at the time of writing, June has been an up and down month. Once again it’s been a nice journey around Brislington with my battered suitcase delivering the mag. I’ve had the luck to talk to some great people, be they local residents or business owners. I am in debt to great residents such as Susan Jones, Mary Churchill, Perry Hicks, Rhian Greaves, Chris Sampson, Terry Hicks, Jenny Bourne (who will now be my Assistant Editor), Andrew Matthews, Kellie Evans, Kerri Hall, Gemma Hodder, Emma Daintree and Sallie Eyre for helping me to deliver the magazine.

This issue has come out too early for the results of the Brislington Community Partnership AGM or on ideas to modernise the Brislington website. However, we have had the neighbourhood arts Programme result. My Whispers in the Woods project was one of 12 in contention, but lost out to the well-established Bristol group, APE Project. I’ll try to get beyond the official waffle to find out exactly what they’re doing, whether it’ll go beyond St. Anne’s Woods and what its legacy will be, then will report back in our August issue.

Running this magazine is a full-time endeavor – as many have said, delivering alone is borderline insane, but it is an enjoyable one. We have only just been able to make a third edition and I do need your help. We’re trying to get more advertisers while carrying as much content as possible. We do need your support, if you can spare it. Patreon allows you to not only help The Nightingale, but receive any other stories and books I create as well.

http://bit.do/nightingale even $1(67p) a month will help.

Becoming jobless has not been easy, but as a freelancer, it happens. I have also written a book based in Brislington (the Girl Who Made it snow) and have plans for a sequel. I’ve started a Kickstarter campaign (see the back cover) to help raise money to make the books better, get a proper release and donate copies to local libraries.

Back in January, the pub closed its doors for a five month renovation, which not only brought

the village pub back to its old glory, but modernised it too. Now, Wozz and Tina are welcoming both regular and new patrons to a thoroughly different, yet reassuringly familiar Brislington institution.

The King’s Arms was opened in the 18th century, having been created out of a trio old mining cottages. Since taking over, Wozz and Tina, and the building’s owners, have taken updating the interior and putting on a new lime render. The biggest change were the inclusion of new windows facing Bath Road, which let in more light and give a great, relaxed feel.

Offering cask ales, local ciders and soon, Bristol ales, the pub is set to get its kitchen up and running soon, so it can offer four types of burgers, seasonal food, sharing platters and bar snacks - all of them homemade and fresh.

There will be new events such as monthly karaoke contests, weekly open mic nights and a pub quiz every Tuesday. The quiz costs £1 to enter and the winner gets a £30 bar tab. There are plans for a summer cider festival with a hog roast in the garden and screenings of all the rugby world cup games (September 18th to October 31st).

July 2015

Dear Mr Mayor,

We are writing to express our very grave concern that

the route from Wick Road Library to Knowle Library

presents a very real and present risk of probable to

certain risk of serious injury and/or death. Pedestrians

have to cross the bottom of the road down Talbot Hill

in order to reach the only pavement over the humpback

bridge. We have not received any notification that a full

health & Safety Risk assessment has been undertaken

or completed.

We have not received any information on similar risk

assessments for the suggested alternatives routes to

Stockwood or St George’s. Given the very serious/fatal

road traffic accident that took place on the A4 near to

the end of Wick Road, yesterday 08-06-2015 we request

that risk assessments be conducted and used to inform

the suggestion that alternatives are reasonable for the

24000 citizens of Greater Brislington to use.

Wick Road Library is served safely by the bus routes 1 &

36. We have a safe travel across the busy Wick Road via

a Pelican Crossing. Given the large numbers of children

and babies in prams using the present route to the library

we would suggest this library be allowed to continue

and develop its already large user base without incurring

the hazards that would inevitably occur from its closure.

Yours sincerely,

sAVe WiCK roAD liBrAry CAmPAign

not long after the Battle of Bosworth, where Henry tudor defeated King Richard iii, to become

Henry vii, the new king sought divine help. He could have picked any one of dozens of holy sites across England, but he chose a small chapel in the parish of Brislington. It was then part of Somerset and just south of the city of Bristol, then a growing port. By then, the shrine, deep in the largely uninhabited woods where the brook met the Avon, had already become an important place for pilgrims.

Since Henry made his pilgrimage here with his wife, Elizabeth of York, the area known as St. Anne’s Woods in Brislington has captured the minds of residents. Not long after, John Cabot came to the shrine, as St. Anne is a patron saint of sailors, to bless his voyage to discover America. The shrine continued to be one of the most important pilgrimage destinations until Henry’s son, Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries.

A lot has happened since, with the lands being turned into pleasure gardens by local landowners, the valley being cut in two by Brunel’s Bristol to Bath railway line and a pottery kiln being built over the old shrine itself. We no longer know exactly where that shrine was or where the original holy well was placed. All we know, as demonstrated by a recent book by Ken Taylor, is that the current one is probably a 19th century folly. Yet, over the last hundred years or more, people from Brislington and beyond have returned each year to process to the well and hold a celebration.

On 25th July, the St.Anne’s Pageant will return. Over the last few years it was run by the Discover Brislington Brook project, an offshoot of the Brislington Community Partnership, but will now be run by Friends of Brislington Brook and anyone who would like to volunteer.

The Pageant will begin at 12pm at the Pilgrim pub. It will then process along the Brislington Brook, as far as possible, down Sherwell Road to the Nightingale Valley and then on to St. Anne’s Woods.

We will be stopping from time to time to listen to stories from Kevan Manwaring and acoustic music from Inside Kites.

After the pilgrimage at the Litchfield Open Space there will be food and entertainment, including Two Bist We, starting from around 1pm. The Nightingale has been unable to find out further details about this separate event.

The pilgrimage is going to be a fun jaunt through Brislington, so please dress up, make your own homemade medieval costumes, make your own instruments and enjoy the fun!
