DEAR REALTIME READERS
In business, practicality often goes together with innovation.
Practicality means waiting for the most important changes,
and then thinking carefully about how best to implement
them – if possible, without incurring major costs. Innovation
is about predicting change and developing convincing solu-
tions for the challenges one expects to meet. This issue of
realtime looks at a number of examples of this latter prin-
ciple. First, let us consider innovation in financial informa-
tion technology. Telekurs Financial is responding to the con-
stantly expanding volume of data with its newly designed
market data architecture. Read the article on page 36.
In product design, too, Telekurs Financial has a proven ability
3
editorial
to innovate. This becomes apparent to our customers each time we integrate
new features and data content into the Telekurs iD financial information
product. Each new release of Telekurs iD contains new elements designed
to improve efficiency in the front, middle and back office. Another innova-
tion: thanks to the Telekurs iD html Link, all Telekurs iD users at Landesbank
Liechtenstein AG, for example, now have faster, direct access to a wealth of
financial information from within the bank’s own applications. Read more
about this successful client project on page 15.
Finally, our capacity for innovation is reflected in our success in recognizing
opportunities in global markets. There has been much talk in the press re-
cently of Singapore being the new market leader in private banking. Indeed,
major banks such as Credit Suisse, UBS and Citigroup are all planning to in-
crease their presence in Singapore over the next few years. The key success
factors in this development are the same as those that have helped Switzer-
land achieve success and helped build its reputation as a financial centre.
Find out more about this interesting growth market on page 30.
I wish you all an enjoyable and stimulating read.

pierte Marktdaten-Architektur begegnen will. Lesen Sie dazu

Innover, par contre, consiste à an-
time vous montrera plusieurs exemples d’innovation, notam-
lume accru d’informations disponibles.

TELEKURS UK CREATES CLIENT BASE FOR VDF AND D-U-N-S NUMBERSDuring 2006 Telekurs Financial has successfully promoted the inclusion of D-U-N-S Numbers from D&B in Valordata Feed
(VDF). A number of clients in Luxembourg and the UK have already decided to implement this solution, which presents clear
benefits to financial institutions. With this new data set, banks can keep a much tighter rein on their exposure to groups of
companies, helping them to comply with regulations. Should one of the issuers be in default, then the bank’s exposure to
the defaulting company can now be assessed in hours rather than in weeks or months.
With most banks’ databases running at an instrument level, it is essential that any solution gives them the ability to add a
single code to their instrument master file representing the ultimate parent of the issuer of those instruments. The addition
of ultimate parent links to instruments in Telekurs Financial’s database alongside the Telekurs Company Key gives banks
the ability to create corporate hierarchies for the first time, using VDF. This means that banks are now able to create reports
required under UCITS III fairly simply. Under the present regulatory requirements, such as Basel II and UCITS II, firms need
to be able to manage their risk in a number of ways. Using other information available through VDF, clients can also better
manage risk by country, sector or currency.
At the end of June 2006 Telekurs Financial and D&B agreed additional measures to continue to increase the number of is-
suers which have D-U-N-S Numbers allocated to them in VDF. To date, the number stands at around 60 000 issuers – a fig-
ure which represents over 600 000 financial instruments.
JP MORGAN CHASE CORPORATE CHALLENGE 2006Eighteen motivated runners from Telekurs UK participated in one of the most successful employee road races of the finan-
cial world. Over 300 companies, among them Telekurs UK, sent their staff to the starting block. Mervyn Rodriguez (Data
Services) was Telekurs UK’s fastest runner with a time of 23 minutes and 13 seconds, followed closely by Robin Hyde
(Management Services) and Mark Cookson (Product Services) with a time of around 24 minutes. The race was opened by
world class legend Linford Christie.
The 5.6 kilometre (3.5 mile) event almost certainly
retained its title as the most enduring, successful
sports events of the British financial world. The
20th edition of the JP Morgan Chase Corporate
Challenge saw over 13 000 participants sprinting
through London’s Battersea Park. The organization
made a donation for each entry to the SportsAid
funds. SportsAid is at the forefront of athlete
development in Britain and is the charity for
sports people as it helps the next generation of
young British sportsmen and women to succeed.
The World Series of the JP Morgan Chase Corporate
Challenge is held annually in different capitals and
cities of the world, such as Singapore, Frankfurt,
Sydney or San Francisco.

FUNDAMENTALS: TELEKURS iD OFFERS DETAILED INFORMATION ON UK AND US COMPANIESStarting at the end of 2006, the Telekurs iD financial information display will be offering selected company information
from Hemscott Plc. Hemscott is a specialist with an international reputation for acquiring high quality company informa-
tion, with a strong emphasis on the British and US markets. In the UK, Hemscott collects and processes “fundamentals”
from listed UK and Irish companies with the aid of a historical database that goes back 20 years. Hemscott offers a
similarly broad data coverage in the USA. For Telekurs iD users – especially customer advisors and analysts – Hemscott’s
extensive company information represents genuine added value. Today, long-term investment decisions are based more
than ever before on these fundamentals. The losses suffered by the overvalued dot-coms confirmed this traditional view.
Fundamentals provide pointers to companies’ current and future economic and financial developments. Here is a sum-
mary of the new information offering on US, Irish and UK companies:
– Company Summary from business reports: turnover, earnings per share (EPS) and tax-relevant key figures
– Financial Overview: sales, assets, cash flow, etc.
– Business address details, management details, websites and e-mail addresses
– Estimates from approximately 20 market leaders, such as UBS, Citigroup, Merrill Lynch, etc.
How can Telekurs iD users access this information? A right mouse click on a financial instrument opens an overview of the
fundamentals. This optional service collates the company data into easy-to-digest views. Another optional service sup-
ports a trend that has now become well established with customer advisors: the “Facts Report” – available as an easy-to-
print PDF – provides all company information in a highly readable format. A convenient document that provides the facts
you need when advising customers.

A FAIR-VALUE APPROACH IN THE BOND MARKETIn the past, market participants have had to rely on direct telephone contact with market makers to obtain valuations of
illiquid or exotic investments. However, this method of acquiring information is considered inefficient by the financial in-
dustry, particularly at a time when it is experiencing such rapid growth in automation. There is a clear need for electronic
delivery of price data today. Similarly, financial experts are increasingly looking for objective evidence of fair value in
bond-related management and performance comparisons.
This situation presents a particular challenge to financial institutions and providers of financial information: the market is
demanding round-the-clock pricing for a growing universe of fixed-interest investments. Moreover, the financial industry
operates in a complex, highly regulated environment with specific constraints on reporting, compliance and risk mana-
gement. This increases the pressure on financial information providers to offer a daily valuation of all instruments and to
demonstrate the transparency of their sources.
Telekurs Financial sees a more widespread use of reference prices as the answer to this dilemma. Reference prices are
based on selected quotations, i.e. on prices computed in accordance with modern financial theory. They are acceptable
to all market players and create the necessary transparency in the various applications: compliance, reporting, portfolio
evaluation, etc. In 2007 Telekurs Financial will embark upon a substantial expansion of its existing bond pricing service
in the Valordata Feed (VDF). We will be promoting the fair value approach in the bond market with the timely delivery of
“contributed calculated prices” and “fair values”, with the usual in-depth data coverage for which Telekurs Financial is
well known.
NEW VDF RELEASE RESPONDS TO MARKET NEEDSTelekurs Financial’s Valordata Feed (VDF) delivers in-depth information and so ensures the efficient, high quality process-
ing of security and capital transactions. With the new release, which will be available as of 27 November 2006, VDF cus-
tomers will be provided with more market-driven data fields together with significant innovations in the following areas:
– Structured products and exotic warrants
– Taxes, reporting and regulations
– Cash flow messages for debt instruments, hybrids, structured products, equities or investment funds
– Securities settlement and clearing
VDF supplies basic and corporate actions data in a structured, encoded format as well as valuation prices on over 2.9 mil-
lion financial instruments. With more than 50 message types and approximately 1 500 data fields, VDF offers an extraordi-
nary depth of data together with an extensive history, which allows events to be traced back over a long period. It provides
a platform for Straight Through Processing and is available worldwide as a global product. VDF Change Management regu-
larly updates VDF customers on all VDF releases.
TELEKURS UK SCHAFFT KUNDENBASIS FÜR VDF UND D-U-N-S NUMBERSTelekurs UK hat in diesem Jahr D-U-N-S Numbers von D&B als neue Elemente des Valordata Feeds (VDF) erfolgreich ver-
marktet.
but aggregieren.
Anfang August 2006 haben Telekurs Financial und D&B vereinbart, den Abdeckungsgrad im Valordata Feed (VDF) mit
D-U-N-S Numbers weiter auszubauen.

Compliance, Reporting, Depotbewertungen, etc.

– Financial Overview (aperçu financier): chiffre d’affaires, patrimoine, MBA (cash-flow), etc.

