilled to receive these special gifts for her clients. She explained to the children that many of the people they deliver meals to rarely get out anymore and love to hear from children. We were all glad to help make Valentine’s Day a little “sweeter” for everyone!!!!

The transition to college kicked off officially for NW Juniors with our College Planning Night on February 3rd. The NW high school counselors, along with career mentor Lynn Reed, presented information pertaining to the college application process to 200 Juniors and their parents. Admis-sion representatives from Buffalo State, Daemen, NCCC, NU, and UB discussed what they are looking for as they re-view the high school transcripts of their applicants.

The True Meaning of Christmas was a play presented at Colonial Village Elemen-tary School during this past holiday season. This half hour long play had two set-tings: one in a family home and one in the North Pole.

Both settings had an adventure that helped people in need. The Smilinich family helped the Johnson family have a better Christmas through their donations and work. The elves, Frosty, and Rudolph helped Santa make a new sleigh for Christmas. Students had to memorize quite a few lines as well as act. There were also narrators that guided the audience throughout the play. The play was enjoyed by students, faculty and par-ents.

The fifth graders at Niagara Wheatfield's Tuscarora Native American School proudly accepted their D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) diplomas recently from members of the Lewiston Police Depart-ment and Town of Lewiston Supervisor Dennis Brochey. The 20 students went through extensive 18 week training with Officer John Penzotti, Officer Scott Stafford and Chief of Police Christopher Salada where they discussed health and wellness and how to cope with peer pressure. The national program was started in 1999 and is funded by donations. Its focus is on helping children make better decisions about drinking, drugs and smoking. All the students wrote essays about making good choices and Officer Penzotti said he was impressed with what the students had to say. "Sometimes you wonder if you are getting through to the students because we all have our good days and our bad days. When I brought home the essays and read them, I saw that they got it. Fifth graders see so much more than we did at their age and it means a lot to us that they see the dangers and want to avoid them. This is a great school and what I have learned from the students has helped me to be a better D.A.R.E. teacher." Nina Hamby and Andre Clause were selected to represent the class by reading their es-says to the audience to thunderous applause. Principal Elizabeth Corieri says she is very grate-ful to the Lewiston Police Department and to school nurse Marilyn Schlehr for another great year of the pro-gram. "We have a wonderful relationship with the police officers who help our students with strategies to cope with various issues. And we need to thank Ms. Schlehr for her expertise on the health and wellness portion of the program."

The Buffalo Sabre’s very own Sabretooth recently paid a visit to Niagara Wheatfield’s Errick Road El-ementary School. The students have been learning about what traits make up good character and sportsmanship and doing an outstanding job accord-ing to school counselor Liz Antonelli. “The students just love Sabretooth and were so happy to see him at our annual Character Assembly. Those students who really demonstrated out-standing character traits were able to have a personal meeting with him and get their photo taken with him as well.” The students were also gearing up for their Kindness Challenge. Several students, known as the Council Corner Crew, headed up the challenge which involves schoolmates writing down a good deed they observe. “We take those slips of paper and give them to our teachers and then they get added to a chain that goes around the school,” explained Ben. “We call it a Kindness Chain and we hope it wraps around the whole school”.

Retired Army veteran Pete Patterson says he gladly plays messenger for the students at Niagara

Wheatfield's Tuscarora Native American School, especially on Valentine's Day. "The students do such a great job making valentines for our area veterans and I love the reaction I get when I hand one to them. I usu-ally hear from their spouses that it is the best thing I could have gotten for them and how happy they are to receive them. It is great that the students recognize them for everything they have done for this country."

Pete is not the only veteran that gets in on the annual event at the school, his sister Priscilla Williams, who works at the school, is also an Army veteran and Language teacher Tina Pineda, who served in the Marines also lend a hand. Social worker June Van-Every-Huber says the students had a great time showing off their artistic abilities making the cards and banners. "We have about 30 veterans that live on the reservation that Pete personally delivers them to and then the rest go to the VA Hospital. I think it makes the students feel good to brighten someone's day."

