Shaun’s Corner We’ve had some really positive feedback about the new look and feel of your monthly newsletter. Thanks to those who have taken the time to let us know your thoughts. We are regularly told thatwe need to communicate more. A lot of the questions we get asked are things that have beenhighlighted in this very newsletter. Can I ask you all to encourage your members to read it fromfront to back each month. I’ve even heard of some divisions emailing it out to their youth membersand parents. There’s no reason why you can’t do this, in fact we’ d encourage it. The more we get

the info out there, the more informed people will be.This month our focus is on putting the final preparations in place for the National Youth Festival. We have over 100 participants registered from Northern Region alone, including greatrepresentation from our two rural districts. I’m so proud of how districts and divisions have gotten inbehind the event. I’ve heard of some fantastic fundraising activities taking place in local areas , well

done to those putting this effort in. Remember this is OURevent – you’re all part of Northern Region and I encourageyou to get down to the two key competition events, particularly the competitions at Eden Park. They are a greatoccasion and enjoyable for cadets and youth leaders alike.I hope to see you there. In finishing, a big thank you to our talented committee of volunteers who have come together as a dedicated team committed to delivering an amazingfestival.

WelfareOur thoughts and prayers are with Ollie MacLaurin (Onewhero Youth) and his family on the recentpassing of their mother.

Our best wishes for a speedy and full recovery to Lesley Guptill, Regional Resource TeamManager, who has been in hospital recently.

Secondment to UN

Thuy Nguyen, Divisional Youth Manager of Auckland Youth Division, is taking a 12 month leave of absence after being seconded by Unilever to work with the United Nations on the Scaling UpNutrition movement. Scaling Up Nutrition was founded on the principle that everyone has the rightto food and good nutrition. We wish Thuy the very best on her endeavours!

Bits and pieces

First Aid kits in divisionsPlease remember that every division must have a complete firstaid kit with up-to-date contents at every division night.

If you do not have one, please sort this out as a matter of priority - you never know what might happen! If you’re unsurehow to do this, have a chat with your Area Youth Manager or area committee and they will point you in the right direction.

District Cadet of the Year - Applications Now Open

A reminder to pass onto your gold cadets…

District Cadets of the Year are appointed in each of the six districts and represent their fellowcadets. They are good role models, attend events throughout the district and assist us to runvarious activities. District Cadets of the Year go forward for selection as Regional Cadet of the Year

and anyone wishing to be considered for that role must put in an application for District Cadet of theYear selections.

DCOTYs are well-rounded cadets, involved in all aspects of the Youth Programme and can ablyrepresent the views of Youth members.

Attributes include:

maintaining high standards and being efficient as per the policyinvolvement in a variety of divisional work, eg competitions, training, social activitiesgiving time in either community events or community service

wearing uniform correctly as per the policy and encouraging others to do the sameshowing a caring attitude, helping others at division to settle inconfident, competent and polite, giving others the appropriate courtesy.

Applicants should ideally be 16 years of age and over, must be under 18 years of age as at 1September 2013, and should be available to attend the Regional Cadet of the Year Selections on25-26 May. An application form has been sent to Divisional Managers which needs to be filled outby anyone interested in applying for this exciting role. Applications need to go direct to the relevantDistrict Youth Manager. Applications close 30 April.

St John 2013 Influenza Vaccination ProgrammeSt John is pleased to offer influenza vaccines free of charge to our volunteers. Please note this isavailable to Youth Leaders aged over 18. Attached to this News In Youth is a copy of the scheduleof upcoming vaccination dates. Although the March dates have passed, there are still manyopportunties in April and May. Further details are included on the last page of the attachment.

Resource Members – what do they do?

This is a valuable role within divisions. A resource member is usually someone who doesn’t wear uniform, but helps within a division to ensure it runs smoothly. Some of the tasks they could lookafter may include paperwork, administration, uniform issuing and monitoring, collecting termdonations, uniform bonds etc. The possibilities are endless. This is a good way to involve parentswho want to help, but can’t commit to a full Youth Leader role (it may lead to a Youth Leader roleultimately). They still need to go through the normal leader recruitment process to ensure our divisions are always safe. If you know of anyone who could be interested in a resource role, feelfree to chat with your Area Youth Manager for information on how it could work for you.

We have a Regional Resource team which assists us to run regional activities and projects. In thepast, people ha ve transferred into this group when they haven’t been able to make a weeklydivisional commitment. This is no longer the case. To be part of the Regional Resource team, people need to apply for a position by contacting Lesley Guptill, the team manager. If a member wants to stay involved in a resource capacity, they should become a resource member based at adivision. If you’re unsure about what this all means, feel free to check in with your Area Youth

Manager.

