IN SHAPE FOR 2016?

8

We are sure that many of your New Year’s resolutions are now a distant memory, but Nissan is sticking to its commitment of shedding the pounds of its

passenger car range for the whole of 2016 and beyond.

The company has launched a Light-weighting Programme, and will produce a pioneering prototype material structure designed to be used in the floor of future vehicles. To do this Nissan will work closely with the UK supply chain, and draw on the materials and techniques used in motorsport and space travel.

David Moss, Vice President, Vehicle Design & Development, NTCE said: “The next 12 months promise to bring not resolutions, but revolutions, as the brand marches forward with yet more ‘Innovation That Excites’. This programme is another demonstration of our commitment to

developing the cars of tomorrow, today. He added: “We know the cars of the

future will need to be lighter, stronger and more efficient, that is why we are launching our prototype programme in collaboration with research and industry bodies across the UK. This programme intends to produce a new manufacturing process that will revolutionise the industry.”

In addition to the Light-weighting Programme, Nissan is involved in an extensive mass reduction programme, which has resulted in a 90kg weight loss for the X-Trail and 40kg for the new Qashqai. This is remarkable considering both cars have had an extensive addition of extra equipment, but all is made possible from lighter stronger materials.

DID YOU KNOW?Nissan designed and built engines for the The Lambda 4S-5 spacecraft, which in 1970 launched OHSUMI into orbit, Japan’s first satellite. Nissan had a thriving aerospace division and worked consistently with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency for years, but the division was sold off in 2000. Funnily enough, OHSUMI outlasted Nissan Aerospace by three years. It finally burned up in the atmosphere in 2003.

Nissan has announced its commitment to produce a future generation of electric vehicles (EV) batteries at its flagship manufacturing base in Sunderland, UK. It will be a £26.5m

investment and will safeguard 300 highly-skilled jobs in manufacturing, maintenance and engineering at Nissan’s advanced lithium-ion battery pant in Sunderland, the largest of its type in Europe.

The announcement comes at the beginning of a landmark year in which Nissan will celebrate it’s 30th anniversary year of the Sunderland factory. This investment shows a bold vision for Nissan’s future of zero-emission motoring.

Paul Willcox, Chairman, Nissan Europe, said: “With 200,000 customers around the world already, the Nissan LEAF has transformed the performance and perception of EVs and made Nissan the undisputed leader in EV technology.

“Today’s announcement reflects Nissan’s intention to remain EV leaders for many years to come, with our UK operations at the heart of our future innovations.”

Since EV production began in Sunderland in 2013, over 2,000 jobs have been created

from a £420m investment. With the investment continuing the manufacture will be looking at a ground-breaking project that will team Nissan with new academic and technology partners in the UK.

UK Business Secretary Sajid Javid said: “This investment from Nissan is a further vote of confidence in our thriving automotive sector.

“The UK is fast becoming a world leader in low carbon automotive technology and the government is backing the industry. We committed an extra £225million funding to the Advanced Propulsion Centre in the Autumn Statement.

“This Nissan project, which is benefiting from that funding, shows what can be achieved.”

Nissan’s UK battery plant is one of three Nissan battery production sites globally, also providing battery modules for Nissan’s all-electric van, the e-NV200, which is manufactured in the Barcelona Plant.

#NISSANWINTERWARRIORS

The famous Game of Thrones saying of Winter Is Coming, applies well to this story. With the world’s

climate slowly changing, there may come a time when the UK sees some extreme winters. If it does ever happen it won’t be an issue with these Nissan Design America (NDA) ‘Winter Warrior’ concepts.

The vehicles are designed to deal with snowfall, ice and drifts and to not fail when the most capable of all-wheel drive vehicles do.

The 3 aggressive models were custom-built Pathfinder, Murano and Rogue, all featuring full snow track systems. The vehicles will be displayed at the Chicago Auto Show and are able to tackle the record-breaking snowfalls that the USA has experienced this year.

“Rogue, Murano and Pathfinder are proven all-wheel-drive crossovers that are very

popular with customers, judging from exceptional sales results in 2015 and now in January 2016,” said Christian Meunier, senior vice president, Nissan Sales & Marketing and Operations, Nissan North America, Inc. “With the Winter Warriors, we wanted to take that idea to the extreme, enhancing the vehicles’ advanced systems with special snow tracks, Genuine Nissan Accessories, and a custom exterior appearance.”

Drivetrain components, engine, xtronic transmissions are all factory standards

Although the Murano, Rogue and Pathfinder aren’t available in the UK, these 3 are an excellent example of how Nissan can adapt their already fantastic range of vehicles to tackle the harshest climates in the world.

The purpose of the conference was to discuss the company’s performance in 2015 with its staff and then to highlight some of the key achievers. Some of the notable winners included Russell Bull- Sales Executive of the Year, Michael Pluckwell- Walcott- Technician of the Year, Andrew Singh- Service Advisor of the Year, Andrew England- Parts Advisor of the Year and Clare Carverhill- Rourke- Telesales Advisor of the Year. Chiswick Honda also took the honour of winning both Sales Team and After Sales Team of the year.
