Nomads News Official Newsletter of Nomads Golf Club - Perth - Western Australia
Here we are, at the start of yet another golfing year having already played the 1st of many
more great days out on the course. The year kicked off blowing most of us all over the
course but, that’s Mosman Park for you. We have had all sorts of weather conditions over
the years, from heavy downpours to lightning so the wind was something new to most of us.
A small, but nevertheless, committed group of 38 golfers tackled the conditions even having
to putt on unreadable greens due to coring having been done recently. Going by the scores
recorded (between 23 and 35 points), not too bad under the difficult circumstances.
The AGM went off without a hitch and we welcome Hector West into the Captaincy, David
Bartlett into the Vice-Captain’s seat and yours truly as the newly elected Junior Vice-
Captain.
It was agreed that electronic payments for individual games would be raised prior to the
game and you are asked to make payment at your earliest convenience after receiving
invoicing. Other fees, such as the Meat Raffle, Big 3, etc. are to be paid on matchday at the
registration point and raffle tickets may be purchased after the game but before the
commencement of prizegiving.
As this will be the last issue of Nomads News for 2017 I would like to take this opportunity to
thank each and everyone for your kind remarks and encouragement to bring you your
monthly issue of Nomads News.
In closing, I would also like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas
and may 2018 bring you happiness and everything else you may wish for. If you are
intending to be out and about this festive season, be cool, be prepared and drive safe.
Until Next Month..........

KEN’S LAST POST
Thanks to all concerned for a great Gold Cup Day, despite the blustery, humid conditions
and unreadable greens. The winning scores, in the mid thirties, were still impressive under
the less favourable conditions. My congratulations to all the winners!!.
The AGM is now a thing of the past and I would like to welcome the “Fr”-Editor onto the
committee in his new portfolio as Junior Vice-Captain.
It has indeed been an honour and a privilege to have served you as Captain for the past
year and I look forward to sitting back in the cheap seats and to enjoy the camaraderie I
have come to know amongst our avid group of dedicated golfers. I have handed over the
reins to Hector and I would like to take this opportunity to say, thank you for your support
and dedication over the past 12 months and I wish you and your committee nothing but the
best for the next 12 months ahead. Enjoy the experience!!
CAPTAIN’S CORNER
It is indeed an honour and a privilege to step up as your Captain for the next 12 months and
together with my committee, look forward to a great year ahead. We are already in the
planning stages for our 5th birthday celebrations, Charity Day, NvS Cup event, Peter
Thomson Knockout Cup and 10th Australian Nationals, to name but a few.
Your committee for the next 12 months remains, for all intents and purposes, unchanged but
for a few portfolio adjustments. Neville Walker has decided to take a break and I would like
to thank him for his efforts over the past years. You would be amazed as to what Neville
has done for us, from venue co-ordination to managing our Samson operating system,
working out handicaps, cross referencing to GolfLink, and much, much more. Enjoy your
break Neville but don’t wander too far away as we may want to call on your expertise in the
future. We will be recruiting a new committee member to assist us with the big hole left by
our beloved Uncle Nev.
As this will be the last issue of Nomads News for 2017, I would like to take this opportunity to
wish each and everyone a very Merry Christmas and may all your wishes and aspirations
come to fruition in 2018.
Here’s looking forward to seeing you all at Rockingham

Work is for people
who don’t know how
to play golf.
The final total of the fundraising at the 2017 Charity Day event will be announced at the January game at Rockingham. Unfortunately, due to problem in receiving the prize, I am taking steps to cancel the Raffle. As soon as we receive authorisation from the Department of Gaming, we will refund monies received. Vice-Captain, David Bartlett, whose responsibility it is to host the 2018 Charity Day event, is already hard at work researching a well-deserving charity, and is in the process of locking down a suitable date and, of course, a suitable golf course that can accommodate the huge numbers of players expected to participate. Watch this space for more info.

As I reach the end of my golfing life, I would like to share with you a creed
passed onto me by my Dad.
10 Commandments(of golf)
1. Never play a shot when angry
2. Play each shot as a single event
3. Pin-point a target to aim at
4. Visualise the shot exactly in your mind’s eye
5. Follow a precise pre-shot routine before each shot
6. Play the shot only when you are focused and ready
7. Commit to each shot fully without any self-doubt
8. Trust your swing
9. Stay upbeat and carry yourself with confidence
10. Accept the result, and then focus on the next shot
RELAX
SMILE TO YOURSELF
ENJOY THE UNIQUE CHALLENGE OF EACH SHOT
On behalf of all us, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Uncle Neville for his hard work and
dedication to, not only at Nomads Golf Club Perth but also to his unselfish efforts in offering his assistance
in caddying for blind golfers as well as his vast knowledge and expertise on the golfing front.
Uncle Neville, we are going to miss you but I’m sure we will see you out on the course in the not too
distant future. – Enjoy your break, and thank you once again. – “Fr”-Editor