The trading, customer advisory
and securities administration depart-
ments of Liechtensteinische Lan-
desbank AG (LLB) began using
Telekurs iD at the beginning of 2004.
Telekurs iD has proven itself to be
an important source of information
in the daily business of all its users.
Having fast on-screen access to
relevant information is vital to the
customer advisors at LLB. Yet, under
the former system they had to log
on twice – once into the bank’s own
software application and then into
the Telekurs iD financial information
product.
Connected via Telekurs iD html Link
For 140 Telekurs iD users, the new
access mode (Telekurs iD html Link)
solved this problem in the early
part of this year. To query a custody
position, the user now simply right-
clicks the name of a security to view
the on-screen instrument summary
of Telekurs iD html. This efficient
access to Telekurs iD was quick and
easy to set up. The IT specialists
at LLB were able to incorporate
Telekurs iD html Link in their bank’s
system in just five days. This system
supplies all of the relevant appli-
cations used by LLB staff, such as
securities reference data and the
clients’ custody account positions.
Stephan Schmidle, head of the
financial systems department at
LLB comments: “Whenever the staff
use the bank’s system for accessing
information on securities reference
data or clients’ custody account
positions, all it takes is a right mouse
click to get additional information via
Telekurs iD.”
Faster access to information thanks
to Telekurs iD html Link
What are the practical gains for
users? All existing Telekurs iD users
now benefit every day from faster
direct access to the financial infor-
mation provided by Telekurs iD when
they are compiling information from
the bank’s own applications. Plus,
they have direct access to the entire
Telekurs Financial securities data-
base. Portfolio management can be
enhanced very easily with the inclu-
sion of market overviews, news and
management data.
TELEKURS iD DELIVERS ADDED VALUE TO CUSTOMER ADVISORYSince the summer of 2006, Telekurs iD users at Liechtensteinische Landesbank AG (LLB) have been enjoying a new direct
access mode to our financial information product. It now takes no more than a right mouse click on a custody position to
view Telekurs Financial’s comprehensive data offering.

A resounding success
LLB has some very positive things to
say about its successful installation
of Telekurs iD html Link. Stephan
Schmidle, for example: “We have
achieved a resounding success here
– and with a minimum of work.”
LLB uses other products and services
from Telekurs Financial as well as the
Telekurs iD financial information
display. For example, it obtains
financial information from Valordata
Feed (VDF) for updating the bank’s
securities database each day. When
it comes to financial information, LLB
knows it can rely on the customer-
focused product range from Telekurs
Financial.

The London Stock Exchange is one
of the world’s oldest stock ex-
changes and can trace back its
history more than 300 years. Start-
ing life in the 17th century coffee
houses in London, the Exchange
quickly grew to become the City’s
most important financial institution.
Over the following centuries, the
Exchange consistently led the way in
developing a strong, well-regulated
stock market and today lies at the
heart of the global financial com-
munity. The overall business stra-
tegy of the Exchange is to compete
globally in the market for financial
transaction services and become
the market of choice. Furthermore,
the Exchange intends to grow its
existing business and the reach and
scale of its operations through busi-
ness development initiatives, acqui-
sitions, joint ventures and alliances
where appropriate.
Apart from its core activities – which
include securities listing via its two
primary markets (the Main Market
and AIM), trading services for
broking firms to buy and sell secu-
rities, and derivatives trading – the
Exchange also provides the global
market with a range of services, sys-
tems and products designed for the
provision of top quality market infor-
mation. The Exchange’s reference
data is based on its own SEDOL
Masterfile database, which provides
SEDOL and ISIN codes on over 1 mil-
lion securities together. Being the
official numbering agency for the UK,
the London Stock Exchange has been
allocating and administering SEDOL
and ISIN codes to the marketplace
for over 35 years. Through its enhan-
ced SEDOL Masterfile Service, the
Exchange provides customers with
comprehensive reference data and
corporate actions solutions.
True global offering in financial
information
Mark Husler is the head of Refer-
ence Data at the Exchange. In 2002
he initiated an extensive project
which aimed to re-launch a number
of information products (based on
the SEDOL master file). Mark Husler
defined a very important requirement
back then: “We needed to subscribe
to a global corporate action feed to
help us maintain our data set and
with the aim of making the data
offering more global.” It was quite
important from the start that the
Exchange was looking for a provider
which would deliver a true global
offering for any asset class and all
regions. Mark Husler stresses this
point: “This broad coverage was an
absolute prerequisite for this pro-
ject.” Consequently, the Exchange
approached all the large data ven-
dors. Apart from the data coverage
already mentioned, the evaluation
factors also included data quality
with regard to the timeliness of the
information as well as the actual
content. At the end of this evaluation
period, the London Stock Exchange
chose Telekurs Financial as its pro-
vider of global corporate actions.
Telekurs Financial was the perfect
choice for the Exchange to use one
of its international data feeds to
process market data with a high STP
potential: VDF!
A good working relationship
There was one more driver in this
decision. Mark Husler explains:
“Probably one of the major drivers
of this project was the relationship
that we were able to build with all
the in-volved Telekurs staff. Because
of the nature of this complex data
project, we needed people who fully
under-stood our business and could
also answer our high requirements
with regard to the flexibility of the
actual data usage.” A relationship
which could build on the common
goals of both Telekurs Financial and
the London Stock Exchange, that of
being national numbering agencies
for their respective countries. Mark
USING VDF TO SERVICE THE NEEDS OF THE UK FINANCIAL INDUSTRY In 2002, the London Stock Exchange started a very demanding project to re-launch its SEDOL MasterfileTM Service.
Within this project the Exchange chose Valordata Feed (VDF) from Telekurs Financial for a high-quality automated
supply of global corporate actions.
Gill Barker (Strategic Sales, Telekurs UK)

products
Husler: “Our longstanding rela-
tionship certainly helped this
process. The barriers for Telekurs
Financial to understand our business
were much lower compared to some
competitors.” With Valordata Feed,
Telekurs Financial now provides
the Exchange with daily reference
data, global corporate actions infor-
mation, and listing conditions for
securities for the daily updating (or
maintaining) of its global securities
master file. VDF is a fully coded
and structured data feed and this
is certainly an advantage for the
Exchange. It allows the Exchange
to filter all the information it needs,
based on the type of corporate
actions and the type of securities,
and to apply all the necessary chan-
ges to the database. With this proce-
dure, the Exchange can guarantee its
customers high quality data in terms
of coverage and timeliness.
Regulatory standards
A global data provider also needs
to satisfy the financial industry’s
exacting standards. In this regard,
Telekurs Financial – when designing
new data content – continuously
takes into account the latest regu-
latory requirements, such as MiFID
and Basel II. In order to clarify the
relevant aspects of MiFID in terms
of data requirements and to iden-
tify the corresponding risks and
opportunities, Telekurs Financial is
a proactive member of the various
sub-groups of the MiFID Joint Wor-
king Group and is also in continuous
consultation with the Financial Ser-
vices Authority (FSA). With regard to
Basel II, Valordata Feed – through
its content-rich reference data – sup-
plies a wealth of reference data
that can subsequently be fed into
applications for a specific use or
combined with other data for a more
comprehensive solution. Mark Husler
is convinced that Telekurs Financial’s
involvement in regulatory projects
is very important and benefits the
entire financial community. He says:
“I think all data vendors should be
involved in these projects and we are
pleased that Telekurs is proactive in
their approach towards industry stan-
dards and the evolving regulatory
framework.”
The right choice
The verdict of the Exchange on the
choice of VDF is very positive: “Our
SEDOL project was an overall success
and we were right to choose Telekurs
Financial for our global corporate
actions data requirements. The result
of this project was a significantly
improved product with increased
SEDOL coverage both in terms of
instruments and asset classes and
in geographic terms.” Moreover, the
Exchange remains open to new
product offerings from Telekurs
Financial. Mark Husler concludes:
“Any product that allows us to auto-
mate and analyse corporate actions
better is always welcome.”

