Welcome to March
This month we welcome Hamish Bell to our team as the editor of your monthly News In Youth.
Hamish started with St John in Central Region and has recently moved to Auckland. He has a
degree in communications, and has an eye for detail, so is perfectly placed to make sure our
monthly newsletter is interesting and topical. We hope you like the new look News In Youth.
I returned today from a holiday in Melbourne where I spent time with family and friends, along
with celebrating a special birthday. It was a great week away and definitely helped to recharge
the batteries.
On the flight home I watched a movie which really made me think about the impact we can have
on young people. It was a movie about a 15 year old young man who was dealing with some
serious issues around depression, and whose suffering was made worse by the fact that he was
so shy and didnt have any friends. Youll be pleased to hear he learned to deal with his issues
and there was a happy ending! The point of telling you this is that we cannot underestimate
what our programme does for young people. It can provide an outlet for people to bethemselves, to have fun, to have adults and peers who listen and care, and to make life-long
friends. As someone who was a shy kid myself, in my early teens I experienced a huge
confidence boost because of the great division I went to, a particularly good leadership course I
attended, and I had some great leaders who saw some potential in me and allowed me to be
myself.
Every single youth leader can make a positive impact on the life of a young person. You are
doing something very special out there in
your community and never forget that.
Just being a listening ear can make the
world of difference to anyone, especially
a young person. I want to thank you for
the role you play in developing young
people, and giving them something
exciting, fun and safe to be part of.

Competitions update
This year we are introducing the official ProQA ambulance emergency call system to ourcompetitions. We want competition scenarios to be as real as possible and ProQA is the question
system that is used by our Emergency Communications Centre when you call 111. Cadets will be
tested on the quality and manner in which the answers are given and this will better prepare them
for a real life situation. If you have any questions on how this will work, feel free to contact your
District Competitions Officer, or our Regional Competitions Officer, Elinor Swery. Her email

Youth membership ages
This is a quick reminder regarding our Youth policy on the age of youth members. You are
probably aware of young people younger than six, or nearing their sixth birthday, who want to join
St John.
Please remember that our programme policies do not cover us for under six year olds. To ensure
we are providing a safe, secure and supportive environment for all of our young people, we shouldensure that a parent or caregiver attends division with anyone under six every week until they are
six years old. Once they are six, we can process them as an official member of the programme.
The St John Youth policy is available to download from the Hub on the Youth Leaders E-Office.
Our new leader recruitment process
Just a quick reminder that all our
youth leader recruitment now
takes place online via the St JohnRecruitment Centre. Its easy to
access: just go to
join.stjohn.org.nz and search for
10159 for the generic Youth
Leaders Northern Region
advert.
If you get any prospective leaders wanting to join your division, please get them to register here
the new recruitment business cards explain the processif you dont have them, contact your Area
Youth Manager who has a supply, or the Community Programmes office. After a person hasregistered online, your AYM will initiate the process at the organisations end arranging an
interview, conducting reference checks and recommending or declining the applicant.
You may also find the Join St John website useful for searching for other opportunities within the
organisation (paid and volunteer) that you may be interested in taking up!!
Member Assistance Programme
Sometimes we all need someone to talk to sometimes things can be stressful at work, home or
even at St John. Thats why St John has a free Member Assistance Programme, available to allmembers of St John. It is just one thing St John offers to look after its members. Rest assured that
all calls are completely confidential details of your call will not be revealed to anyone.
The Member Assistance Programme can be reached 24/7 by calling 0800 284 678. More

District Cadet of the Year Selections
District Cadets of the Year are appointed in each of the six districts and represent their fellow
cadets. They are good role models, attend events throughout the district and assist us to run
various activities. District Cadets of the Year go forward for selection as Regional Cadet of the Year
and anyone wishing to be considered for that role must put in an application for District Cadet of the
Year selections.
DCOTYs are well-rounded cadets, involved in all aspects of the Youth Programme and can ably
represent the views of Youth members.
Attributes include:
maintaining high standards and being efficient as per the policy
involvement in a variety of divisional work, eg competitions, training, social activities
giving time in either community events or community service
wearing uniform correctly as per the policy and encouraging others to do the same
showing a caring attitude, helping others at division to settle inconfident, competent and polite, giving others the appropriate courtesy.
Applicants should ideally be 16 years of age and over, must be under 18 years of age as at 1
September 2013, and should be available to attend the Regional Cadet of the Year Selections on
25-26 May. An application form will be sent to Divisional Managers which needs to be filled out by
anyone interested in applying for this exciting role. Applications need to go direct to the relevant
District Youth Manager.
Bits and pieces
Email addresses
If you received this months News in Youth in the post, that probably means we do not have your
email address on our member database. Communicating via email is a real cost saver and
increases the speed of our communication about the Youth programme and St John in general.
If you have an email address, please send it to us:[email protected].