Competition By Fred Meijer
Have you ever wondered where the Peter Thomson Knockout Cup originated, well wonder no more.....
Peter William Thomson AO CBE
The Nomads Golf Club of Australia is honoured to have as its patron one of the greatest golfers to
play the game with an enviable record particularly in the Open Championship.
Born on 23 August 1923 in Melbourne, he is considered the greatest Australian golfer of them all,
and must also be considered one of the best links golfers of all time.
While he played sparingly in the U.S., Peter Thomson won often in Australia, Europe and Asia
during his best years in the 1950s. During one stretch - 1952 to 1958 - he finished no worse than
second in the British Open, winning four times.
Peter Thomson took up golf at age 12, and by age 15 was club champion at his local golf club.
He became a professional golfer in 1948.
He finished second at the 1952 and '53 Open Championships, then won in 1954, '55, and '56 - the
only golfer in the 20th Century to win the British Open three straight years. He added another win
in 1958. His final British Open title came in 1965, and it is considered his most important.
In the '50s, only a handful of America's best players traveled to play the Open, and then only
occasionally. By 1965, all the world's best were there, and Thomson held off Palmer, Nicklaus,
Player and defending champ Tony Lema for the victory.
Thomson won once on the U.S. PGA Tour, but won the national championships of 10 countries,
including the New Zealand Open nine times. His winning finally ended in 1988 with the British PGA
Seniors title.
Before that, however, he did venture to America and played a full season on the Senior PGA Tour.
The results: Thomson dominated, winning 9 times in 1985.
He served as President of the Australian PGA from 1962 to 1994. In 1998, Thomson captained the
International team to victory in the Presidents Cup. He also built a thriving golf course design
business.
Peter Thomson was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988.
An Expression of Interest and full competition rules for the 2018 Peter Thomson Knockout Cup will be published in the January 2018 edition of Nomads News. In the meantime, start talking to a fellow Nomad to form a partnership and enter this, always, well supported event.

GOLF QUIPS
golf.ing, a duffer’s dictionary by Henry Beard & Roy
McKie, continued……..
raingear – lightweight, waterproof clothing that would have
provided a player excellent protection from a sudden downpour
out on the course if it weren’t in the trunk of his car.
rake – Implement used for smoothing sand in bunkers whose
handle deflected your ball into a set of deep footprints a few
inches from where its head is resting.
reading the green – Putting surfaces are seldom level, and
golfers must study them closely to learn which way the break.
Even the “friendliest”-looking green will have some tricks up its
sleeve and many are downright ornery. Thus, the message of
any given green can range from “aim three balls outside the left
edge” to “you’ll be lucky to get down in four, and those are the
ugliest pants I have ever seen”
recovery shot – A challenging shot successfully played from a
difficult lie or unfavorable position to a place from which it is
possible to three-putt.
regulation – Term used by a golfer to describe his pure-par play
during a round when he always reached the greens in one, two,
three, er, um, or ah strokes, and holed out with twoish putts.
relief – Unusual situation when, thanks to the rules of golf, a
player is actually able to improve his lie without counting a
penalty stroke while another golfer is watching.
rescue club – a specially designed utility club, often a lofted
fairway wood or hybrid iron-wood that allows players who would
normally have to chip out into the fairway from a terrible lie on
one side of the hole to hit the ball into another terrible lie 200
yards away.
re-tee – to make a second drive. Because the tee shot requires
intense concentration, a player is almost always permitted to hit
another ball, without penalty, providing the original mishit was
caused by the clicking of another golfer’s shoelaces together, or
the sudden wingflash of a passing butterfly, or the nearby impact
of a subatomic particle.

2018 LAUNCH
Fellow Nomads
The inaugural 2017 NvS Cup was an resounding success. However, although this was the first
time that such an event has taken place, a few issues and concerns were raised. The idea
was to have a fun tournament with no hard and fast rules so there were a few mistakes which
we have rectified. We are currently writing up a procedure for the 2018 event promises to be
bigger and better.
Some improvements for 2018 are; 1) Best of 3 Games, 2) Individual Match Play, 3) 2-Tee starts,
4) carts for all participants, 5) announcement of scores at the conclusion of each match.
There will be a winner!! Most important, let’s have fun out there!!!
Round 1 will be played at MANDURAH G.C on Sunday 18 March 2018
40 spots and 20 carts have been reserved for a 2-tee start at 10h15
Expressions of Interest will be called for at Rockingham but should you wish to reserve your spot,
send Fred Meijer (South) [email protected] , or Ken Lloyd (North) [email protected]
a short e-mail at your earliest convenience.