an legte die London Stock Exchange
bei ihrer Auswahl darauf Wert, dass
es sich um ein wirklich internationa-
les Angebot für alle Anlageklassen
und Regionen handeln sollte. Mark
Husler unterstreicht diesen Punkt:
“Diese breite Datenabdeckung war
eine wichtige Voraussetzung für das
Projekt.” Folglich wandte sich die
London Stock Exchange an alle gros-
sen Datenprovider. Neben der bereits
erwähnten Datenabdeckung umfass-
ten die Kriterien auch die Aktualität
der Daten sowie die Qualität ihres
Inhalts. Am Ende dieses Evaluierungs-
prozesses entschied sich die London

als Lieferanten von internationalen
Corporate-Actions-Daten. Der
Valordata Feed (VDF) von Telekurs
Financial erwies sich für die Börse als
die perfekte Wahl für die Verarbeitung
von Marktdaten mit hohem STP-Poten-
zial!
Eine positive Geschäftsbeziehung
Für diese Entscheidung gab es einen
weiteren wichtigen Faktor. Mark Husler
erläutert: “Für dieses Projekt war die
partnerschaftliche Beziehung, die wir

beitern aufbauen konnten, besonders
wichtig. Aufgrund der Art dieses kom-
plexen Datenprojektes benötigten

die London Stock Exchange offen für

London Stock Exchange, nämlich
als nationale Numbering-Agencies

tifikationsnummern) für ihre jeweili-
gen Länder zu fungieren, aufgebaut
werden. Mark Husler: “Unsere lang-
jährigen Geschäftsbeziehungen
waren diesem Prozess sicherlich
förderlich. Was das Verständnis für
unsere Geschäftstätigkeit betrifft,
hatte Telekurs Financial gegenüber
der Konkurrenz deutliche Vorteile
aufzuweisen.” Über VDF liefert
Telekurs Financial der London Stock
Exchange jetzt täglich Stammdaten,
internationale Corporate-Actions-
Daten und Kotierungsbestimmungen
für die tägliche Aktualisierung und
Pflege ihrer SEDOL-Masterfile-Daten-
bank. VDF ist ein vollständig kodier-
ter und strukturierter Datenfeed und
bietet für die London Stock Exchange
sichtlich Vorteile. Mit VDF kann die
London Stock Exchange alle benö-
tigten Informationen – nach der Art
der Corporate Actions und der Art
der Wertpapiere – filtern und alle
erforderlichen Änderungen an der
Datenbank vornehmen. Mit diesem
Verfahren kann die London Stock
Exchange ihren Kunden hochwertige
Daten hinsichtlich Abdeckung und
Aktualität gewährleisten.
Regulatorische Standards
Ein internationaler Datenanbieter
muss heute ebenso die anspruchs-
vollen und für die Finanzindustrie
wesentlichen regulatorischen Anfor-
derungen erfüllen können (wie z.B.
für MiFID oder Basel II). Die neus-
ten Erkenntnisse berücksichtigt
Telekurs Financial stets bei der
Entwicklung neuer Dateninhalte. Um
die relevanten Aspekte von MiFID
im Hinblick auf Datenanforderungen
zu klären und die entsprechenden
Risiken und Chancen zu erken-
nen, ist Telekurs Financial aktives
Mitglied der verschiedenen MiFID-
Arbeitsgruppen und ist auch an den
Konsultationen mit der Financial
Services Authority (FSA) beteiligt. In
Hinblick auf Basel II bietet Valordata
Feed reichhaltige Wertpapierstamm-
daten an, die für eine spezielle
Nutzung oder in Kombination mit
anderen Daten für eine umfassende
Lösung in die Applikationen inte-
griert werden können. Mark Husler
ist überzeugt, dass das Engagement
von Telekurs Financial in den laufen-
den regulatorischen Projekten äus-
serst wichtig ist und der gesamten
Finanzwelt zugute kommt. “Meines
Erachtens sollten sich alle Daten-
lieferanten an derartigen Projekten
beteiligen. Wir sind über den proak-
tiven Ansatz von Telekurs Financial
bezüglich Branchenstandards und
der Entwicklung eines Regulierungs-

Crée il y a plus de 300 ans, la London
Stock Exchange (LSE) est l’une des
plus anciennes Bourses du monde.
Depuis ses débuts dans les “coffee
shop” de la capitale britannique,
elle a rapidement prospéré pour
devenir le principal établissement
financier de la City londonienne. Au
cours des siècles suivants, la LSE
n’a cessé d’innover, développant un
marché des actions solide et bien
réglementé. Aujourd’hui, la Bourse
de Londres, qui joue un rôle central
au sein de la communauté financière
mondiale, entend offrir des presta-
tions compétitives à l’échelle inter-
nationale en matière de transactions
financières et se positionner comme
un marché de qualité. Elle veut en
outre accroître son activité actuelle
et la portée de ses opérations par
des initiatives de développement
commercial, des acquisitions, des
joint ventures et des alliances.
Outre ses activités fondamentales,
qui comprennent la cotation officielle
via ses deux marchés principaux
(le marché principal et l’AIM), des
services de négoce pour les socié-
tés de courtage (achat et vente de
titres) et le négoce des dérivés, la
LSE propose au marché mondial une
gamme de prestations, de systèmes
et de produits fournissant des infor-
mations de grande qualité sur les
marchés. Pour ce faire, la LSE s’ap-
puie sur sa propre base de données:
la SEDOL Masterfile. Celle-ci génère
les codes SEDOL et ISIN pour environ
1 million de titres. Agence de codi-
fication officielle du Royaume-Uni,
la London Stock Exchange attribue
et administre ces codes depuis plus
de 35 ans. Le service étendu SEDOL
Masterfile lui permet de fournir à ses
clients des caractéristiques complètes
et des solutions en matière d’opéra-
tions sur titres.
Une offre globale d’informations
financières
Responsable du groupe “reference
data” à la LSE, Mark Husler a donné
en 2002 le coup d’envoi d’un impor-
tant projet visant à relancer plusieurs
produits d’information, basés sur le
SEDOL Masterfile. À l’époque, il avait
défini des exigences importantes:
“Nous devions trouver un flux de
données relatives aux opérations sur
titres du monde entier afin de main-
tenir notre offre et l’internationaliser
davantage.”
L’entreprise
suisse l’a convaincue d’utiliser l’un
de ses produits phares en matière de
traitement informatique d’informa-
tions financières à fort potentiel STP:
Valordata Feed (VDF).

Autre
atout probable pour la LSE: VDF étant
un flux de données entièrement codé
et structuré, il permet de filtrer les
informations, par type d’OST et de
titres et d’appliquer les changements
nécessaires à la base de données. La
LSE peut ainsi garantir à ses clients
des données de grande qualité en ter-
mes de couverture et d’actualisation.
Normes réglementaires
Un fournisseur international de
données doit également répondre
aux normes élevées en vigueur
dans le secteur financier. Lors de la
conception d’un nouveau contenu de
données, Telekurs Financial tient tou-
jours compte des dernières normes
réglementaires telles que la directive
MiFID ou Bâle II. Dans un souci de
clarifier les aspects pertinents de
MiFID en termes d’exigences en
matière de données et d’identifier
les opportunités et les risques y affé-
rents, Telekurs Financial a participé
de manière proactive à tous les grou-
pes de travail techniques de MiFID
et est en consultation permanente
avec l’autorité régulatrice britanni-
que, la Financial Services Authority
(FSA). En ce qui concerne Bâle II,
VDF constitue, par la richesse de ses
caractéristiques, une source précise
de données pouvant être intégrées
dans d’autres applications ou com-
binées avec d’autres données. Mark
Husler est convaincu de l’importance
de l’engagement de Telekurs Finan-
cial dans les projets réglementaires
et de l’intérêt que cela présente
pour la communauté financière
toute entière: “Je pense que tous les
fournisseurs de données devraient
être davantage impliqués dans ces
projets à l’avenir! Une démarche
proactive pour ces questions est
réellement importante.”
Un franc succès
La LSE dresse un bilan très positif
de l’exploitation de Valordata Feed:
“Notre projet SEDOL a été une réus-
site totale, et nous nous félicitons

TELEKURS iD JAVA: HIGHLIGHTS OF THE NEW RELEASEHeinz Linsi (Product Management)
Telekurs iD users have been enjoying the benefits of improved user-friendliness since August 2006. The new “Multiple
Tabbed List”, for instance, has made daily use of the financial information product much more efficient. Telekurs iD is
establishing itself as a display in all sectors of the financial industry, such as investment advisory, analysis and back-
office functions. Telekurs Financial has been supporting this focus with the development of new screens and specific
financial information. Here are the main new features at a glance:
The new Trade Overview Screen is designed to maximize price immediacy. In addition to real-time prices from all the
world’s financial markets, this screen offers important additional information that is indispensable for traders and in-
vestment advisors. The buzzword here is “Level 2 data”. For virt-x, SWX and the London Stock Exchange (LSE), all prices
on the buying and selling sides are shown together with the appropriate volume information. And, as an added bonus,
you can also load your own user lists onto the Trade Overview Screen. You will find this screen under “Global Screens”,
“Trading” or “Advisory”.
The Multiple Tabbed List makes it easier to find your way around in Telekurs iD, which means greater efficiency in your
daily business. Simply load your five most frequently used lists into a single window. Use the tabs in the upper bar on
your screen to maintain an overview and to open the individual lists.
This is how easy it is to get to your Multiple Tabbed List: Type .ml in the command line to see the appropriate viewer
appear on your display. Drag and drop all the lists you require (including user lists) into the viewer and store the view as
a screen – ideally, as soon as it is complete.

