Last week the Nats put in place a judge-led Public Inquiry regarding the establishment of trams in Edinburgh. The Nats claim that there has been a huge over run in costs of the Edinburgh Trams project, thus a Public Inquiry was required. Yet, in the case of Peterhead prison where there has also been a huge over run in costs, the Nats refuse to carry out a Public Inquiry. However, the issues at Peterhead not only cover a massive cost over run for the building of the prison from an initial £28 million to an estimated £150 million despite not having to purchase the ground on which it was built. If that wasn’t enough of a reason for a judge-led Public Inquiry there are multiple reason for having one for HMP Grampian. Within a few weeks of opening, three full scale riots took place causing considerable damage to the prison which endangered the lives of prisoners and warders. Were the riots caused by poor staffing levels which resulted from the Nats Government trying to claw back cost over runs at the prison and what consequences does this have for the security of the jail and the local community? As a huge number of emergency forces and warders from across Scotland had to be drafted in to deal with the riots, what was the cost to the public purse. Was there proper public consultation when both the Nats and the SNPS misinformed the public about the cost of the prison and from where prisoners would be drawn, claiming only local prisoners would be held at HMP Grampian. Since the riots half the 550 prisoners have been returned to the Central Belt, thus they were not local, so they should never have been sent to Peterhead and now this costly prison lies half empty. A huge campaign was run by the Nats and SPS to silence anyone asking questions about this grossly expensive prison ranging from the arrest of the owner of Buchan’s only local newspaper to the SPS attacking local politicians during the closed period before elections. These are a few of the many reasons for a Public Inquiry. There are far more reasons for Public Inquiry to be held into Peterhead Prison than there are for the Edinburgh Trams. However, there won’t be one held into HMP Grampian, all we will get is a Nats cover up as prison continues out of control with yet more fires and disturbances.

Fears farmers are not taking action over disease threat. Vets from Scotland’s Rural College are appealing to sheep farmers to be alert to an increasing threat from Maedi Visna (MV) an incurable viral disease of sheep. They fear many in the industry have an out of sight out of mind attitude to the threat which can affect all sheep breeds. Specialists working within Veterinary Services, part of the College’s SAC Consulting Division, say a high level of infection has been found in some flocks and there is evidence of infection increasing throughout the sheep population. Amongst samples recently submitted for analysis, in one flock 11 out of 12 ewes tested positive and in another 41 out of 48 were positive. “It is true to say that these flocks suspected an issue and were prepared to deal with it,” says Ian Pritchard, Health Schemes Manager. “But how many flocks out there could have an issue but have not, or are afraid to look for MV? Producers cannot afford to be complacent and underesti-mate the risks of the disease. It could have a severe effect on the productivity and economics of their sheep system.” The name Maedi Visna derives from two Icelandic words which describe the main clinical signs of pneumonia and wasting. It is a chronic disease of sheep caused by a retro-virus and was introduced into the UK through imported animals. Difficult to diagnose and contagious it has since spread, especially in commercial flocks. It can lead to poor body condition, poorer fertility, increased mastitis, smaller and weaker lambs and increased mortality. There is no cure for MV and no vaccine. According to Ian Pritchard the warning signs are out there. “Statistics from veterinary laboratories in England, Wales

and Scotland show an increase in outbreaks. Several larger flocks have encountered MV to their cost. One example is a flock with 8% ewe mortality, a high cull rate due to mastitis and poor condition resulting in a high net replacement cost, and lambs often with poorer growth rates. Another large flock has estimated the cost, of a 20-40% reduction in flock productivity predominantly due to MV, at between £30,000 and £50,000. Sheep farmers are advised to take precautions seriously. At a basic level they should ensure boundary fences are secure to avoid contact with other flocks. Any new sheep brought on the farm should be quarantined and tested before they join the main flock. It is also important to investigate any cases of ill thrift in ewes. “A group of 12 poorer, thin ewes can be blood tested for evidence of the disease”, says Mr Pritchard. “But, where possible, it is far better if flockmasters ensure they buy in any breeding replacements from MV accredited flocks.” The MV accreditation scheme, run by Premium Sheep and Goat Health Scheme, has over 2600 members who test their sheep on a regular basis following the rules and conditions of the scheme. Ian Pritchard recommends that anyone selling breeding sheep should consider joining the accreditation scheme as customers may wish reassurance that they are not buying-in MV. “If you are already a member of MV accreditation scheme then you are at a very low risk providing you follow the scheme’s stringent biosecurity regulations that are designed to protect your flock and the flocks of your customers,” says Mr Pritchard. The British sheep flock is renowned for the high quality of its product – let it be renowned for high standards of animal health. DO NOT LET MV GET A FOOTHOLD.

