Principals Perspective By Mr. Lee Evans

PTSA NEWS By Ms. Linda KuserkWe are two months into the school year, and I am happy to say that ourPTSA has had a very strong start. We have record PTSA memberships, partly due to the overwhelming response from the Magruder staff. Ithank all those who have supported the PTSA through membership.Every membership makes a difference. In September we held our 1st An-nual Colonel Classic Golf Tournament which raised nearly $2000 for ourPTSA. Many thanks to Martha Schaerr, our chairperson, and the mem-bers of her committee for all their hard work. I would also like to thankthe businesses and families who sponsored our tournament. Parents areable to view our sponsors and link to their businesses through the PTSAwebsite.

In October, Patty Winters organized a program titled A Straight Talkwith Teens on Taking Risks with Alcohol which was well attended bythe greater Magruder community. This program was the kick off for theEvery Fifteen Minutes Program which be held in April. (Continued on Page 2)

As we bring the first nine weeks to an end, we celebrate an excellent startto the 2010-2011 school year. We are pleased with the response of studentsto our emphasis on academic rigor and respecting the rights of everyone.

Seniors are working hard to fulfill their graduation requirements, and themonth of October was a period of assessment and evaluation for all stu-dents. The High School Assessments (HSAs) were administered during the

week of October 4. Other students were busy preparing for the October ad-ministration of the SAT and ACT. A large number of seniors have turnedtheir attention to meeting the earlier application deadlines established bymany colleges and universities. Senior Information Nightconducted bycounselors Ann Goode and Michael Stallingsprovided seniors and theirparents with strategies of how to navigate this process. Students in grades 9-11 were involved in the administration of the Preliminary SAT / NationalMerit Scholarship Qualifying Test ( PSAT / NMSQT ) on Wednesday,October 13 during the school day. These assessment measures continue torepresent a significant emphasis on high expectations in a competitiveacademic atmosphere. (Continued on Page 2)

Principals Perspective (continued from page 1 )

The April program is a huge undertaking, and many volunteers will be needed. More informationabout the Every Fifteen Minutes Program and volunteer opportunities are available within this issue ofthe Courier. October ended with the exciting events of Homecoming week, which would not occurwithout the support of numerous parents and staff members. Thank you to all those involved with theHomecoming activities. Opportunities to support our students continue throughout the year, and arepublicized on the PTSA listserv. Parents may sign up for the listserv at www.mhs-ptsa.org. Parentsmay choose the digest form when signing up if they wish to limit the number of e-mails. The digestform sends one e-mail summary per day.

The PTSA began November by participating in the national screening of the movie Race to No-where. This documentary looks at stress in students of all ages and the educational climate in Amer-ica. This movie will hopefully be a starting point for conversation regarding this topic. On November20th, we will be holding our Barnes and Noble Book Fair at the Barnes and Noble in WashingtonianShopping center in Gaithersburg. Parents will also be able to participate on-line at the Barnes and No-ble web site. Look for more details inside this issue of the Courier.

I look forward to seeing parents at the November PTSA meeting. This is our last meeting inthe 2010 calendar year. There will not be a meeting in December. If you are not yet a member of thePTSA, dont worry, there is still time to join.

We are very proud of the academic achievements of several students who have embraced the demands of aca-demic rigor and have received national recognition for their efforts. The Commended Students in the 2011

National Merit Program are Michael Beidleman, Mary Jo Boyce, Jennifer Lu, Erin Martin, Michael McGuire,Chelsea Ortiz, Hannah Schott, and Allison Smith. We also recognize and salute Michael Beidleman for beingnamed a National Achievement Scholarship semi-finalist. These students inspire their classmates and our staffby being examples of how personal sacrifice and investment in education can pay dividends.

The staff is also very excited about our Ninth Grade Initiative that is being implemented this fall. The newprogram is geared to focus on study, writing, and note-taking skillswith an emphasis on organizationandwas developed in an effort to improve the performance and efficiency of our ninth graders. All teachers ofninth grade students are participating in this initiative. Many programs of this nature have been very effectivein schools across the country.