SINGAPORE: A PRIVATE BANKING TIGERIn the financial world Switzerland enjoys an unchallenged reputation as the world leader in private banking services.
An extremely stable economy and many years of experience and expertise have helped Swiss banks attain their present
status. In recent years, however, Singapore has been developing as a further centre of financial advisory and other ser-
vices to high net worth individuals.
Michel Benedetti (realtime)
The offensives undertaken by major
international banks often give the
financial industry a major clue as to
whether recent developments in the
sector are here to stay. Credit Suisse,
for example, is planning a strong pre-
sence in the Singapore market with
the massive expansion of its “Center
of Excellence”. The new regional
headquarters are designed as an in-
ternational back office for the whole
of South-East Asia, with a headcount
that is expected to rise to around
3 100 by 2007. Alongside Citigroup,
the world’s largest bank, and the
British HSBC, Credit Suisse and UBS
currently make up the top four private
bankers in Singapore.
Success factors in private banking
If a financial centre is to specialize in
private banking, it must avoid con-
centrating too sharply on potential
short-term returns. Rather, the suc-
cess factors that are crucial here are
those which have also been factors
in Switzerland’s status and success.
It goes without saying that these
include significant, visible growth in
client assets. According to estimates
from the financial community, pri-
vate assets under management by
banks in Singapore amount to 150
– 170 billion US-Dollars. One major
international bank is estimating that
private client assets in South-East
Asia (excluding Japan) will grow by
7.6 percent per year up to 2007. One
of the region’s fastest-growing client
groups are the NRIs, or non-resident
Indians. According to Merrill Lynch/
Cap Gemini’s “World Wealth Report”,
there are some 20 million NRIs around
the world, 150 000 of whom are mil-
lionaires. Taken together, this client
group has an investible surplus of
360 billion US-Dollars.
A small-scale economic miracle
Just as vital to the development of a
private banking centre is the stability
of the host economy, because private
banking clients often wish to invest
their assets over the long term, if not
over generations. The positive effects
that a liberal economic policy has had
on Singapore are beyond dispute. Fur-
thermore, the Singapore government
is determined to compete with Hong
Kong for the title of Asia’s most im-
portant financial centre. Coming right
after London, New York and Tokyo,
Singapore is now the world’s number
four foreign exchange trading centre,
while its stock exchange, Singapore
Exchange Limited (SGX), is one of
Asia’s largest. Finally, it is worth men-
tioning Singapore’s banking confiden-
tiality laws. The tiger state ferociously
defends this legislation, which was
drafted for the financial sector along
the same lines as its Swiss model.
The basic rule is that the banks are
not allowed to pass any client infor-
mation whatsoever to third parties
although, just as in Switzerland,
certain exceptions apply (under the
2001 Banking Act) to the judicial
authorities.
Innovations in financial information
In addition to its economic strength,
the financial market has displayed a
degree of originality where financial
information is concerned. Addition-
ally, Singapore offers the technologi-
cal framework required to support
the availability and distribution of
financial data. This is illustrated by
two recent examples. Around a year
ago, “Islamic Banking” came to the
attention of the international financial
world as an interesting growth seg-
ment. In 2005, Moody’s Investor Ser-
vices estimated that, globally, there
were around 300 Islamic banks with
more than 250 billion US-Dollars in
assets under management. Moody’s
also estimates that this segment is
growing at 10–15 percent a year. Is-
lamic financial instruments must be
structured in accordance with Islamic
(or “Sharia”) law. Sharia law forbids
Muslims to charge interest or to gam-
ble, and this is interpreted to cover
forum
31
many forms of derivatives, as well as
conventional insurance policies. It
means that lending, derivatives and
bonds, as well as investments in com-
panies which have high levels of bor-
rowed capital, are all prohibited under
Sharia law. Islamic banking is based
on the creation of constructs which
comply with Islamic law while also
offering the same benefits as “forbid-
den” financial transactions. Singapore
is actually something of a newcomer
in this area, but makes up in ambition
what it lacks in experience. For exam-
ple, the financial sector is planning to
establish a banking hub for Islamic in-
vestment funds, as well as an Islamic
interbank money market.
Telekurs Financial pursuing dual
strategy
How has an international data provi-
der like Telekurs Financial responded
to these challenges? In view of the
increasing presence of major Swiss
banks on the Singapore market and
in line with its international outlook,
Telekurs Financial is pursuing a suc-
cessful dual strategy in marketing its
financial information and financial
information products. The large Swiss
banks have already been using
Telekurs Financial information pro-
ducts in South-East Asia. They are
served out of head office in Zurich by
a team of experienced global account
managers. According to Livio Lee
Rocchetti, Global Account Manager at
Telekurs Financial, these banks have
displayed a significant demand for
local financial data. With its global
data coverage Telekurs Financial is
able to respond fast to varying and
individual customer needs regarding
the dissemination of financial infor-
mation. Telekurs Financial also offers
flexible solutions for financial infor-
mation displays. Lee Rocchetti:
“One major Swiss bank is aiming
to set up 600 display workstations
in Singapore by the end of 2006. In
doing so, they can call upon the flexi-
ble solutions offered by Telekurs
Financial.” Through a subsidiary,
Telekurs Financial itself has had a
presence on the Singapore market
since the late 1980s. As a result, it
has many years of local experience
and has always been able to meet
the particular needs of Singapore’s
banking sector with the ongoing
evolution of its customer-friendly
display and processing products.
Just recently, the ranks of Telekurs
Singapore’s big-name customers
were swelled further by a Swiss
private bank and a major North Ame-
rican institution, reports Telekurs
Singapore Managing Director Paul
Bollhalder.