Buffalo Bandits Score on Character Education Program at Tuscarora Indian School

The Tuscarora Indian School gymnasium was filled with excitement as Buffalo Bandit players Ryan Ben-esch, Dhane Smith and Mark Stechuis entered the room. Many of the Niagara Wheatfield students are huge la-crosse fans, so having some of their favorite players come to show off their skills was a dream come true. School Counselor Katie Thurman says the school invited the team members to the school for a more important purpose. “This is a new program the Bandits have started where they come to schools to talk about important educational

topics. Last year it was reading and this year it is character development and perseverance.” Teacher Joanne Weinholtz introduced the players by saying this, “This game means a lot to our community. It is part of our history and we have a lot of respect for these players because they have taken a game we love and mastered it.” Mark Stechuis acted as master of ceremonies and talked to the students about his own experience of playing lacrosse in high school and how, despite start-ing at an older age than most, he persevered to become a

professional. “You have to put the effort in to be suc-cessful and be rewarded,” he told the students. “Nev-er quit, no matter how hard it is.” He then invited several students up to par-

ticipate in some friendly competitions. The school’s very own Paul Be-atty, a teacher, showed off his goalie skills against the players as well. “This is a great program that fits in nicely with the Bandits’ mission to give back to the community with a positive message for today’s youth,” says Mrs. Thurman. “We are very grateful to the Bandits for coming and spending some time with our students. It meant a lot to us.”

The warmhearted students at Errick Road Elementary turned out in their finest to help raise money for a resident of Pets Alive (formerly Buffalo Humane). Quincy is a senior Chihuahua that has a host of medical problems due to a lifetime of neglect and needed surgery to help her recuperate. She had a cherry eye, is deaf from an untreated ear infection, is mostly blind, has skin issues, a hernia, bladder stones and needs dental work. Knowing how caring the school is, school counselor Jen Henry asked the K-Kids students if they would be willing to hold a fundraiser for the dog. The students brainstormed and came up with an event called Fancy Friday. Everyone was asked to dress up and donate any amount of money they wanted to help with Quincy’s medical costs. Students dubbed the fundraiser as “Fancy for Quincy” once they saw photos of her and learned about her hardship. The sharp dressed students raised almost $400 for the pooch. Quincy and her foster mom came in to personally thank the students for their generosity. The students gifted her with bones, toys and a dog bed. “The kids loved seeing Quincy and had the chance to pet her, hear her story and take pictures with her,” says school counselor Liz Antonelli. “Thanks in part to their efforts, Quincy

is recuperating nicely from her surgery.”

Students in Amy Myers’ Fam-ily and Consumer Science (FACS) class at Edward Town Middle School are having a great time with the cooking unit. Not only do the students explore food safety, they are learning how to make a variety of foods they can make at home. Mrs. Myers says she hears all the time from her 6th grade stu-dents that this is their favorite class. “Students make a variety of foods from brownies, cakes and cookies all from scratch to French Toast, omelets, tacos, parfaits and other items. We focus on how to make healthier versions of some of the recipes such as substituting chick-en for beef in the tacos or using

whole wheat as opposed to white flour for baking. On the days we cook, the students get to eat the finished product and we talk about if it is a success or failure and investigate what went wrong with the preparation if it is not very tasty. “ The class focuses heavily on how to safely prepare the food to minimize food poisoning and kitchen safety. “We talk about how to prevent cross contamination between foods and being aware of food allergens, also how to clean and sanitize the workspace.” Students have had a safety unit on how to prevent fires in the kitchen and how to use a fire extinguisher. “We also go over the proper way to use and carry a knife to avoid injury,” says Mrs. Myers. While the students are enjoying cooking and their finished product, Mrs. Myers is incorporating 21st century college and career readiness skills. “We are working in groups, so they learn teamwork, they read the recipes out loud to improve those skills, they use math for measuring ingredients and adjusting the recipes, also problem solving and time management.” Mrs. Myers encourages her students’ families to allow them to help out in the kitchen. “They are doing fantastic with their cooking skills, so I think if the family chef wants a little break from preparing the meal to give them a chance to show off what they have learned here in FACS class. Also, they have learned how to properly set the table and wash dish-es, so let them help out with that as well.”

