RememberingDear Friends,
There’s a story about a traveling man who sat on the side of the road to rest from his journey. As he rested, another manpassed by. He walked slow and was bent forward. His expression was troubled and pain reflected in his eyes.
“What ails you fellow?” called up the wise, but simple man. “Come and join me and take a rest, for your form is suchthat I see a need in you to share the burden that you carry.” The other man sat down, stared far into the distance for awhile and then began.
“I have lost the very dearest person known to me.” Tears welled up in his eyes as he spoke and he fell silent for a whilebefore continuing. “I feel that I am constantly walking up a hill and that the wind is always against me, my feet are asheavy as clay and in my stomach I carry hot coals. I say to myself now that I must turn back to ease this pain. If I walkback down the hill then maybe I will find that all of this is not true and that my loved one will be waiting to greet me.”
The traveler sat listening to the man’s story and replied, “You must not go back down the hill. You need to reach the top,for thereafter you will find the path will level, the wind will soften, your will feet grow lighter and the hot coals willcool. To go back down the hill will prolong your pain, for the path to your healing is forward and up the hill.”
As the traveler got up to continue his journey, he said to the other man, “The one you have lost is not at the bottom of thehill but with you all the time, for you carry their spirit in your heart.”
We’ve all lost someone special and surely felt like this man in our grieving process. If we could only go back in time, ourloved one would be still be here and we won’t feel this pain. The suffering we will inevitably experience upon the deathof a loved one is the price we pay for love. Jesus knew this better than anyone, but he also promised that death is not theend, rather it’s the beginning. The beginning of a wondrous, glorious and eternal life with our Father.
Until our heavenly reunion, we can take consolation in our beautiful Catholic traditions that provide comfort in our timesof loss and ways to carry their spirit in our hearts. It’s important enough that our Church dedicates this entire month ofNovember to remembering and honoring our deceased loves.
During this month, we cover three chairs and beautify the surrounding space to represent those who have gone before us.Our Mass of Remembrance this Wednesday evening is for our dead and for us. As a community we give witness to ashared pain, consolation and hope. We are not alone on this journey.
I invite you to use the form on page two to submit the names of people you’d like to remember. There is something aboutwriting their name. I find it to be a prayerful moment, recalling how each one touched my life. It keeps their spirit alivein my heart and comforts me to know that while I miss them now, wewill one day be together, at the top of that hill, in that glorious lifewith God.