net worth individuals”.
Michel Benedetti (realtime)
Die Offensiven der internationalen
Grossbanken geben der Finanzindu-
strie oft wichtige Hinweise darüber,
ob sich eine neue Entwicklung im
Finanzsektor als nachhaltig erweist.
Die Credit Suisse plant beispielsweise
mit dem massiven Ausbau ihres “Cen-
ter of Excellence” in Singapur, eine
starke Präsenz auf dem Finanzplatz
zu markieren. Der neue Firmensitz ist
als internationales Backoffice für Süd-
ostasien konzipiert, wobei sich der
Mitarbeiterbestand bis 2007 auf etwa
3 100 erhöhen soll. Mit der Citigroup,
der weltgrössten Bank, und dem bri-
tischen Finanzinstitut HSBC gehören
die Credit Suisse und die UBS mo-
mentan zu den top Vier im Singapurer
Private Banking.
Erfolgsfaktoren für Private Banking
Damit ein Finanzplatz zu einem Pri-
vate-Banking-Pol wird, müssen nicht
nur kurzfristige Renditemöglichkeiten
verfolgt werden, wie es vielfach bei
Schwellenländern der Fall ist. Viel-
mehr sind hier Erfolgsfaktoren aus-
schlaggebend, die auch der Schweiz
zu ihrem Ansehen und Erfolg verhol-
fen haben. Dazu gehört sicher ein er-
kennbarer und markanter Zuwachs an
Kundenvermögen. Dazu ein paar Fak-
ten: Gemäss Schätzungen aus Finanz-
kreisen beträgt das von Banken ver-
waltete Privatvermögen in Singapur
um die 150 – 170 Milliarden US-Dollar.
Eine internationale Grossbank schätzt,
dass das Wachstum der privaten
Kundenvermögen in Südostasien (aus-
genommen Japan) bis 2007 um 7,6
Prozent pro Jahr steigen wird. Zu einer
wachstumsstarken Kundengruppe
der Region gehören auch die so ge-
nannten NRIs (non-resident Indians;
zu Deutsch: nicht-domizilierte Inder).
Gemäss dem “World Wealth Report”
von Merrill Lynch/Cap Gemini gibt es
weltweit etwa 20 Millionen NRIs, von
denen 150 000 als Millionäre gelten,
mit einem Investitionspotential von
rund 360 Milliarden US-Dollar.
Ein Wirtschaftswunder auf kleinem
Territorium
Ebenso entscheidend für die Entwick-
lung zu einem Private-Banking-Pol
ist die wirtschaftliche Stabilität des
Finanzplatzes, denn Private-Banking-
Kunden möchten ihr Vermögen oft
längerfristig, wenn nicht über Ge-
nerationen, anlegen. Die positiven
Wirkungen einer liberalen Wirtschafts-
politik sind für Singapur unbestreitbar.
Zudem setzt es sich die Singapurer
Regierung zum Ziel, dem Konkurrenten
Hongkong den Rang als wichtigster
Finanzplatz Asiens streitig zu machen.
Singapur ist heute – gleich nach Lon-
don, New York und Tokyo – die welt-
weite Nummer Vier im Forex-Handel
und Singapurs Börse, die Singapore
Exchange Limited (SGX), gilt als einer
der grössten Handelsplätze Asiens.
Schliesslich ist noch das Singapurer
Bankgeheimnis zu erwähnen. Der
Tigerstaat setzt sich vehement für die
Wahrung dieser Gesetzgebung ein,
die getreu dem Schweizer Vorbild für
den Finanzplatz entworfen wurde.
Die Grundregel lautet, dass keinerlei
Kundeninformationen von einer Bank
an andere Personen weitergegeben
werden dürfen, wobei natürlich – wie
in der Schweiz – gewisse Ausnahme-
regelungen (unter dem Banking Act
2001) für Justizbehörden gelten.
Innovationen für Finanzinformationen
Neben seiner wirtschaftlichen Stärke
zeigt sich der Finanzmarkt innovativ,
was die Ausgestaltung von Finanz-
informationen betrifft. Dies soll ein
aktuelles Beispiel darlegen. Seit etwa
einem Jahr ist “Islamic Banking” von
der internationalen Finanzwelt als
interessantes Wachstumssegment
identifiziert worden. Moody’s Investor
Services hat 2005 geschätzt, dass es
weltweit rund 300 islamische Finanz-
institute mit mehr als 250 Milliarden
US-Dollar Anlagevermögen gibt.
Ebenso schätzt Moody’s die Wachs-
tumsrate in diesem Segment auf 10
bis 15 Prozent pro Jahr ein. Islamische
abdeckt werden. Gerade erst konnte
eine Schweizer Privatbank sowie eine
nordamerikanische Grossbank in den
Kreis der namhaften Kunden von
Telekurs Singapore aufgenommen
werden, weiss Paul Bollhalder,
Geschäftsstellenleiter Telekurs
Singapore, zu berichten.
33
forum
Finanzinstrumente müssen nach der
islamischen Gesetzgebung, der so ge-
nannten Sharia, ausgestaltet werden.
Die Sharia verbietet Muslimen die
Verrechnung von Zinsen und Glücks-
spiele, wozu nach der Auslegung auch
viele Derivate sowie konventionelle
Versicherungslösungen gezählt wer-
den. Verboten sind gemäss Sharia
Kreditgeschäfte, Derivate und Obliga-
tionen, doch ebenso die Auswahl von
Unternehmen, die einen hohen Anteil
an Fremdkapital in ihrer Bilanz aufwei-
sen. Islamic Banking besteht darin,
Konstrukte zu schaffen, die einerseits
mit dem Gesetz konform gehen,
aber anderseits die gleichen Vorzüge
bieten wie die “unerlaubten” Finanz-
geschäfte. Singapur gilt eigentlich als
Neuling in diesem Bereich, möchte
dies aber mit ehrgeizigen Zielen kom-
pensieren. So plant der Finanzmarkt
unter anderem die Schaffung eines
Bankenhubs für Islamische Fonds und
eines islamischen Interbank-Geld-
Marktes.
Doppelstrategie von Telekurs
Financial
Wie hat ein internationaler Daten-
provider wie Telekurs Financial auf
diese Herausforderungen reagiert?
Angesichts der wachsenden Präsenz
von Schweizer Grossbanken auf dem
Finanzplatz und getreu seiner interna-
tionalen Ausrichtung verfolgt Telekurs
Financial bezüglich der Vermarktung
von Finanzinformationen eine erfolg-
reiche Doppelstrategie. Schweizer
Grossbanken setzten bereits die
Produktpalette von Telekurs Financial
in dieser Region ein. Betreut werden
sie vom Zürcher Hauptsitz aus von
einem Team von erfahrenen Global-
Account-Managern. Gemäss Livio Lee
Rocchetti, Global Account Manager
bei Telekurs Financial, haben diese
Finanzinstitute einen grossen Bedarf
an lokalen Finanzdaten angemeldet.
Mit einer globalen Abdeckung an Fi-
nanzinformationen ist Telekurs Finan-
cial bereit, schnell und individuell auf
verschiedene Kundenbedürfnisse zu
reagieren. Bezüglich dem Display von
Finanzinformationen bietet Telekurs
Financial ebenfalls flexible Lösungen
an. Dazu Lee Rocchetti: “Eine Schwei-
zer Grossbank will bis Ende 2006 in
Singapur 600 Displayarbeitsstatio-
nen aufbauen. Dabei kann sie auf
die flexiblen Lösungen von Telekurs
Financial bauen.”

Michel Benedetti (realtime)
Les offensives des grandes banques
donnent souvent des indices précieux
pour déterminer le caractère pérenne
d’une tendance dans le secteur fi-
nancier. Ainsi, le projet d’extension
du “Center of Excellence” du Credit
Suisse à Singapour témoigne d’une
volonté de s’affirmer durablement sur
cette place financière. Conçu comme
un pole de compétence en matière
d’opérations de back-office de l’Asie
du Sud-Est, le nouveau siège de la
société devrait compter environ 3 100
collaborateurs d’ici 2007. Avec Citi-
group, première banque mondiale, et
l’établissement financier britannique
HSBC, le Credit Suisse et UBS appar-
tiennent au quatuor de tête du private
banking singapourien.
Les facteurs de réussite dans le
private banking
2007. Un autre segment de clientèle
est également en pleine expansion:
les NRI (“non-resident Indians” ou In-
diens installés à l’étranger). Le “World
Wealth Report” de Merrill Lynch/Cap
Gemini chiffre à 20 millions le nombre
de NRI à travers le monde (dont
150 000 millionnaires), ce qui repré-
sente un potentiel d’investissement
de quelque 360 milliards de dollars
américains.
Un miracle économique sur un
territoire minuscule
Le développement d’un pôle de
private banking passe aussi par la
stabilité économique de la place
financière en question, les clients
souhaitant souvent placer leur fortune
à long terme, voire de génération en
génération. Force est de constater que
la politique économique libérale ad-
optée par Singapour a largement porté
ses fruits. Aujourd’hui, Singapour
se classe en quatrième position sur
le Forex après Londres, New York et
Tokyo, et la Singapore Exchange Limi-
ted (SGX) est considérée comme une
des plus grandes places boursières
d’Asie. Enfin, il convient d’évoquer le
secret bancaire. Singapour milite haut
35
forum
segment serait compris, toujours
selon Moody’s, entre 10 – 15 pour-
cent. Les instruments financiers
doivent être conçus conformément à
la loi islamique, la “charia”. Celle-ci
interdit aux musulmans l’usure et les
jeux de hasard (une interdiction qui
s’applique aussi à de nombreux dé-
rivés, ainsi qu’aux solutions d’assu-
rance traditionnelles). Sont également
prohibées les opérations de crédit,
les dérivés, les obligations, ainsi que
la sélection d’entreprises ayant une
forte proportion de capitaux étrangers
portés au bilan. La finance islamique
consiste à créer des produits d’une
part conformes aux principes religieux
musulmans et d’autre part présentant
les mêmes avantages que les pro-
duits traditionnels. Bien que nouveau
dans le domaine, Singapour entend
bien compenser son manque appa-
rent d’expérience par des objectifs
ambitieux, envisageant notamment
la création d’un noyau bancaire pour
les fonds islamiques et d’un marché
interbancaire islamique.
La double stratégie de Telekurs
Financial
Comment un fournisseur de données
international comme Telekurs
Financial a-t-il réagi à ce défi? Compte
tenu de la présence grandissante
des grandes banques suisses sur le
marché singapourien, Telekurs
Financial, qui mène par ailleurs
depuis longtemps une politique de
développement à l’international, a
déployé une double stratégie de
commercialisation des informations
financières. Cette stratégie s’est
révélée payante, les grands établisse-
ments bancaires suisses actifs dans
la région ayant opté pour la gamme
de produits de Telekurs Financial.
Le suivi est assuré depuis le siège
de Zurich par une équipe de Global
Account Managers chevronnés. Selon
Livio Lee Rocchetti, Global Account
Manager chez Telekurs Financial,
ces banques ont un grand besoin de
données financières locales. Telekurs
Financial peut répondre aux besoins
de ses différents clients rapidement,
avec des données de qualité supé-
rieure et ciblées. À cela s’ajoute de
nombreuses solutions flexibles en
matière de produits de visualisation.
“Une grande banque suisse, qui sou-
haite équiper 600 postes de travail
d’ici fin 2006, a d’ailleurs fait appel à
nous. souligne Lee Rocchetti. Telekurs
Financial est présent à Singapour
depuis le début des années 1980
avec sa propre filiale. Cette longue ex-
périence locale et l’évolution perma-
nente de ses produits lui ont permis
de toujours proposer des solutions
de visualisation ou de traitement
adaptées aux besoins de ses clients.
L’entreprise a su ainsi conquérir des
clients prestigieux, notamment une
banque privée suisse et une grande
banque américaine, conclut Paul
Bollhalder, président de Telekurs
Singapour.

