no tech, low tech? teaching and technology in low resource elt contexts
DESCRIPTION
Nicky Hockly's presentation for Learning Technologies SIG Pre-conference Event at IATEFL Harrogate 2014. Abstract: Is it possible to teach English with technology in low-resource contexts? Do teachers need to have expensive up-to-date technology, and reliable IT infrastructure to even consider integrating the use of technology into their English language classes? I address these questions by looking at what EFL teachers can and can't do in contexts with few resources, and provide some suggestions for teachers who would like to start working with technology in their classrooms, but are concerned that they do not have the means.TRANSCRIPT

The ‘digital divide’
What is it and (how)
does it affect you?

Technology in low-resource contexts
The ‘digital divide’• developed vs developing countries• urban vs rural areas• in classrooms • at home• effective vs non-effective use (Yang & Egbert 2004)
• teacher skills (Warschauer 2011)
• digital natives/ residents (Prensky 2001 / White 2008)

Agree or disagree…?
1) You need the latest technologies to carry out
‘good’ ICT-based lessons or activities.
2) Technology is too expensive to use in EFL
classes in many contexts.
3) Using technologies effectively requires a non-
traditional approach to teaching.

It’s good to know about other countries. I hope we
can do it with other countries.
We learnt a lot of things about
Argentina & had a great deal of fun
It was very interesting but I blamed myself that I
haven’t shared in that interview
She had a different language

What can you do?
• start small (one class) & ask your students
• establish why (learning aims)
• use simple & appropriate technology
• relevant & appropriate content
• work within political realities
• get training & support