Course application form
Please remember to use the brand new course application form it is
really easy to use, and makes it easier for our admin team to process.
Everyone should be using this form for registering onto courses (such
as Advanced First Aid, Caregivers, Childcare, Leadership
Development) and is completed by cadets/parents. The Regional
Office will then contact the cadet directly to confirm them onto the
course or let them know it is full. Its really easy to fill out get in touch
with your Divisional Manager or Area Youth Manager if you have any
issues. Once its completed, send the form to Chrissy Crosswell for
processing or [email protected]
Leadership Development Training
You may be aware that the old NCO Course has been under review over the past year and a brand
new course has been produced, which will be trialled in Northern Region in June. Were taking theopportunity at this point to nationally retitle the course as Leadership Development Training.
This means you will no longer see it called the NCO Course and this is reflective of the focus of
the new course.
Pips and epaulettes
A quick reminder also that if you have any spare pips, gorget patches or epaulettes (eg DM, ADM,
Cadet Leader, Sergeant, Corporal etc), to please return to our Regional Office they are quite
expensive! This will ensure new young leaders, leaders and managers get their pips, epaulettes
and gorget patches as soon as possible and means we are able to put more money into other parts
of our youth programme. Thank you.
Warm fuzzies

This is a great skill development day where a couple of tests will be run to introduce gold level
teams that are new to competitions to tests in a supportive and non-threatening environment. To be

wonderful training opportunity. Registrations have now closed. Best wishes to those who have

ANZAC Day: Thursday 25 April
We encourage all divisions to attend their local ANZAC parade and show support for this special
occasion. Please remind cadets about the importance of perfect uniform and best behaviour.
There is a section on ANZAC services in the Drill Manual which should answer many of your
questions. However if you do have any unanswered questions about ceremonial protocol, please
consult a Drill Assessor, your District Drill & Ceremonial Officer, or our Regional Drill & CeremonialOfficer Robert Bailey. His email address [email protected]
Advanced First Aid Course: 3-5 May or 18/19/26 May
From this year the Advanced First Aid course will become the curriculum for youth members to gain
their gold first aid badge. This means for cadets to obtain their gold level first aid badge, theyll
need to attend this three day course. This will provide them with a fantastic knowledge of first aid,
plus help to provide a clearer pathway for members interested in doing public duty. Leaders will be
able to attend Advanced First Aid courses as their first aid qualification as well.
3-5 May: This course is primarily for cadets from Hauraki/Coromandel, venue to be advised soon.
Anyone in the region is able to register to attend this course, but priority will go to cadets from
Hauraki/Coromandel. This date was chosen to coincide with the school holidays to aid cadets in
attending all three days.
18, 19, 26 May: This course will be held at Pukekohe St John hall. Anyone in the region is able to
register to attend this course.
The course times are 8:30am - 4pm each day. All three days must be attended to earn the gold
badge. Operational uniform is to be worn (no jackets or ties). The cost of the course is $50 perperson (same price for cadets and leaders).
Remember to use the new course application form to register. Registrations close on the Friday
three weeks prior to the course starting (unless filled earlier). If a course is over-subscribed, we will
prioritise cadets who are close to getting their Grand Priors Award.
A small number of spaces will be reserved on each course for leaders so if any leader would like to
do the course, they should register well in advance of the registration deadline.
More dates will be published next month. We intend to hold 1-2 courses per month to help us catch
up with the backlog caused through not running first aid courses last year.

5pm. Those who have not yet attended a presentation at Government House will receive a
personal invitation to attend. Each recipient is able to invite two guests to attend with them.

Signing Off
Between now and the next issue of the News In Youth, many of us will celebrate Easter, which is a
very special time for many.
We hope that everyone has a safe and happy Easter and for those having days off, please enjoy
them. This month well leave you with a little thought from Lucy, a character in the Peanuts
cartoons by Charles M. Schulz:
All I really need is love, but a little
chocolate now and then doesn't hurt!