STATE-OF-THE-ART ARCHITECTURE FOR MARKET DATATelekurs Financial has redesigned its entire data processing chain. The main objectives of this redesign were to reduce
latency in the light of growing data volumes and to achieve a more use-driven distribution of market data.
Mirko Silvestri (Product Management), Christoph Hunziker (NMA Project Management)
Greater market liquidity, shorter
transaction cycles and a host of
new financial products have led to
exponential growth in the volume
of financial information in recent
years. Availability also plays an in-
creasingly important role, reinforced
by the continuing automation of
trading. Over the past six years, the
amount of financial information has
increased nearly tenfold, and experts
are already expecting another such
increase between now and 2010. By
comparison, the CPU speed of an
average PC has only quadrupled dur-
ing the same period. The IT action
plan for coping with this vast volume
of data without compromising infor-
mation quality no longer relies purely
on the periodic doubling of system
processing power but requires more
efficient processing and on use-
driven distribution of data.
Decentralized data processing
Telekurs Financial began to upgrade
its entire in-house processing chain
for market data at the beginning
of last year with the launch of the
NMA project (New Market Data
Architecture). The currently centrali-
zed processing will be divided into
three interlinked centres in Stamford
(USA), Zurich and Singapore.
Specialized servers in each of the
data processing centres will be
responsible for consolidating the
primary data sources, for check-
ing data quality, for calculating and
forwarding key figures, and for sup-
plying a variety of data services such
as intraday, historical time series
and news. By implementing a lean
processing approach, this new mar-
ket data architecture will offer a level
of scalability that will meet our needs
for the future.
Reduced latency
With the reduction in transmission
distances and outsourcing of data
processing, latency – the time it
takes for Telekurs Financial to pro-
cess and incoming resend data – will
be essentially reduced for local data.
Moreover, it will be possible to proc-
ess and distribute future increasing
data volumes.
Data from the primary data sources is fed into three in-terlinked centres. Here the data is consolidated, and the original data is supplemented with additional informa-tion. Under this 3-site concept , the end product re-ceived by a customer in Europe, for instance, consists of a datafeed made up of direct fees from the US market plus added-value feeds from the relevant EU markets.

More flexible data retrieval
Data will still be retrieved via a stan-
dardized Telekurs Financial inter-
face. Customers will have the op-
tion of using their own server or the
customer server zone provided by
Telekurs Financial. To make sure that
the data supplied precisely matches
their needs, customers can define
different characteristics to specific
data sets. These data sets are made
up of a selected basic feed for each
market together with the previously
mentioned data components, and are
supplied as consolidated data feeds.
The improved flexibility of the infor-
mation retrieval process has been
designed to be much more respon-
sive to customer needs.
Here are a few applications to illus-
trate the usability of this new archi-
tecture:
– Direct feeds with lower latency,
as needed in trading
– Complementary or backup feed to
the existing infrastructure
– Feeds with added-value for use in
display applications
– Selective access to real-time prices
for portfolio management systems
and for analyses of all types in
accordance with the regulatory
requirements
– Protection of customer systems
against high data volumes
The use of a single interface ensures
consistency of data across all cus-
tomer departments. The NMA feeds
are aimed equally at traditional
financial service providers, medium
to large non-institutionals, portal
providers and media companies.

Mirko Silvestri (Product Management), Christoph Hunziker (Projektleitung NMA)
Mehr Marktliquidität, kürzere Trans-
aktionszyklen und eine Vielzahl an
neuen Finanzprodukten haben in den
vergangenen Jahren zu einem expo-
nentiellen Anstieg der Finanzinforma-
tionen geführt. Gleichzeitig spielt die
zeitliche Verfügbarkeit eine immer
bedeutendere Rolle, welche durch die
voranschreitende Automatisierung im
Handel verstärkt wird. In den letzen
sechs Jahren hat sich die Menge an
Finanzinformationen beinahe ver-
zehnfacht, heutige Prognosen
sprechen bereits von einem Wachs-
tum der gleichen Proportion bis ins
Jahr 2010. Im Vergleich dazu hat sich
bis heute die CPU-Taktrate eines
handelsüblichen PC lediglich vervier-
facht. Der IT-Aktionsplan zur Bewäl-
tigung dieser hohen Datenvolumen,
ohne Verlust der Informationsquali-
tät, kann sich dabei nicht mehr auf
das stetige Verdoppeln der Verarbei-
tungssysteme beschränken, sondern
erfordert eine effiziente Verarbei-
tung und eine nutzungsorientierte
Verteilung der Daten.
Dezentralisierung der
Datenverarbeitung
Telekurs Financial hat deshalb zu
Beginn des vergangenen Jahres mit
dem Projekt NMA (Neue-Marktdaten-
Architektur) begonnen, die gesamte
interne Verarbeitungskette für Markt-
daten zu überarbeiten. Die bisher
zentrale Datenverarbeitung wird neu
über drei miteinander verbundene
Zentren in Stamford (USA), Zürich
und Singapur erfolgen.
Spezialisierte Server in den einzel-
nen Verarbeitungszentren überneh-
men dabei die Konsolidierung der
primären Datenquellen, führen
Datenqualitäts-Checks durch,
berechnen und leiten Kennzahlen
ab und stellen verschiedene Daten-
Services (wie z.B. Intraday/histo-
rische Zeitreihen oder News) zur
Verfügung. Die neue Marktdaten-
architektur wird eine schlanke Ver-
arbeitung erreichen, und es werden
zudem weitere zukunftssichere Ska-
lierungsmöglichkeiten geschaffen.
Verringerung der Latency
Mit der Verkürzung der Übermitt-
lungsdistanzen und Auslagerung
der Verarbeitungsprozesse soll die
Latency – gemessen vom Eintritt der
Daten in die Verarbeitung von
Telekurs Financial bis zum Austritt
aus der Verarbeitungskette – für
lokale Daten wesentlich verringert
werden. Auch wird es möglich sein,
zukünftige anwachsende Datenvolu-
men zu verarbeiten und auszuliefern.
Flexibilität des Datenbezugs
Der Bezug der Daten wird wie bisher
über eine standardisierte Program-
mierschnittstelle von Telekurs
Financial erfolgen. Kunden kön-
nen dabei wahlweise eigene Server
einsetzen oder die von Telekurs
Financial zur Verfügung gestellte
Kundenserverzone nutzen. Um eine
bedarfsgerechte Lieferung der Daten
zu erreichen, können spezifische Da-
tensets mit unterschiedlichen Merk-
malen vom Kunden definiert werden.
Diese Datensets setzen sich zusam-
men aus der Auswahl eines Basis-
feeds pro Börse sowie aus den be-
reits erwähnten Datenbestandteilen
und werden als konsolidierte Daten-
feeds geliefert. Mit dieser Flexibilität
des Informationsbezuges werden die
Kundenbedürfnisse optimal abge-
stimmt. Dazu einige Anwendungen:
– Directfeeds mit geringer Latency,
speziell für das Trading
– Komplementäre oder Backup-Feeds
in die bestehende Infrastruktur
– Feeds mit Added-Value für die Ein-
speisung in Displayanwendungen
– Selektiver Bezug von Real-Time-
Kursen für Portfolio-Management-
Systeme und für Auswertungen
aller Art gemäss den regulato-
rischen Anforderungen
forum
39
– Schutz der Kundensysteme gegen
die hohen Datenvolumen
Da nur eine Schnittstelle verwen-
det wird, kann die Datenkonsistenz
auch über alle Einsatzbereiche eines
Kunden gewährleistet werden. Die
NMA-Feeds sind damit gleichermas-
sen an traditionelle Finanzdienst-
leister, mittlere bis grosse nicht
Institutionelle, Portalanbieter sowie
Medienunternehmen gerichtet.