Common Core for Math Parent Night Held at Colonial Village Elementary School

Errick Road Students Jump for the American Heart Association During the month of February, Errick Road Elemen-tary School in Niagara Wheatfield hosts its annual Jump Rope for Heart Event to raise money for the American Heart Association. In the past two years over $7,000 has been raised by the school.

This event is coordinated by physical education teachers Mrs. Marianna Hayes and Mr. Anthony Vekich who for one week ask all students in grades kindergar-ten to 5th to participate in raising money for the cause. Students meet in the gym where they go through differ-ent fitness and jumping stations and learn the impor-tance of proper nutrition.

Mr. Vekich says, “The American Heart Association provides funding for lifesaving heart and stroke research and community and educational programs for our youth. The Jump Rope for Heart Program also teaches stu-dents how physical fitness benefits the heart and shows students that volunteering can be a fun and positive ex-perience for the whole community.”

On January 14th, Niagara Wheatfield Central School District held a Common Core Math Parent Night at Colonial Village Elementary School for parents of kindergarten to 5th grade. The session was runned by math teacher Jennifer Golias and contained a panel of staff, administrators and Orleans/Niagara BOCES Race to the Top math specialist Jessi Toep-fer. Jessi is certified in 7-12 Secondary Mathematics and Elementary grades 1-6 (mathematics focused) with a Masters Degree in Educational Computing. Her areas of focus for the past 8 years have been in AIS, Technology Integration, and Secondary Mathematics Instruction. She has been working with our teachers to develop the skills and understandings needed to enrich mathematics instruction while incorporating the Common Core State Standards and new Math Modules.

Over 50 parents attended the informational meeting which also consisted of breakout sessions on various topics to help their children succeed with the new requirements. Also on hand were Superintendent Dr. Lynn Fusco, Principals Elizabeth Corieri, Theron Mong, Nora O’Bryan, Charles Smilinich, and Assistant Principal Maria Zawistowski who made themselves available to provide additional information to the parents.

For parents who missed the session, more information can be found at:http://www.nwcsd.k12.ny.us/Page/5382.

Students in Miss Culligan’s 6th grade art class learned about perspective. They had to show ob-jects the correct size in space and choose what images they would alter to create the illusion.

Miss Culligan asked the students to write what they liked best about the project. Here are their responses.

Abigail- The part I most liked about my project was being able to choose what I wanted the perspective to be. I chose France because I want to go there when I’m older.Erin-The best thing I liked was the perspective point of view. You envisioned how

close it was and the farther you went back is where the small buildings were. I love how you could make it however you wanted. Mine was the dark night sky theme.

Maya- The best thing I liked about the project was that I learned how to make a piece of artwork that looks like how it would look if I was in Hollywood on the road with all the palm trees.Lisa- I liked this project because you had to try to make everything look like it was really going on and on forever.Torrie- I liked how realistic my project looked and the perspective. It looks like I am actually driving there in the picture.Anthony- I liked how the river and trees were going back in the distance and you could see how the river flows way out and looks like it keeps going.Gabriella- The best thing I liked about this project was the background. You could draw whatever you wanted and make it look realistic along with the sky. For example, in my background I had palm trees and a sun rising.Olivia-The best part of the project was drawing the background and that we were able to draw whatever scene we wanted.