As we focus on academic excellence, we continue to place significant emphasis on respect and character edu-

cation as we establish a climate that is conducive to teaching and learning. We have received a very positiveresponse from our students as evidenced by an increased focus on learning. Many students have responded ina very meaningful way to our efforts to promote respect, caring, service, and responsibility. The CARE(Colonels Actively Respecting Everyone) Program will highlight selected students monthly, as well as stu-dents identified by departments for their outstanding performance. The many acts of kindness, caring, and re-spect displayed by students will be honored. The greatest contribution to a positive school climate frequentlycomes from our students. Every effort will be made to applaud what they do, as well as the contributions ofdedicated staff members. We appreciate all their support of excellence in education at Magruder High School.

To close, I offer the words of Henry Ford as motivation, Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together isa process. Working together is success. I look forward to our work together during the 2010-11 school year.

    Dear Parents:

It has come to our attention that buses are having problems droppingoff students in the morning and picking them up in the afternoon,

because vehicles are blocking the path of the bus. Many parents arepassing buses that have their flashing lights on and stop signs out. This is a violation of county and state laws. As a result, bus drivers can not safely and appropriatelyperform their intended duties. Therefore, we are asking for your cooperation. Please do not drop offand pick up students between the hours of 6:40 am to 7:15 am, and 1:45 pm to 2:30pm in the front en-trance of the school. These hours are in effect Monday through Friday. We ask that during these re-stricted hours, students be dropped off and picked up from the stadium side entrance. Having the sup-port of the entire Magruder community, we will greatly increase the safety of our students and the effi-ciency of our busing system. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

Lunch seminars and full day open houses are being offered throughout theschool year in Magruder's College and Career Center to assist students andtheir parents with the college application and scholarship/financial aid proc-ess. Topics to be addressed are: "Nuts and Bolts of the Financial Aid Proc-ess, including programs available through the Ivy League" (November 10,2010 and January 5, 2011; 7:00am-3:30pm); "ACT vs. SAT, Which Test isBest for You?" (January 12, 2011; 7:00am-3:30pm); " Understanding the Accuplacer for Students considering Montgomery College" (February 2 and Febru-ary 10, 2011; 10:00-12:30); "Creating a Dynamite College Application" (March 30, 2011; 7:00am-3:3pm); and "Summer Enrichment Opportunities" (February 24 and March 9, 2011; 10:00-12:30). These programs will be presented by Heidi Garland, Magruder's College and Career Infor-mation Coordinator. Students, parents and guardians are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Every 15 Minutes By: PATTY WINTERSIf you made it through Float, Homecoming Week and the Fall Athletics, Drama and Music seasons, choosing a volunteer opportunity with Every 15 Minutes will be a piece of cake!!

Fall is dedicated to fund-raising and planning. Thanks to Ronda Laughlin, we have raised $1,500 fromjust two sources, and it was as simple as asking. If you can take some time to contact a business andask if they would consider being a sponsor for a program that saves lives and affects our entire commu-nity, this would be a huge help. I can give you the solicitation documents and suggest some contacts,or maybe you have a personal relationship with a business you think might be interested. I would alsobe happy to accompany you, if you like.

I am also seeking a Freshman or Sophomore parent who would consider being the Program Coordina-tor for the 2013 Every 15 Minutes. This is not the daunting task it might sound like, because I have ahow-to document and all the community contacts are in place. Few volunteer opportunities come closeto the gratification this position holds, or the opportunity to meet and work with so many dedicated

parents and community members who go the extra light-year for the sake of our kids.

For more information, please click on the Grim Reaper on the PTSA website at www.mhs-ptsa.org.Please also click on the Safe Homes Pledge tab and consider signing up, if you havent already.

If you want to be part of this team that reaches teenagers and saves lives, but cant make the planningmeetings, or have any questions, please email [email protected].