Au cours de ces dernières années,
l’augmentation de la liquidité du
marché, le raccourcissement des
cycles de transaction et la multiplica-
tion des nouveaux produits finan-
ciers ont suscité une croissance ex-
ponentielle des données financières.
Parallèlement, la rapidité de leur
mise à disposition revêt une
importance toujours plus grande,
renforcée par l’automatisation
croissante des transactions. Ces
six dernières années, le volume des
données financières a pratiquement
été multiplié par dix et les prévisions
actuelles laissent envisager une pro-
gression comparable d’ici à 2010.
Dans le même temps, la vitesse des
processeurs des PC du commerce n’a
que quadruplé. Le plan d’action IT
souplesse.
utilisateurs.

exploitations de tous types, con-

L’utilisation d’une seule interface

Regulation, like all change, can be
viewed in several ways. It can be
viewed as a further overhead to be
suffered and dealt with, simply adding
cost, or it can be viewed as an oppor-
tunity for new business and services.
MiFID for example will help firms in
passporting services around the Euro-
pean Union. The directive certainly
will raise costs for investment firms.
The flip side though is that – for a
UK company, for example – instead
of having access to 60 million poten-
tial clients, the market increases to
almost 460 million!
As the effects of Basel II, Sarbanes-
Oxley and the US Patriot act take hold,
more and clearer data will need to be
reported back to the regulators. Firms
risk fines and reputation damage if
they continue to have inconsistent or
incorrect data on securities that they
hold or have traded (see box below).
Reference data: risk and cost analysis
Charging for data such as identifiers,
index component data and ratings has
been another development in recent
years. Many data users ask the ques-
tion “Who owns the data?”. Data ven-
dors and firms’ compliance depart-
ments have a large staff making sure
that licence agreements are honoured
and that the correct fees are paid.
Where once issuing an instrument
identifier was considered as a neces-
sary part of conducting business, a
number of issuers now see this as a
further revenue raising exercise, with
the London Stock Exchange and Stan-
dard & Poor’s (S&P) collecting fees for
SEDOLs and CUSIPs and S&P looking
to extract revenue from users of ISINs
which embed CUSIPs as well. Telekurs
Financial, as the National Numbering
Agency for Switzerland and Liechten-
stein, still provides Valoren codes at
no extra charge to its clients.
THE COMING CHALLENGES FOR REFERENCE DATA Regulation, data ownership discussions, new alternative forms of investment and enterprise solutions are all contriving
to challenge reference data.
Richard Newbury (Head of Product Services, Telekurs UK)
Regulatory fines –> cost
Legal action from customers –> cost
Missing opportunities for elective payouts –> risk & cost
Missed corporate actions –> risk & cost
Payout of incorrect amount / accrual of incorrect amount –> risk & cost
Incorrect taxation and incorrect exchange of information –> risk
The increasing use of “alternative”
asset classes (such as mortgage and
asset-backed securities and hybrid
instruments, such as Baskets and
GOALS) mean that a new level of
reference data – or at least linkage
to underlying instruments – needs
to be maintained. The question this
raises is “How much of a lag is there
between the need and that need
being filled?”. The auditor’s question
will naturally be “How are you dealing
with that need in the meantime?”
Telekurs Financial’s positive data
strategy means that hybrid instru-
ments and other alternative invest-
ment types are normally available
or can be added very quickly to the
Valordata Feed (VDF).
Another challenge which firms can
face is having to use multiple copies
of data which don’t agree. A large
number of financial firms have
attempted to implement Enterprise
Data Management (EDM). This means
that all departments of a firm access
the same set of reference data. By
firms’ own admissions, there have
been varying degrees of success in
implementing such solutions. Most
firms seem to continue to have ad-
ditional silo’d solutions as well as an
forum
43
EDM solution. The majority of firms
seem to have silo’d solutions, with
databases duplicated many times
across the organization, all fed by
data feeds from multiple vendors.
The risk inherent in these models
means that there will almost certain-
ly be discrepancies between data
sources. Telekurs Financial’s
Valordata Feed (VDF) is a service
that can be used on an enterprise-
wide scale to provide reference data
along with other data in a consoli-
dated, structured way. Of course,
finding a “golden copy” is as elusive
as it has ever been. Despite the fact
that there are many more sources of
information today than there were
ten years ago, it seems that there are
as many “right” answers as there are
data sources. Some readers might be
lucky enough to drive a BMW. What
is the name of the company that
made your car? (see box).
Ask three data vendors and you get
three different answers. The com-
pany itself says it is called: Bayer-
ische Motoren Werke Aktiengesell-
schaft. So, no one was strictly
wrong, but for an STP or EDM solu-
tion, nearly right is still wrong.
As more groups work on creating
standards for reference data and yet
more work on pushing the require-
ments for standards back to issuers,
it is sure that changes to reference
data will appear in the coming years.
It promises to be an interesting
period.

Regulatorische Änderungen können
wie alle Veränderungen unterschied-
lich aufgenommen werden: als eine
weitere Belastung, als Kostenerhö-
hung oder als Chance für neue Ge-
schäfte und Dienstleistungen. MiFID
beispielsweise bietet Unternehmen
die Chance, ihre Dienstleistungen EU-
weit anzubieten. Die Richtlinie wird
sicherlich zu einer Kostensteigerung
für Investment-Unternehmen führen.
Andererseits wird sich das Marktpo-
tenzial zum Beispiel für ein britisches
Unternehmen von 60 auf 460 Millio-
nen (!) potenzielle Kunden ausweiten.
Infolge von Basel II, der Sarbanes-
Oxley-Regulierungen und des US-
Patriot-Gesetzes werden umfassen-
dere und inhaltlich eindeutigere Daten
für das Reporting an die Aufsichtsbe-
hörden benötigt. Unternehmen riskie-
ren Geldstrafen und Rufschädigung,
wenn sie weiterhin widersprüchliche
oder falsche Daten zu von ihnen
gehaltenen oder gehandelten Wert-
papieren vorweisen (siehe Kasten
unten).
Die Berechnung von Gebühren für
Wertpapier-Kennnummern, Indexkom-
ponenten und Ratings ist seit einigen
Jahren eine weitere Neuentwicklung.
Viele Datennutzer stellen sich jetzt
die Frage, wer das Eigentum an den
Daten hält. Datenlieferanten und die
Compliance-Abteilungen der Invest-
mentunternehmen verfügen über
eine beträchtliche Anzahl Mitarbeiter,
deren Aufgabe es ist zu gewährleis-
ten, dass Lizenzvereinbarungen ein-
gehalten und die korrekten Gebühren
bezahlt werden.
Während die Ausstellung einer Wert-
papierkennnummer früher als Teil
der Dienstleistung betrachtet wurde,
sehen dies einige Aussteller heute
als eine weitere Einnahmequelle: Die
London Stock Exchange und Standard
& Poor’s (S&P) erheben Gebühren für
SEDOL- und CUSIP-Codes. Ebenfalls
beginnt seit kurzem S&P, von den
Nutzern von ISIN-Nummern, die auch
CUSIP-Codes umfassen, Gebühren zu
erheben. Als nationale Vergabestelle
für die Schweiz und Liechtenstein
stellt Telekurs Financial die Valoren-
nummern ihren Kunden weiterhin
ohne zusätzliche Gebühren zur Ver-
fügung.
Durch die zunehmende Nutzung von
“alternativen” Anlageklassen (wie
z.B. hypothekarisch gesicherte Wert-
papiere sowie hybride Instrumente)
muss eine neue Stufe von Wertpa-
pierstammdaten oder zumindest
eine Verbindung zu den zugrunde
liegenden Basiswerten (Underlyings)
unterhalten werden. Es stellt sich
die Frage, wie gross die Verzögerung
zwischen dem Bedarf und der Erfül-
lung des Bedarfs ist. Die Revisoren
werden selbstverständlich die Frage
stellen, wie der Bedarf zwischen-
zeitlich behandelt wird. Durch die
Datenstrategie von Telekurs Finan-
cial sind hybride Instrumente sowie
andere alternative Anlagearten markt-
üblich verfügbar oder können sehr
schnell zum Valordata Feed (VDF)
hinzugefügt werden. Eine weitere
Herausforderung, der sich die Invest-
ment-Unternehmen zum Teil stellen
KÜNFTIGE HERAUSFORDERUNGEN AN WERTPAPIERSTAMMDATENDie Wertpapierstammdaten waren lange Zeit ein unsichtbares Element im Backoffice-Bereich des Bankensektors. Jetzt

Richard Newbury (Responsable Product Services, Telekurs UK)

46
qu’agence officielle (National Numbe-
jacents. Cela soulève néanmoins la
question suivante: “Quel décalage
y a-t-il entre la détermination des
besoins et le moment où ceux-ci sont
satisfaits?”. La question de l’auditeur
sera bien entendu: “Comment gérez-
vous ces besoins entre-temps?”.
Selon la stratégie positive de gestion
des données de Telekurs Financial,
les instruments hybrides et les autres
types de placements alternatifs sont
soit déjà disponibles soit peuvent
être ajoutés très rapidement à
Valordata Feed (VDF).
forum
Un autre défi que les entreprises
peuvent avoir à relever est de devoir
utiliser des copies multiples de
données qui ne conviennent pas. Un
grand nombre d’entreprises a tenté
d’implanter l’Enterprise Data Mana-
gement (EDM). Cela signifie que tous
les départements d’une entreprise
ont accès aux mêmes lots de don-
nées référentielles. Selon les entre-
prises elles-mêmes, l’intégration de
cette solution n’a pas toujours été
une grande réussite. La plupart des
entreprises semblent continuer à uti-
liser des solutions multiples en plus
d’EDM, avec des bases de données
qui sont dupliquées plusieurs fois
au sein de l’entreprise, les données
correspondantes étant fournies par
divers fournisseurs.
BMW. Interrogez trois fournisseur de
données et vous aurez trois répon-
ses différentes (voir encadré ci-
dessous). La société elle-même dit
s’appeler Bayerische Motoren Werke
Aktiengesellschaft. Autrement dit,
aucun des trois fournisseurs n’a
donné de réponse vraiment fausse,
mais pour une solution STP ou EDM,
presque juste est toujours synonyme
de faux.
Étant donné que plus de groupes
travaillent actuellement sur l’élabo-
ration de normes pour les données
référentielles et plus encore sur le
renforcement des exigences posées
aux émetteurs, il est certain que les
années à venir verront des change-
ments en ce qui concerne ce type
d’information financière. Cela nous
promet un avenir intéressant.

