What is Palliative Care

Mr . Bill Smith had just turned 65 . He was looking forward to the golden retirement years he had always dreamed about . His wife would be retiring soon; they would have time to spend together . But things weren’t really going all that well…

You see, Mr . Smith had prostate cancer . He had had it a few years . In fact, he had taken quite a few treatments for the disease . He had been through radiation treatments, hormone treatments and several different types of chemotherapy .

Bill felt tired all the time . His muscles felt sore all over, especially in the mornings . The soreness in his muscles was so intense, some mornings he felt he just about couldn’t get out of bed . He also had a different kind of pain in his hands, feet and legs . It was like they were numb but they hurt all the time . Bill wasn’t sleeping well . He had planted a garden in the spring . Now, he didn’t even feel up to harvesting its bounty . His wife was still working, and after a long day’s work, she had to come and pick the vegetables and tool the garden . She had let Bill know just how much she resented that .

Bill was seeing his cancer specialist and had seen his family doctor . They had prescribed pain medicine and an anti-depressant, but he still had the muscle soreness, the intense fatigue, and the arm and leg pain . A nurse suggested palliative care . Bill wasn’t sure about it, but he called for an appointment with the palliative care doctor . The doctor came to his home. He sat down and listened to Bill . He had lots of questions about the types of pain Bill was having . During the examination, he asked Bill about constipation; something Bill hadn’t thought to tell his other doctors .

The doctor made several changes to Bill’s medicines . He talked about avoiding medicines that would make Bill feel more fatigued . He strongly recommended marital counseling . The doctor actually talked to Bill about renewing his spiritual side of his life .

Gradually, Bill started to feel better and his energy level improved . He knows he still had cancer, but he felt he could deal with it . Palliative care is for people who have serious life threatening illness and need help with management of the symptoms of the disease .

Q: If you or a senior loved one has suffered a myocardial in-farction or heart attack, what step can you take to decrease the risk of another heart attack?

It is very important to make and keep follow-up doctors’ appointments and test; take medications as directed and eat a healthy diet. In addition to these and other things, The US National Library of Medicine suggests to prevent another heart attack, a senior needs to do the following:

• Keep blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol under control• Don’t smoke• Eat a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low in animal fat• Regular, moderate exercise, at least 30 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week, consult with your doctor regarding the right exercise plan for you. • Get checked and treated for depression• Limit alcohol intake to no more than one drink a day for women, and no more than two drinks a day for men• Stay at a healthy weight

Following these recommendations are vital to maintaining a senior’s good health. As a caregiver you can help, but there are also many organizations that provide outside assistance. Be sure to discuss all of your options for care and support with the senior’s physicians.

Q: My father has Alzheimer’s Disease and now spends most of the day in bed or in his recliner. Should I be concerned about bed-sores?

A: Once a person stops walking or stays in one position too long, he or she may get skin or pressure sores. To prevent skin sores, you can:

· Move the person at least every two hours if he/she is sitting up

· Move the person every hour if he/she is lying down.

· Put a 4-inch form pad on top of the mattress

· If the foam pad is hot or uncomfortable, check with medical supply center to order pads filled with gel, air or water. With a physician’s prescription, insurance or Medicare may cover the cost.

· Each day look at the person’s heels, hips, buttocks, shoulders, back and elbows for redness or sores.

· Ask the doctor what to do if you find pressure sores. Pressure wounds are a serious matter and require prompt attention.

Southwest Pork Tacos Perfected (Family Features) This fuss-free recipe can be prepared in a variety of ways; create sizzling pork chops in a skillet or hot off the grill — the perfect excuse to get a head start on grilling season . To kick things up even more, try a rice pilaf dish on the side . Chop up some cilantro to stir into the rice for an added layer of flavor .

To ensure your pork tacos are juicy and tender, cook your chops to an internal temperature of 145°F with a 3-minute rest . Be sure to use a digital cooking thermometer to get the most delicious results .

Creative Mother’s Day Crafts

(Family Features) For Mother’s Day, celebrate the nurturing nature of mom with a specially painted flower pot that holds her favorite herbs or flowers .

The Chalkboard Herb Pot and Mommy’s Favorite Flower Pot projects from Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores don’t require any special skills, so anyone can make a customized gift for mom, grandma, or any other special mom in their life .

Tips for Using Chalkboard Paint· Chalkboard paint comes in classic black, but also comes in other colors as well .· Make sure it’s completely dry before trying to write on it .· Some chalkboard paints require you to condition the paint with chalk before using

it . Read label instructions carefully .

Tips for Decorating · Using spray paint and hot glue guns may require adult supervision .· Give the kids creative control – it may not turn out perfectly neat, but it will be

perfect for mom .· Not sure what to paint on the flower pot? Let the kids dip a hand or foot into the

paint and put prints onto the pot . Or, cut fun shapes out of sponges or potatoes and let them stamp around the pot .

You can find more ideas, project guides and supplies at www .joann .com .