English Class Inspires Gratitude to Teachers Who Changed Lives Students in Angela Porter's and Christa Zwelling's English class entitled "The Writing in Your World" has allowed students to express themselves and gain confidence in their writing skills that they didn't think they would ever have. Steve Meyers, a student, says he always considered writing as one of his weaknesses until he took the class. "Even though I felt each year my writing was improving, I wasn't sure what to expect in this class. We started writing a whole bunch of different pieces using different genres and started our own blogs. It was a great way to speak your mind and express your opinion on an issue or matter. It was a tremendous tool to help improve my writing." He then went on to thank Mrs. Porter and Mrs. Zwelling. "Without their help I would have never been the writer that I am today. I am going to take all the strategies and techniques I learned here and use them to help me in my life." The gratitude was an inspiration for a special breakfast for the students where they were asked to invite a teacher who had an impact on them. Steve and his class-mate John Human invited their kindergarten teachers Shaun Gallagher and Nicole Rizzo. Both students showed their for-mer teachers their digital portfolios and writing samples they created in class. Both students thanked the Colonial Village Elementary School teachers for giving them the foundation to be successful. John says Mrs. Rizzo was surprised how big he has gotten. "It was nice. We talked about how high school was going and how much I overcame to be where I am today." John admits that he was not the best student and wanted to drop out of school in 10th grade. "Someone sug-gested I go to BOCES and take a class and I ended up in Mr. Brett's Auto Mechanic program. I loved it and knew if I want-ed to keep going to BOCES, I had to stay in high school. Since I had to stay in high school I decided to make it better. I was very lucky that a lot of the teachers here were willing to work with me and help me be the student I should be. Now after graduation I will be attending Universal Technical Institute in Pennsylvania to continue studying auto mechanics. My teachers are all very proud of me."

Colonial Village Elementary School held its INVENTION CONVENTION on February 11th. The Invention Convention is designed to promote student’s problem-solving and creative-thinking skills. Children followed a step-by-step process to invent a new product or develop a new twist on an existing invention. This year’s Inven-tion Convention was a a huge success, we had over 40 inventors! Our school is so proud of the students who took the challenge and tried their hardest. The inventions were very creative. Congratulations to all who partici-pated, we hope to have even more inventors next year. Eleven of our students have been invited to participate in the WNY Regional Competition.

Four students, who attend the Orleans/Niagara BOCES' Career and Technical Education Center, suc-cessfully placed at the SkillsUSA Region 1 Leadership Conference and Skills Olympics held at SUNY Alfred recently. High School and college students competed against each other in their areas of study from Alleghany, Steuben, Monroe, Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Cattaraugus and Ontario Counties for the three top spots. The stu-dents will move on to the New York State Championship that will be held at the end of April in Syracuse.SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry work-ing together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps each student excel. SkillsUSA's mission is to empower its members to become world-class workers, leaders and respon-sible American citizens.

Congratulations to Ryan Chrysler in the Security and Law Enforcement Program who took first in the Crime Scene Inves-tigation Team competition, Ashley Groll in the Early Childhood Education Program took first in Job Demo Open competition, Na-than Cornett in the Culinary Arts Program who took first place in Restaurant Services and Jacob Kujawa in the Digital Media Program who took second place in the TV/Video Production Team competition. We wish them the best of luck at the New York State competition!

The Orleans/Niagara BOCES' ProStart Culinary team of Ray Delucci, Kashiya Hogue, Tyler Mule and Wyatt Roberts cooked their way into first place at the 2015 Taste of Education at Salvatore's Italian Restaurant. The event, hosted by the New York State Res-taurant Association's Western New York chapter, raises money for scholarships to support local culinary students in the National ProStart Culinary Competition. The theme of the evening was Global Cuisine and the stu-dents, who are taught by Bob Ihle at the Niagara Career and Tech-nical Education Center, dazzled the crowd and judges with their chicken cordon bleu, paella, chicken paprikash, potato pierogi, Pol-ish sausage, Shrimp Fra Diablo, chocolate mousse, tiramisu and nut strudel. They competed against high school teams from the Orleans Career and Technical Education Center, Carrier Educational Center and Hewes Educational Center of Chautauqua. Ray Delucci was also tapped to play sous chef to Iron Chef Competitor Cody Casiglia of Empire Suites in a 60 minute competi-tion at the fundraiser that was waged against Bryan Mecozzi of Black Iron Bystro and Jon Wilson of Ralph Wilson Stadium and their stu-dent sous chefs. Cody and Ray walked away victorious with first place. "The Iron Chef win was great," says Ray. "It showed me that I can be great if I work hard. You have to be dedicated to what you love and it feels great that it is starting to pay off."

The ProStart team will be competing at the New York State Invitational at the Culinary Institute of America at Hyde Park, NY March 13th and 14th for a chance to win scholarships and move on to the Nationals.