NFU Scotland has used an evidence session in the Scottish Parliament to call for a step change in pace and emphasis in efforts to

address the problems being created by wild geese across Scotland.

Speaking to the Rural Affairs, Climate Change and Environment Committee, NFU Scotland’s Deputy Director of Policy, Andrew

Bauer said: “For years, payments to farmers and crofters affected by geese were seen as the best way to mitigate the impacts. Over

time, geese numbers and the damage they cause have grown significantly. Due to the recession, the Scottish Government has re-

duced geese damage payments to farmers and crofters. These twin pressures have brought the situation to a head, and made most

parties understand that we cannot continue on the current track. Money alone will not solve this problem. On Islay the situat ion has

deteriorated to the point that farming practices and business viability are at risk. Scottish Government and Scottish Natural Heritage

have been working with local farmers to develop a long term management plan to get things onto a better footing.

NEW BOARDS FOR ALDI SITE A derelict site in Peterhead will receive an artistic yet sporting

touch from local school pupils ahead of the Queen’s Baton

Relay passing through the town.

The site of the former Kirkburn Mill, owned by supermarket

chain Aldi, is awaiting redevelopment and is in a prominent

position on a key route into the town centre.

For safety reasons the West Road site has been surrounded by

a wooden fence.

To help improve its appearance, 12 panels

will be erected at regular intervals along the

fence to provide a focal point of interest

and some colour to enhance the site.

Each panel is two metres long and one me-

tre high, and all the designs have a sporting

theme. They will be installed in the week

before the baton arrives. (w/b June 23)

Ten of the designs have been provided by a

group of third year pupils studying art at

Peterhead Academy. The first panel is a

“Welcome to Peterhead” board.

To mark the contribution of JogScotland to

the sporting life of the town and to the

Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton

Relay, the final picture comes from 9-year-

old Shonie Strachan of JogScotland.

The designs were prepared for printing by

Aberdeenshire Council’s graphic designers

and local firm Ashgrove Trading will print

and erect the panels.

They are designed to be durable and will

remain at the site as long as there is safety

fencing up around the former mill.

Aberdeenshire Council project officer for

Peterhead Town Centre, Heather Barclay,

said: “This has been a great opportunity to

showcase some of the work of pupils study-

ing art at Peterhead Academy, and for local

young people to do something positive to

contribute to the regeneration of their town.

“The panels will really brighten up the area

and I hope that everyone passing on their

way into the town centre will enjoy the

designs.”

The project is supported by Aberdeenshire

Council’s Peterhead Futures Group, which

has provided funding through the council’s

town centre regeneration scheme.

Bolt finds home after 556 days in kennels

A lonely dog who had spent over 550 days in kennels has finally

found a loving home thanks to the Scottish SPCA.

Scotland's animal welfare charity recently made a special plea to

animal lovers to give the friendly staffie, named Bolt, a fresh start

after he was moved from their animal rescue and rehoming centre

in Glasgow to their Drumoak-based centre.

Nikki and Martin Shaw from Aberdeenshire were so moved by

Bolt's appeal they decided to offer him a second chance. Bolt left

the Scottish SPCA's care on 11 June and is now named Chester.

Centre assistant manager Debbie Innes said, "It was love at first

sight when Nikki and Martin met Bolt.

"Everyone here is over the moon that he has finally found his

forever home and we just know he is

going to be spoiled rotten.

"Seeing a dog like Bolt leave to start

a happy new life is the kind of

moment that makes this job worth-

while."

Nikki said, "I'd been looking at the

Scottish SPCA's website for months

and kept going back to Bolt.

"Martin and I eventually decided that

the time was right for us to

rehome a dog and when we went

along to meet him we both knew he

was the one for us.

"He slept for almost two days straight

when we first got him home and it

was lovely to see him so relaxed. It

was as if all the stress of being

homeless had finally been lifted from

him.
