Leadership Development Training Launched!
June marks the beginning of winter also this month brings the shortest day of the year.
Wherever you are, we hope you are keeping warm and dry!
This month also marked the launch of Northern Regions first Leadership Development Training
Course, which replaces the NCO Training Course. The material has all been revamped to
recognise the issues facing our people today.
The course curriculum is of an incredibly high standard, says Shaun Greaves, Regio nal Youth
Manager. The course has been developed over a two year period with input from St John
leaders all over the country!
The first course hosted in Northern ran last weekend at Camp Morley, Clarks Beach. For the
first time it was fronted by proven cadet role models as Section Leaders, with 18+ leaders
providing support and mentoring. Subject matter experts (or SMEs) deliver much of the
curriculum to ensure the best quality training possible for our cadets.
I am very proud of the skill, talent and can-do attitude of this team, and my thanks for them for
volunteering to be part of it, Shaun says.
The second course of the year will be held over the weekend of 30 August 1 September
2013 at Waihi Beach Christian Camp (applications for this course will close on 9 August 2013).
Applications should be in as early as possible to ensure cadets have sufficient time to complete
the pre-course work before the camp.

Shauns Corner
Firstly, our apologies for a late News In Youth this
month. These take a lot of time and effort from a
number of people to put together, and on this
occasion I was on holiday in Brisbane so wasnt
around to do my bit till now.
Speaking of my holiday, I had a couple of small
reflections while I was away that I thought I would
share. My family moved to Brisbane over four years
ago now and I try to get over to see them when I can. One of the best things about this most recent
holiday is that I got to see my nephew Jayden (10) and Ethan (7) play league for the first time.
They are both pretty good (in my humble opinion) and seeing them make those tackles was pretty
exciting Ethan, though small compared to some of his team mates, is a formidable force on the
field. As I watched the boys play I made note of the number of people involved in making these
games happen. Coaches, managers, water boys, club members, referees, parents, supporters
all freely giving up their time to support young people keeping healthy, fit, and learning life andsocial skills. Sounds familiar
The other thing that struck me was the referee at Ethans game was quite a young chap; at a guess
he would have been around 14. I thought this was just fantastic! A great way to use young leaders
who have a passion for the sport. Much the same as our youth members, many of whom can be
good leaders if we give them the opportunity and training. Many divisions do this really well, which
helps their division to run that little bit smoother. My question to you this month is what
opportunities are there for young leaders at your division? Have you got NCOs not really doing
much? Have you got members with potential that could be put forward for an LDT course? Have
you got blue or green members who could be leading parades? The opportunities are endless andI encourage you to think outside the box with how you develop our young leaders! Good luck!

Bits and pieces
NZQA credits and the Advanced First Aid course
This is just a reminder that NZQA credits are not awarded for completing the new Advanced First
Aid course. Rest assured the training cadets and leaders receive is to a very high standard,
delivered by active ambulance officers trained to teach the course.
There is a wider national project looking at career and training pathways within St John Youth and
NZQA standards is on the list of things to look at long term.
St John Youth on Sticky TV
Tune into Sticky TV on Channel 4 on Tuesday 25 June between 4pm-4:30pm to see members from
St John Youth Northern Region featured. Isaac McFarlane (Birkenhead), India Hyams (Pt
Chevalier) and Jeevesh Concisom (Penguin from Takapuna) will do some first aid demonstrations
and show off our Youth Programme. Thanks to these three for being brave enough to appear onnational TV!
Warm fuzzies
Lynn Mosley representing St John
Big congratulations to Lynn Mosley for being nominated to represent St John at the Governor-
Generals Patronage Reception celebrating Volunteer Awareness Week!
The reception presents an opportunity for Their Excellencies to recognise some of the volunteers
who contribute an exceptional amount of their own time to St John and their community.
Lynn is the Northern Regional Youth Portfolios Manager and was the National Youth Festival
Coordinator this year. Well done Lynn!
Leadership Development Training
I just want to say that I can't help but feel really excited about this course and I will be promoting
it!!!!! Thank you to all those who spent many many hours developing this. I am also very pleasedto see that Shaun will be heading up the course for the next year - thank you Shaun.

Seems like it was a moving, hugely successful day with rich content and fantastic teaching. The

Enrolment Ceremonies
These special ceremonies give cadets the opportunity to formally be welcomed into St John. Youth
members to be enrolled must have full uniform, practice the four arms and eight points of the St
John cross, and the Youth Promise. This should be done in both divisional and own time.
Please email names of cadets to be enrolled (spelled correctly as we print certificates off these
emails) [email protected] the Friday three weeks prior to your districts ceremony. We have four ceremonies coming up in the districts; cadets would attend the ceremony within their
own district. Basic information can be found below, with additional detail being available within
districts:
North/West Auckland: 29 June
North/West Aucklands ceremony will take place at Kelston Girls College. A compulsory practice
will take place prior to the ceremony on the day.
Central Auckland: 12 July
Central Aucklands ceremony will take place at the Auditorium at HQ in Mt Wellington. Acompulsory practice will take place at the same venue on Friday 5 July.
Please note that the Northland Enrolment Ceremony has been rescheduled to Sunday 6 October.
Further details soon.
Hutchinson Cup Quiz: 29 & 30 June
This quiz is a great way to sharpen your knowledge on first aid, caregivers, our badge programme
and St John in general in a different way - and its lots of fun! The top five teams in this quiz
competition are the ones selected to go to Interprovincials which take place each year in Augustbetween Central and Northern Regions. This year Interprovincials will be hosted by Central Region
in Matamata.
There are three venue options for Auckland this year:
Pukekohe Ambulance Station Saturday from 9am
Epsom St John Hall Saturday from 12:30pm
New Lynn Ambulance Station Sunday from 9am.
Please note that the top team from each district will be the ones to go to Interprovincials this year.Central and Easts results will be combined for this year only to choose the fifth team. This is an
interim measure to deal with the fact that we now have six districts; later in the year we will
announce our new policy on selecting the five teams ready for next year.
Please send your entries to Enid Gini with the names of the four members in your team, along with
the venue and time you wish to go to. Enids email address [email protected]