St John MAD Hui: Make a DifferenceThe first ever St John MAD Hui: Make a Difference took place last month at Piha Mill Camp. It wasa great success with over 60 people attending. The focus of this hui was on bullying and how wecan curb the problem both in our communities and in St John. We are developing a report of theoutcomes which will be sent out widely in the coming months. Thanks to all those who took part!

National Headquarters’ new namePlease note that with immediate effect, National Office has been renamed to National Headquartersto refer to the national function of the Mt Wellington offices. This brings the term “NationalHeadquarters ” in line with the already existing “Regional Headquarters ”.

Advanced First Aid Update

The first couple of Youth Advanced First Aid courses are behind us, and feedback so far has beenvery positive. Our thanks to Andrew Graham and our fantastic team of tutors for running two

successful courses, and for putting together a demanding schedule of courses for 2013. We ask for your patience over the next 18 months as we already know demand will exceed what we canprovide. The team are planning a course a month across the region, sometimes two a month, andwe are most grateful to them for this.

Because of the predicted popularity of the course in the next 18 months, we have set up a processfor prioritising applications to attend a course (applies to AFA only). The system will work asfollows:

Page 6: NIY April 2013

7/28/2019 NIY April 2013

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/niy-april-2013 6/13

1) Those closest to their Grand Prior’s Award followed by

2) Order of age.

It’s very unusual for us to prioritise things by age but the nature of the course curriculum is such thata certain level of maturity is required. If a 13 or 14 year old is accepted on the course, it will be onlyon the Divisional Manager’s recommendation that they have the maturity to cope.

Thank you for your support of this change. If you have any questions about it, please let us knowthrough your Area or District Youth Manager. I truly believe this course will make a difference inadvancing the skills of our youth members and leaders.

Round the Bays: Caitlin Meister, East Coast Bays Youth Division

Recently while working at Round the Bays I was particularly impressed with one of your cadetsCaitlin Meister. I was impressed with several things, firstly she kept a cool head and also waswilling to do the "boring tasks" while we were dealing with the cardiac arrest (she was busy treating

Page 7: NIY April 2013

patients with minor afflictions). This is a very distracting environment to work under but she didreally well, she found her niche where she could work and make a difference and that was a hugehelp to the limited staff who were free due to other work load at the time. Also her skills were spoton. She is a very capable first aider and everything she did was exactly right and what we wouldhave wanted. She also asked lots of questions of the other staff if she was unsure which is veryimportant as well, especially to the staff supervising her. She was willing to learn and have things

explained but was also able to get on with tasks that she could do independently.Ben Conder – Operational Volunteer and Youth Resource

Grand Prior’s Award Presentations: 12 May

The Governor General has invited eligible cadets to have Grand Prior’s Awards presented at Government House on Sunday 12 May at 5pm. Eachrecipient is allowed to invite two guests to attend with them. This maximumnumber is a requirement of Government House to ensure everyone fits in the

presentations pavilion. This is the reason we generally present a GrandPrior’s Award twice; the first time usually being at a St John ceremony wherethere are fewer limitations on numbers. Those who are to have a GPpresented at Government House will receive an invitation in the next fewdays.

Advanced First Aid Course: 18/19/26 May

18, 19, 26 May: This course will be held at Pukekohe St John hall. Anyone in the region is able toregister to attend this course. The course times are 8:30am - 4pm each day. All three days mustbe attended to earn the gold badge. Operational uniform is to be worn (no jackets or ties). The costof the course is $50 per person (same price for cadets and leaders). Please register by sending aYouth course application form by Friday 26 April.

Please note the course advertised for 3-5 May for Hauraki/Coromandel members has beenpostponed due to the workload of Clinical Development that weekend. It takes a lot of juggling toorganise a course; Andrew needs to work with two departments to ensure sufficient gear, anappropriate venue and enough tutors. The good news is that we have now confirmed a new date of 28-30 September and this course will take place in Thames.

Gold Drill Course / Leaders Drill Course: 18-19 May

Successful completion of this course will qualify members for their Gold Drill badge. Camp runsfrom the Saturday morning till Sunday afternoon in a ‘boot camp’ style . Gold level attendees mustknow green and blue drill and want to further extend their skills to gold level.

Venue: ATC training rooms at Ardmore Aerodrome

Course cost: $60pp.

We will also be taking the chance to run a Leaders Drill Course on the Saturday at the same venue. There is no cost for leaders to attend and this course which will help you familiarise yourself with thedrill required at a divisional level.

To register for either course: send a youth course application form by Friday 26 April.

Enjoy your April and the last of the warm summer days!