1 June 06
My team-mate Laurent Jaunin and I
and our trusty boat, the “Telekurs
Twing”, have arrived in Douarnenez,
near Brest. Our preparations for the
MINI Fastnet will be scrupulous, as
this race is crucial to our qualification
for the Transat 6.50 next year. The
meteorological conditions are good.
There will be at least 84 other boats
alongside us on the starting line.
4 June 2006
The big day has arrived! The 1250km
course goes past the Scilly Isles off
Cornwall, across the Celtic and the
Irish Sea to the legendary lighthouse
on the Fastnet Rock at the most
southerly tip of Ireland, and then back
to Douarnenez. We get off to a good
start. At the first course marker we
are with the main pack, and not far
from the leaders. We cross the Chenal
du Four and, with good visibility and
a force 3 wind, sail on to the Valbelle
lighthouse, where the crossing to
England begins.
7 June 2006
At two o’clock in the morning we are
still 21 nautical miles (38km) from
Ireland and in an area of high pressure
(1029 mbar). We are almost comple-
tely becalmed. Seven hours later, at
09.00 hours, the Fastnet lighthouse
finally comes into view. A great
moment! It’s the first time I have ever
made it to this legendary place - and
we’re in fifth position.
8 June 2006
I will remember this day for a long
time. Everything starts off well. The
wind picks up a bit. By eight o’clock
there is an easterly wind with a speed
of 14 knots and the sea is starting to
heave. Two hours later, and the wind
has freshened to 21 knots. During the
course of the day the wind becomes
so strong that we are forced to reef the
sails.
Then it happens! At 19.00 hours, after
more than 1000km at sea, there is a
loud crack as the mast breaks in two.
It snaps off about three metres above
the bridge and rips the sail down with
it into the water. As the mast crashes
into the boat and threatens to pierce
the hull, I decide to cut the rope to
the sail. At 20.00 hours, we send a
distress signal. We hold out for five
hours in heavy seas until the Royal
Navy ar-rives to tow us to the Isles of
Scilly.
Conclusion
I have to admit – I imagined all kinds
of things happening in the 2006
season. But I never thought we would
be de-masted. As a result, our quali-
fication programme for the Transat
2007 has really taken a knock. With
the help of my team and my friends, I
am trying to get the boat repaired as
quickly as possible. The pressure is
on, because the MINI MED, the last
sailing race of the season, takes place
in the Mediterranean at the end of
July 2006. But I am sure we will make
it, thanks to the generous amount of
support I am receiving from
everyone.
TELEKURS GROUP SETS SAIL: PART 4In autumn 2007, Jacques Valente - a sales executive with Telekurs Financial – and his purpose-built boat “Telekurs
Twing” will take part in the single-handed Transat 6.50 yacht race. In this issue of realtime, we publish excerpts from
Jacques Valente’s ship’s log to give readers a taste of the excitement of the preparatory race, the MINI Fastnet 2006.

Race update July 2006
“Telekurs Twing” was ready to compete
in good time in the 500 nautical mile MINI
MED. Out of 23 boats, the “Telekurs Twing”
was placed fifth – a mere two minutes be-
hind the runner-up. But more importantly:
after sailing a total of 1580 nautical miles
in races in 2006, Jacques Valente has qua-
lified for next year’s Transat 6.50.
Congratulations!

1. Juni 2006
Mit meinem Teamkollegen Laurent Jau-
nin und dem Segler “Telekurs Twing”
treffe ich in Douarnenez bei Brest ein.
Wir wollen uns gewissenhaft auf die
MINI Fastnet vorbereiten. Sie ist ent-
scheidend für meine Qualifikation zur
Transat 6.50 im kommenden Jahr. Die
meteorologischen Bedingungen sind
gut. Nicht weniger als 84 Boote wer-
den mit uns am Start sein.
4. Juni 2006
Der grosse Tag ist gekommen! Die
Route umfasst die 1250 km lange
Strecke Richtung Scilly-Inseln vor
Cornwall: durch das Keltische Meer
und die Irische See zum sagenumwo-
benen Leuchtturm auf dem Fastnet-
Felsen am südlichsten Punkt vor Irland
und zurück nach Douarnenez. Wir
erwischen einen guten Start. Wir wen-
den an der ersten Kursmarke mit dem
Hauptfeld, bleiben aber im Kontakt
mit der Spitze. Wir überqueren den
Um 20.00 Uhr senden wir das Not-
signal. Nach fünf Stunden Ausharren
bei hohem Wellengang trifft die
englische Marine ein und schleppt
uns auf die Scilly-Inseln ab.
Fazit
Ich muss zugeben, ich habe mir alle
möglichen Szenarien für diese Saison
2006 überlegt. Ich habe aber niemals
daran gedacht, dass wir “entmastet”
werden könnten. Das Qualifikations-
programm für die Transat 2007 wird
dadurch arg durchgeschüttelt. Mit
meinem Team und Freunden versuche
ich das Boot so schnell als möglich
zu reparieren. Denn bereits Ende Juli
2006 findet im Mittelmeer die MINI
MED statt, die letzte Regatte der
Saison. Der Wettkampf gegen die
Uhr beginnt. Ich bin aber sicher, dass
ich es dank der grossartigen Unter-
stützung, die ich von allen Seiten
erhalte, schaffen werde.
Regatta-Update Juli 2006
Rechtzeitig zum Start der MINI MED über
500 Seemeilen war “Telekurs Twing”
wieder voll wettbewerbsfähig. Von 23
Booten belegte “Telekurs Twing” den
fünften Platz – nur zwei Minuten hinter
dem Zweitplatzierten. Aber noch wich-
tiger: Mit insgesamt 1580 Regatta-See-
meilen 2006 hat Jacques Valente die
Bedingungen für die Qualifikation zur
Transat 6.50 im kommenden Jahr endgül-
tig erfüllt. Herzliche Gratulation!

fahrt Richtung England beginnt.
7. Juni 2006
Um zwei Uhr morgens sind wir immer
noch 21 Seemeilen (38 km) vor Irland
und befinden uns in einem Hoch-
druckgebiet von 1029 hPa (Hektopas-
cal). Es herrscht beinahe Windstille.
Sieben Stunden später, um 9.00 Uhr,
kommt endlich der Leuchtturm von
Fastnet in Sicht. Ein grosser Moment!
Zum ersten Mal erreiche ich diesen
legendären Ort! Und das erst noch als
Fünfter.
8. Juni 2006
innerung bleiben. Alles fängt gut an.
Der Wind wird etwas stärker. Um acht
Uhr morgens bläst er mit 14 Knoten
aus Ost und das Meer gerät langsam
in Bewegung. Zwei Stunden später
hat der Wind bereits auf 21 Knoten
aufgefrischt. Im Laufe des Tages wird
er so heftig, dass wir die Segelfläche
reduzieren müssen. Dann geschieht
es! Um 19.00 Uhr, nach mehr als
1000 km auf hoher See, knickt der
Mast mit einem lauten Krachen! Er
bricht rund drei Meter über der Brücke
und reisst die Segel mit ins Wasser.
Weil der Mast heftig gegen das Boot
schlägt und den Rumpf zu durchschla-
gen droht, entscheide ich mich, die
Seile zum Segel zu kappen.

1er juin 2006
J’arrive à Douarnenez près de Brest
avec Laurent Jaunin, membre de
l’équipe et mon fidèle voilier “Telekurs
Twing”. Nous voulons nous préparer
minutieusement à la MINI Fastnet.
Elle sera déterminante pour ma qua-
lification à la Transat 6.50 l’année
prochaine. Les conditions météoro-
logiques sont bonnes. Pas moins de
84 équipages seront sur la ligne de
départ.
4 juin 2006

Conclusion
son 2006. Mais je n’ai jamais envisagé
que nous puissions être victimes d’un
“dématage”. Le programme de quali-
fication pour la Transat 2007 est donc
fortement compromis. J’essaie de
réparer le bateau le plus rapidement
possible, avec l’aide de mon équipe
et de mes amis. Car dès fin juillet
2006 a lieu la dernière régate de la
saison, la MINI MED en Méditerran-
née. La course contre la montre com-
mence. Mais je suis convaincu d’y
arriver, surtout grâce au formidable
soutien dont je bénéficie de toutes
parts.
